                • Preview: Orioles (48-40) at Yankees (48-39)
                  Game: 3
                  Venue: Yankee Stadium
                  Date: July 07, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

What a difference a week makes.

The New York Yankees, winners of six straight, look to avenge last weekend's three-game sweep at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles with one of their own Sunday afternoon in the Bronx.

Since last Sunday's 4-2 loss in Baltimore, the Yankees (48-39) have swept Minnesota in a four-game set before taking the first two of this series, including a 5-4 come-from-behind victory Saturday.

Lyle Overbay had three hits and Eduardo Nunez, playing his first game in two months, came off the disabled list to drive in two runs for New York, which has won four of the five meetings with the Orioles at Yankee Stadium this season.

``Nuney is kind of a free spirit," manager Joe Girardi said. "I don't think he thought a lot about not having a lot of at_bats (while rehabbing a left side strain)."

Baltimore (48-40), which jumped out to a 3-0 lead Sunday, has dropped four of five since sweeping the Yankees despite Chris Davis staying hot against the AL East rivals. He hit a two-run homer in the first and now has six while batting .342 in 11 meetings with New York in 2013.

Davis' 33rd homer and 85th RBI equaled both of his totals from all of last season, matching the numbers in exactly 200 fewer at_bats. Six of his last nine hits have left the ballpark, though he's batting only .220 over his last 12.

``Anytime you're leading early in the game, you expect to continue to lead, or at least put up some more runs,' said Davis, whose 33 homers before the All-Star break are tied for fourth all-time among AL players. "Leads in this game don't last very long, especially in this ballpark and with their offense."

Davis has homered twice off Hiroki Kuroda this season, including last Sunday when Kuroda (7-6, 2.95 ERA) allowed all four runs over six innings.

The right-hander had given up two earned runs in each of his previous three starts prior to that defeat. He has a 4.13 ERA in eight outings, though, since giving up five runs in two innings of a 6-3 loss to the Orioles on May 22.

Kuroda originally was scheduled to start Friday's series opener, but a sore left hip flexor delayed his outing. An MRI didn't show any tears.

"That's the best news that we could have gotten," Girardi said. "He's felt better."

Kuroda is 1-2 with a 4.76 ERA in three starts versus Baltimore this season and will try to avoid a second loss to Jason Hammel.

Hammel (7-5, 5.19) allowed two runs and struck out six in 6 2-3 innings to earn the victory May 22. He also beat the Yankees 5-3 on April 13 after giving up two runs in six innings.

The right-hander, though, is 0-3 with a 5.55 ERA over his last six starts - all Baltimore defeats - and ranks among the worst in the majors having given up 18 home runs. He allowed five runs and nine hits in seven innings of Tuesday's 5-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox, including a pair of homers.

``It's just balls that are up in the zone that get hit out this year weren't last year,' Hammel said. ``It's kind of just the way I'm going right now. The mistakes are being amplified.'

Baltimore leads the majors with 119 homers, but its pitching has allowed an MLB-worst 117.

                  • Preview: Twins (37-47) at Blue Jays (42-45)
                    Game: 3
                    Venue: Rogers Centre
                    Date: July 07, 2013 1:07 PM EDT

The Minnesota Twins haven't won a series north of the border in eight seasons.

That can change Sunday when Ontario native Scott Diamond gets the ball for the Twins in the finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Losers of 16 of 20 to the Blue Jays and eight of nine at Toronto following Friday's 4-0 defeat, the Twins won 6-0 on Saturday. Leadoff man Brian Dozier hit a three-run homer and had a career-best four RBIs for Minnesota (37-47), which had dropped six straight and 11 of 14.

"We've been pressing lately and that's no way to play," right fielder Chris Parmelee said after finishing with two doubles and a walk.

The Twins, 1-1 on a 10-game trip that leads into the All-Star break, give the ball to Diamond (5-7, 5.18 ERA) as they go for their first series win in Toronto since taking two of three from May 27-29, 2005.

Diamond is 0-2 with a 7.65 ERA in his last four road starts since posting a 1.42 ERA while winning his first three, yet he's coming off an encouraging outing at home. The left-hander did not get a decision in his longest outing since May 7, throwing 6 2-3 innings and allowing three runs - two earned - in Monday's 10-4 loss to New York Yankees.

"I'm happy with the improvement personally, but we lost," said Diamond, 1-3 with a 7.40 ERA in his previous four appearances.

