Spurs at Lakers: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers (+6, 204)

After carrying the Los Angeles Lakers all season, Kobe Bryant will have to watch his team make its final playoff push without him. Bryant will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn left Achilles’ tendon in the final minutes of Friday’s win over Golden State, and the Lakers will need to regroup quickly in order to hold onto the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. They have two regular-season games remaining, starting with Sunday’s matchup against the visiting San Antonio Spurs.

The game could be a first-round playoff preview if San Antonio grabs the first seed and Los Angeles maintains its one-game lead over ninth-place Utah. The Lakers, who finish the regular season on Wednesday at home against Houston, have no margin for error since the Jazz own the tiebreaker. The Lakers have lost four straight to the Spurs, who clinched at least the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference on Friday. San Antonio has struggled recently, losing four of their last seven games.

TV: 9:30 p.m. ET, KENS (San Antonio), TWC SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE SPURS (58-21): San Antonio made a surprising move on Friday, waiving veteran small forward Stephen Jackson just six days before the end of the regular season. “We’re getting ready for playoffs and putting our team together, what we want to do and who we want to do it with,” coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. Jackson, 35, averaged 6.2 points in 55 games this season. His release was prompted by several factors, including the emergence of Kawhi Leonard, who leads the team in steals.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (43-37): Los Angeles controls its playoff destiny, but hardly anyone was thinking about that after Bryant’s injury. “It’s a tough blow for everyone,” forward Pau Gasol told reporters in a quiet locker room after Friday’s 118-116 victory over the Warriors. “It’s difficult to ****** what happened.” Gasol registered his sixth career triple-double in the win, and the Lakers will need a repeat performance against the Spurs. Reserve guard Jodie Meeks is expected to start in place of Bryant.

          TRENDS:

          * Spurs are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
          * Under is 7-0 in Spurs’ last seven road games.
          * Over is 4-0 in Lakers’ last four overall.
          * Road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS

          1. Spurs F Boris Diaw will miss three to four weeks after having back surgery on Friday.

          2. Lakers PG Steve Nash has missed the last six games with lingering right hip and hamstring issues.

          3. The Lakers are 3-7 in their last 10 games against San Antonio.

Armadillo:Wednesday's List of 13: Some of our favorite events of the year........

There are certain things we look forward to each year which give our year a rhythm, a pace we’re used to. Here are some of my favorite sports-related events each year………
                      13) Australian Open on TV, January—When you’re up late at night writing about and handicapping basketball, always good to have some live TV on to keep you company. This is probably the only tennis tournament I’ll watch all year, but it is good stuff.

                      12) NFL schedule getting released—the old Viking coach Bud Grant always said, “Its not who you play, its when you play them.” Seeing the regular season, who gets what primetime games, the difficult schedule spots the league puts the better teams in, its always an interesting night when the schedule comes out.

Its also fun when the Las Vegas sportsbooks put lines out for every game from Weeks 1-16, so people can speculate in the spring/summer what will be happening in the fall. Not as easy as it sounds.

                      11) When our keeper league fantasy baseball draft starts, whenever they drop the green flag at the Daytona 500 (unrelated events, just a milestone that winter is almost over).

The original 18-team, 24-player per team draft took 82 days to complete eight years ago; the shorter drafts now last a week or so.

                      10) You can make a solid argument now that Thanksgiving weekend is the best sports weekend of the year: late season NFL games, rivalry games in college football, some of the better pre-conference college basketball games, plus coconut custard pie and cranberry sauce. Whats not to like?

                      9) British Open—My favorite golf tournament because I’m out in Las Vegas that weekend and the TV coverage comes on at like 4am out there and it totally ruins whatever sleep patterns have existed until that part of the trip. By time tournament ends, I’m clueless as to what time it is, what day it is, but I know vacation is almost over.

                      8) NBA Summer League—Same July trip in Vegas is the showcase league for both NBA teams and all the overseas leagues that sign American players. Usually spend 2-3 full days watching games.

