Game of the day: Louisville at UConn
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Louisville at Connecticut (+6)

No. 4 Louisville is on an impressive run and seeks its 11th consecutive victory when it visits Connecticut in Hartford on Monday. The Cardinals are one of three unbeaten teams in Big East play and are off to the program’s best start since opening 16-1 during the 2003-04 campaign. Louisville coach Rick Pitino is expecting a fierce battle with the Huskies, who notched an impressive road victory at Notre Dame on Saturday under first-year coach Kevin Ollie. “They are a terrific team,” Pitino said. “I’m really happy for them because I love their coach. He is a class young man and I knew he would do a great job.” UConn has won two consecutive games and is 8-0 on its home courts.

      TV: 7 p.m. ET, ESPN.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (15-1, 3-0 Big East): Sophomore forward Chane Behanan was a surprise participant in the victory over South Florida and grabbed 12 rebounds while scoring seven points. It was feared Behanan would miss three or four games after he sprained his left ankle on Jan. 7 but he missed just one outing. “My whole foot was swollen for three days and there’s still pain,” Behanan said. “But it’s something I could tolerate and won’t let dictate us getting out of the Top 5 in the country. I can handle the pain.” Behanan is third on the Cardinals in scoring (11.1) and second in rebounding (7.4). Junior guard Russ Smith averages a team-best 18.7 points, senior point guard Peyton Siva contributes 11.9 points and a team-best 5.8 assists and junior center Gorgui Dieng checks in at 9.6 points and 9.8 rebounds per outing.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT (12-3, 2-1 Big East): Junior forward Tyler Olander delivered a stunning performance with a career-high 16 points in the win over Notre Dame. Olander entered the contest with a 4.6 scoring average and hit 8-of-9 shots in the best effort of his career. “It’s definitely very rewarding,” said Olander, now averaging 5.3 points. “Things weren’t really working out for me at the beginning of the season. I stuck with it and kept working hard and got into the gym. It feels good to finally have hard work paying off.” Junior guard Shabazz Napier leads the Huskies with a 17.5 scoring average. Sophomore guard Ryan Boatright (16.1), sophomore forward DeAndre Daniels (11 points) and freshman guard Omar Calhoun (10.1) also average in double digits.

      TRENDS:

      * Cardinals are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 road games.
      * Huskies are 6-1 ATS in their last seven vs. Big East foes.
      * Cardinals are 6-1 ATS in their last seven Monday games.
      * Cardinals are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

      TIP-INS:

      1. Louisville leads the series 7-6 and routed UConn 80-59 in last season’s lone meeting.

      2. Siva had 17 points in Saturday’s win over South Florida to become the 64th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points. He has 1,004.

      3. UConn is shooting just 32.5 percent from 3-point range with Napier (40.3) the only player shooting better than 40 percent.

                Games to Watch

                January 14, 2013

The ranks of the unbeaten in men's college basketball dwindled to none with recent losses by Duke, Michigan and Arizona. This along with a few other shocking upsets over the course of last week's games should cause a major shake-up in this week's polls as well as open the door for a few other hot teams to continue their climb up to the top of the rankings.

Turning to this week's games, the following is a brief look at the top matchup on each day's slate along with a few facts and figures to help handicap the games.

                Monday, Jan. 14

No. 3 Louisville Cardinals vs. Connecticut Huskies

Louisville finds itself near the top of the Big East with last Wednesday's victory over Seton Hall along with a 64-38 rout of South Florida this past Saturday as an 18 ½-point home favorite. The Cardinals are now 15-1 straight-up overall and 3-0 in conference play. They are 9-7 against the spread this season and a profitable 5-2 ATS on the road. Louisville's Russ Smith is averaging 18.7 points a game with Peyton Siva chipping-in 11.9 points and a team-high 5.8 assists.

Kevin Ollie has done an excellent job at coaching the surprising Huskies to a 12-3 SU start that includes an impressive 65-58 upset of No.17 Notre Dame as 8 ½-point road underdogs this past Saturday. Connecticut is 5-6 ATS and the total has gone OVER in two of its last three games. Another main reason for this team's early success can be attributed to the stellar play of Shabazz Napier (17.5 points and 4.0 assists) and Ryan Boatright (16.1 points and 4.5 rebounds).

