No. 14 NC State visits Maryland on Wednesday

Coming off an upset of then-No. 1 and undefeated Duke, No. 14 North Carolina State will look to stay hot in the ACC as it travels to College Park for a tilt with Maryland.

The Wolfpack now own the nation’s most efficient offense, hitting 52.8% FG, tops in Division I. That results in an impressive 81.5 PPG (8th in nation) for this offense with two great post scorers. The Terrapins are also strong down low, however, taking in 43.1 RPG (5th in D-I) and will look to avenge their two consecutive losses to Florida State and Miami in this one.

Maryland is as deep as college teams get, featuring 10 players who play more than 10 MPG. Transfer swingman Dez Wells (12.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG) leads the club with 25.4 MPG, and he has thrived in his first year with the Terps. Not only does he make 55.5% FG, but he is coming off one of his best games of the season, an 18-point effort (7-of-11 FG) against Miami. In the past 11 games, he's shooting 61.3% from the floor (57-for-93). The true rising star on the team, though, is 7-foot-1 C Alex Len (13.8 PPG, 8.3 RPG) who is universally seen as an NBA lottery pick and has finally turned his potential into production this year. He’s swatting away 2.2 shots per game, while making 55.6% FG. In his three ACC games he’s averaging 15.7 PPG and 9.3 RPG. Another key guy will be PG Pe’Shon Howard who has been brutally ineffective as a scorer (3.6 PPG on 25.9% FG), but is a savvy passer with 5.2 APG and a 2.7 Ast/TO ratio. He is the main reason the Terrapins are 10th in D-I in assists (17.2 APG), but he hasn’t scored in two straight games, and is 0-for-10 from the floor (0-for-9 threes) against ACC foes this season.

Five double-digit scorers lead the way for this Wolfpack squad that relies heavily on a short rotation of mainly six players. Down low, F C.J. Leslie (16.2 PPG, 7.3 RPG) leads the way and is coming off a huge 25-point performance against Duke. He’s joined by bruiser Richard Howell (12.9 PPG, 10.4 RPG) and he also had a monster day against the Blue Devils, scoring 16 and grabbing 18 boards, his fourth straight game with more than 10 rebounds. Lorenzo Brown (13.0 PPG, 7.1 APG) is the primary distributor for NC State and is coming off two consecutive double-doubles in points and assists (16.5 PPG, 11.5 APG). Six-foot-8 freshman F T.J. Warren (12.3 PPG) has impressed this season with an incredible 67.2% FG (4th in the nation) while fellow first-year G Rodney Purvis (9.8 PPG) is coming into his own, scoring 13.0 PPG (58% FG) in ACC play. But the Terrapins will have to make sure to guard sharp-shooter Scott Wood (12.3 PPG), who is hitting 45.2% of his three-pointers, including 9-of-17 in ACC play.

No. 15 San Diego State tries to run its home win streak to 11 games when Mountain West foe UNLV pays a visit on Wednesday night.

The Rebels are 0-5 ATS in their past five games, losing both of their road trips outright at North Carolina and New Mexico. San Diego State comes into this one having gone 14-1 SU and 7-3 ATS since a season-opening loss to Syracuse on board an aircraft carrier. The only straight-up loss was a one-point defeat on a neutral court in Hawaii on Christmas Day against an Arizona team that had been undefeated until last week. These teams split their season series with a pair of two-point games, and the past five meetings have been decided by a total of 18 points.

