Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

For the week of May 27-June 2.

        Hot team: Houston Astros
        Last week: 6-1
        Season: 20-37
Upcoming schedule: at Angels, vs. Orioles, at Royals

Skinny: It’s not often we get to praise the Astros for their stellar play. Houston has won five straight heading into its series finale with the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

        Cold team: Chicago White Sox
        Last week: 0-6
        Season: 24-30
Upcoming schedule: at Mariners, vs. A’s

Skinny: The White Sox were shut out three times last week – twice by the Oakland A’s and once by the Chicago Cubs. The six-game losing streak comes on the heels of a stretch where Chicago won five of six to get back into contention in the AL Central.

        Over team: Baltimore Orioles
        Last week: 5-2 over/under
        Season: 33-21-3 over/under
Upcoming schedule: at Astros, at Rays

Skinny: The Orioles continue to be a hot over bet thanks to their high-powered offense (5.5 runs per game)and have now exceeded the total in nine of their last 11 games.

        Under team: Kansas City Royals
        Last week: 1-5-1 over/under
        Season: 20-32-2 over/under
Upcoming schedule: vs. Twins, vs. Astros

Skinny: The bats have gone silent in Kansas City recently. The Royals averaged just 2.5 runs per game in seven contests last week.

Preview: Rays (31-25) at Tigers (30-25)
                Game: 1
                Venue: Comerica Park
                Date: June 04, 2013 7:08 PM EDT

Thanks to a decision by Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon, the pitcher that has been toughest to hit in baseball will get a chance to face the hitter with the best average.

Matt Moore will try to improve to 9-0 as he faces Miguel Cabrera and the Detroit Tigers in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game set at Comerica Park.

Maddon could have used Moore on Sunday in Cleveland after the left-hander was limited to one 11-pitch inning Friday before that outing was cut short due to rain in a 9-2 victory over the Indians. The manager chose to start the budding star Tuesday instead, creating this enticing matchup.

"But there's the off day (Monday), so why really push it?" Maddon told the Rays' official website.

Moore (8-0, 2.18 ERA) is limiting hitters to a .178 average for the best mark in baseball, while reigning AL MVP Cabrera leads the majors with a .367 average and 65 RBIs.

The only time these two met was April 10, 2012. Cabrera lined out once and walked twice as Moore gave up two runs over 6 2-3 innings and did not get a decision in a 5-2 loss in his only career outing versus Detroit.

The Tigers (30-25) have lost seven of 12 games when opponents start left-handers, although Cabrera is hitting .417 against them and Jhonny Peralta .412 for the AL's best marks. Prince Fielder is a .359 hitter versus left-handers and 0 for 2 against Moore.

Strangely, Detroit is searching for offense after losing five of six. Outside of Saturday's 10-3 victory in Baltimore, the Tigers have scored 10 runs in that span.

While Detroit averages 5.2 runs to lead the majors, Tampa Bay (31-25) is not far behind at 5.0. The Rays have been even hotter with a major league-best 6.1 runs per game since May 17 while winning 11 of 16.

"One through nine, we feel pretty good about scoring runs right now," Maddon said.

While top hitters James Loney and Evan Longoria are both batting lower than .255 in this stretch, Matt Joyce is hitting .340 and Kelly Johnson .321 with that duo combining for 28 RBIs over the last 16 games.

"I think there's plenty of talent and potential, but it's nice to see when guys come together as a team and start finding that groove," Johnson said.

Anibal Sanchez (5-5, 2.79), 4-1 with a 1.70 ERA in five home starts, will be tasked with slowing down the Rays. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 4.78 ERA in four career starts against them, although Johnson is 5 for 26 against him.

Sanchez had yielded one run over 15 innings before Pittsburgh scored four times off him in the seventh inning Wednesday in a 5-3 loss. He was charged with five runs total.

