Thunder at Jazz: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Utah Jazz (+3, 200.5)

One of Utah’s most impressive victories of the season was a 15-point thumping of Oklahoma City on Feb. 12. The Thunder return to Salt Lake City again for Tuesday’s game against the Jazz with Utah hoping to repeat the impressive feat and move closer to wrapping up the eighth seed in the Western Conference. Utah has a half-game lead over the Los Angeles Lakers and owns the tiebreaker so the Lakers must finish ahead of the Jazz to claim the spot.

Oklahoma City is one game behind the San Antonio Spurs in the tussle for the No. 1 seed in the West. The Thunder lost to the New York Knicks on Sunday to fall behind the Spurs. Oklahoma City badly routed Utah in the most recent meeting on March 13, leading by as many as 32 points in a 110-87 home win. The Jazz have won six of their last seven games after winning at Golden State on Sunday and also boast a fabulous 29-10 home mark.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports Oklahoma, ROOT (Utah)

ABOUT THE THUNDER (56-21): Forward Kevin Durant is suddenly locked in a battle for the NBA scoring crown after Carmelo Anthony poured in 167 points in a four-game span. Both players have a 28.4 average – Anthony is officially at 28.44 to Durant’s 28.35 – as Durant seeks to win his fourth straight scoring title. Only legends Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan – who both won seven straight – have won four or more consecutive titles. Still, Durant claims landing another scoring crown is of a secondary nature. “I’m just going to play my game,” Durant said. “I’m not going to force it too much and think about it too much and try to get it. But if it’s meant to be, then it will happen.”

ABOUT THE JAZZ (41-37): Utah looked like a team that might fold when it lost 12 of 15 games in a woeful stretch from late February to late March. Now the Jazz are clicking and playing stellar basketball and have placed themselves in solid position to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. “I can’t say enough about this group of guys,” Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said after the win over Golden State. “This was all about them and them wanting it, and the way they came out. Although we made some mistakes in the game, everybody laid everything they had in them out here on the floor.”

                  TRENDS:

                  * Jazz are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
                  * Under is 6-0-2 in Thunder’s last eight vs. Western Conference foes.
                  * Home team is 5-0 ATS in the last five meetings.
                  * Under is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

                  BUZZER BEATERS

                  1. Oklahoma City has won 10 of the past 14 meetings, including two of three this season.

                  2. Utah’s starting lineup combined for just 26 points in the March loss to the Thunder.

                  3. Durant is shooting 61.9 percent from the field while averaging 27 points in the meetings against Utah.

                        Wednesday's Tips

                        April 10, 2013

The regular season wraps up next week in the NBA as all eight playoff spots are wrapped up in the Eastern Conference. The Western Conference still has the last playoff seed up in the air with the Lakers, Jazz, and Mavericks fighting it out for the eighth position. Back in the East, the two teams trailing the red-hot Knicks in the Atlantic Division hook up in Beantown for the final time this season.

Nets at Celtics - 8:05 PM EST

These two rivals are meeting up for the first time since Christmas in Brooklyn when the Celtics ran the Nets, 93-76 as short underdogs. The last time the Nets invaded TD Garden in late November, Rajon Rondo and Kris Humphries were involved in a benches-clearing melee that turned all the momentum on Brooklyn's side. The Nets cruised to a 95-83 victory as 3 ½-point 'dogs, despite shooting just 40% from the floor.

Brooklyn is creeping closer to the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs at 44-32, sitting less than three games ahead of Chicago and Atlanta for home-court advantage in the first round. On Brooklyn's recent eight-game road trip, P.J. Carlisemo's club cashed the 'over' seven times, while breaking the 107-point mark five times. Since mid-February, the Nets own a solid 7-3 ATS record as a road underdog.

The Celtics cashed easily in Sunday's 107-96 home victory over the Wizards as 5 ½-point favorites, just the third cover in the last 12 games. In the role of a favorite, Boston is just 2-5 ATS the previous seven contests after an 11-1 ATS run at TD Garden from late January through March.

