    Wednesday Tips

    November 6, 2012

The Wednesday NBA card is loaded with 13 games to wager on, including a handful of contests with plenty of interest. We'll take a look at four games, as the Bucks and Spurs look to stay unbeaten, while the Lakers and Jazz try to get on track. The night begins in South Florida with the Heat attempting to close out their homestand at a perfect 3-0.

Nets at Heat - 7:35 PM EST

For the exception of a hiccup at New York, Miami's offense has dominated in its three victories, averaging 121 points per game. The Heat hits the road for six games following Wednesday's contest against Brooklyn, who squandered a 22-point lead in Monday's home loss to Minnesota as 7 ½-point favorites.

Miami ran Phoenix out on Monday, 124-99 as 13-point 'chalk,' while hitting the 'over' for the third time in three games at the American Airlines Arena. The Heat drilled 15 three-pointers, as LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh combined to score 63 points. The addition of Ray Allen off the bench has paid huge dividends early, as the former Celtic is averaging 15 points per game, while tallying 38 points in the wins over the Nuggets and Suns.

The Nets have played just two games so far with their opener against the Knicks postponed due to the effects of Hurricane Sandy. Brooklyn picked up a victory in its first game against Toronto, 107-100 to cash as 5 ½-point favorites, but stumbled in its quest for a second win on Monday. The Nets led the Wolves by 15 at the half and even 22 in the third quarter, but that lead evaporated quickly as Brooklyn would score just 10 points in the final quarter to lose, 107-96.

Grizzlies at Bucks - 8:05 PM EST

Milwaukee stunned Boston in its opener as seven-point road favorites, while needing a Brandon Jennings' buzzer-beating three-pointer to escape Cleveland to improve to 2-0. Although the Bucks didn't cover against the Cavs as seven-point 'chalk,' Scott Skiles' club looks for a 3-0 start when the Grizzlies invade the BMO Harris Bradley Center on Wednesday.

Memphis also attempts to win its third consecutive contest following victories over Golden State and Utah by nine points or more. The Grizzlies overcame an earlier 12-point deficit to beat the Jazz on Monday as five-point favorites, 103-94, as Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph combined to score 38 points. Memphis has taken each of the last three meetings against Milwaukee, including a 99-95 triumph in Wisconsin this past March as 2 ½-point 'dogs.

The Bucks nearly had a letdown on Saturday against the Cavs, but held off Cleveland, 105-102. Mike Dunleavy came off the bench to score 29 points for the Bucks, while Milwaukee shot 52% from the field. Last season, the Bucks put together a 9-10 SU and 7-12 ATS record at home off a victory, but Milwaukee compiled a strong 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS mark at the Bradley Center off a home win.

Lakers at Jazz - 9:05 PM EST

Both Los Angeles and Utah have started 1-3 out of the gate, as the two teams meet up in Salt Lake City on Wednesday. The Jazz returns home following a disappointing 0-3 road swing with losses at New Orleans, San Antonio, and Memphis, while failing to cover in all three defeats. The Lakers go for their second straight victory after breaking through the win column on Sunday night against the Pistons, 108-79 as 7 ½-point favorites.

Los Angeles is still without point guard Steve Nash (fibula), but jumped on Detroit in the first quarter to take a 34-13 advantage after 12 minutes. Dwight Howard led the Lakers with 28 points, while L.A. limited the Pistons to just 35% shooting from the floor. The Lakers lost their lone game away from Staples Center, falling at Portland, 116-106, as Los Angeles lost nine of 25 in the road underdog role last season.

Utah's best performance came in its only home contest, dominating an unrested Dallas squad, 113-94 on Halloween night as 8 ½-point favorites. Since then, the Jazz has reached the 100-point mark only once in three games, while wrapping up their road trip with a 103-94 defeat at Memphis. The Lakers and Jazz split four meetings last season with each team winning once at home and once on the road.

Spurs at Clippers - 10:30 PM EST

San Antonio swept Los Angeles in the second round of last season's Western Conference playoffs, as the Spurs try to reach 5-0 for the first time in franchise history. The Spurs cruised past the Jazz and Pacers by double-digits to finish off their homestand at 3-0, while the defense has allowed 95 points or less three times through four games.