"I think I missed some pitches and they hit them," said Sanchez, limiting hitters to a .168 average at Comerica Park. "I take responsibility, that's part of the game."

Detroit is 10-3 against Tampa Bay over the last two seasons, with Cabrera hitting .364 with 11 walks.

Preview: Indians (30-26) at Yankees (31-25)
                  Game: 2
                  Venue: Yankee Stadium
                  Date: June 04, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

No matter how poorly the New York Yankees have played of late, they continue to find success against the Cleveland Indians.

The Yankees look for a fifth consecutive home victory over an Indians team trying to avoid a seventh straight road defeat overall Tuesday night.

New York (32-25) dropped seven of eight, including four of five on this eight-game homestand, before Monday's 7-4 win over Cleveland. Mark Teixeira hit a grand slam for his first homer and Brett Gardner delivered a tiebreaking double as the Yankees pounded out 10 hits after totaling eight and one run in losing their previous two versus Boston.

The Yankees have won nine of 11 versus Cleveland (30-27), and 11 of 13 against the Indians in the Bronx.

Teixeira is 2 for 12 in four games since making his season debut Friday after dealing with a wrist injury, but hopes Monday was the start of a positive run for himself and the team.

"We needed that,' he said. "I know it's going to take a few weeks to get back in the rhythm of playing every day and seeing big league pitching every day, but this is a good first step.'

Gardner is 11 for 23 (.478) in his last six home games against the Indians.

Ex-Indian Travis Hafner homered Monday - his second hit in the last 20 at_bats.

A winner his previous two starts and feeling fine after taking a line drive off his forearm, scheduled Yankees starter David Phelps (3-3, 4.65 ERA) gave up five runs, four hits and walked two while recording one out in Wednesday's 9-4 loss to the Mets. The right-hander is the first Yankee starter who failed to get more than one out in a game since Darrell Rasner on May 19, 2007 - also against the Mets.

"It's nothing at all. Arm felt great (Wednesday). Just wasn't making pitches,' Phelps said. "The ball was just up and in the middle of the plate a lot.'

He was solid at Cleveland on May 13, allowing a homer to Jason Kipnis, three other hits and five walks while striking out seven in 1-0 loss.

The Indians have lost 10 of 14 overall and been outscored 40-18 during their last six away from home. Michael Bourn had three hits and Carlos Santana two RBIs for Cleveland, which left Yankee Stadium further frustrated after shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera suffered a quad injury.

"Were going to send him back to Cleveland (on Tuesday) to get scanned and, most likely, this is headed toward the DL," manager Terry Francona said.

Ex-Yankee Nick Swisher went 0 for 4 with a walk in his return to the Bronx. He's 1 for 17 in his last five contests.

After giving up nine runs in eight innings of his two previous starts, scheduled Cleveland starter Scott Kazmir (3-2, 5.13) has allowed three in 12 innings while going 1-0 in his last two. He yielded one run in seven innings of a 7-1 win over Cincinnati on Thursday.

"Everything was working for the most part," Kazmir told the Indians' official website. "Breaking ball was a little erratic, but at the same time I was able to get it in a location where I wouldn't get hurt."

Facing the Yankees for the first time since 2010, the left-hander is 7-7 with a 3.58 ERA in 17 starts against them.

Preview: Mets (22-32) at Nationals (28-29)
                    Game: 1
                    Venue: Nationals Park
                    Date: June 04, 2013 7:05 PM EDT

The Washington Nationals and New York Mets struggled at the plate on the road against division rivals over the weekend.

Both clubs are looking for answers heading into Tuesday night's opener of a three-game series at Nationals Park.

Washington (28-29) owns a losing record for the first time since April 30 after dropping two of three at Atlanta. The Nationals, who are without injured superstar Bryce Harper, hit .190 and totaled seven runs with two walks and 20 strikeouts in the series.