                      Underrated and surprisingly inexpensive fun.

                      7) Daily routine of baseball—From 7pm-1am Monday-Saturday from April until Labor Day, you’ll probably find me in front of the TV/laptop following baseball; in September football joins in too.

Something about the daily routine of it that makes it special, gives life a timeline to follow every day.

                      6) College football Saturdays—From noon til 2am every Saturday from Labor Day until early December, listen to bands and watch lot of football. Vegas casinos are great during college football; people coming from all over to back their favorite teams. I’ve been to games at Penn State, Tennessee, South Carolina; the tailgating experience is really something, and by that I mean its way better in warmer weather!!!!

                      5) Stanley Cup playoffs—Any overtime game in hockey is tremendous drama; this sport is best suited for the best-of-7 format, unlike the NBA, which would be better off with a best-of-3 format. Hockey playoffs are great fun, especially if you’ve ever hung out in a sportsbook with women from Vancouver watching the Canucks play.

                      4) Minor league baseball is underrated fun, whether over the river here in Troy (Astros’ Class A team) or Las Vegas (Mets’ AAA team). Inexpensive tickets, hot dogs; what could be better?

                      3) College basketball Championship Week—Wall-to-wall game for 3-4 days, all with tremendous meaning. In some ways, Championship Week is more fun than the NCAA tournament; certainly has lot more action.

                      2) NFL Sundays—When the Rams are good, NFL Sundays are the pinnacle of any week for me, but even in lean years, they’re great fun. Only reason I have DirecTV is so I can have the NFL Sunday Ticket in my house, that’s how much fun it is.

                      1) First weekend of NCAA tournament— the best four days of the sports year, simple as that.

Rockets at Lakers: What bettors need to know
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Rockets at Los Angeles Lakers (-2.5, 203)

The Los Angeles Lakers can make the playoffs by beating the visiting Houston Rockets on Wednesday or having Utah lose to Memphis. Los Angeles has won seven of eight games in its late-season push and would actually claim the No. 7 seed in the Western Conference by beating the Rockets. Houston is one game ahead of Los Angeles entering the contest and also one game behind the Golden State Warriors, who are in sixth place heading into the final day.

The Rockets suffered a dreadful 119-112 loss to lowly Phoenix on Monday and that defeat has put them in danger of slipping into the No. 8 spot with the loss to the Lakers. Houston coach Kevin McHale is aware that winning the contest at the Staples Center is going to be an arduous task. “We are going to play a determined L.A. team,” McHale said. “We have to play well.” The Lakers will be playing their second game since losing Kobe Bryant to a torn Achilles’ tendon. Los Angeles notched a 91-86 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday without the superstar. The Lakers are 1-2 against the Rockets this season.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN, Comcast SportsNet Houston, Time Warner Cable SportsNet (Los Angeles)

ABOUT THE ROCKETS (45-36, 41-39-1 ATS): Houston has lost three of its last five games despite playing a light April schedule. That has prompted concern with the playoffs about to commence. “I think that has been one of our problems all season – focus,” point guard Jeremy Lin said. “It usually comes with a younger team. At this point of the season, it is really not an excuse. Every game means so much. We are talking about playoff seeding. We are talking about matchups and things that are more important than anything we played for all season.” Leading scorer James Harden was just 5-of-18 from the field while scoring 16 points in the loss to the Suns. Harden averages 25.9 points.

ABOUT THE LAKERS (44-37, 33-46-2 ATS): Center Dwight Howard had a monster game against San Antonio with 26 points and 17 rebounds. He is one rebound away from becoming the youngest player in NBA history to reach 9,000 career rebounds. Howard will be 27 years, 130 days old on Wednesday and legends Wilt Chamberlain (27 years, 144 days) and Bill Russell (27 years, 357 days) are the only other players to reach 9,000 before age 28. Guard Steve Blake stepped up with a season-best 23 points against the Spurs and will play a key role the rest of the season with Bryant sidelined. Blake averages 6.9 points.

                                BUZZER BEATERS