The Clippers started the season at 2-0 after beating the Grizzlies and Lakers, but were knocked off as heavy favorites in losses to the Warriors and Cavaliers. Vinny Del Negro's club has broken the 100-point mark in all four games, while the defense has given up at least 108 points in each of their two defeats. The Cavs knocked down 14 three-pointers, as Cleveland outscored Los Angeles in three of the four quarters.

The Spurs grabbed six of seven meetings from the Clippers last season, including a perfect 3-0 mark at Staples Center.

Bowling Green won last five games, covered last four, scoring a defensive TD in each of last three games; they're 1-2 as underdogs this year. Favorites covered last four Bowling Green games- they're only team in country where all their games stayed under (8-0) the total. MAC home favorites are 13-8 vs spread in conference play.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
12 things bettors must know for Bowling Green-Ohio
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bowling Green Falcons at Ohio Bobcats (-3, 49)

                Time: 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2
Weather: 28 degrees with a 10 percent chance of rain and 6 mph winds.

                - The line: Opened at Ohio -3.5 at most spots and -4 at the Las Vegas Hotel. Bowling Green was bet down to a 3-point fave - not much of a surprise considering BG has been a bit of a darling for sharps this year.

                - The winner of this game will control its own destiny in the MAC East. They both have one loss in MAC play and both will play division leader Kent State in their remaining two games.

                - Ohio is playing its third game in 12 days. Bowling Green is coming off a bye.

                - Bowling Green is the most prolific under team in the nation for bettors. The Falcons played under in all eight games in which they saw a posted total this season.

                - Bowling Green has covered the spread in five straight games. None of those opponents scored more than 12 points.

                - This is Senior Day and a "Blackout Game" for Ohio, where students are asked to wear black to the game. It's the second straight nationally televised weekday game for Ohio. They beat EMU last week to halt a four-game ATS losing streak.

                - The Falcons rank 16th or better in the nation in six key defensive categories, including total defense (eighth), scoring defense (ninth) and sacks (16th).

                - Ohio head coach Frank Solich felt defenses were catching on to his team's systems and said he was going to mix up his playbook last week following the Bobcats' first loss of the season to Miami Ohio on Oct. 27. He did just that. Ryan Boykins saw a lot more opportunities at tailback than usual and had his best game of the season with 128 yards and a touchdown. It opened up the passing game - along with some designed QB runs - and receiver Donte Foster had his best game of the season with 164 yards and two TDs.

                - Bobcats junior QB Tyler Tettleton is just 83 yards shy from becoming Ohio's career passing yards leader. He's been efficient in a typical Solich offense that likes to run the option. He has 15 TDs passing and three more rushing against just two INTs. He also has one receiving TD.

                - Senior defensive tackle Chris Jones is a beast on the defensive line for Bowling Green. He has 16 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks.

                - Neither team likes to give up the football. Ohio ranks second in the nation with just five turnovers lost and Bowling Green ranks 18th with 11.

                - Bowling Green's offense has stalled the last two weeks - 282 yards against terrible Massachusetts and 356 yards against mediocre Eastern Michigan. That said head coach Dave Clawson was happy with the EMU game: “I love that we held the ball for almost 35 minutes [against Eastern Michigan],” he told the Toledo Blade. “I love that, with nine minutes, 10 seconds left in that game, our offense kept the ball for the rest of the game."

                    Armadillo's Write-Up

                    Week 11

                    Thursday's games
This is first regular season Florida State-Virginia Tech game since 2008; Hokies (-3.5) beat FSU 44-33 in ACC title game two years ago, but this is worst season Tech has had in over a decade, losing four of its last five games, with seven turnovers, 29 points in last two. Over last 11 years, Tech is 3-0 vs spread when a home dog. Since '06, Florida State is 8-11 as road favorites, 5-5 under Fisher, 0-3 this year; all ix of their I-A wins are by 12+ points; they even had 16-0 halftime lead in their only loss, at NC State. Seminoles outscored last three foes 57-10 in second half. ACC home underdogs are 7-7 vs spread in conference play. Four of last five Seminole games stayed under the total.

