Preview: Diamondbacks (32-24) at Cardinals (37-19)
    Game: 2
    Venue: Busch Stadium
    Date: June 04, 2013 8:15 PM EDT

If the St. Louis Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks remain atop their respective divisions, solid pitching likely will be a major reason.

Each sends a highly regarded young hurler to the mound Tuesday night, with Michael Wacha looking to guide St. Louis to an eighth victory in 10 tries in a matchup with Tyler Skaggs and visiting Arizona.

St. Louis (38-19) has the best record in the major leagues and hasn't lost back-to-back games since a three-game skid April 27-29. Carlos Beltran went 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and Yadier Molina, after appealing a one-game suspension handed down just before the contest, hit a solo homer in the fifth inning of a 7-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Matt Carpenter had three hits and is batting .412 during a career high-tying 12-game hitting streak.

The defeat was the first in three contests for Arizona (32-25). Gerardo Parra, 10 for 20 in four games versus St. Louis this season, had two hits and is batting .407 during a seven-game hitting streak.

Both teams' success to date is due largely to strong pitching. St. Louis has a 2.96 ERA that's tops in baseball, while Arizona ranks seventh with a 3.64 mark.

Skaggs (1-0, 0.00 ERA) contributed to that number in his first start of the season May 27. Called up to start the first game of a doubleheader, he gave up three hits and struck out nine in six scoreless innings of a 5-3 win over Texas.

``I'm happy that they called me up and had the confidence in me," said Skaggs, who went 1-3 with a 5.83 ERA in six starts last season. "Hopefully I opened up a few eyes.'

Though the Diamondbacks initially recalled Randall Delgado to take the roster spot of Brandon McCarthy, who was placed on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation, manager Kirk Gibson opted to give the 21-year-old Skaggs another start.

"He threw all of his pitches. That's what he has to do, and hopefully he'll do that again," Gibson told the team's official website.

The left-hander, Arizona's top prospect according to MLB.com, has not faced the Cardinals, who will start a prized youngster of their own.

Wacha (0-0, 1.29) had impressive major league debut Thursday, allowing one run and two hits while striking out six in seven innings of a 4-2 loss to Kansas City. The bullpen allowed three ninth-inning runs.

"Definitely just one to remember," Wacha said. "Once I threw the first pitch for a strike I really calmed down and was able to execute my pitches pretty well.'

The right-hander will face a Diamondbacks team that has dropped five of six in St. Louis.

Arizona had won three of the previous four meetings overall prior to Monday.

Preview: Blue Jays (24-33) at Giants (30-27)
      Game: 1
      Venue: AT&T Park
      Date: June 04, 2013 10:15 PM EDT

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy presented Melky Cabrera with a World Series ring in last month's visit to Canada.

Cabrera, suspended for drug use last season and now with the Toronto Blue Jays, may not get as favorable a reunion with Bay Area fans when he returns to San Francisco in Tuesday night's opener of a three-game set.

The outfielder was suspended 50 games Aug. 15 for a positive testosterone test. The MVP of last year's All-Star game, he was left off the Giants' postseason roster and took the unprecedented move of disqualifying himself for the NL batting title. San Francisco's Buster Posey took the crown by leading the majors with a .336 average while Cabrera batted .346.

Bochy presented Cabrera with his ring in a private ceremony in the weight room before the start of a series May 14-15. Toronto (24-33) swept the two games from San Francisco (30-27).

The manager may have done that to avoid a scene at home, although Cabrera insists he isn't worried about his reception.

"It's up to the fans, it's nothing I have control of," Cabrera told the Blue Jays' official website. "I'm just going to play the game. If they decide to boo, that's fine. If they decide to cheer, that's fine with me, too. But I'm not going to worry about that. I'm just going to focus on the game and try to help my team win."

There will likely be boos if Cabrera produces like he did in last month's series. He went 5 for 8 with four runs scored and two RBIs.

San Francisco starters allowed 16 runs in that series. Half of them were unearned, as the Giants totaled four errors.