UNLV doesn't shoot particularly well (45.0% FG, 106th in nation), but the team scores 77.5 PPG (28th in D-I) with 18.4 APG (3rd in nation) and 42.5 RPG (8th in D-I). The Rebels began MWC play with a loss at New Mexico, and needed overtime to outlast 13.5-point underdog Air Force at home on Saturday. Despite the near loss, many Rebels shined on the offensive end, as SF Anthony Bennett racked up 22 points and 16 boards, PF Mike Moser scored 14 points with 11 rebounds, SG Bryce Dejean-Jones had 18 points in just 22 minutes off the bench, and PG Anthony Marshall dished out 12 assists with just two turnovers. The freshman Bennett is clearly the star of this team with 19.6 PPG (56% FG, 41% 3-pt FG), 9.3 RPG and 1.4 BPG. He has scored at least 10 points in every game this season and has seven double-doubles in his past 10 contests. Moser has been slowed by a dislocated elbow injury this season, but Saturday's game showed that his injury appears to be behind him now. In two games versus SDSU last season, he averaged 14.0 PPG and 10.5 RPG, including a team-high 19 points in a 65-63 home win over the Aztecs last February. Dejean-Jones averages just 9.7 PPG this season, but has 13.0 PPG in his past three contests. Marshall had a strong offensive series versus the Aztecs last season with 15.5 PPG, 7.0 RPG and 4.5 APG.

San Diego State isn't a prolific scoring team, averaging just 72.1 PPG (83rd in D-I), but the Aztecs hold opponents to 59.0 PPG on 37.9% FG for the season. Do-it-all swingman Jamaal Franklin leads the team in minutes (32.3 MPG), points (17.8 PPG), rebounds (10.3 RPG) and assists (3.5 APG). He doesn't shoot particularly well (42.9% FG, 27.8% threes), but he's averaging 20.3 PPG and 12.3 RPG in three games this month, and is coming off his fifth 20-point effort on Saturday, scoring 23 in the overtime win over Colorado State. He also had 19.5 PPG and 9.0 RPG in two meetings with UNLV last season, making a game-winning layup with 0.3 seconds left in a 69-67 home win over the Rebels last January. Senior SG Chase Tapley (15.1 PPG) has always been an accurate shooter, and he currently owns a career-best 3-pt FG Pct (43.7%) to go along with his 47.1% FG clip. He's scored at least 13 points in nine of the past 10 games, chipping in 19 points in Saturday's win. Tapley also scored 16.5 PPG on 50% FG (5-of-10 threes) in two meetings with the Rebels last season. Junior G Xavier Thames is the team's other double-digit scorer with 10.5 PPG, but he's been struggling to score in his past three games, making just 8-of-24 shots. Both Tapley (flu) and Thames (stiff back) were able to overcome injuries on Saturday, and should be much closer to 100 percent on Wednesday.

(15) North Carolina State Wolfpack at Maryland Terrapins (-2)

Ten consecutive victories, the latest over previously unbeaten and top-ranked Duke, have North Carolina State soaring as the Wolfpack travel to Maryland. The Terrapins have scored an average of 54.8 points in losses to the Hurricanes and Florida State, after putting up 94 in their conference opener against Virginia Tech. Maryland leads the ACC in field-goal defense, holding opponents to 35.3 percent shooting and rank last in the conference in turnover margin (-3.94). The Wolfpack are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings.

Richmond Spiders at (13) Butler Bulldogs (-9)

Butler received a huge scare in Saturday's win at Dayton when leading scorer Rotnei Clarke was hurt in a harrowing fall. Clarke escaped serious injury and was diagnosed with a sprained neck, but the Bulldogs will be without him for at least the next two games. Richmond is also dealing with an injury to a key player. Forward Derrick Williams (ankle), the team’s second-leading scorer and No. 2 rebounder, will miss his fourth straight game. The Spiders are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

(17) Michigan State Spartans at Penn State Nittany Lions (+11)

After losing at Minnesota in the Big Ten opener, the Spartans have needed big second halves to pull away from Purdue, Iowa and Nebraska -- all considered to be middle-tier to bottom-half teams in the conference. The starting backcourt of Keith Appling, Gary Harris and Denzel Valentine combined to shoot just 3-for-22 in Sunday's 66-56 win at home against Nebraska. Penn State has lost four straight, averaging just 49.5 points per game in the process. The Nittany Lions are 0-7 ATS in their last seven Wednesday games.

