              Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Odds to win The Masters, which starts Thursday morning in Augusta:

              3-1—Eldrick Woods- Hasn't won a green jacket since 2005.

8-1—Rory McIlroy- Rounding into form after change of equipment?

10-1—Phil Mickelson- Course seems to favor lefties.

              25-1—Adam Scott/Keegan Bradley/Louis Oosthuizen

              30-1—Luke Donald/Matt Kuchar/Brandt Snedeker

              35-1—Bubba Watson- Defending champ.

              *****

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a spring day......

              13) Arizona State basketball coach Herb Sendek got a lot smarter this week, when PG Jahii Carson announced he’s going back to ASU for this sophomore season. Sun Devils will be in the NCAA’s next March.

              12) John Calipari is probably the best recruiter ever, right?

Kentucky already has an 8-man recruiting class for this year and if Andrew Wiggins, the country’s #1 recruit signs on with UK, it’ll be nine guys. I’m thinking anyone who was on this year’s team is going to have to fight like hell just to get minutes next year.

              11) There is a movie being made where Kevin Costner is the GM of the Browns and Denis Leary the Browns' coach.

Leary as a football coach will be worth the $10 by itself.

              10) Memo to DirecTV: I’ll trade you three soccer channels, two tennis channels, and a whole tier of Spanish language porn channels if you give us the Pac-12 Network. Please?

              9) San Diego State assistant coach Tony Bland was making $120,000 with the Aztecs; now he’s moved on to work with Andy Enfield at USC and he’ll be making $300,000. Enfield was making $157,000 at FGCU.

              8) Speaking of Enfield, he was a guest on The Tonight Show last night; his supermodel wife didn't come with him, maybe because one of the other guests was Charlie Sheen.

              7) NBA scouts are unanimous that college basketball is more physical than the NBA; that needs to change. Wouldn’t take much, just call more fouls on the defense.

              6) Par-3 tournament at Augusta on Wednesday of Masters week is pretty cool; Rory McIlroy had his girlfriend caddy for him, pretty good athlete in her own right, tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

              5) Indians manager Terry Francona lives two blocks from Progressive Field, the Indians ballpark, but he got lost walking there for the home opener Monday. Once he found his way to the park, Terry caught the ceremonial first pitch from his dad Tito, a former Indians player. Good moment.

              4) The betting over/under for Eldrick Woods’ finish at Augusta this week: 4.5th place.

He finishes 4th and you play over, you win; he finishes 5th, you lose.

              3) If you go to a Diamondbacks game at Chase Field and catch a homer hit by an Arizona player, you can have ball signed by him- pretty cool idea.

              2) Red Sox' sellout streak of 820 games at Fenway Park came to an end Wednesday when 30,862 saw Boston lose to the Orioles 8-5, with Manny Machado hitting a dramatic three-run homer in the ninth inning, off Boston's new closer, Joel Hanrahan.

              1) Kobe Bryant had 47 points as the Lakers won for only the third time in their last 15 visits to Portland, a pivotal win for their playoff hopes. Utah Jazz was rooting hard for the Blazers, but Lakers won 113-106.

NBA doubleheader: Knicks at Bulls, Thunder at Warriors
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Chicago Bulls (+4, 190.5)

Two weeks after ending the Miami Heat's string of 27 consecutive wins, the Chicago Bulls have a chance to play streak-busters again when they host the red-hot New York Knicks on Thursday. The Knicks have ripped off 13 straight victories but have dropped all three meetings this season to the injury-riddled Bulls, who are trying to hold off the Atlantic Hawks for the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

While Chicago has faltered down the stretch, losing back-to-back games to conference also-rans Detroit and Toronto, the Knicks are on their best tear in two decades. Tuesday's rout of the Washington Wizards clinched New York's first Atlantic Division title since 1994 and gave the team its longest winning streak since winning 15 in a row during that same season. The Knicks own a 2 1/2-game lead over Indiana for the No. 2 seed in the East.

