Preview: Tigers (45-38) at Blue Jays (41-43)
    Game: 4
    Venue: Rogers Centre
    Date: July 04, 2013 7:07 PM EDT

Memories of his last outing in Toronto might provide some fuel for Justin Verlander to end his current drought.

Pitching at Rogers Centre for the first time since throwing his most recent no-hitter there, Verlander tries to avoid matching a career high with his fifth straight winless start Thursday night in the finale of what has become a contentious four-game set with the Blue Jays.

Verlander (8-5, 3.77 ERA) posted a 4.85 ERA, but received an average 11.08 runs of support to win four straight starts May 22-June 7. In four outing since, his teammates have scored nine runs with the right-hander on the mound while he's gone 0-1 with a 3.96 ERA.

He went winless in five starts Aug. 27-Sept. 20, 2008, for Detroit (45-38).

Verlander gave up three runs and nine hits in eight innings of a 4-3, 10-inning loss at Tampa Bay on Saturday. Though he could not hold an early 3-0 lead, manager Jim Leyland was pleased with the performance.

"I thought that was the best that he's thrown in a long time," Leyland told the Tigers' official website.

He threw exceptionally well at Toronto on May 7, 2011, when he struck out four and walked one while facing the minimum in a 9-0 victory. It came less than four years after Verlander no-hit Milwaukee on June 12, 2007.

Verlander is 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in four starts versus Toronto after he went 0-2 with an 11.40 ERA in his first three.

He'll again have a tough act to follow after Max Scherzer pitched into the seventh to become the first pitcher in 27 years to go 13-0 after Detroit's 6-2 win Wednesday. Victor Martinez and Alex Avila each homered as the Tigers won their second straight since losing six of seven.

Toronto (41-43) has allowed an average of 4.6 runs while going 3-7 since it gave up 2.5 during an 11-game winning streak. The Blue Jays had nine hits but stranded eight runners and committed three errors Wednesday.

They last dropped a home set May 3-5 to Seattle.

It remains to be seen if anything stems from Wednesday's bench-clearing incident that followed Detroit's Torii Hunter taking exception to being hit by Todd Redmond in the sixth inning. No punches were thrown.

That was preceded by Colby Rasmus' hard slide into Detroit's Omar Infante at second base in the fourth. Infante, 11 for 23 in seven games, will miss the finale with a shin contusion.

"Trust me, it's nothing against Redmond,' Hunter said. "It was all Rasmus sliding late with his spikes up.'

Rasmus felt there was nothing wrong with the slide.

"I go in hard every time,' he said. "My intention is never to hurt anybody or nothing like that."

The Blue Jays hope to get back on track behind Esmil Rogers (3-3, 3.12), who is 2-1 with a 2.18 ERA in six starts. He allowed six hits and struck out six over six scoreless innings but did not factor in the decision of a 6-2 win at Boston on Saturday.

"That's what he's capable of," manager John Gibbons told the Blue Jays' official website. "He's got the great arm, and he's got the good breaking pitches, too.

The right-hander will make his first start versus Detroit, but is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA in six relief appearances.

Toronto slugger Jose Bautista is 11 for 21 in six games since he hit .135 in his previous 14. He's 3 for 10 with two doubles and a homer versus Verlander.

Teammate Edwin Encarnacion could miss a fourth straight contest with a hamstring injury.

Martinez is batting .372 with two homers and 10 RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak at Toronto.

Preview: Marlins (31-52) at Braves (49-35)
      Game: 3
      Venue: Turner Field
      Date: July 04, 2013 7:10 PM EDT

While the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves have dominated the last-place Miami Marlins of late, manager Mike Redmond's club is coming off a rare win in the series.

Pulling out another could prove difficult with a matchup against Julio Teheran in store.

Teheran and the Braves try to get back to their winning ways against the visiting Marlins in Thursday night's series finale.

