Preview: Reds (34-21) at Pirates (34-21)
    Game: 2
    Venue: PNC Park
    Date: June 01, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

There wasn't much for the Pittsburgh Pirates to celebrate in their 1,000th game at PNC Park, but they still finished their best month in 21 seasons.

Francisco Liriano will try to get the Pirates off to a good start in June when their series with the Cincinnati Reds continues Saturday night.

After winning six straight and 10 of 11 at home, Pittsburgh (34-21) fell 6-0 on Friday for its fifth loss in 21 games overall.

The Pirates had one hit, a fifth-inning single by Brandon Inge, for their fewest since Cincinnati's Homer Bailey threw a no-hitter and won 1-0 at PNC on Sept. 27.

"Luckily Brandon saved us all with a half-swing base hit," second baseman Neil Walker said. "Maybe we should all have half-swinged tonight. Nothing else really worked for us."

Still, the Pirates finished May with a 19-9 mark for their best month since going 21-8 in September 1992, the last year they made the postseason.

The Pirates are tied with the Reds (34-21) for second in the NL Central behind St. Louis, giving the division three teams with winning percentages of .600 or better through May 31. It's the first time that's happened since Boston, New York and Baltimore were over .600 heading into June in 1986.

Pittsburgh will try to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time since May 8-9 with Liriano (3-1, 2.35 ERA) looking to rebound from his worst outing of the season.

The left-hander surrendered four runs and eight hits in five innings of Monday's 6-5 loss at Detroit. Liriano had a 1.00 ERA in his first three starts.

"I know that I've got to hit my spots and make good pitches if I don't want to get beaten up," he said.

Liriano has never faced the Reds or second baseman Brandon Phillips, who's batting .448 (13 for 29) with four homers and nine RBIs in a seven-game hitting streak against Pittsburgh.

Phillips went 2 for 4 with a solo homer and Jay Bruce also homered Friday to help Cincinnati avoid a third consecutive loss and win for the first time in four tries at Pittsburgh this season.

Mike Leake (4-2, 3.02) will try to build on Johnny Cueto's brilliant eight-inning performance when he gets the ball Saturday. He's 2-0 with a 0.43 ERA in his last three outings after striking out a season high-tying seven with no walks while not receiving a decision in Monday's 4-2 win over Cleveland.

"He's been lights out lately," shortstop Zack Cozart told the Reds' official website of the right-hander, who allowed one earned run in 7 1-3 innings. "He's pounding the zone, and I think when you do that, you keep your defense in the game and you get ahead of guys. And when you get ahead of guys, it's proven that you're successful, and I think that's what he's doing."

This will be Leake's second start against the Pirates in 2013. He didn't factor in the decision after allowing season highs of five runs and 10 hits in a 6-5 loss at Pittsburgh on April 12.

Walker had two hits off Leake that night to improve to 9 for 23 (.391) in their matchups.

Left fielder Alex Presley, 6 for 15 with two homers, a triple and a double against Leake, could get the start after getting called up from Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday.

Pittsburgh is 488-512 at PNC since it opened with an 8-2 loss to the Reds on April 9, 2001.

Preview: Giants (29-25) at Cardinals (35-18)
      Game: 2
      Venue: Busch Stadium
      Date: June 01, 2013 7:15 PM EDT

The San Francisco Giants hope their latest victory will provide some much-needed momentum as they begin a difficult stretch of games.

Returning to the place where they began their undefeated run to the 2012 World Series title, the Giants face the St. Louis Cardinals in a day-night doubleheader Saturday after the series opener was postponed because of rain.

San Francisco (29-25) has lost 10 of 16 but hopes to build on Thursday's 5-2 win over Oakland that prevented a season series sweep at the hands of its Bay Area rival.

"If this game got away from us, it would have been a long flight to St. Louis, believe me," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I thought (Thursday) was really critical."

Pablo Sandoval delivered a go-ahead two-run single to highlight a four-run sixth inning for the Giants, who remain confident despite their recent struggles.

"We've been losing some games but the attitude's been good. That's one thing we never lose," center fielder Angel Pagan told the Giants' official website. "We play with a lot of perseverance and determination to go out there and try to get everything better and play hard and believe that things will change."

Perhaps a return to Busch Stadium will help San Francisco start to string together wins again.

The Giants trailed the Cardinals 3-1 in last year's NL championship series but ran off seven straight victories to win the World Series, starting with a 5-0 win at Busch in Game 5.