                Tuesday, Jan. 15

Wisconsin Badgers vs. No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers

The Badgers remained undefeated in Big Ten play with a huge 74-51 victory over No.12 Illinois this past Saturday as 6 ½-point favorites at home. The win raised their overall record to 12-4 SU but they are still 5-9 ATS. This was the just the second time in Wisconsin's last seven games that it was able to cover the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in five of those seven games. It is a perfect 10-0 SU against Indiana in the past 10 meetings and 8-2 ATS.

Indiana posted its sixth-straight victory with Saturday's 88-81 win over Minnesota, but it failed to cover as an eight-point home favorite. This leaves the Hoosiers 15-1 SU and 9-4 ATS with the total going OVER in four of its last seven games. They continue to lead the nation in scoring with an average of 87.1 points a game while shooting a deadly 51.1 percent from the floor. Cody Zeller has led the way with 16.6 points and 7.8 rebounds a game.

                Wednesday, Jan. 16

No. 20 N.C. State Wolfpack vs. Maryland Terrapins

The Wolfpack will be moving up the charts with their 84-76 upset of Duke this past Saturday as one-point home underdogs. It was their 10th-straight victory to move to 14-2 SU overall and it also tied them with Miami for the lead in the ACC at 3-0. NC State is 8-6 ATS this season and the total has gone OVER in four of its last five games. It comes into this matchup as the No.1 shooting team in the nation with a field goal percentage of 52.8.

Maryland lost its second-straight ACC game with a 54-47 setback to the Hurricanes this past Sunday as a six-point road underdog. It is now 1-2 in the conference and 13-3 overall. The Terrapins have a 5-4 record ATS and the total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games. They are averaging 74.8 points and have done a great job under the boards with 43.1 rebounds a game.

                Thursday, Jan. 17

No. 11 Florida Gators vs. Texas A&M Aggies

Florida won its first two SEC games with victories this past week over Georgia and LSU. It is now 12-2 SU on the year and 7-4 ATS. The total stayed UNDER in Saturday's game against the Tigers but it had gone OVER in its previous three. The Gators are shooting a respectable 48.3 percent from the field and averaging 73.6 points a game. They have four different players scoring in double figures led by Kenny Boynton's 13.8 point average.

The Aggies are off to a perfect 2-0 SU start in their new conference with back-to-back wins over Arkansas as 1 ½-point home favorites and Kentucky as 15-point underdogs on the road. They are 12-3 SU overall and 5-3 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last four games with a posted line. Texas A&M is led by Elston Turner, who leads the team in scoring (17.1 points) and rebounds (6.5). As a team, the Aggies are averaging 66.7 points a game.

                Friday, Jan. 18

Stony Brook Seawolves vs. Vermont Catamounts

With a very thin schedule of games on Friday night, the America East will take center-stage on ESPNU with a matchup between two of the top teams in the conference. Stony Brook heads into Tuesday's matchup against Boston University at 12-4 SU overall and 3-0 in conference play. It is averaging 67.1 points a game while shooting 42.3 percent from the floor. The Seawolves boast a trio of players scoring in double-figures led by Jameel Warney's 12.3 points a game.

Vermont faces-off against Binghamton on Wednesday night with a 3-1 SU record in the America East. It is 10-6 SU overall 5-2 at home this season. Its only blemish in the conference was a 63-53 loss to Boston U last Tuesday in a game that had no posted line. The Catamounts have struggled offensively at times with an average of 62.1 points a game and they are shooting 42.1 percent from the floor.

                  Under the Radar

                  January 13, 2013

It was a topsy-turvy week in college hoops, especially over the weekend. The last two remaining unbeaten teams (Duke, Michigan) suffered their first losses. A few things remaining relatively unchanged, however, especially if you have been following this column with some regularity.

The Appalachian State Mountaineers (6-8 SU, 9-0 ATS) were a pick 'em or small home dog to the visiting Elon Phoenix (8-7 SU, 6-4 ATS) over the weekend. A huge surge in the first half looked to be the end of App State's dominance against the number, but they stormed back to tie it at halftime, and then the Mountaineers dominated in the second half for yet another cover. They're the only unbeaten team against the spread in major college hoops (minimum five games ATS). We were bit by the Marshall Thundering Herd (8-9 SU, 1-10-1 ATS) early in the week, as they mashed the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (10-7 SU, 7-6 ATS) for their first cover of the season. However, the Thundering Herd was back to form with a road loss against the UTEP Miners (8-6 SU, 7-6 ATS) Saturday night.