Atlanta (49-35) had taken 18 of 21 from Miami (31-52) - including eight straight by a 40-10 margin - before falling 6-3 on Wednesday. Justin Ruggiano delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in the fifth inning and Jeff Mathis added a two-run double in the eighth.

Each of Ruggiano's 12 homers have come on the road, tied for the seventh-most consecutive road homers to open a season. The record is 17 by Washington's Goose Goslin in 1926.

Another big offensive effort may be hard to come by against Teheran (6-4, 3.12 ERA). The right-hander, among the major league leaders with a 2.27 ERA since April 23, has allowed two runs or fewer in all but three of 12 outings over that stretch.

"We know what he's capable of," shortstop Andrelton Simmons told MLB's official website. "He looks more confident off the mound, and he's starting to do what he's been doing in the minor leagues for a couple years back, so it's nice to see that."

Teheran has been particularly dominant at home, where he has struck out 29 in 20 scoreless innings during a three-start winning streak. The 22-year-old fanned 10 over six innings of four-hit ball Friday in a 3-0 victory over Arizona.

"He's got swing-and-miss stuff, which is a good thing to have," manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We knew that, we saw the arm."

Having never faced Miami, Teheran will need to be careful against Mathis. The veteran catcher, who hit .098 with three RBIs in his first 17 games after debuting May 16 due to a broken collarbone, has since gone 6 for 17 with two homers and 13 RBIs over a five-game stretch.

The Marlins, meanwhile, are looking forward to seeing what they have in Henderson Alvarez. Acquired in November's blockbuster 12-player trade with Toronto, Alvarez is set to make his season debut after missing the first three months with shoulder inflammation in his throwing arm.

"I think there is a little bit of an unknown in how he is going to pitch for us, because we didn't see him pitch much before he got hurt," Redmond said of Alvarez, who will be on an 85-pitch limit. "We'll see how he does and how his pitches are and how much he has to grind."

The 23-year-old right-hander went 10-17 with a 4.52 ERA in 41 starts with the Blue Jays over the previous two years.

"He's another good, live young arm," Mathis said. "He knows how to pitch, and he's had success. He has some innings under his belt at the big league level. We're hoping he can come in and pitch like he is capable of and stay healthy."

The only Braves player with any experience against Alvarez is B.J. Upton, who is 3 for 12 with a double in their matchups. Upton is batting a major league-worst .177, going 1 for 14 with six strikeouts against the Marlins this year.

Despite Wednesday's loss, Atlanta is 21-7 at home since May 5. The Braves have only dropped back-to-back games once over that stretch.

Preview: Mariners (37-47) at Rangers (48-36)
        Game: 3
        Venue: Rangers Ballpark in Arlington
        Date: July 04, 2013 8:05 PM EDT

Hisashi Iwakuma has looked the part of an All-Star for most of the year, but he's slipped recently.

The Seattle Mariners hope he can return to form Thursday night as they seek their first road sweep of the Texas Rangers in more than 11 years.

Iwakuma (7-3, 2.42 ERA) last won June 10, which he followed with two straight defeats. He'd be trying to end a three-game losing streak if Seattle's offense hadn't bailed him out with a late comeback in Friday's 5-4 win over the Cubs.

While the right-hander did throw eight innings - the ninth time in 11 outings he's gone at least seven - he was also charged with four earned runs for the third straight contest. The only time he gave up four or more runs in his previous 14 starts was when he allowed five at Cleveland on May 20.

Solo home runs given up by Iwakuma accounted for two of Chicago's four runs against him.

"Besides the two home runs I gave up - they were to the fat part of the plate - overall I thought it was good," he said through a translator.

But three homers also accounted for all four of Oakland's runs off Iwakuma one start earlier. He had allowed a total of five home runs in his previous six starts.

Seattle would likely be happy if they saw the same Iwakuma that helped them beat the Rangers in two starts earlier this season. He went 1-0 while allowing three runs and eight hits over 14 2-3 innings in those games, striking out 14.