Diamond, born about 50 miles west of Toronto in Guelph, Ontario, will face the Blue Jays (42-45) for the third time and second at Rogers Centre. He's allowed two runs in 12 innings against them but lost at Toronto on Oct. 3 in a 2-1, season-ending defeat.

The Blue Jays are expected to counter with Todd Redmond (0-1, 3.52), though there's been talk that the club would call up Marcus Stroman from Double-A New Hampshire. Toronto has a spot open in the rotation after Chien-Ming Wang cleared waivers Friday and was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Redmond was called up from Buffalo on Wednesday and threw three scoreless innings that night in a 6-2 loss to Detroit. Sunday will mark his fifth big league appearance and first start for Toronto.

The right-hander's only other start was a loss while with Cincinnati on Aug. 18, giving up four runs in 3 1-3 innings of a 9-7 defeat to the Chicago Cubs.

A better offensive performance by the Blue Jays could help Redmond in his first appearance against Minnesota. Toronto, loser of nine of 13 since a franchise record-tying 11-game win streak, was held to four singles Saturday - three by Maicer Izturis - while getting shut out at home for the first time since May 3.

Jose Reyes had his team-best eight-game winning streak snapped, but he's batting .346 in six games at Rogers Centre since missing more than two months with a severely sprained left ankle.

Minnesota's Justin Morneau, a Canada native, is 0 for 8 in this series and batting .189 in 25 visits to Toronto.

Dozier went 2 for 4 in each of the last two games and has a team-best nine hits and seven RBIs this month.

He could be joined in the lineup by Clete Thomas, who may start if rookie outfielder Oswaldo Arcia can't play after getting hit by a pitch Saturday and leaving with a bruised right hand.

Torii Hunter and Miguel Cabrera are two big reasons the Detroit Tigers have dominated the Cleveland Indians this season.

The veteran pair again looks to lead the visiting Tigers as they try for an eighth consecutive victory over the struggling Indians on Sunday.

Hunter came within a single of the cycle and had three RBIs while Cabrera hit a two-run homer to help Detroit (48-38) to a 9-4 win Saturday.

The Indians (45-42) held a one-half game AL Central lead over Detroit on Tuesday, but since have dropped four in a row to fall 3 1/2 games back of the Tigers, who have outscored them 16-4 in the first two of this four-game set.

A winner in eight of 10 against the Indians this season, Detroit has outscored Cleveland 49-22 during its seven-game winning streak in the series. The Tigers also have won seven of nine at Progressive Field.

"We'll show up (Sunday),' Indians manager Terry Francona said. 'We certainly need to do better against them. They're the team that is directly ahead of us and they've kind of had their way with us, but I don't think we'll show up (Sunday) and not feel we're going to win. But we need to play better.'

Detroit has won five straight since losing six of seven.

Hunter, who hit a two-run homer Saturday, is batting .366 with six RBIs against the Indians this year.

Cabrera has homered four times with 12 RBIs in 10 games versus Cleveland in 2013. He's hit .355 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in his last seven at Progressive Field.

"He's been the best hitter on the planet for a long time," Hunter said.

Both named All-Stars on Saturday, Hunter and Cabrera are batting a combined .444 (8 for 18) against Cleveland's Corey Kluber (6-5, 4.33 ERA).

The right-hander has posted an 8.44 ERA while losing three straight starts to the Tigers, including two this season in which he yielded 11 runs over 11 innings. However, he pitched well in a home start against Detroit on May 21, giving up three runs on two homers in 6 1-3 innings of a 5-1 loss.

Kluber went 3-0 with a 1.66 ERA in three starts June 11-22, but is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in the last two. He gave up a grand slam and three other hits over 5 1-3 innings of a 6-5 win at Kansas City on Tuesday.

The Tigers' Doug Fister (6-5, 3.80) has also struggled of late, going 0-1 with a 7.16 ERA in his last three starts. For the second time during that stretch, the right-hander allowed six runs, this time in the first two innings of a six-inning effort in a 7-6 win at Toronto on Tuesday.

Fister, 2-1 with a 2.12 ERA in four starts against the Indians in 2012, has yielded two runs and eight hits over 16 innings to win his last two in the series.

Recently named Cleveland All-Star Jason Kipnis is 6 for 17 (.353) with two doubles against Fister. The second baseman had both his 16-game hitting streak and run of reaching base in 36 straight contests end Saturday.

Teammate Mark Reynolds is 0 for 20 with 11 strikeouts in six games, but is 3 for 10 with a homer against Fister.