St. Louis (35-18), however, owns the best record in the majors and outscored the Giants 20-7 while taking two of three at San Francisco in early April. This series begins a stretch of 12 of 14 on the road for the Giants, featuring games against the NL's top teams in the Cardinals, Arizona, Pittsburgh and Atlanta. San Francisco also hosts Toronto for two games during that span.

"We have to be on top of our game," Bochy said.

Game 1 starter Matt Cain (4-2, 5.00 ERA) has gone 4-0 with a 3.48 ERA in five starts this month for San Francisco, allowing four runs and six hits in 12 innings to go 1-0 in his last two. He gave up two runs and walked five in five innings of a 7-3 win over Colorado on Sunday.

However, the right-hander is 0-3 with a 7.04 ERA in four starts at St. Louis, including postseason. He allowed nine runs over 3 2-3 innings of a 14-3 home loss to the Cardinals on April 7.

Matt Carpenter is 7 for 9 with a home run against Cain, and has batted .395 during an overall nine-game hitting streak.

Carpenter went 2 for 4 in Thursday's 4-2 loss to Kansas City that ended after 3 a.m. Central Time due to an hour rain delay to start and one of 4 hours, 32 minutes in the ninth inning. The Cardinals led 2-1 heading into the ninth, but fell to 20-7 in May.

Shelby Miller (5-3, 2.02) will oppose Cain looking to end his recent struggles. After allowing one run and striking out 24 in 20 2-3 innings while going 2-0 in his first three May starts, he's given up six runs in 11 innings to go 0-1 in the last two.

The right-hander allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings of a 5-3 win at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

"I don't think my fastball was as good as it had been earlier on (in the season)," Miller told the Cardinals' official website. "I feel just a little off, but not much. Hopefully I can get that taken care of."

He allowed two runs and walked four in 5 1-3 innings of a 6-3 win at San Francisco on April 6.

Adam Wainwright (7-3, 2.48) will start the nightcap for St. Louis. The right-hander has won back-to-back starts, giving up one run in 7 1-3 innings of a 10-2 victory over San Diego on May 21 before allowing three runs in eight innings of a 6-3 win at Kansas City on Monday.

"I think as a pitcher, no matter what happens on the other side, you just have to keep battling and eventually if you keep making pitches things will work out," Wainwright said.

He has tossed at least seven innings in eight of his 11 starts, including when he allowed two runs in seven innings to beat San Francisco on April 7.

Wainwright has gone that same distance while posting a 1.71 ERA during a three-start winning streak against the Giants, which includes an 8-3 victory in Game 4 of the NLCS.

He'll be opposed by Madison Bumgarner (4-3, 3.13), who went 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA over six starts in April but is 1-3 with a 5.17 ERA in five starts since. He allowed four runs and walked a career worst-tying five in 6 2-3 innings of Monday's 4-1 loss to Oakland.

Bochy still was impressed with the outing.

"That's the kind of pitching we're going to need," Bochy said. "It doesn't go down as a quality start, but he left the game with a really good start and that's what we're going to need playing these good clubs. He did all he could."

The left-hander has a 6.88 ERA while losing three straight starts against the Cardinals. He gave up six runs and eight hits - including two-run homers to Carlos Beltran and David Freese - over 3 2-3 innings of a 6-4 loss in Game 1 of the NLCS the last time he faced them.

Beltran's two hits in six at_bats off Bumgarner are homers, while Freese went deep on two of his three hits in seven at_bats against him.

Bochy announced prior to Friday's rainout that Sandoval would likely miss this series and possibly a full week because of a strain in his right foot.

Preview: Astros (18-37) at Angels (25-30)
        Game: 2
        Venue: Angel Stadium of Anaheim
        Date: June 01, 2013 10:05 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Angels appeared to be putting it all together during a recent tear, but they may have a tough series on their hands against the Houston Astros.

The Angels will try to get back on track after having their home winning streak snapped, while the suddenly hot Astros seek their longest run in more than a year Saturday night.

Carlos Pena had three hits and Jason Castro added his seventh home run to help Houston (18-37) stop Los Angeles' season-best six-game home win streak with a 6-3 victory. The Angels had won 10 of 12 overall.

The Astros, who won their third straight, haven't taken four in a row since May 21-25, 2012.