A two-run homer from Kyle Seager was the difference in Seattle's 4-2 victory in 10 innings Wednesday, bringing the Mariners (37-47) within one win of their first sweep of a series of three games or more at Texas since April 12-15, 2002.

Looking to keep the Rangers (48-36) from being swept at home for the second time this season will be Martin Perez (2-1, 2.37). The left-hander won his second straight start in a 4-0 victory over Cincinnati on Friday, throwing 6 2-3 innings. He limited St. Louis to two runs and five hits over seven innings in his previous start.

Perez seemingly locked up a spot in Texas' rotation in spring training before breaking his forearm. The 22-year-old now seems to be seizing the moment after being called up from the minors for a second time this year.

"Throwing strikes, pounding the strike zone, not getting caught in any patterns, great mound presence. All of the above," manager Ron Washington said. "He's doing everything he's supposed to do to be successful."

He gave up four runs - three earned - with six hits and two walks in four innings of a 6-3 loss in Seattle on Sept. 21, but also threw 5 1-3 scoreless innings over two relief appearances earlier last season.

Seager is 6 for 13 in his last three games after going 3 for 5 on Wednesday but is hitless in five at_bats against Perez.

Ian Kinsler, who homered Wednesday for the first time in 24 contests, is 6 for 12 off Iwakuma with three home runs.

Texas DH Lance Berkman was 1 for 4 in his first game after missing four with a sore right knee.

Preview: Dodgers (40-43) at Rockies (41-44)
          Game: 3
          Venue: Coors Field
          Date: July 04, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Dodgers may be without Yaisel Puig on Thursday night. But they might be just fine sans their Cuban phenom if Hanley Ramirez can continue his recent production.

Ramirez and the Dodgers encounter one of baseball's hottest pitchers as they look for their first road sweep of the season against Jhoulys Chacin and the Colorado Rockies.

Puig is day-to-day with a bruised left hip suffered in the Dodgers' 10-8 win Wednesday. He left the game an inning after running into the right-field wall to track down Nolan Arenado's flyball in the fifth. A precautionary X-ray was negative.

"He just plays like that," manager Don Mattingly said. "They kind of warned us coming up he plays like that and he's going to get hurt."

The 22-year-old Puig, named NL player and rookie of the month for June, was 1 for 3 with an RBI before exiting. He's hitting .440 with an OPS of 1.209 in 28 games.

But Ramirez served as the star Wednesday, going 4 for 5, scoring three runs and finishing a triple short of the cycle to extend his hitting streak to 14 games. During the streak, he's 27 for 54 with 16 RBIs while posting a 1.460 OPS.

"Hanley's just a beast," Mattingly said. "He seems to be on a mission this year. He had a rough start to the year being hurt, but he's been focused all year."

Ramirez isn't the only hot bat for the Dodgers (40-43), whose 10th win in 11 games pulled them into a tie with Colorado (41-44) for second in the NL West and kept them 2 1/2 games back of Arizona.

Adrian Gonzalez, who homered for the second straight game Wednesday, has four homers over his last 11 games while slugging .628. While A.J. Ellis is 7 for 16 in his last four games, Matt Kemp has driven in a run in three straight and homered Wednesday for the first time since returning from a strained hamstring June 25.

Los Angeles tagged Chacin (7-3, 3.59 ERA) for five runs and nine hits over six innings in a 7-6, 10-inning loss June 1. But Chacin has been much less vulnerable recently, winning four straight starts while posting a 1.26 ERA in 28 2-3 innings. The right-hander hasn't surrendered a home run during that stretch and has held opponents scoreless over his last 15 innings.

A more aggressive approach seems to be behind Chacin's improvement. He averaged 15.5 pitches per inning through his first 12 outings, throwing seven innings twice and never going any deeper. In Chacin's last three starts, he's gone 8 2-3, seven, and eight innings, respectively, while needing 11.6 pitches per inning.

"I've just been trying to throw strikes. I've been trying to attack the hitter and make them swing," said Chacin, who is 6-5 with a 3.50 ERA against the Dodgers. "That's what I've been doing the last three or four starts. Everything has been working out and my fastball has been strong."