                        Game: 3
                        Venue: Great American Ball Park

Bronson Arroyo has seemingly been a different pitcher at Great American Ball Park, experiencing much more success there compared to the road.

He'll look to stay hot in Cincinnati and help the Reds to a sixth win in eight games Sunday against the Seattle Mariners.

Arroyo (7-6, 3.50 ERA) hadn't seen a significant variation between his home and away starts in his first six seasons with Cincinnati, going 43-39 with a 3.95 ERA at home, compared to a 48-43 mark with a 4.23 ERA on the road.

This season, however, has been a different story.

The right-hander is 6-1 with a 2.42 ERA at home - with the Reds (50-37) winning nine of his 11 starts - while he's 1-5 with a 5.70 ERA in six outings at other stadiums. Arroyo's been particularly tough over his last seven starts in Cincinnati, compiling a 4-0 record and 1.71 ERA.

One of his more dominant outings came Monday as he limited San Francisco to a run and two hits in six innings. Arroyo was credited with his 14th career complete game and first since July 6, 2012, in a rain-shortened 8-1 victory.

"I'll take it," said Arroyo, who permitted a season-high seven runs over four innings in his previous start at Oakland on June 25. "It might be the only complete game I get all year. On the back of my baseball card 20 years from now, nobody will know the difference."

Including a 4-2 loss in Friday's series opener, the Reds averaged 3.0 runs while going 10-11 since a 12-2 win over the Chicago Cubs on June 11. They broke out of their offensive funk with Saturday's 13-4 victory over the Mariners (38-49), as Jay Bruce, Jack Hannahan and Cesar Izturis combined to go 7 for 12 with eight RBIs.

They helped chase Seattle starter Jeremy Bonderman after five innings in which he gave up six runs. Joe Saunders (6-8, 4.74) will try to pick up the staff after holding Texas to two runs despite 10 hits over 6 2-3 innings in a 9-2 road win Tuesday.

Saunders had previously logged his shortest outing of the season, surrendering six runs in 1 2-3 innings on June 25 against Pittsburgh.

"I wanted to work down in the zone and try to get ahead, something I haven't been doing, and throw strikes," he said after beating the Rangers.

The left-hander will have to overcome his past struggles against Cincinnati, having gone 0-2 with a 6.04 ERA in four starts.

Arroyo is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in four games - three starts - versus the Mariners, but hasn't seen them since 2007.

Although his strikeout per nine innings rate of 4.88 is one of the lowest in baseball, Arroyo could look to take advantage of a Seattle team that has been swinging and missing a lot lately. The Mariners struck out 14 times Saturday, bringing their total to 41 over the last four contests.

Kyle Seager was the only Seattle starter to not strike out Saturday, going 2 for 3 with a two-run homer. He's 12 for 23 with three home runs and seven RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

Raul Ibanez sat out, but could look to extend his hitting streak to 12 games Sunday as he's 5 for 12 off Arroyo.

The San Diego Padres have struggled offensively during their longest losing streak in nearly two years. Considering they'll face one of the top pitchers in baseball in Sunday's series finale against the Washington Nationals, that could very well continue.

Stephen Strasburg takes on San Diego's scuffling lineup looking to deal the visiting Padres a ninth straight defeat.

The Padres scored nine total runs in the first two games of this series after managing seven in the first six losses. They still squandered opportunities, however, going 3 for 23 with runners in scoring position in the last two contests.

Pedro Ciriaco, Chris Denorfia and Logan Forsythe have had an especially rough go of late. Ciriaco and Denorfia are both 3 for 20 and Forsythe is 4 for 30 during the eight-game skid.

San Diego hasn't lost nine in a row since Aug. 24-Sept. 3, 2011.

Now the Padres must face Strasburg (4-6, 2.24 ERA), who has posted a 1.29 ERA in his last nine starts. One of those outings was a 6-2 win at San Diego on May 16 in which he gave up two runs - one earned - and three hits over eight innings.

The right-hander, though, is just 3-2 during that stretch as he's suffered from a lack of run support. The Nationals have lost three of Strasburg's last four starts after totaling four runs for him.

He threw seven scoreless innings and gave up three hits to the Brewers on Tuesday, striking out eight, in a 4-0 loss. Strasburg didn't get a decision.

"You know I'm tired of talking about that," he said of the lack of run support. "These guys battle every single day, just like I do, and it just didn't work for us tonight."