Northern Colorado (3-11 SU, 1-11 ATS): The Bears of NCU have been terrible straight-up and against the number. They are also just 2-3 straight-up at home with wins against bad North Dakota and Northern Arizona teams. They have failed to cover five straight games, including all three of their games against the spread at home. Portland State is 5-8 straight-up this season, but an impressive 7-4 ATS. Remember that Thursday when perusing the schedule. Eastern Washington is a pretty terrible team, and it might be a good idea to shy away with two bad teams facing each other.

This week: Portland State, Thursday; Eastern Washington, Saturday

Richmond (11-6 SU, 3-11 ATS): The Spiders are a pretty good overall, but they have been terrible against the number. The Spiders have failed to cover their past two games, six of the past seven, and 11 of the past 13. They've been especially bad on the road, failing to cover four straight. Remember that when they play a good Bulldogs team, although they might be without G Rotnei Clarke (neck). He was hospitalized Saturday in Dayton after leaving on a stretcher following a hard foul. Then, the Spiders face a red-hot Charlotte team at home. It could be an ugly week both in the win-loss column and against the spread.

This week: at Butler, Wednesday; Charlotte, Saturday

Sacramento State (8-6 SU, 2-7-1 ATS): Sac State has been a decent team overall, winning eight of their 14 games straight-up. But they have been woeful against the number, especially of late. While they were road dogs at Eastern Washington Saturday, they won outright to stop the bleeding. But they are still 1-7-1 ATS over their past nine. At first glance, Idaho State is terrible overall, going 3-11 straight-up. But they are 7-6 ATS, so it might be another failed cover for Sac State. Weber State is a good team at 10-3 overall, and they are so-so (5-5) against the number. Check out the trends in that one over the weekend before investing against the Hornets.

This week: at Idaho State, Thursday; at Weber State, Saturday

The Citadel (3-11 SU, 1-7 ATS): The Bulldogs have been terrible straight-up and against the number. They'll take on their cross-town rivals Monday. The Cougars of Charleston are 5-0 straight-up on the road, and 5-2 ATS in their past seven meetings at The Citadel. More importantly, the Bulldogs have failed to cover in seven straight and five SoCon games in a row. Look for the week to get off to a terrible start, which is music to the ears of bettors. Davidson has alternated covers and losses in each of their past six. Look for bettors to continue loading up against The Citadel this week.

This week: Charleston, Monday; at Davidson, Thursday; at Georgia Southern, Saturday

Western Illinois (14-3 SU, 10-3 ATS): The Leathernecks of WIU are 14-3 overall this season, but they are particularly impressive at home. The 'Necks are 9-0 straight-up at home, and that's good news with two more home games coming this week. They have rattled off 11 consecutive victories, and they have covered seven of their past eight. The only failed cover was Jan. 5 against IUPUI, a team which we talked about last week. They, too, have been hot against the spread. The Leathernecks were 5-0 ATS at home until that overtime win against the Jaguars of IUPUI. The South Dakota State team is pretty stout, but they have failed to cover two of their past three. Beware of betting big against North Dakota, however, as they have covered five straight road games, and seven of their past eight.

This week: South Dakota State, Thursday; North Dakota, Saturday

No. 2 Indiana hosts red-hot Wisconsin Tuesday

                    WISCONSIN BADGERS (12-4)

                    at INDIANA HOOSIERS (15-1)

                    Assembly Hall – Bloomington, IN
                    Tip-off: Tuesday, 9:00 p.m. ET
                    Line: Indiana -10.5, Total: 134.5

Coming off an impressive 23-point dismantling of then-No. 12 Illinois, Wisconsin will look to upset another Big Ten foe as it heads to No. 2 Indiana on Tuesday night.

Something will have to give in this matchup as the Hoosiers feature the nation’s top scoring offense at 87.1 PPG while the Badgers hold opponents to a pithy 54.7 PPG, the sixth-lowest average in Division I. The Hoosiers make 51.1% FG (fourth in Division I) but have yet to see a defense like this one all season.