Los Angeles scheduled starter Chris Capuano (2-5, 4.72) had not allowed a run in back-to-back starts before getting ripped for seven in 3 2-3 innings of a 16-1 loss to Philadelphia on Friday.

The left-hander now looks to reverse his fortune against Colorado. He was 4-2 with a 1.70 ERA in his first six career outings versus the Rockies, but in eight starts since he's 1-6 with a 6.11 ERA.

Carlos Gonzalez, who went 2 for 4 on Wednesday with his NL-leading 23rd home run, is 3 for 13 off Capuano.

Ellis is 6 for 12 off Chacin while Gonzalez is 3 for 4, but Kemp is 5 for 28 with nine strikeouts and Ramirez is 0 for 3.

Preview: Cardinals (50-33) at Angels (40-44)
            Game: 3
            Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
            Date: July 04, 2013 9:05 PM EDT

Fans of the St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels may continue to be puzzled by Albert Pujols' sharp decline.

A victory by the home team in Thursday night's series finale in Anaheim could be even more surprising to both.

That's because the Cardinals have won nine straight road outings by Adam Wainwright while the Angels are 1-7 in home starts by Joe Blanton in a pitching matchup that overwhelmingly favors St. Louis.

Pujols has been the story of this series with the three-time NL MVP facing St. Louis (50-33) for the first time but he's 0 for 7 in this series to drop to 4 for 41 over his last 10 games.

These teams have split the first two of this three-game set with the Cardinals ending the Angels' seven-game win streak with Wednesday's 12-2 rout.

"After winning that many in a row, you almost always think you're due for a butt-kicking,' said Angels right fielder Josh Hamilton, 11 for 27 (.407) during an eight-game hit streak. ``You'd rather lose one like this than a really close one, but you've got to put it behind you."

St. Louis has to like its chances of salvaging a split of an eight-game road trip behind Wainwright (11-5, 2.22 ERA), the NL pitcher of the month for June after going 4-2 with a 1.77 ERA over six outings.

Wainwright improved to 8-0 with a 2.32 ERA in his last nine road starts Saturday with a five-hitter in a 7-1 victory over Oakland for his major league-best fourth complete game.

"He had everything," manager Mike Matheny said. "Mainly, he was very good at locating the fastball and using the curveball in different ways, different speeds, different breaks and making big pitches when he needed to."

The right-hander is one victory behind Washington's Jordan Zimmermann for the NL lead heading into his first start against the Angels. He's 5-1 with a 3.21 ERA in six career road interleague starts.

If those gaudy figures for Wainwright don't make this contest enough of a daunting task for Los Angeles (40-44), how Blanton (2-10, 5.07) has fared in Anaheim only adds to how difficult gaining a victory could be.

Blanton is 0-4 with a 5.04 ERA in eight home starts, with the Angels losing each except a 12-9 win over the White Sox on May 18. He is tied with Tampa Bay's Roberto Hernandez for the AL's most defeats.

The right-hander, however, has pitched well lately, going 1-0 with a 2.14 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 21 innings over his last three outings.

Blanton is 3-2 with a 3.68 ERA in seven starts against the Cardinals, posting a 9.00 ERA in two last year with two different teams.

Allen Craig is 3 for 4 with two homers against Blanton and Matt Holliday 5 for 13 with two home runs.

Holliday, though, has yet to play in this series due to a pinched nerve in his neck.

"Hopefully tomorrow he's a step closer, if not able to be in there," Matheny told the Cardinals' official website.

Jon Jay and Matt Carpenter each homered and drove in three runs Wednesday and St. Louis used a seven-run second inning to take command. Yadier Molina added three hits, improving to 5 for 8 in the series and his average to an NL-best .352.

The Angels had allowed 11 runs over their previous six games before Wednesday.

                            • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

-- Saints' coach Sean Payton is caddying for Ryan Palmer at the PGA Tour event this week at Greenbrier in West Virginia.