"Half the ballclub is not doing things they're capable of offensively," manager Davey Johnson said. "I look up there, a bunch of guys are hitting .150. There's too good a quality of players here to be doing that. I'm sure we'll pick it up. It's just a tough time."

The Mets (22-32) swept four games last week from their city rival Yankees before heading to Miami over the weekend to face a Marlins team that had dropped a season-worst nine straight. New York batted .212, totaled eight runs and was swept while falling to 3-6 against the majors' worst team.

"Getting swept is not fun especially after sweeping the Yankees and feeling pretty good and then get our butt beat,' first baseman Ike Davis said.

Johnson is looking forward to the likely return Tuesday by outfielder Jayson Werth, who has been out since May 2 with a strained right hamstring. Werth is hitting .260 with four homers and 10 RBIs in 27 games.

"The offense is just sputtering a little bit," Johnson said. "It'll be good to get Jayson back. ... That'd be a shot in the arm."

Other Nationals are struggling. Second baseman Danny Espinosa is hitting .158, Roger Bernadina is at .161, Steve Lombardozzi at .231 and Adam LaRoche at .243.

"We deserve to be where we're at right now," LaRoche said. "And we're still not in awful shape.

"That only goes so far. We're pretty deep into the season, so we've got to get it going or we won't be there at the end."

Mets manager Terry Collins was encouraged slightly by the production at the plate in Sunday's 11-6 defeat. The slumping Davis, who owns a .272 slugging percentage, drove in three runs and had one of three homers for New York.

"Maybe a couple of guys are breaking out and we'll be better offensively so maybe things are changing," Collins said.

The Mets handed Jordan Zimmermann (8-3, 2.37 ERA) his first loss April 21, as the Nationals starter allowed two runs over a season-low five innings in a 96-pitch effort. He still owns a 1.85 ERA over his last six starts against New York.

David Wright is 9 for 28 with two homers against the right-hander, although the third baseman has one hit in his last 15 at_bats.

Zimmermann had not yielded more than three runs in 15 straight regular-season contests before surrendering seven over six-plus innings in Wednesday's 9-6 defeat at Baltimore.

The Mets had dropped Jeremy Hefner's first nine starts before he gave up three runs over six innings in a 9-4 victory over the Yankees on Wednesday.

Hefner (1-5, 4.74) is 0-3 with a 5.57 ERA in four outings against Washington, and Espinosa is 5 for 10 with two homers and two doubles against the right-hander.

Preview: Marlins (16-41) at Phillies (27-30)
                      Game: 2
                      Venue: Citizens Bank Park

If Domonic Brown can continue his recent power surge, Jonathan Pettibone will likely to have an easier time bouncing back from his first loss for the Philadelphia Phillies.

The NL's home run leader looks to stay hot and help the Phillies move above .500 on their homestand Tuesday night when they take on the lowly Miami Marlins.

Brown had three hits and his 17th home run, tying Detroit's Miguel Cabrera for second in the big leagues behind Baltimore's Chris Davis (20), as Philadelphia rolled to a 7-2 victory in Monday's series opener.

Following a three-game losing streak, the Phillies (28-30) have won two in a row to even their record to 3-3 on this eight-game homestand. They've also won three straight over the Marlins (16-42), who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Brown, the NL player of the month in May, has sparked a Philadelphia offense that ranks near the bottom of the majors with 209 runs.

The left fielder had 12 homers and 25 RBIs last month, and is hitting .484 with eight homers and 15 RBIs over his last eight games.

"I'm not really big on numbers,'said Brown, who also has four home runs and nine RBIs in his last eight versus the Marlins. "I watch my at_bats every day, see which ones are good and try to keep improving.'

He's had success against Marlins scheduled starter Ricky Nolasco (3-6, 3.69 ERA), going 6 for 12 lifetime with a homer, double and triple. Nolasco, though, is 6-2 with a 3.31 ERA in eight career starts in Philadelphia.