Can Indiana win convincingly over defensive-minded Wisconsin in this matchup? For the answer, connect to College Basketball Best Bets for all the Expert picks throughout the entire 2012-13 season. The ******* experts have a collective 24-18 ATS (57%) mark in the past six days, boosting them to 53% ATS (224-202-8) in college basketball Best Bets for the season, led by ******* Gary, who sits at 58% ATS (51-37) for the season, while ******* Dave is at 54.3% ATS (82-69-3) on the year. Dave is also 5-1-1 ATS (83%) since Nov. 24 when he mentions the word "hammer" in his analysis, including 3-1 ATS when he uses the term "Hammertime" for a favorite covering a large spread. ******* Scott is 51.1% ATS for the season, after going 8-4 ATS since Monday, and ******* Brian is 4-3 ATS in the past three days.

The Badgers are very tough to blow out with their methodical pace on offense and ability to take care of the basketball with just 8.9 turnovers per game (best in nation). During their current six-game win streak, they have just 7.2 TOPG. Six-foot-10 C Jared Berggren (13.4 PPG, 6.4 RPG) leads the Wisconsin offense from the inside out and is coming off a double-double against the Fighting Illini (15 points, 12 boards). He also blocks 2.1 shots per game, and has 3.0 BPG over the team’s past four contests. Junior G Ben Brust (11.1 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 3.1 APG) runs the point and is a great rebounder despite standing at 6-foot-1. He has been struggling on offense lately though, with just one double-digit scoring output in his last five games, and making just 9-of-28 shots in his past three contests. Wisconsin’s third and final double-digit scorer is senior PF Ryan Evans (11.4 PPG, 7.8 RPG) who has six straight double-figure scoring games with 13.2 PPG and 9.0 RPG during this streak. He and Berggren should be able to effectively compete with the Hoosiers for rebounds and give the Badgers a shot here, as the team holds a +11.2 RPG margin this season, with 41.5 RPG compared to 30.3 RPG from their opponents.

Tom Crean’s Hoosiers also feature one of the top rebounding teams (41.5 RPG, 11th in D-I) and passing teams (17.1 APG, 12th in D-I). Preseason National Player of the Year C Cody Zeller (16.6 PPG, 7.8 RPG) leads the offense with his athletic 7-foot frame, which he has used to make 63.4% FG this season. But the Badgers frustrated him in the two meetings last year, as Zeller had twice as many fouls (8) as rebounds (4) in the pair of defeats. PF Christian Watford (12.9 PPG, 6.7 RPG) joins him in the post, but with the threat to open up the offense, nailing 1.6 three-pointers per game on a 46.3% clip. Swingman Victor Oladipo (13.8 PPG, 5.9 RPG) has the third-highest FG Pct. in the nation at 68.3%, and is also one of the nation's best defenders with 2.4 SPG (T-22nd in D-I). He is coming off an impressive 20-point, three-steal effort in Saturday's win against Minnesota in which he fouled out. G Jordan Hulls (11.6 PPG, 3.7 APG) is a deadly sharpshooter with 2.6 three-pointers per game, making 53% of his attempts from deep, while 6-foot-7 F Will Sheehey (11.4 PPG) is also a scoring asset despite going scoreless (0-for-3 FG) against Minnesota. Freshman PG Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell (6.6 PPG, 5.3 APG) has been a splendid passer in the early going and is coming off one of his best games of the year, a 13-point, eight-assist performance. In the past four games, he has 23 assists and just six turnovers combined.

Kentucky favored big over Tennessee on Tuesday

                      TENNESSEE VOLUNTERS (8-6)

                      at KENTUCKY WILDCATS (10-5)

                      Rupp Arena – Lexington, KY
                      Tip-off: Tuesday, 7:00 p.m. ET
                      Line: Kentucky -11.5, Total: 135

Looking to turn their season around, preseason SEC favorite Kentucky will host Tennessee on Tuesday night.

The Wildcats are coming off an embarrassing 12-point loss to Texas A&M in which they were favored by 15 points. They still feature a high-powered offense (77.4 PPG) and enter this game as big favorites against a Volunteers squad that is 0-2 SU in the SEC and hasn't won and covered the same game since Dec. 13, going 3-3 SU (1-3-1 ATS) since. Can Kentucky cover the huge spread against its SEC foe?