"We're just trying to ride this out,' center fielder Brandon Barnes said. "We're going out there and playing hard-nosed baseball.'

Los Angeles has scored 10 runs in its past four games after averaging 7.3 in the previous nine. It will now face a Houston team that's posted a 2.63 ERA in winning four of five.

Bud Norris (4-4, 3.71 ERA) will try to keep the Angels' bats quiet again while beating Los Angeles for the third time in as many matchups this season. Norris has held the Angels to one run in 15-plus innings in the two games.

Since allowing a season-high seven runs over five innings of a 7-2 loss at Detroit on May 13, Norris has given up two runs over 13 innings in his last two starts.

He worked his way out of several jams Monday, giving up two runs over seven innings of a 3-2, 12-inning win over Colorado on Monday.

"He was absolutely fantastic,' manager Bo Porter said. "He kept his composure and just made quality pitch after quality pitch.'

Josh Hamilton homered off Norris in the right-hander's last start against the Angels, a 3-1 victory May 8.

Hamilton went 1 for 4 on Friday after missing two of the previous three games with back spasms. He's batted .345 with 12 homers and 32 RBIs in 39 career games against the Astros.

Albert Pujols, who has been battling chronic foot and knee problems, is expected back in the lineup after getting the night off in the opener. He's 7 for 31 (.226) with no homers against Norris.

Erick Aybar provided one of the few Angels highlights Friday, going 2 for 4 with his first home run. He's 9 for 26 in his past six games.

Jerome Williams (4-1, 2.58) has given Los Angeles' rotation a boost, going 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA over his last four starts. He'll try to cool off a Houston team that's totaled 19 runs in its past three games.

Castro has been on a tear, going 14 for 26 with three home runs and six RBIs in his last eight contests.

Chris Carter, who had an RBI single Friday, is 8 for 21 with three homers and eight RBIs against the Angels this season.

Preview: Blue Jays (23-32) at Padres (25-29)
          Game: 2
          Venue: PETCO Park
          Date: June 01, 2013 10:10 PM EDT

The San Diego Padres seem to be benefiting from interleague play.

They're also finding success in extra innings.

A day after needing 17 innings to get their latest victory over an AL foe, the Padres will try to make things easier on themselves when they face the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night.

San Diego (25-29) has won five of seven in interleague play after being swept in a three-game series at Tampa Bay from May 10-12.

The Padres are also 3-1 in extra innings, winning two of their last three when playing beyond the ninth.

Jesus Guzman delivered the decisive blow Friday, singling in Jedd Gyorko with two outs in the 17th to clinch a 4-3 victory in the opener of this three-game set.

The hit made Guzman 2 for 22 over his last 12 games.

Gyorko has been much more consistent, particularly at home and during interleague play. The rookie second baseman is batting .347 at pitcher-friendly Petco Park compared to .198 on the road.

He's also 10 for 25 (.400) with one homer, four RBIs and six runs in his last six contests against AL opponents.

With originally scheduled starter Clayton Richard getting the win in relief Friday, the Padres will recall Robbie Erlin from Triple-A Tucson to make his first career start.

"We talked about it, whether to use a position player or go to one of our starters, and we felt that was the thing to do," manager Bud Black said. "We wanted to win the game."

That leaves Black relying on Erlin, whose only experience in the majors is allowing two runs in two innings over two relief outings before returning to the minors May 2.

The 22-year-old left-hander is 4-0 with a 3.79 ERA in eight games - all starts - for Tucson, but he's pitched past the fifth inning just once. That could be an issue since the Padres used eight pitchers Friday.

Toronto (23-32), which has dropped four of five on the road, is in the same position after going to the bullpen seven times in the opener. However, the Blue Jays are scheduled to turn to Mark Buehrle (2-3, 5.51 ERA), who is second among active pitchers with 2,746 innings pitched and fifth with 28 complete games.

He's completed at least six innings in each of his last six starts.

The veteran left-hander did that again Monday, allowing one run with six strikeouts in six innings of a 9-3 win over Atlanta. He had been 0-3 with a 5.40 ERA over his previous seven outings.

"Everything's been down in the zone, so when you're down in the zone pretty much the only thing they can do with it is hit it down," Buehrle told the team's official website. "It's always good when I'm getting ground balls instead of fly balls - I'll take fly-ball outs - but when they're hitting the ball on the ground, that's kind of my game."