"We're throwing him a lot of breaking balls," manager Mike Redmond told mlb.com. "When you're going good like that, we make a mistake and he hits it. It just seems like the way he's going right now, he's locked in, he's hitting everything."

The right-hander has allowed three runs or less and worked into the seventh inning in four of his last five outings, though he's 1-3 with a 3.15 ERA over that span. Nolasco has received a total of five runs of support in his last six starts, and his 1.12 run-support average in May was the worst in the majors.

Though the Marlins had averaged 8.0 runs and batted .370 during their winning streak, they were held to six hits by Kyle Kendrick on Monday.

Miami might have a tough time regrouping versus Pettibone (3-1, 3.64), who hopes to get back on track following his worst outing of the season.

After allowing three or fewer runs in each of his first seven starts, the right-hander allowed four in the first inning and yielded four walks and six hits over five in a 9-2 loss to Boston on Thursday.

The rookie, though, beat Nolasco in his only start against the Marlins, allowing one run and five hits over 6 1-3 innings in a 4-1 home win May 3. That ended a five-start win streak in Philadelphia for Nolasco, who gave up three homers and four runs and eight hits in six innings.

Brown and Ryan Howard each took Nolasco deep in that contest, and Howard is 4 for 6 with a homer and three doubles against him this season.

Miami rookie Marcell Ozuna, who went 2 for 3 with a double off Pettibone, has batted .352 while hitting safely in 18 of 19 contests.

Chris Coghlan is batting .429 with six extra-base hits and eight RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak.

Philadelphia's Michael Young was available off the bench Monday but did not play after missing five games to tend to his nine-month old son after he was hospitalized.

Justin Grimm was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox, while Ryan Dempster spent two months with the Texas Rangers last season.

Now, it's Grimm who has started to settle in with the Rangers and Dempster still seeking consistency in his first campaign with the Red Sox.

The right-handers will face off Tuesday night as Boston hosts Texas in the opener of a three-game set between first-place teams.

Grimm (5-3, 3.93 ERA) was a 13th-round selection out of high school in 2007 by the Red Sox (35-23), but he didn't sign and opted to play for the University of Georgia for three years before being drafted by Texas (35-21) in 2010.

He pitched five times for Texas last season and was only initially called up this year when Matt Harrison was placed on the disabled list in April. Now, Grimm leads all AL rookies in wins and has victories in his last three starts with a 3.32 ERA.

"He's gotten better as far as confidence-wise, believing and knowing that he belongs here," catcher A.J. Pierzynski said after Grimm gave up two earned runs over six innings to beat Arizona 9-5 on Thursday.

"It's just a progression with young guys. He continues to get better. You can see it in his face. You can see it when he takes the mound in his mannerisms."

Dempster (2-6, 4.45) has been tagged with a loss in four of his last five outings while amassing a 6.41 ERA, though he gave up two runs in seven innings of a 3-1 defeat to Philadelphia last Tuesday.

He was 7-3 with a 5.09 ERA in 12 starts last year for the Rangers, who acquired him from the Cubs prior to the trade deadline.

"He's a great competitor," Texas shortstop Elvis Andrus told the team's official website. "He's going to go out there and try to get you out. He's got great stuff. It's going to be good to face him again."

Trying to back up Grimm will be Jurickson Profar, who provided the go-ahead home run in the eighth inning of Sunday's 3-1 win over Kansas City. The 20-year-old rookie is hitting .324 in 10 games since being called up to fill in for injured second baseman Ian Kinsler.

Both lineups could be bolstered with the returns of everyday players.

Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury sat out last weekend's series against the Yankees with tightness in his left groin, but the team is hopeful he'll be ready to go after Monday's off day.

Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre is 16 for 38 (.421) over his last nine games but missed Sunday's contest with a mild left hamstring strain, an injury he aggravated while running the bases in Saturday's 4-1 loss.

"It might be Wednesday, but Tuesday is realistic," manager Ron Washington told the Rangers' official website. "The thing is, he'll be back in there soon."