Perhaps Bryce Harper, announced as an All-Star starter Saturday, can provide some offense for Strasburg. Manager Davey Johnson initially planned on giving Harper Saturday and Sunday off after he went 1 for 19 in his first five games since returning from left knee bursitis.

Harper, though, successfully lobbied to play Saturday and went 1 for 2 with a walk and three RBIs, including driving in the tying run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly.

Harper and the Nationals will face Robbie Erlin (1-1, 4.34) for the first time as the rookie left-hander makes his fourth career start. Erlin took the loss in his last outing, giving up three runs in 3 2-3 innings of a 4-1 defeat at Boston on Tuesday, his shortest start of the season.

A day after getting Everth Cabrera back from injury, the Padres lost another player Saturday. Catcher Yasmani Grandal will be placed on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a right knee injury in a home plate collision with Anthony Rendon.

Jesus Guzman remained hot Saturday, going 2 for 4 with a three-run homer that was the Padres' only hit in 14 at_bats with runners in scoring position. He's 9 for 18 with four doubles and two home runs in six games during San Diego's losing streak.

                            Game: 3

If the Philadelphia Phillies are going to turn their season around, they might have to it without one of their key players for an extended period of time.

A day after placing slugger Ryan Howard on the disabled list, the Phillies look to bounce back from a lopsided loss to the visiting Atlanta Braves on Sunday.

Prior to Saturday's 13-4 defeat, Philadelphia scratched Howard from the starting lineup then placed him on the DL because of inflammation in his left knee. Howard, batting .266 with 11 homers and 43 RBIs, hit a solo shot in a 5-4 victory Friday.

"That's a big blow,' manager Charlie Manuel said. "His presence means something to us. He's still a threat.'

The Phillies (42-46) likely will need Howard healthy if they're to have any chance of making a serious run at the postseason. Howard, bothered by knee issues since May, is expected to have an MRI in a day or two to determine whether he'll need surgery.

"We can't just think about the short term here, we have to think about the long term on Ryan as well," general manager Ruben Amaro told the Phillies' official website. "I think we're going to be pretty conservative with him. If it needs surgery - hopefully it doesn't - if it needs surgery we'll take care of it. If it doesn't, we'll try to rehab him and get him back."

Recently named All-Star Domonic Brown is one Phillie that will be expected to help fill the offensive void. The outfielder has batted .311 in his last 15 games and has a .316 average against the NL East-leading Braves (50-37) this season.

The Phillies will try to regroup behind Jonathan Pettibone (4-3, 3.99 ERA), who is 1-0 with a 2.55 ERA in his last three starts. He gave up a home run and two other hits while matching a career high with six strikeouts in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-1 win at Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

This will be the right-hander's first appearance versus Atlanta, which totaled 10 runs and 26 hits while losing its previous three contests before setting season highs for runs and hits (19) on Saturday.

"A lot of guys swung the bats well,' manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We had good hitting up and down the lineup.'

Brian McCann had four hits and Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer. McCann has gone 16 for 28 in his last seven games, while two of Heyward's four hits in 19 at_bats against the Phillies this season have been home runs.

Atlanta's Kris Medlen (6-7, 3.11) has gone 5-1 with a 2.50 ERA in his past six starts. He's allowed three runs in each of his last three outings, most recently Tuesday when he overcame nine hits in six innings of an 11-3 victory over Miami.

The right-hander has a 3.94 ERA in three starts versus Philadelphia, but dropped to 1-1 against the Phillies after yielding two runs, six hits and four walks in five innings of a 2-0 loss April 4.

Philadelphia catcher Carlos Ruiz has one hit in his last 11 at_bats against the Braves, but is 4 for 6 with a double versus Medlen.

After a strong return from his first career trip to the disabled list, Tampa Bay's David Price hopes he's getting a fresh start to the 2013 season.

Looking to win his fourth straight start against Chicago, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner tries to help the Rays complete their first-ever series sweep of the lowly White Sox on Sunday.

Out since mid-May with a triceps strain, Price (2-4, 4.65 ERA) allowed three hits and struck out 10 without a walk while throwing 70 pitches over seven innings of an 8-0 win at Houston on Tuesday.

"That's probably the best I've felt on a baseball field maybe in my entire life, honestly,' said Price, who went 20-5 with a 2.56 ERA in 2012. "I felt like that's the most control I've had of a baseball game in a very long time. I think that was better than I threw the ball really at any point last year.

"It's huge for me, my confidence."

In a way, Price felt his time on the DL proved to be somewhat positive.

"Just letting me regroup with everything," he told the Rays' official website.