Buehrle is 1-0 with a 0.54 ERA in two career starts versus the Padres. He was superb at Petco on May 2, 2012, tossing a five-hitter in a 4-1 win with Miami.

It's unclear if he'll have to face Yonder Alonso, who suffered a right hand contusion after being hit by a pitch from Aaron Loup in the seventh inning Friday. The first baseman has at least one hit in 16 of the past 19 games, compiling a .313 average.

            Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Figures the Mets sweep Bronx four games then go to Miami and lose to the God-awful Marlins. Jacob Turner pitched well in his 2013 debut.

-- You want to speed up baseball? Prohibit coaches/managers from visiting the mound, that would shorten the game by a few minutes every night.

-- Bartolo Colon is first 40+-year old pitcher to toss a CG shutout since 2007, when Curt Schilling threw one. A's beat Chicago 3-0.

-- Stephen Strasburg strained an oblique muscle in Washington's 3-2 win at Atlanta; thats usually good for a stint on the DL.

-- Jays-Padres game went so long San Diego wound up using their starter for Saturday, Clayton Richard, in relief in 16th inning. Padres won the game 4-3 in the 17th inning, on a Jesus Guzman single.

-- Rays-Indians had a 2:39 rain delay in second inning after starting couple hours late; it started in May but ended in June, with Rays winning 9-2, a game that ended at 2:53am.

            *****

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

            13) Royal-Cardinal game Thursday had a 4:36 rain delay (that’s 4 hours, 36 minutes); it resumed at 4:04am ET (even I was asleep) and the umps who did the game (Joe West’s crew) had the Arizona-Cub game in Wrigley ten hours later. Chicago is 300 miles from St Louis; you do the math.

Had the umps called the game early, the Royals would’ve lost, but they got a 4-2 comeback win in George Brett’s first game as hitting coach.

            12) Kid who won the spelling bee on ESPN gets a $30,000 scholarship; he says he’s going to study physics all summer.

Vernon Wells makes $148,148,15 a game, and he isn’t even any good.

            11) Good luck winning Games 6-7, Indiana. Last time the Miami Heat lost consecutive games: January 8-10.

            10) Heat is now 9-0 vs spread in game following its last nine losses, with three of those wins in the playoffs.

            9) Ownership change in Sacramento also means new coach/GM; wonder if that helps Jimmer Fredette’s chances of getting more playing time?

New coach is from Golden State, where they’ve generally tried to play fast, so that could help Jimmer, who is from Glens Falls, 45 miles north of Armadillo World HQ.

            8) Memphis Tigers will have seven new players this winter, including three of the top 37 on ESPN.com’s top 100 list; there hasn’t been official word yet, but rumors are the first AAC basketball tournament could be in downtown Memphis. Its going to be a good league, for sure.

            7) Rutgers hoop coach Eddie Jordan has already signed six new players, and he’s only been on the job since April 23; couple of those kids are in the Class of 2014, but the former NBA coach has hit the ground running, recruiting-wise.

            6) Detroit Tigers lost all three games Tuesday-Thursday, despite giving up a total of seven runs; they’re first team since 1958 to lose two extra-inning games by a 1-0 score in a 3-day span.

            5) Former UTEP/Nebraska hoop coach Doc Sadler (149-107 career record) has been hired as an assistant at Iowa State, after being Director of Ops at Kansas LY; Fred Hoiberg lost an assistant to Washington, so he hired Sadler to take his place.

            4) Pete Rose still earns over $1M a year signing autographs in Las Vegas; last time I saw him out there, in the Forum Shops at Caeser’s Palace, it was $69.99 a pop, but that was a couple years ago.

            3) An Australian golf pro named Andrew Dodt, ranked #561 in the world, had two aces four holes apart on the European Tour this week, but still trails the leader by 11 strokes.

            2) How different teams think: Buffalo Bills drafted Florida State QB EJ Manuel with the #18 pick in the first round; Dallas Cowboys gave Manuel a 4th-round grade. Curious to see the young man play.

            1) Just this week, Jerry West turned 75, Gale Sayers and Joe Namath turned 70. Not sure about me, but my childhood sure is getting old in a hurry.

Preview: Rays (30-25) at Indians (30-25)
                            Game: 3
                            Venue: Progressive Field
                            Date: June 02, 2013 1:05 PM EDT

Jeremy Hellickson is already struggling for the Tampa Bay Rays as he heads into a month that is historically bad for him.