Tim Lincecum (3-5, 5.12 ERA), who was tagged for seven runs in 3 2-3 innings in his lone start versus the Blue Jays in 2007, could be pitching to remain in the rotation Tuesday. Lincecum has posted an 8.27 ERA in losing his last three starts, and Bochy actually had the right-hander available in the bullpen this past weekend in St. Louis.

Cabrera is 1 for 6 against Lincecum.

These teams had Monday off. Toronto, however, is no doubt looking for some length out of starter Josh Johnson (0-1, 6.86) after its bullpen allowed one run in 22 2-3 innings over the weekend as the Blue Jays dropped two of three in San Diego.

Toronto relievers worked nine scoreless innings in Sunday's 7-4, 11-inning victory.

"We're proud of it, but then again, we're only as good as our next one,' reliever Steve Delabar said.

Johnson will make his first start since April 21 after being out due to right triceps inflammation. He has worked on a revamped changeup during his rehab.

"Hopefully, I can get it to that level where it can be a huge pitch for me," said Johnson, seeking his first win in eight starts.

The right-hander is 0-3 with a 3.46 ERA in six outings against the Giants. Hunter Pence (5 for 11 with two homers) and Andres Torres (5 for 8 with a homer and three doubles) have fared well against him.

The same can be said of Angel Pagan, who is 6 for 17 against Johnson and may return Tuesday after missing eight games with a sore left hamstring.

Brandon Belt, who went 3 for 6 with a homer last month in Toronto, broke a tie with a two-run pinch-hit double in the seventh in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Cardinals. That was just the second win in seven games for San Francisco.

Preview: Padres (26-31) at Dodgers (24-32)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Dodger Stadium
        Date: June 04, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

Adrian Gonzalez doesn't appear to be slowing down, and the Los Angeles Dodgers could also be adding a second high-profile hitter in as many days to the lineup Tuesday night.

The red-hot Gonzalez could be joined by Hanley Ramirez in his return as the Dodgers host the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.

Behind home runs from Gonzalez and Scott Van Slyke, Los Angeles (24-32) opened a 10-game homestand with a 2-1 victory over the Padres (26-31) on Monday. The Dodgers have gone 7-10 in their last 17, but they've won eight of 11 in Los Angeles.

Highly regarded Yasiel Puig had two hits and made a strong throw from right field to first base to complete a game-ending double play in his major league debut. The 22-year-old Cuban defector is helping fill in for outfielders Matt Kemp and Carl Crawford, who are dealing with hamstring injuries.t

"He's an energetic guy, eager to get on the field, loves the game and always has a smile on his face,' Gonzalez said. "We all know he's got a great arm.'

Gonzalez went 1 for 3 with a home run Monday and is batting .429 with four homers and 12 RBIs in his last 10 games.

After Puig provided a spark Monday, Los Angeles could get Ramirez back for this game after he missed the past 28 with a hamstring injury. The third baseman has played in only four games, going 5 for 11 with a homer.

It might be perfect timing considering he's 9 for 10 against San Diego's Clayton Richard (1-5, 7.86 ERA).

Gonzalez has also dominated the left-hander, going 8 for 10.

Richard had posted an 11.12 ERA over his previous four starts before finally earning a victory with two scoreless innings of relief in a 4-3, 17-inning win over Toronto on Friday.

"That's the crazy thing about baseball. You never really know what you're going to get," Richard said.

Richard had one of his best starts of the season against the Dodgers on April 9, allowing two runs over five innings of a 9-3 home win.

He'll try to help the Padres, losers of two in a row after winning four of five, get back on track as they face Ted Lilly (0-2, 4.26).

The left-hander has allowed four earned runs over 11 innings in two outings since replacing Josh Beckett (groin) in the rotation.

Lilly has gone 5-1 with a 1.25 ERA in his last six starts against the Padres, and he's yielded one unearned run in 13 1-3 innings over the past two matchups.