Lakers at Blazers - 10:05 PM EST

Los Angeles heads up to the Rose Garden tonight with no rest following Tuesday's 104-96 home victory over New Orleans. The Lakers pulled a half-game ahead of the Jazz for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference after Utah was tripped up by Oklahoma City last night, as the Lakers take on the coldest team in the league tonight.

The Blazers are in the midst of an 0-8 SU/ATS slide, including five consecutive home losses. Portland is not a very deep team, but this club is hurting right now with Nicolas Batum and Wesley Matthews both expected to miss tonight's contest. In the five-game home skid, the Blazers have been limited to 98 points or less each time, including a 96-91 defeat to the Mavericks on Sunday in which Portland fell behind by 24 points at halftime.

The Lakers have won four of their last five during this late-season surge, but failed to cash in last night's win over the Hornets as 8 ½-point favorites. Los Angeles has struggled in the role of a road favorite recently, covering just one of its last five when laying points away from the Staples Center. The Lakers are 2-1 SU/ATS in the season series against the Blazers, but the lone loss did come at the Rose Garden on Halloween, 116-106.

Spurs at Nuggets - 10:35 PM EST

San Antonio fell a half-game behind Oklahoma City for the top record in the Western Conference after the Thunder won at Utah on Tuesday. The Spurs will have a tough task tonight with a trip to the Pepsi Center in Denver, as the Nuggets shoot for their 21st consecutive home victory.

Both teams' star point guards are expected back in the lineup tonight, as Ty Lawson will likely play limited minutes for the Nuggets. Lawson missed seven of the last eight games with a heel injury, as Denver put together a 6-1 SU and 3-4 ATS record in this stretch. Tony Parker will suit up for the Spurs after sitting out Saturday's home win over the Hawks with a shin injury, as San Antonio looks to improve on a recent 2-7 ATS slide.

During Denver's 20-game home winning streak, the Nuggets have cashed 15 times, while three of the ATS losses came as a favorite of at least nine points. The home team has won all three meetings in the season series, including Denver's 112-106 triumph in mid-December as 2 ½-point favorites. San Antonio has lost each of its last four road contests, while scoring less than 95 points in each defeat (4-0 to the 'under').

                          Fact or Fiction

                          April 9, 2013

                          FACT

The Los Angeles Lakers aren't going to make the playoffs: Sorry, Lakers fans. You aren't going to get into the dance. You've got five games left going into Tuesday night, and those games are against New Orleans, at Portland, Golden State, San Antonio, and Houston. You might go 4-1 in those games, and even if you do, Utah has to go 2-2 in its last four for you to still get into the second season. The Jazz have Oklahoma City on Tuesday, at Memphis, and a home-and-home with Minnesota.

The Trail Blazers are now the worst team in basketball: It's tough to say that a team that has 33 wins on the season is the worst in the league, but the Blazers are doing what they can to prove that we are right. They don't have Nicolas Batum for the rest of the season, and that really takes away one of the three formidable players that they have on their roster. Portland has lost eight straight games and has gone just 1-7 against the spread in those games. Each loss has come by double digits, and many of the games have ended in ATS losses of epic proportions. There isn't a team in the league that we would rather see on the schedule for the last few games of the year than this one.

Carmelo Anthony is the league's MVP: Is Carmelo Anthony really going to win the MVP Award? Probably not. But should he? Absolutely. There's no doubt that LeBron James is the best player on the planet at the moment, but he isn't necessarily the most valuable. Even without both James and Dwyane Wade in the fold, the Heat have proven that they are good enough to play in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks have won 12 games in a row down the stretch because of the play of Melo. Anthony now has four straight games with at least 36 points scored, and he is now right there for the league lead in scoring. In our opinion, on a team with very little talent around him, Anthony should be the league's MVP, just for the way that he has played down the stretch of the season.

                          FICTION

The No. 2 seed in the West is in a lot of trouble: Many think that the team that finishes No. 2 in the Western Conference is going to be in huge trouble. The No. 1 seed is going to likely end up getting Utah and then either the Clippers or the Grizzlies en route to the Western Conference Finals, while the No. 2 seed is going to be stuck with either Golden State or Houston and Denver. Yikes! We really don't think that the Spurs or the Thunder should be all that worried, though. These are the two teams that are going to be in the Western Conference Finals, and the biggest punishment for finishing at No. 2 instead of No. 1 is going to be having to go on the road for the first two games of that series. Oklahoma City survived the same situation last year, and there's no reason that it couldn't do so again if that were the predicament that it ended up in again in 2013.