TV: 8 p.m. TNT, MSG (New York)

ABOUT THE KNICKS (51-26, 43-32-2 ATS): Carmelo Anthony continued his Jordanesque roll with his fifth consecutive game of at least 36 points. He is averaging 40.6 points during that span and holds a razor-thin edge over Kevin Durant (28.6 to 28.3) for the league scoring title. Tuesday's win was dulled by an injury to forward Kenyon Martin, who suffered what coach Mike Woodson termed a "severe sprain" of his left ankle. The injury to Martin, who missed the previous two games with a sore knee, further depletes a front line. Center Tyson Chandler sat out Tuesday due to soreness from the neck injury that recently caused him to miss 10 games.

ABOUT THE BULLS (42-35, 34-43-0 ATS): Chicago was missing four players in Tuesday's loss to Toronto and that figures to be the case again versus the Knicks. Center Joakim Noah, who aggravated a plantar fascia injury in Sunday's home loss to Detroit, is planning to get a cortisone shot to help him get back on the court. Forwards Luol Deng (hip) and Taj Gibson (knee) are expected to sit out against New York. The status on Rose, who has yet to play this season following major knee surgery, remains the same. On the plus side, guard Richard Hamilton (back) saw his first action since Feb. 26 and Marco Belinelli was back in the starting lineup.

                TRENDS:

                * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.
                * Underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                * Knicks are 0-4 ATS in the last four meetings.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. New York hasn't been swept by the Bulls since losing all four meetings in 2003-04.

                2. Seven of Chicago's last eight games have been decided by four points or fewer.

                3. Anthony is the first Knicks player with five straight games of 35 or more points since Bernard King in 1984-85.

Oklahoma City Thunder at Golden State Warriors (+3.5, 204.5)

The Golden State Warriors clinched their first playoff berth since the 2006-07 season on Tuesday. Ironically, if they want to avoid beginning the playoffs against the Oklahoma City Thunder, it would be in the Warriors’ best interests to beat the visiting Thunder on Thursday. Golden State is trying to beat out the Houston Rockets for the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference, which would avoid either Oklahoma City or San Antonio in the first round.

The Thunder are tied with the Spurs for first place in the West and home-court advantage throughout the Western Conference playoffs. Oklahoma City helped the Warriors clinch a playoff berth by beating the Utah Jazz on Tuesday and has won four of its last five while focusing on the defensive end. Golden State will try to keep Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant out of the lane with their Andrew Bogut-led frontline while making them work on the perimeter.

                TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE THUNDER (57-21, 47-29-2 ATS): Oklahoma City has been tuning up for the playoffs by showing off on the defensive end. The top-scoring team in the NBA for much of the season, the Thunder have slowed the pace recently and have held opponents an average of 84.9 points in their last seven wins. Two of the best performances of that span came on the road at Indiana in a 97-75 victory on Friday and in Tuesday’s 90-80 victory at Utah. Kevin Durant has not slowed his own scoring much during the recent run and went for 21 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists against the Jazz on Tuesday. Westbrook has put up 27.2 points, 8.6 rebounds and 7.2 assists in the last five games after scoring 21 or fewer in each of the previous five contests.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (45-33, 39-38-1 ATS): Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson can match Durant and Westbrook shot for shot when they get going, and Thompson has recently pulled out of a long slump. The second-year guard scored 25 of his 30 points in the first half on Tuesday to keep Golden State in the game before Curry came alive after the break to guide the Warriors past the Minnesota Timberwolves 105-89. Even more impressive than Curry and Thompson on the perimeter Tuesday was the inside play of David Lee, Bogut and Harrison Barnes. Each of the three finished in double figures in rebounds as Golden State dominated up front. Bogut has turned into a defensive force in the middle who rarely scores unless it is off an offensive rebound. That leaves Lee to grab rebounds off the weak side and focus on scoring while Barnes and Carl Landry offer support.

                TRENDS:

                * Home team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
                * Thunder are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                * Favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
                * Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings.

                BUZZER BEATERS:

                1. Curry (249) and Thompson (203) are first and second in the NBA in 3-pointers and are the first pair of teammates to each go over 200 since Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker for the Boston Celtics in 2001-02.