The Rays starter somehow was unbeaten despite a poor May and will take the ball in Sunday's season series finale against the Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.

Hellickson (2-2, 5.61 ERA) posted a 6.69 ERA in May that was baseball's sixth-worst mark. He won his lone decision in six outings last month, becoming the sixth pitcher in big-league history with an ERA that high in at least six starts to still go unbeaten in a month.

It doesn't bode well for the right-hander that he is 1-7 in nine career starts in June with a 4.56 ERA - his worst in any month. He gave up five runs over 5 1-3 innings Tuesday against baseball's lowest scoring team and did not receive a decision in a 7-6 win over Miami.

One problem for Hellickson this season is that he is stranding only 62.1 percent of baserunners for one of baseball's lowest marks. He stranded 82.7 percent of runners in 2012 to lead the majors.

Hellickson is 1-1 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts against the Indians. Numerous Cleveland hitters have poor numbers against him, including Mark Reynolds (3 for 18), Nick Swisher (2 for 11), Mike Aviles (2 for 10) and Carlos Santana (0 for 7).

The Indians are also starting a right-hander in Zach McAllister (4-4, 3.08), who has yet to allow more than three earned runs in any outing. Cleveland had won five straight of his starts before he gave up three runs and a season-high 10 hits over 5 1-3 innings in Tuesday's 8-2 defeat at Cincinnati.

McAllister is 1-1 with a 1.53 ERA in three outings against Tampa Bay, yielding four runs - two earned - over six innings April 5 in a 4-0 road loss to the Rays.

These teams have identical 30-25 records after splitting the first two of this three-game set, with Tampa Bay holding a 3-2 lead in the season series.

Indians manager Terry Francona has rotated his designated hitter throughout the season, with Santana and Reynolds getting the most of the starts there. Reynolds was out of Saturday's lineup in favor of Jason Giambi, and the move paid off as the 42-year-old Giambi hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBIs in a 5-0 victory that snapped the Rays' six-game win streak.

"I'm delirious right now,' said Giambi, who has homered in his last three games. "I feel like Pinocchio with no strings. My last two at_bats I thought about bunting because of the bat speed that I have, but then I said, I have to run. I was done.'

James Loney went 0 for 3 for Tampa Bay after homering three times over his previous two games, including two in Friday's 9-2 victory that ended at 2:53 a.m. due to rain.

"It was a tough day to come back and play this game," manager Joe Maddon said Saturday. "We'll get a good night's sleep and come back and do well tomorrow."

Tampa Bay has won seven of 11 at Cleveland since losing 18 straight there from Sept. 29, 2005-July 23, 2010.

Preview: Mets (22-31) at Marlins (15-41)
                              Game: 3
                              Venue: Marlins Park
                              Date: June 02, 2013 1:10 PM EDT

One-third of the Miami Marlins' victories have come against the New York Mets.

The Marlins are in position for their first sweep of the season, but they'll be up against Matt Harvey in Sunday's series finale in Miami.

Miami (15-41) is 5-3 against New York (22-31) and 10-38 against everyone else after winning 8-1 on Saturday. Marlins starter Jose Fernandez threw seven scoreless innings to match the effort the night before by Jacob Turner in a 5-1 victory.

The starter in the spotlight Sunday, however, will be Harvey (5-0, 1.85 ERA). He's one of three NL pitchers with at least 10 starts that is still undefeated, joining Arizona's Patrick Corbin and Cincinnati's Mat Latos - who also both pitch Sunday.

Harvey leads the majors in opponent batting average (.172) and WHIP (0.82) and owns five career starts in which he has struck out at least 10. He's the first Mets pitcher with that many such outings in his first 21 major league starts since Dwight Gooden recorded eight such starts in 1984.

This will be the hard-throwing right-hander's second look at a Miami team averaging a major league-low 2.9 runs. Harvey lasted a season-low 5 1-3 innings and allowed one run with seven strikeouts in a 4-3, 15-inning road loss April 29.

He's won one of his last seven starts, yielding one run over eight innings with 10 strikeouts and not receiving a decision in Tuesday's 2-1 home victory over the Yankees.

"Matt Harvey, what can you say? He's been in every game he's pitched and if we scored him some runs he'd be 9-0," manager Terry Collins said.

The Mets were riding high entering this series after sweeping four games from their Subway Series rivals while the lowly Marlins had dropped a season-high nine straight entering this weekend.