San Diego's Nick Hundley (2 for 20), Will Venable (1 for 9) and Chris Denorfia (2 for 12) have struggled against Lilly.

Everth Cabrera went 2 for 3 in the series opener and is 8 for 18 with four stolen bases over his last four games.

Carlos Quentin may be able to return after injuring his right shoulder running into the wall Sunday.

Preview: Orioles (32-25) at Astros (21-37)
          Game: 1
          Venue: Minute Maid Park
          Date: June 04, 2013 8:10 PM EDT

The Houston Astros sure aren't playing like the team with the worst record in the AL.

Back home after a perfect road trip, Houston will try to extend its winning streak to seven when it faces the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night.

The Astros (21-37) have a ways to go before they can start thinking about reaching the .500 mark, but Houston has the longest current winning streak in baseball. The club capped a 6-0 trip and finished its first four-game sweep as a member of the AL with a 2-1 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday.

          It's the Astros' longest run since a seven-game streak July 27-Aug. 3, 2010.

"It was just a matter of time," manager Bo Porter said. "... you're starting to see we're coming together."

Houston is playing well in close games, winning four times on the trip by two or fewer runs.

Its starters have played a big part, posting a 2.28 ERA during the club's 7-1 stretch. Lucas Harrell (4-6, 5.37 ERA) will try to keep that run of excellent pitching going Tuesday when he faces an Orioles team that's won nine of 13.

The right-hander had gone 0-4 with a 7.53 ERA in six May starts before giving up four runs - three earned - in 5 2-3 innings in a 7-5 victory over Colorado on Thursday. Harrell's outing was made more impressive by the fact that he worked around the Astros' season-high four errors.

He'll face a challenge in first baseman Chris Davis, who hit his major league-leading 20th home run in a 4-2 win over Detroit on Sunday that helped the Orioles (32-25) take two of three from the AL Central leader.

"I think we can compete with anybody," Davis told the Orioles' official website.

Davis is a big reason why the Orioles lead the majors with 81 homers and are second with a .275 batting average. His .357 average and 52 RBIs are second to the totals of Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera.

"Just the consistent approach every day has helped me out, the routine," said Davis, the AL player of the week. "I heard for such a long time that routine was such a big part of this game. I've really found one that I like and I've continued to do that.'

Davis, though, has gone 3 for 23 in seven games against the Astros, all while with Texas.

Baltimore's Chris Tillman (4-2, 4.26) will also have to contend with a dangerous power hitter in Chris Carter, who has 12 home runs after leading the Astros with three and seven RBIs on the trip. Tillman has given up 11 homers in his last five appearances after yielding a career-high four in a 9-6 victory over Washington on Wednesday.

The right-hander, who allowed six runs in 4 2-3 innings, has never faced Houston.

The Orioles go for a seventh consecutive victory in this series following a sweep in their last meeting June 17-19, 2008.

Baltimore dropped all three games in its only series in Houston from June 3-5, 2003.

Preview: Cubs (23-32) at Angels (25-33)
            Game: 1
            Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
            Date: June 04, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum believes the Los Angeles Angels are a dangerous club despite their sub-.500 record.

It may be about time the Angels begin proving him right before it's too late.

Jered Weaver faces the visiting Cubs on Tuesday night when he looks to help get Los Angeles back on track after suffering an embarrassing sweep.

The Angels (25-33) are one of baseball's biggest disappointments due to lofty expectations that came with the aggressive signing of free agents to high-priced deals the past two offseasons.

They may have hit their lowest point after being swept in a four-game series at home by last-place Houston, which has picked up seven of its AL-worst 21 victories over the Angels.

Los Angeles scored eight runs the entire set after falling 2-1 on Monday, continuing to founder despite a lineup featuring sluggers Mike Trout, Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Josh Hamilton.

Sveum isn't counting the Angels out just yet, though.

"We know they're capable of being a prolific offense," Sveum told the team's official website. "They have guys with some track records of some powerful stuff. You know they're going to do their thing. They have some guys with special ability with the bat."