                2. Oklahoma City has taken five of the previous six in the series but lost at Golden State 104-99 on Jan. 23.

                3. Durant has averaged 30.4 points and 8.7 rebounds in 20 career games against the Warriors.

                            Sunday Night Tips

                            April 14, 2013

The final Sunday card takes place in the NBA regular season today with eight games on the board. The only playoff spot to be determined is the eighth seed in the Western Conference, but the Lakers are in trouble after losing Kobe Bryant to a torn Achilles tendon in Friday's two-point win over the Warriors. We'll take a look at the four evening affairs, starting at the Pepsi Center with two teams going in completely opposite directions.

Blazers at Nuggets - 5:05 PM EST

Denver continues to roll at the Pepsi Center with 21 consecutive victories, but the Nuggets are looking for a bounce-back effort today after Friday's overtime defeat at Dallas. The Nuggets are barely hanging onto the third playoff spot in the Western Conference, owning a half-game advantage over the Clippers and Grizzlies.

The Blazers have been the biggest disaster in the league since late March by losing 10 straight games, while covering only once in this span as a 10 ½-point underdog at Utah in a 112-102 defeat on April 1. Terry Stotts' team has dropped seven consecutive contests at the Rose Garden, while each of their last three road setbacks have come by double-digits.

The Nuggets close the regular season against three teams sitting below .500 (Bucks and Suns ahead), while settling for second place in the Northwest Division behind Oklahoma City. George Karl's club owns a 2-5 ATS record the last seven opportunities as a home favorite of at least 10 points, as the Blazers pushed the Nuggets to overtime in the last visit to Denver. Portland forced the extra session with a late three-pointer, but fell in overtime, 115-111 as nine-point 'dogs in mid-January.

Mavericks at Hornets - 6:05 PM EST

Dallas made a valiant comeback to sneak back into the playoff picture towards the end of the season, but just came up short as the Mavs attempt to finish above .500. Rick Carlisle's squad heads to the Big Easy tonight for the first of two meetings this week against New Orleans, as the road team has won each of the first two matchups this season.

The Mavs have won six of their last eight games away from the American Airlines Center, while posting a 6-0 SU and 5-1 ATS record the previous six road contests in the role of a favorite. Dallas rallied past New Orleans in the last trip to Louisiana in late February, a 104-100 triumph as one-point 'chalk,' thanks to a three-pointer by Vince Carter in the final minute of play.

The Hornets couldn't seal the deal in Friday's home loss to the Clippers, but New Orleans managed a cover as nine-point 'dogs in a 96-93 defeat. Monty Williams' club is 5-3 ATS the past eight games in the home 'dog role, including outright wins over the Nuggets, Celtics, and Grizzlies. The defense has clamped down at home recently, allowing less than 100 points in seven of the last nine games.

Kings at Rockets - 7:05 PM EST

Houston sits a half-game behind Golden State for the sixth seed in the Western Conference, as the Rockets own the tiebreaker in the case the two teams finish with identical records. The Rockets play their regular-season home finale tonight, as Kevin McHale's team has limped to a 3-6 ATS record in the previous nine games, including a home setback to Memphis on Friday, 82-78.

The Kings are fresh off three consecutive covers following a late surge in Friday's 108-101 loss at San Antonio as 10 ½-point underdogs. Sacramento has quietly put together a 7-2 ATS mark in the last nine road contests, including four straight ATS wins away from Sleep Train Arena. Keith Smart's club is 6-2 ATS the last eight opportunities as a double-digit road underdog, while trying to avenge a recent home loss to Houston, 112-102 as four-point 'dogs.

The Rockets are not lighting up the scoreboard like they did earlier this season, as this team is riding a 10-1 stretch to the 'under' the last 11 home contests. Seven of those 'unders' came with a total of 204 or higher, as tonight's total sits at 216 ½, thanks to Sacramento ranking last in the league in defense. Houston has cashed just twice in the last nine opportunities as a home favorite, as the Kings are making their lone trip to the Toyota Center this season.