New York, though, has totaled 12 hits and two walks with 15 strikeouts in the first two games.

David Wright is 0 for 8, John Buck is 1 for 7 with four strikeouts and Daniel Murphy is 2 for 8. That trio has combined for one RBI in this series after combining for 15 in the first six meetings between these NL East rivals.

The Mets have had problems with rookie Marcell Ozuna, who is 6 for 14 against them with a three-hit effort Friday. Chris Coghlan was Saturday's hitting star with three hits and two RBIs.

The Marlins are trying for their second three-game win streak and first since April 28-30 when two of the wins came over the Mets.

Miami will try to break a four-game skid in starts by Kevin Slowey (1-5, 3.59), who is 0-3 with an 8.00 ERA in that span. He gave up four runs over 5 1-3 innings on Tuesday, failed to hold onto a two-run lead and did not get a decision in a 7-6 defeat to Tampa Bay.

"You're disappointed anytime your team gives you the lead and you can't hold on to it," Slowey said.

Slowey is 0-3 with a 3.67 ERA in six home outings, and 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in two overall in his career against the Mets. Buck is 3 for 11 against the right-hander, and Wright is 2 for 6 with a homer.

Preview: Tigers (30-24) at Orioles (31-25)
                                Game: 3
Venue: Oriole Park at Camden Yards
                                Date: June 02, 2013 1:35 PM EDT

Baltimore's Kevin Gausman has had a very rude introduction to the major leagues, and allowing home runs has been a particularly big problem.

Facing one of the best offenses in baseball doesn't figure to make his transition any easier.

Gausman tries a third time for his first major league victory Sunday when the Orioles and Detroit Tigers conclude a three-game set at Camden Yards.

In need of a starter with Wei-Yin Chen on the disabled list, the Orioles promoted the highly touted Gausman from Double-A and started him against Toronto on May 23. The 22-year-old right-hander showed flashes of potential in that outing but allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings in a 12-6 loss.

Gausman (0-2, 11.00 ERA) fared far worse against light-hitting Washington on Tuesday, lasting four innings after giving up seven runs - including three homers - and eight hits in a 9-3 defeat.

``Pitching in the big leagues is hard. He's got the talent to do it and eventually he will,' Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. ``I look forward to it being next time out. He knows mistakes get magnified here. But it's part of the process.'

After serving up four homers in nine innings, the Tigers (30-24) would appear to be a terrible matchup for Gausman, but the Orioles kept him on his regular turn instead of pushing his start to Tuesday against Houston.

Detroit and Baltimore are tied for the major league lead with 283 runs, and the Tigers rank first with a .278 batting average.

"That's something that's up to them, but obviously it shows that they have a lot of faith in me," Gausman told the team's official website. "My confidence is still there and I know that I have the pitches to be there. I just need to be more consistent with them and just try to get better, and just try to attack the bottom half of the zone."

Exactly what Gausman will have to deal with was on full display Saturday, when Detroit hit a season-high five homers in a 10-3 rout of the Orioles (31-25). Four of those home runs came in a wild fourth inning in which Baltimore starter Jason Hammel was ejected.

Hammel surrendered consecutive homers to Victor Martinez, Jhonny Peralta and Alex Avila in the frame and was ejected after hitting Matt Tuiasosopo with a pitch.

``I'm not going to make a big deal of it. I hit him with a slider,' Hammel said. ``Zero intent there to hit him. Obviously I give up three home runs, but I'm not the guy that answers getting hit around with hitting somebody. That's bush league if you ask me. It was a mistake. A slider that got away.'

Miguel Cabrera capped the eight-run inning with a grand slam, raising his major league-leading RBI total to 65. He's batting .436 with six homers and 14 RBIs in his last 10 games at Camden Yards.

Prince Fielder hit his first home run in 21 games for the Tigers, who had lost four in a row.

Baltimore will try to rebound against Rick Porcello (2-2, 5.29), who is coming off one of the best performances of his career. He matched a personal best with eight innings and struck out a career-high 11 in Detroit's 1-0 loss in 11 innings to Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

The right-hander had posted a 2.89 ERA in his first three starts in May before allowing five runs and 10 hits over five innings against Minnesota on May 23.

Porcello is 1-3 with a 4.50 ERA in five starts against the Orioles, losing his only meeting last season.

Nick Markakis is 6 for 13 with a home run off him.