Weaver (1-1, 3.71 ERA) looks to turn in a solid effort on the mound Tuesday as he makes his second start since returning from a fractured left elbow. He allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings of Wednesday's 4-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

``It's been a long road and a lot of frustrating times,' Weaver said. ``I got to give it up to the training staff for dealing with me for six weeks. When you haven't been out there in a while, you ask yourself, `Can I still do this?''

Weaver seemingly has a good opportunity to keep rolling against another NL team Tuesday. He hasn't lost an interleague start since falling to the Dodgers on June 20, 2009, going 8-0 with a 1.94 ERA over his last 12 outings.

One of those victories came June 19, 2010, when he scattered two hits over seven innings to beat the Cubs 12-0 at Wrigley Field.

Chicago (23-32) had Monday off as it prepares for this short two-game series. It has another day off Thursday before beginning a seven-game homestand.

"We know the history of the West Coast is no fun," Sveum said. "It's hard to win out there. In our case, we're going out there a couple different times and this one is only for two days. You're putting a lot of miles on."

The Cubs are coming off back-to-back home losses to Arizona - 12-4 on Saturday and 8-4 on Sunday - that followed a five-game winning streak, and Feldman (5-4, 2.82) will look to help get them back on track.

Feldman spent the last eight seasons with Texas but still hasn't faced the Angels since 2010. He's 4-5 with a 5.90 ERA in 11 career starts against them, opposing Weaver three times.

The right-hander has been solid in his first season with the Cubs, allowing two or fewer earned runs in eight of his 10 starts. He allowed two runs and struck out seven in six innings of Wednesday's 9-3 win over the Chicago White Sox.

The Cubs and Angels have split six all-time meetings.

Preview: White Sox (24-31) at Mariners (25-33)
              Game: 2
              Venue: Safeco Field
              Date: June 04, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

After bouncing back from a brief rough stretch, Seattle's Felix Hernandez can focus on extending his home dominance over the Chicago White Sox.

Jake Peavy, meanwhile, hopes to remain successful against the Mariners and help the White Sox avoid an eighth consecutive defeat Tuesday night.

Hernandez (6-4, 2.38 ERA) allowed 11 runs and 19 hits over 10 2-3 innings to lose two in a row before he gave up one run and three hits in eight innings of a 7-1 win at San Diego on Thursday.

"He stayed in his delivery better," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "Executed pitches, good stuff. Controlled the ballgame, which is what we want guys to do.'

Though the star right-hander allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings to drop to 0-2 with a 6.50 ERA in his last three starts - all on the road - versus Chicago (24-31), he's 2-0 with a 2.17 ERA in five against the White Sox at Safeco Field. Hernandez has not faced them there since 2011, but he's yielded two runs and 13 hits and struck out 24 while going 1-0 in the last three home outings.

The Mariners ace might be the last person Chicago wants to see on the mound as it tries to avoid the club's first-eight game skid since Sept. 14-21, 2010. After their eight-game winning streak at Seattle (25-33) ended with Monday's 4-2 loss, the White Sox are batting .192 while being outscored 37-11 in the last seven contests.

Chicago also will try to avoid its first nine-game road slide since May 30-June 22, 2008.

"It's been tough, but we hope to turn it around," said second baseman Gordon Beckham, who went 0 for 3 on Monday in his first game since he injured his wrist April 9.

Chicago's Adam Dunn drove in a run with a hit in his fourth straight game Monday, but is batting .133 (6 for 45) with 21 strikeouts in his last 13 contests.

Peavy (6-3, 3.62), though, is 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA in nine starts versus Seattle. He's allowed two runs and fanned 23 over 21 innings to win all three career starts at Safeco Field.

However, the right-hander has yielded 10 runs in 10 innings to lose his last two road outings. He allowed six and eight hits in four innings of an 8-3 loss to the Cubs on Thursday.

"I felt good,' said Peavy, who served up a grand slam to Cubs pitcher Travis Wood. "There was no excuse of it whatsoever.'