Red Sox first baseman Mike Napoli, who is 10 for 24 with eight RBIs over his last seven games, went 1 for 10 with four strikeouts against his former team as Texas swept three home matchups while outscoring Boston 16-4 from May 3-5.

David Ortiz has at least one hit in 14 of his last 15 games against the Rangers, hitting five home runs and driving in 11.

Ortiz and Napoli each homered as Boston took two of three in New York, including a 3-0 victory that was stopped after 5 1/2 innings because of rain Sunday night.

Texas has won 11 of the last 14 overall meetings and 10 of 13 at Fenway Park.

While Jeff Locke has been a pleasant surprise for the Pittsburgh Pirates this season, the Atlanta Braves hoped big things were in store for Mike Minor after he finished strong in 2012.

The two 25-year-old left-handers look to continue their recent success as the Braves try for a fourth consecutive victory Tuesday night against the visiting Braves.

Locke (5-1, 2.25 ERA) went 1-6 with a 6.36 ERA in 10 career starts over the previous two seasons for Pittsburgh (35-23), but is off to a strong start and riding a scoreless stretch of 19 1-3 innings heading into this contest. He's allowed just 13 hits while going 2-0 in his last three outings, scattering seven in 5 1-3 innings of a 1-0, 11-inning win over Detroit on Thursday.

Perhaps Locke's roughest outing of the year came April 18 when he allowed four runs on three homers and walked walks over a season-low 4 2-3 innings of a 6-4 home loss to Atlanta (35-22).

"They hit the ball over the fence,' Locke said after that performance. "The biggest thing for me with this team is when you get ahead of them ... they tend to get themselves out sometimes."

Minor (7-2, 2.48) showed signs of brilliance closing his third season when he went 5-0 with a 2.11 ERA in his final seven starts of 2012. He finished May by going 4-0 with a 1.98 ERA over his last six starts, most recently Thursday when he allowed three runs in the sixth inning and lasted seven of an 11-3 win over Toronto.

He is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two starts, however, versus Pittsburgh.

Minor looks to help the Braves stay hot and build on a 7-2 series-opening victory Monday. Brian McCann, Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman each hit two-run homers as Atlanta won for the 13th time in 17 games.

Freeman is batting .400 (18 for 45) with four homers and 12 RBIs in the last 11 games. He's hitting .378 in nine games against the Pirates at Turner Field.

Heyward, meanwhile, had two hits after going 0 for 18 with eight strikeouts in his previous six games.

"Maybe that will get him going and get him back to the real Jason Heyward that we like,' Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

McCann is batting .226 (7 for 31) in his last nine games, but recorded his 1,000th hit Monday.

"It's a cool moment,' McCann said after he received a standing ovation from the home crowd.

Gaby Sanchez had two hits with an RBI for the Pirates, who have lost three of four after winning 16 of 20. He's batted .375 (3 for 8) with two doubles against Minor.

Star center fielder Andrew McCutchen will return to Pittsburgh's lineup after being given off Monday.

"We gotta be mindful of how much ground he is covering," manager Clint Hurdle told the Pirates' official website. "We've actually hand-picked some days. We picked (Monday) a while ago."

The Cincinnati Reds have been getting some brilliant starting pitching performances since Homer Bailey last took the mound.

The right-hander looks to deliver one of his own when Cincinnati tries to win its seventh straight over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night.

With Jay Bruce hitting a two-run eighth-inning homer and Bronson Arroyo pitching eight innings, the Reds (36-22) posted a 3-0 victory in Monday's series opener. Back from a 2-3 road trip, Cincinnati won for the eighth time in nine tries at Great American Ball Park to improve to a major league-best 21-7 at home.

Colorado had scored seven runs in each of the previous two games - both wins - to move past the Reds with an NL-leading 275 runs.

"That's a tough ballclub to shut out," manager Dusty Baker said.