Georgia Bulldogs at (16) Missouri Tigers (-15)

Missouri will be without leading scorer Laurence Bowers, who sprained the MCL in his right knee last week. The inability of the Bulldogs to establish a second consistent scoring threat besides Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a big reason Georgia ranks 318th nationally in scoring (59.5 points). The Bulldogs are facing their second ranked team in eight days; Georgia lost by 33 points at Florida on Jan. 9 and is 1-4 ATS in its last five road games.

(18) Kansas State Wildcats at TCU Horned Frogs (+10)

Scoring could be a grind for both teams when Kansas State travels to TCU for a Big 12 game. The Horned Frogs are 341st out of 345 Division I teams in scoring (55.2), taking another tumble after a 51-40 loss Saturday against Baylor. They're eighth in scoring defense (55.3), however. Kansas State has only one player averaging double figures in scoring; senior guard Rodney McGruder (14.9). He’s been especially hot lately, averaging 19.3 points over the last six games. The Horned Frogs are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following a loss and K-State is 0-5-1 ATS in its last six road games.

(21) New Mexico Lobos at Boise State Broncos (-2.5)

Off to its best start since 1987-88, Boise State looks to knock off its second ranked opponent in as many weeks when the Broncos host New Mexico. The Broncos won their seventh straight game last Wednesday against previously unbeaten Wyoming despite missing four suspended players. Three of them have been reinstated in time to face New Mexico. Leading scorer Derrick Marks and reserves Mikey Thompson and Darrious Hamilton have been reinstated after serving one-game suspensions for violating team rules, but reserve center Kenny Buckner’s suspension has been extended through Jan. 23. The Lobos are 4-1 ATS in their last five road games.

(23) UNLV Runnin' Rebels at (14) San Diego State Aztecs (-4.5)

San Diego State will try to start 3-0 in the Mountain West Conference for a third consecutive season when the Aztecs host UNLV. Both teams feature elite scorers/rebounders. Anthony Bennett, a 6-8 freshman forward for UNLV, averages 19.6 points and 9.3 rebounds. Jamaal Franklin, a 6-5 junior guard, averages 17.8 and 10.3 for San Diego State. The Runnin' Rebels are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.

Plenty of college basketball teams swapped out their head coach this offseason, hoping a change on the sideline would spark a change on the floor.

For some programs, the move has paid off - and not just for the team. Bettors are seeing the benefits of the new coaching. However, other teams are struggling to adapt to new systems and philosophies, dragging bettors down with them.

Here’s a look at three teams thriving ATS and three struggling to cover the spread under their new head coach:

Best new coaches ATS

Donnie Tyndall – Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (13-4 SU, 10-4 ATS)

Tyndall has the Golden Eagles on top of C-USA and is making Southern Miss backers happy after former coach Larry Eustachy, who took the job at Colorado State, posted a 12-18 ATS record last season. The Golden Eagles have been tough away from Hattiesburg, going 5-3 ATS on the road.

Keno Davis – Central Michigan Chippewas (8-8 SU, 10-5 ATS)

Central Michigan lost star recruit Tyler Zeigler to transfer (Pitt) and then canned Zeigler’s dad, head coach Ernie Zeigler, after an 11-21 record (14-16-1 ATS) last season. The Chippewas rolled the dice on Davis, and so far it’s paid off – at least for bettors.

Dave Pilipovich - Air Force Falcons (9-5 SU, 6-3 ATS)

Pilipovich, an assistant under fired head coach Jeff Reynolds, has Air Force contending in the stacked MWC. The Falcons covered versus Florida in December and just missed an upset win over UNLV, losing in OT last weekend. Air Force is one of the better 3-point shooting teams in the country – always music to bettor’s ears.


Worst new coaches ATS

Jerod Haase – UAB Blazers (8-9 SU, 4-10 ATS)

Haase, an assistant at North Carolina, has tried to instill an up-tempo offense at UAB (73.6 points per game) but forgot about the defensive side of the playbook (299th in the country). The Blazers have been good at home (7-1 SU) but dismal on the road (1-6 SU).