Boston's ATS struggles: We really think that the Celtics are playing possum right now. They have only gone 6-10 SU and 6-10 ATS in their last 16 games, but the truth of the matter is that they haven't had anything to prove. Boston knows that it is going to be an underdog in the playoffs, and it doesn't matter whether it has to play the Pacers, the Knicks, the Bulls, or the Nets. It's all the same. In the end, the C's are going to have to beat at least Miami and either New York or Indiana to win the East. There's a reason that the minutes for Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce have decreased drastically in recent weeks. This is still the most dangerous of the bottom five seeds in the Eastern Conference as we see it.

The Denver Nuggets are legitimate contenders: For as well as the Nuggets have played in the second half of the season, we still aren't all that sure that they are going to get out of the first round of the playoffs, let alone contend for the NBA title. We see this every year in the postseason with Denver. You can run and gun your way into perhaps the second round, and you can run and gun your way to a win or two at home, but when push comes to shove, all that running and gunning doesn't get the job done against the big boys. Now, with Danilo Gallinari out for the season, there is no hope as we see it for Denver to knock off Oklahoma City or San Antonio in the second round of the playoffs.

Spurs at Nuggets: What bettors need to know
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Denver Nuggets (-3, 204.5)

The Denver Nuggets attempt to set a franchise record for consecutive home victories when they have a showdown with the Western Conference-leading San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday. The Nuggets previously won 20 straight home games during the 1984-85 campaign and are a league-best 35-3 at home this season. San Antonio is 23-15 on the road and waged in a battle with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the top spot in the West. The Spurs have a half-game lead.

Denver has won four consecutive games and 19 of its last 21 and has a half-game lead over the Memphis Grizzlies for the No. 3 seed in the West. The Nuggets have continued to win despite recent injuries to starts Danilo Gallinari (knee) and Ty Lawson (foot). Gallinari is out for the season and Lawson hopes to be back before the playoffs start. The Spurs will likely be without point guard Tony Parker (neck) and backup forward Boris Diaw (back) and continue to play without veteran guard Manu Ginobili (hamstring). San Antonio is 2-1 against the Nuggets this season.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, KENS (San Antonio), Altitude (Denver)

ABOUT THE SPURS (57-20, 39-36-2 ATS): Veteran power forward Tim Duncan has put together solid back-to-back outings. Duncan recorded double-doubles in both games while averaging 27.5 points and 12.5 rebounds as he moves forward from recent knee soreness. The 31-point performance in Saturday’s victory over the Atlanta Hawks was Duncan’s third 30-point contest since March 16. He has nine double-doubles over his last 11 outings. Duncan has put together three strong outings against the Nuggets this season, averaging 22.7 points, 12.3 rebounds and 4.3 blocks.

ABOUT THE NUGGETS (53-24, 47-29-1 ATS): Forward Wilson Chandler stepped into the starting lineup for the injured Gallinari and scored 21 points in Saturday’s 132-114 rout of the Houston Rockets. Chandler was deeply affected by Gallinari’s loss as the two have been close friends dating back to their time as teammates with the New York Knicks. They both arrived in Denver as part of the Carmelo Anthony deal and Chandler has been a valuable reserve while averaging 12.1 points this season. “Wilson gives us some very good talent and very good intangibles,” Nuggets coach George Karl said. “So does Gallo. But to be honest with you, they’re quite different. Gallo’s more of a shooter and playmaker. Wilson’s a dynamic runner and athlete.”

                                TRENDS:

                                * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings in Denver.

                                2. Spurs F Kawhi Leonard is averaging 23.5 points and 10 rebounds over the last two games following a two-game absence with a knee injury.

                                3. Guard Andre Iguodala had a season-best 14 assists and Andre Miller recorded 12 in the win over the Rockets.