A lifetime .313 hitter with two doubles and a home run off Peavy, Raul Ibanez delivered a two-run homer Monday to help Seattle improve to 5-4 since a season-high eight-game losing streak.

"First and foremost, it's nice to get a win to start off a series,' winning pitcher Joe Saunders said. "We've been kind of struggling of late.'

Teammate Kendrys Morales had an RBI double, and is batting .400 (24 for 60) with 15 RBIs in his last 14 games. He's hit .425 with nine RBIs in his last 11 against the White Sox.

Hot & Not - AL Edition

                              June 4, 2013

We are now into June, and there are a few teams that are going to be thrilled to see May leave and a few that are going to be devastated to see it gone. Check out the teams in the American League that have been the best and the worst to your bankrolls of late on the MLB betting lines.

                              Money-Makers

Oakland Athletics (15-2, +$1,432 in L/17) – The argument could be made that this is one of the most unlikely runs that we have seen in the majors this year. Oakland has rolled off wins in 15 of its last 17 games, and it is now right there with the Texas Rangers for the best record in the AL West, something that seemed unfathomable just a few weeks ago.

On Deck: There haven't been a lot of tough road games of late for the A's, and these next six on the road aren't all that difficult either. Trips to the slumping Brewers and White Sox are on deck, and there isn't a truly threatening series coming until the trip to Arlington on June 17.

Houston Astros (6-0, +$1,231 in L/6) – If you bet a single dollar on the Astros and parlayed that single dollar and the winnings from each of the last five games together, you'd have nearly $800 right now in your pocket. The oddsmakers are essentially insinuating that the odds on Houston winning six straight games on the road are nearly 800/1, but that's exactly what has happened over the course of the last week for one of the worst teams in baseball.

On Deck: Inevitably, the losing is going to start again, and when it does, it is going to probably hurt. Houston has Baltimore and Kansas City on tap, and we would be shocked to see the team go better than 2-4 in those games.

Minnesota Twins (7-2, +$670 in L/9) – Give props to Manager Rod Gardenhire for getting his Twins back on track. It was only two weeks ago that this was one of the coldest teams in the game, but after winning seven out of nine, the Twinkies are in third place in the AL Central and only 4 1/2-games out of the division lead.

On Deck: The problem for the Twins is that they haven't played well on the road all year long, and that will probably continue this week on road trips to Kansas City and Washington.

                              Money-Burners

Los Angeles Angels (0-4, -$885 in L/4) – It's not that losing four straight games is that devastating of a losing streak, but to lose four straight games at home against the ASTROS of all teams? This really should be the end of the road for Manager Mike Scioscia, knowing that his team only scored a total of eight runs in four games against the most embarrassing pitching staff in the game.

On Deck: It can't get much easier than it just was, so every game looks losable right now. The team has two from the visiting Cubbies before heading East for games against the Red Sox and Orioles into the middle of next week.

Chicago White Sox (0-7, -$737 in L/7) – It was only a week ago that this was a .500 club, but all of a sudden, the White Sox aren't hitting the baseball anymore, and with it has come a ton of losses. The Pale Hose have been shut out three times during this seven-game skid.

On Deck: The Mariners and the Athletics have already held Chicago to just a total of five runs in its last four games combined, and after finishing this series with the M's on Tuesday and Wednesday, its home for another series with Oakland for four games this weekend.

New York Yankees (2-7, -$720 in L/9) – The sign is there that the Yankees are going to get out of their offensive woes at some point now that 1B Mark Teixeira and 3B Kevin Youkilis are back in the lineup. However, losing four games in a row to the hated Mets isn't going to make the Steinbrenner boys all that happy. Neither did losing two out of three to the Red Sox over the weekend.

On Deck: This series with Cleveland is surprisingly huge at this point in the season. After this one is over with, the Bronx Bombers are headed out West for a long 10-game roadie with stops in Seattle, Oakland, and LA.