-- Brad Stevens gets $22M, six years from the Celtics. Very surprising.

-- Very bad timing for Butler; recruiting season starts Wednesday.

-- Butler's odds to win the national title dropped from 60-1 to 100-1; odds on the Celtics winning the NBA title stayed at 100-1.

-- I'd love to see the reaction if Butler hired George Karl to replace Stevens.

-- We're lucky to live in a free country and be able to do what we want. Happy 237th Birthday America.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Happy 237 birthday, America.........

                              13) Tuition/room and board at Creighton University is $44,000 a year, pretty steep, but college basketball coaches make seven-figure salaries, so when Grant Gibbs was given a 6th year of eligibility by the NCAA, Bluejays’ star Doug McDermott gave up his scholarship and will walk on, so Gibbs can have a scholarship.

McDermott’s dad Greg is Creighton’s coach; his team is already at the scholarship limit (13), so he’ll foot the bill for his son’s tuition so Gibbs can be on scholarship. If the school has any street sense, they’ll slip in a $44,000 raise into McDermott’s next contract.

                              12) CFL write-ups started this week on this website; check out the NHL page every week for info on each and every CFL game.

                              11) Only in the CFL is there a rematch in Week 2; Montreal Alouettes won in Winnipeg last week; the Blue Bombers visit Montreal this week.

Schedule makers must down a serious amount of Labatt’s making out that schedule every year.

                              10) Blue Jay/Pirate bullpens have worked the most innings in big leagues; they need to fortify their starting rotations, to take the stress off their relievers, or else…….

                              9) Still not used to hearing “New Orleans Pelicans”; NBA’s Hornets have become the Pelicans, eventually the Bobcats will go back to being the Hornets, but the Wizards aren’t going back to being the Bullets. Go figure.

                              8) Manu Ginobili re-upped for two more years with the Spurs; an underrated story is the strong foreign presence on San Antonio. Nine of their 15 guys on the playoff roster this spring were born outside the United States.

                              7) Kids, put down your golf clubs, your basketballs and go take acting lessons. James Gandolfini’s estate is being estimated at $70 million, and he didn’t have to retire when he was 35, like most athletes. Actors can go until they’re 75 or 80, God willing. Its sad Gandolfini passed away so young, but he made a crazy amount of money.

                              6) People are forgetting the Padres are struggling because their double play combo (Gyorko/Cabrera) is on the DL; what team wouldn’t struggle with the heart of their defense out? San Diego gets those two guys back and adds a player or two, and they can win the NL West.

                              5) Michelle Obama has complained that the White House “….is like a really nice prison.” Apparently she isn’t the first First Lady to have that complaint, but keep it to yourself.

Being married to the President makes her wealthy for life, complete with Secret Service protection. There are worse things.

                              4) This is a little unfair to point out since he just pitched a no-hitter and should be celebrated, but Homer Bailey’s 4.36 career ERA is the worst of any pitcher who has thrown 2+ no-hitters. Pitching in that small ballpark in Cincinnati ain’t easy though.

                              3) Its amusing listen to nitwits say that Brad Stevens going to Boston is a bad decision on his part; even if he is a total flop, he banks $22M for six years, then he'll go back and have his pick of college jobs, much like out west, when Mike Montgomery went from Stanford to the Warriors to Cal. .

Its a no-lose situation for Stevens, a devastating blow to Butler as they head into the new Big East conference, their third league in three years.

                              2) Former Syracuse assistant coach Bernie Fine has dropped his lawsuit against ESPN; you have to think they settled out of court, but no one is saying. ESPN helped ruin the guy’s career for no good reason; least they could do is pay him off.

                              1) While I don’t think Yasiel Puig should be in the All-Star Game, if he keeps up his fine play and the Dodgers make the playoffs, I wouldn’t be against voting for him for MVP. He’s setting an incredible pace of production, but he bruised his hip running into the fence Wednesday night in Denver-- he'll have to tone done his wreckless style a little to stay healthy.