Spurs at Lakers - 9:35 PM EST

Los Angeles received the devastating news of Kobe Bryant's torn Achilles tendon on Saturday, sidelining the former MVP for at least six-to-nine months. The Lakers found a way to squeeze by the Warriors on Friday, 118-116 for their third straight win, but L.A. needs to dig deep to stave off Utah for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Spurs are likely content finishing with the second seed in the Western Conference playoffs behind Oklahoma City, although Gregg Popovich's team enters tonight's action just a half-game behind the Thunder. San Antonio has alternated wins and losses in each of its last six games, coming off Friday's victory over Sacramento. The Spurs recently have been a disaster by posting a 3-12 ATS record the last 15 trips to the court, while dropping five consecutive games away from the AT&T Center.

The Lakers have split the two games in which Bryant sat out this season against the Kings and Suns. Los Angeles has won six of its last seven to control its own destiny for a playoff spot, but it will be difficult with Bryant out and Steve Nash listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury that has kept the point guard out for six consecutive games. The Lakers try to avoid the season sweep to the Spurs tonight, which includes an 84-82 home defeat as one-point 'dogs back in November.

                              Sunday, April 14

Fullcourt press: Sunday's NBA betting notes
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Chicago Bulls at Miami Heat (-9.5, 188)

Chicago is a half-game behind the Atlanta Hawks in fifth place in the East, which is the difference between starting the playoffs at Indiana or Brooklyn. The Bulls snapped the Heat’s 27-game winning streak on March 27, and did so with a brand of physical play that had Miami off its game. The Bulls frustrated James so much that eventually he barreled into a screen set by Boozer and earned himself a flagrant foul. The Heat have lost two of three to Chicago this season. Chicago F Joakim Noah (foot) is questionable.

Brooklyn Nets at Toronto Raptors (+3.5, 194.5)

The Nets have won four straight games to pull within two games of third-place Indiana with three to play. Toronto has already had an impact on the potential playoff matchups in the East by knocking off the Chicago Bulls twice in a span of four days this week. The Raptors have won four of five overall but have dropped all three meetings with the Nets this season. The over is 10-1 in the Nets’ last 11 road games.

Indiana Pacers at New York Knicks (-4, 194)

The New York Knicks can clinch the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference by defeating the visiting Indiana Pacers. New York has won 14 of 15 games behind the scoring spree of forward Carmelo Anthony. The Pacers have lost three of four games. Indiana is 2-1 against New York this season. The Pacers routed New York 125-91 on Feb. 20 in the most recent meeting. The over is 5-1 in Indiana’s last six overall.

                              Cleveland Cavaliers at Philadelphia 76ers (-5, 197)

Cleveland has dropped three straight games and 13 of the last 15. The Cavaliers got 31 points from Kyrie Irving on Friday but could not keep up with the New York Knicks in a 101-91 setback. Philadelphia has taken seven of the last eight in the series. The under is 9-1 in the Cavaliers’ last 10 vs. NBA Atlantic foes.

Portland Trail Blazers at Denver Nuggets (-14.5, 209)

The Denver Nuggets can set a franchise record for victories when they host the struggling Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday. Denver has matched the mark of 54 wins set twice previously and also looks to take another step toward landing the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference. The Nuggets are 36-3 at home and have won a club-record 21 straight games on the home floor. Portland has lost 10 straight games. The Trail Blazers are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 vs. Western Conference opponents.

Dallas Mavericks at New Orleans Hornets (+3, 195.5)

New Orleans is limping to the finish line, having lost three straight and seven of the last nine. The Hornets' only two wins in that span have come against a pair of 24-win teams in Phoenix and Cleveland. Rookie forward Anthony Davis, the No. 1 overall pick, is done for the season after suffering a sprained knee ligament in Wednesday's lost at the Sacramento Kings. The teams have split of pair of tight matchups this season, with the road team winning each time. The Mavericks are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.

Sacramento Kings at Houston Rockets (-10.5, 216.5)

The Rockets are in seventh place, a half-game behind sixth-place Golden State, as they look to get back on track after losing two of their last three. Houston has won eight of its past 10 contests against Sacramento. The Kings have dropped five of their last six, including a 108-101 loss at San Antonio on Friday. Sacramento is 4-0 ATS in its last four road games.