Junior SG Jordan McRae (13.3 PPG) paces the Volunteer attack, but needs to work on his shooting, making just 32.8% of his threes despite launching 4.6 from beyond the arc per game. He’s been sizzling hot lately though, with three consecutive 20-point efforts, a span in which he has made 26-of-49 FG (53%) and 9-of-25 threes (36%). Six-foot-8 PF Jarnell Stokes (11.2 PPG, 7.7 RPG) is Tennessee’s primary post threat and isn’t that tall but makes up for it with his 270-pound build. He’s coming off a weak six-point effort in the team’s loss to Alabama, and made just 2-of-9 shots in last year's 25-point loss in Lexington. Junior PG Trae Golden (11.1 PPG, 4.1 APG) runs the offense and like McRae has struggled as a shooter, hitting a pithy 24.3% three-pointers. He's currently 3-for-21 from downtown in his past nine games. The other guy to watch out for is 6-foot-9 F Kenny Hall (6.5 PPG, 6.3 RPG), who will be key matching up against the Wildcats low-post threats.

John Calipari’s Wildcats have the potential to win this game on the boards, where they average 39.0 RPG and outrebound teams by +4.3 RPG. Six-foot-10 freshman phenom Nerlens Noel (10.8 PPG, 9.3 RPG) leads that effort and also records an incredible 3.7 BPG, good for 4th in the nation. He’s coming off an impressive 15-point, 11-rebound, seven-block, six-assist and four-steal effort in the team’s loss to the Aggies. Noel and fellow freshman Willie Cauley-Stein (7.6 RPG, 5.9 RPG, 2.1 BPG) form an impressive frontcourt alongside Kyle Wiltjer (10.5 PPG), who starts alongside Noel and adds an outside shot. Freshman SG Archie Goodwin (15.7 PPG, 4.9 RPG, 3.6 APG) paces the Kentucky offense, scoring in double-figures in 13 of his 15 games this season. He is joined on the wing by fellow first-year player, F Alex Poythress (13.4 PPG) who makes 63.2% FG and 41.2% threes. Guards Ryan Harrow (10.1 PPG, 3.4 APG) and Julius Mays (8.5 PPG, 3.3 APG) share some of the ball-handling duties for this Kentucky squad with five double-digit scorers.

Study group: Tuesday’s Top 25 NCB betting notes
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                (20) Notre Dame at St. John’s (+5.5)

The Fighting Irish's 12-game run, which included nine victories in a row at home, abruptly ended Saturday with a 65-58 loss to Connecticut. Notre Dame was outrebounded 30-22 and made just four free throws in matching its season low for scoring and falling short of establishing the program's longest winning streak in nearly 60 years. After recording an upset win at Cincinnati on Jan. 5, the Red Storm have dropped a pair at home, including a 67-51 loss to Georgetown on Saturday. The Red Storm have been held to 58 points or less in three straight contests and are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

Northern Iowa at (10) Creighton (-13.5)

Star forward Doug McDermott scored a season-high 39 points in a 74-52 victory over Missouri State on Friday to boost Creighton’s winning streak to 10, including five straight conference games. Northern Iowa is coming off an 84-53 trouncing of Bradley and the 31-point victory was the school’s largest since joining the Missouri Valley for the 1991-92 campaign. The Panthers also matched a school record by sinking 15 3-point baskets in that contest. The Bluejays are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games overall.

                                (24) Cincinnati at DePaul (+7)

The Blue Demons will be well-rested. They have not played since a 99-78 loss at Connecticut on Jan. 8. Brandon Young scored a career-high 35 points but DePaul offered little resistance on the defensive end and was outrebounded 46-26. The Bearcats rank second nationally with 43.4 rebounds per game. They are third in the country with a total of 267 offensive boards. Cincinnati is 0-5 ATS in the last five meetings.

                                Wisconsin at (2) Indiana (-11)

Two teams with six-game winning streaks battle for first place in the Big Ten when Indiana hosts Wisconsin. Wisconsin is allowing just 50.2 points during its winning streak and only 47.7 during its three Big Ten contests. Indiana has won 18 consecutive home games and has topped 80 points 13 times. The Hoosiers play a vastly different style than Wisconsin and are averaging 87.1 points per game. Indiana is outscoring its opponents 333-166 from the free-throw line and shooting a blistering 51.1 percent from the field. The Badgers are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.