"The way the first nine starts went, it makes it kind of tough to sleep at night. "That's not me. I felt like I got back to myself (Tuesday)."

Price's other victory this season came at Chicago on April 28, when he gave up three runs and struck out nine in seven innings of an 8-3 win. He's posted a 2.05 ERA during his three-start winning streak against the White Sox.

After being named to the All-Star team, Tampa Bay's Ben Zobrist had two hits and Luke Scott delivered an RBI double as the Rays (48-40) won their third straight, 3-0 on Saturday. Matt Moore pitched 6 1-3 innings to best Chicago All-Star Chris Sale as the Rays won for the seventh time in eight contests.

"We're playing great right now,' Moore said.

The White Sox, outscored 29-10 during a four-game skid in the series, have dropped 26 of 36.

Zobrist, 1 for 22 in five games prior to Saturday, has gone 7 for 13 in his last three against the White Sox. However, he's 2 for 14 with seven strikeouts against John Danks (2-5, 4.38).

The left-hander snapped a three-game slide Tuesday, allowing two runs in seven innings of a 5-2 win over Baltimore. He's yielded three earned runs in 14 1-3 innings over his last two starts.

"Definitely my last few, I've felt I've had command," Danks told the White Sox's official website. "Just trying not to hurt myself. Trying not to hurt guys, trying to keep the ball in the ballpark."

Including postseason, Danks has gone 6-3 with a 3.92 ERA in 10 starts against the Rays, last facing them in 2011.

White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham is 9 for 18 in July, and is batting .409 in his last 12 games.

He's hit .350 (7 for 20) in his past five at Tropicana Field, but is 1 for 18 against Price.

Batting .406 during a 16-game hitting streak, Tampa Bay's James Loney is likely to be in the lineup after he was used as a late defensive replacement Saturday.

The Kansas City Royals' lackluster record might be even more meager without their occasional showcases of grittiness.

After rallying for their first victory against the Oakland Athletics this season, the Royals will try to close out the three-game series in winning style Sunday.

Kansas City (41-43) hasn't been over .500 since May 18, but recorded its major league-best 28th comeback victory and third this month Saturday. Jarrod Dyson drove in the go-ahead run in a 4-3 win with a two-out infield single in the eighth inning.

"Sometimes games aren't going to go our way, but we aren't going to hang our heads," said Dyson, who had a season-high three hits after going 0 for 10 in his previous four games. "We're going to keep battling. You can see it in here, see it out there. Everybody is working hard every day."

The victory snapped Oakland's five-game win streak in the series, and Luis Mendoza (2-4, 4.41 ERA) will try to follow by earning his first victory against the A's (51-37).

Mendoza is 0-1 in three career starts versus Oakland despite posting a 1.98 ERA. He gave up three runs over six-plus innings in his only matchup this season, a 4-3 loss May 19.

Mendoza is 0-1 with a 5.74 ERA in his last three outings and didn't make it past the fourth inning for only the second start this season Tuesday against Cleveland. He gave up four runs and matched a season high with four walks in a 6-5 loss, but didn't get a decision.

"I was just trying to figure what was wrong with my mechanics and my release points," said the right-hander, who threw 86 pitches in four innings.

Mendoza will again pitch opposite A.J. Griffin (6-6, 3.95), who gave up three runs over six innings without a decision in his lone appearance against Kansas City.

Griffin was charged with seven runs and a career-high 10 hits Tuesday against the Chicago Cubs but avoided the loss when his teammates rallied for an 8-7 win. He recorded his first career shutout and complete game - a two-hitter - in his previous outing June 26 against Cincinnati.

"I felt fine out there," Griffin told the team's website. "They just got the big hit when they needed it. I felt like I was making good pitches, and they really didn't make hard contact that much. I'm just fortunate enough to be on a team that scores a ton of runs."

The A's are trying for an eighth win in 11 games and Grant Balfour is in position to establish a franchise record by converting 41 consecutive saves. Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley converted 40 in a row Sept. 15, 1991-Aug. 7, 1992.

Kansas City's Eric Hosmer, batting .406 with five homers in his last eight games, hit an RBI double off Griffin in May. Alex Gordon went 3 for 3 against the right-hander in that game.

Gordon returned Saturday after missing two games following a collision with the bullpen fence in Wednesday's 6-5 victory over Cleveland.

Jed Lowrie is 3 for 6 with two doubles all-time against Mendoza, and Seth Smith is 3 for 5 with a double.