Reds starters have posted a 0.64 ERA as the team has blanked three of four opponents since Bailey's last outing, a 7-1 loss at Cleveland on Thursday. He surrendered a season high-tying seven runs, all with two outs in the fourth inning, before getting pulled.

Bailey had gone 2-0 with a 1.64 ERA in his previous three outings. He's 2-0 with a 2.32 ERA in his five home starts, with Cincinnati winning each of those contests.

However, Bailey has gone 1-2 with a 5.47 ERA in five starts against Colorado, and his two strong starts versus the Rockies have surprisingly come at hitter-friendly Coors Field. Bailey has gone 0-2 with a 9.69 ERA in three home outings against them.

The Rockies (30-28), losers of five of six in Cincinnati, will send Juan Nicasio (4-2, 4.79) to the mound for his first appearance against the Reds. The right-hander is looking for a better effort after surrendering a season high-tying five runs in five innings of a 7-5 loss to Houston on Thursday.

Nicasio had surrendered two runs in 11 innings in his previous two starts.

Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips has missed the last two games with a left forearm contusion, and he's not expected back during this three-game set. Cesar Izturis, who went 0 for 4 in the opener, or Jack Hannahan will likely get the start Tuesday.

Joey Votto will try to start a new hitting streak against the Rockies after an 0-for-4 effort with two strikeouts Monday ended an eight-game run.

Shortstop Zack Cozart is batting .364 during an eight-game hitting streak. He's hit .391 in his last 11 games to raise his average 40 points to .246.

Colorado's Michael Cuddyer is batting .448 with two home runs and seven RBIs during a seven-game hitting streak.

Teammate Troy Tulowitzki is 5 for 9 off Bailey.

Rookie third baseman Nolan Arenado continued to struggle Monday, going 0 for 4. He's 3 for 24 in his past six games.

"I'm not too concerned about Nolan, because he's going to hit up here," manager Walt Weiss told the team's official website. "With young players, you want to make sure they're OK and not getting too beat up by the game mentally. He's barreled up enough balls in a short time up here to say he can hit up here."

Despite the Rockies' gaudy season run total, they've scored seven times in their last four road games and have gone 1-4 in their last five away from home.

The Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals have both experienced their share of struggles.

But a recent power surge has things looking up for the Twins, while the Royals' offense is still sputtering through a prolonged slump.

Minnesota would like to see both trends continue Tuesday night when it visits Kansas City in the opener of a three-game series.

The Twins (25-29) don't resemble the offense that managed five runs during a three-game sweep at the hands of the Royals from April 8-10. They arrive in Kansas City winners of seven of nine while slugging .449 with 15 homers - including four in Sunday's 10-0 win over Seattle.

This stretch immediately follows a 10-game losing streak - tied for fourth-longest in team history - that saw the Twins average 2.8 runs while slugging only .317.

"Those 10 games we were losing, some games were one-run games and we just needed a big hit," Brian Dozier, who went 3 for 4 with a home run Sunday, told the team's official website.

Dozier has struggled this season and was batting .197 before going 10 for 24 (.417) over his last six games.

"But we've turned this thing around and it's not a streak anymore," he said. "Everything is going good right now and we're clicking."

The Royals (23-31), meanwhile, continued to squander opportunities in a 3-1 loss at Texas on Sunday. They couldn't score a run in the second despite loading the bases with no outs, and also finished the fourth empty-handed after putting runners on second and third.

Kansas City is hitting .221 with runners in scoring position while averaging 2.6 runs during a 3-14 slide. This came after the club started 20-17, and hit .312 with runners in scoring position.

"We were in a position to do some damage," manager Ned Yost said Sunday. "We had our opportunities and it just didn't happen. We have to start picking up some of those opportunities."