Tony Benford - North Texas Mean Green (7-11 SU, 4-9 ATS)

Benford, an assistant at Marquette, inherited a contender in the Sun Belt when Johnny Jones took the job at LSU. However, the Mean Green have fallen short of those expectations under their new head coach. Injuries and the disappointing play of star forward Tony Mitchell is to blame.

Jay Spoonhour - Eastern Illinois Panthers (3-15 SU, 4-9 ATS)

The Panthers have lost 11 straight heading into Thursday’s date with OVC power Murray State, covering the spread in two of the nine lined games during that span. Spoonhour hasn’t had it easy in Charleston, inheriting no starters and having to rely on a slew of new players. That’s the big reason EIU is among the worst offensive teams in the country - 56.7 points per game

(5) Michigan Wolverines at (12) Minnesota Golden Gophers (-3)

Both the Wolverines and Golden Gophers are coming off their first losses in league play. Michigan was the last unbeaten team in the country and had the inside track on gaining the No. 1 ranking before it suffered a 56-53 setback at Ohio State on Sunday, producing its worst offensive output since last Jan. 29, also at the Buckeyes. The Wolverines averaged 90.2 points over a five-game stretch before producing 62 against Nebraska and 53 against Ohio State. Despite a furious second-half rally that nearly erased a 23-point halftime deficit, Minnesota lost at Indiana on Saturday, 88-81. Michigan is Minnesota's fourth ranked opponent in the last five games. The Golden Gophers are 8-0 ATS in their last eight games vs. Big Ten opponents.

(9) Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (+9.5)

Texas A&M, hot off an outstanding performance at Kentucky last Saturday, takes a four-game win streak into its first contest against a ranked team. Elston Turner was named National Player of the Week after his 40-point explosion, including six 3-pointers, in the 83-71 victory against Kentucky. The senior guard will have to come up with another big effort against the Gators, who allow an average of 52 points and 36.5 percent shooting from the field. Florida has also won four straight, winning its first two league games by 33 and 22 points despite injury problems. Second-leading scorer Mike Rosario, who missed the last game with an ankle sprain, is expected to return to the lineup. The Aggies are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 home games.

Northwestern Wildcats at (22) Illinois Fighting Illini (-10.5)

Illinois started the season with 12 consecutive victories but has now lost four of six games. The 1-3 start in Big Ten play includes back-to-back thumpings by Minnesota (17 points) and Wisconsin (23). Northwestern is also is off to a 1-3 conference start and those losses have been by an average of 22 points. UCLA will try to start 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2003-04 when the Bruins host Oregon State. Oregon State will be without forward Eric Moreland for this one. Moreland is the sixth-leading rebounder in the nation (11.1) and will miss his third straight game for violating team rules. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at (3) Duke Blue Devils (-16.5)

Duke looks to rebound from its first loss of the season when Georgia Tech visits. The Blue Devils were without third-leading scorer Ryan Kelly (foot) in the 84-76 loss at North Carolina State last Saturday and second-leading scorer Seth Curry sprained his ankle late in the contest. Kelly is out indefinitely with a foot injury and Curry is expected to return against Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets shoot 42.1 percent from the field and average 65.5 points. They can be difficult to defend at times with four players averaging between 11 and nine points. Duke is 1-7 ATS in its last eight vs. ACC foes.

St. Joseph’s Hawks at (19) VCU Rams (-10)

The Rams have won 11 straight behind an aggressive defense. VCU hasn't allowed an opponent to score more than 70 points this season and leads the country in turnover margin (plus-8.6) and steals (13.2) - a stat the Rams also led last season. The Rams have nine double-digit victories during their current 11-game win streak and are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games.

The Bulldogs have won seven consecutive games and are coming off an 83-78 conference-showdown victory over Saint Mary’s. Junior forward Kelly Olynyk scored 31 points against Saint Mary’s to follow up a 33-point outing against Santa Clara. Portland is playing at home for the first time since Dec. 29 and is 6-2 on its home floor. The Pilots notched a 68-64 road win over Loyola Marymount last Saturday but have lost 18 straight games against Gonzaga.