Both starting pitchers put together solid outings Wednesday. Minnesota's Samuel Deduno (1-1, 5.11 ERA) held Milwaukee to one run and four hits over seven innings in a 4-1 win, while Luis Mendoza (1-2, 4.63) gave up a run in 5 2-3 innings at St. Louis in a game the Royals would go on to lose 5-3.

Deduno yielded one run in 6 1-3 innings in winning his lone start against the Royals on July 22.

Mendoza is 2-1 with a 2.67 ERA in five games - four starts - against the Twins. Justin Morneau, who is expected to be back in the lineup after missing two straight games because of the stomach flu, is 5 for 8 off the right-hander.

A matchup with the Twins might be just what Billy Butler and Salvador Perez need to help awaken Kansas City's offense. Butler is batting .422 with 11 RBIs during an 11-game hitting streak versus Minnesota, while Perez has at least one hit in 17 of his 19 games against the divisional foe, batting .403. He went 6 for 12 in the first three games this year.

Joe Mauer, who is 7 of 18 in his last five games, is hitting .452 with 31 RBIs in his last 35 contests against Kansas City dating back to 2010.

The Oakland Athletics' improved play outside the Bay Area has helped them reach their high-water mark of the season.

Another game visiting the slumping Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night could further aid their push for the AL West lead.

Since dropping a season-worst five consecutive road games, the A's (35-24) are 8-3 outside Oakland following Monday's 10-2 victory. It was Oakland's fourth consecutive victory as it played in Miller Park for the first time.

The A's starters have a 2.66 ERA while winning 15 of 17 to help lift the team a season-best 11 games above .500 and within 1 1/2 games of division-leading Texas.

A.J. Griffin (5-4, 4.04 ERA) will try to keep the pressure on the Rangers. Oakland had won the right-hander's previous three starts - and six in a row overall - before a 5-2 loss at San Francisco on Thursday when Griffin yielded four runs in 5 2-3 innings.

"It was one of his better outings of the year," catcher Derek Norris told the A's official website.

Griffin, though, could fare better against a Milwaukee team which has lost five straight at home for the third time this year and eight of 10 overall. The Brewers' last six-game skid at Miller Park was Aug. 30-Sept. 10, 2011.

One positive Monday was Rickie Weeks going 2 for 3 with a home run and a triple. The struggling second baseman, batting .192, nearly had a two-homer game before a video review in the seventh overturned the call.

Perhaps the Brewers calling up second baseman Scooter Gennett from Triple-A Nashville on Monday and manager Ron Roenicke mentioning a platoon system got Weeks' attention.

"It was nice to see him swinging it well. Hopefully that continues,' Roenicke said.

Milwaukee (21-35) also made a trade Monday, acquiring third baseman Juan Francisco from Atlanta for minor league pitcher Tom Keeling. Francisco, who hit .241 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 35 games for the Braves, is expected to join the team Tuesday.

Jonathan Lucroy, who had his eight-game hitting streak snapped Monday, will likely be behind the plate as Kyle Lohse (1-6, 4.37) tries to avoid losing a career high-tying sixth consecutive decision.

The veteran right-hander has one of the majors' lowest run-support averages (2.56) - it's 1.85 at home - but he didn't help himself in Thursday's 8-6 loss at Minnesota, permitting a season-worst six runs in a season-low 4 2-3 innings.

Lohse was also tagged for a career-high four homers in his first start since missing a turn due to elbow discomfort.

"Physically, I wasn't having the pain in the elbow where I had it before. I just didn't locate the ball," he told the Brewers' official website. "... A guy like me, I've got to locate, change speeds, and I didn't do a very good job."

Lohse hasn't been very good against Oakland, going 1-3 with a 5.54 ERA in seven starts. The last one was in 2007 while with Cincinnati.

Coco Crisp, who had four of Oakland's season-high 19 hits Monday, including his 10th career leadoff homer, has faced Lohse more than twice as much any other A's player. He's 9 for 35 in that matchup.

Oakland has won four straight over Milwaukee.