UL-Monroe QB Browning left last week's game with some kind of leg injury (ULM ain't saying), never returned, isn't listed on depth chart for this game, so assume he is out, big blow for Warhawk squad headed for its winning season at I-A level. ULM is 4-0 vs spread on road this year, 4-0 as an underdog with two SU wins- they won SU at Arkansas, but were just 2-11 in 3rd down last week with Browning sitting out most of game. ASU is 0-3 as home favorite this year, after being 7-2 last couple seasons; they've won last four games (3-1 vs spread), scoring 39.3 ppg. Sun Belt home favorites are 3-14 vs spread in conference play this year. Seven of nine ULM games this season went over the total.

Eight things bettors should know about UL Monroe-Arkansas State
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Louisiana Monroe Warhawks at Arkansas State Red Wolves (-6.5, 59)

                    Time: 7 p.m. ET on ESPN U

The line: Arkansas St. opened as a 6-point favorite, but bettors quickly moved the line up to 6.5 and 7 at a couple of books.

                    - Whoever wins this game will control its own destiny in the Sun Belt. UL Monroe and Arkansas State are both in a three-way tie atop the conference with Middle Tennessee but UL Monroe already beat the Blue Raiders and Arkansas State faces them in the last game of the season.

                    - The Warhawks are 4-0 against the spread on the road and the Red Wolves are 1-3 ATS at home.

                    - Louisiana Monroe lost its starting quarterback and star Kolton Browning last game against Louisiana Lafayette. Browning led the conference in all purpose yards heading into last week’s game. It’s an unspecified leg injury but he won’t be back this week. Cody Wells was so-so filling in with 209 passing yards and two TDs last week, but he threw two picks and the Warhawks lost their first Sun Belt game 40-24.

                    - Depth is a serious issue for ULM right now. “We have seven very good players on the sideline with me right now (due to injuries),” said head coach Todd Berry at his weekly press conference. “I’m not making excuses. I think our guys are stepping up pretty well, but our lack of depth is showing right now. It showed in that game.” Berry went on to say the Warhawks had an “inability to get ourselves off the field defensively” against ULL and “we didn’t sustain some drives offensively, especially with the changes that were going on.”

                    - Warhawks wide receiver Brent Leonard leads the Sun Belt in receiving.

                    - Arkansas State has the third-best pass efficiency defense in the Sun Belt. UL Monroe nipped the best pass efficiency defense, 43-42, in OT (Western Kentucky) and lost to the second best (ULL).

                    - The Red Wolves are terrible on special teams. They are the worst in the Sun Belt in kickoff returns (18.33 yard average) and net punting (30.7 yard average).

                    - The Warhawks started the season 5-0 ATS and since that time are 1-3 against the spread.

Florida State at Virginia Tech: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida State Seminoles at Virginia Tech Hokies (+14.5, 51.5)

Florida State is homing in on its first ACC Atlantic Division title in seven years. Standing in the sixth-ranked Seminoles' way next is a team they’ve grown accustomed to fighting with for conference supremacy - at least up until this season. The well-rested Seminoles travel to Blacksburg on Thursday night to face struggling rival Virginia Tech in a contest loaded with ACC title game implications.

Florida State throttled Duke 48-7 prior to taking a week off. Now, the Seminoles need to win their final two conference games to secure a berth in the ACC championship game and a shot at their first BCS bowl appearance since 2005. Meanwhile, Virginia Tech’s chances at reaching the ACC title game were dealt a blow with an embarrassing 30-12 loss to Miami last Thursday. This is only the third regular-season ACC contest between the teams. In the most recent meeting, Virginia Tech prevailed 44-33 in the 2010 ACC championship game.

                    TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Florida State opened at -13 and has been bet up to -14.5. The total is set at 51.5.

WEATHER: The forecast is calling for clear skies and temperatures in the mid 30s. Winds are expected to blow NW at 9 mph.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (8-1, 5-1 ACC, 3-5 ATS): The Seminoles are the only team in the nation ranked in the top 10 in offense (seventh, 524.5 yards per game) and defense (first, 227.1). Florida State's explosive offense scored on the third play from scrimmage against Duke as E.J. Manuel hit Rashad Greene for a 71-yard touchdown and led 31-0 after 20 minutes. Devonta Freeman and sophomore James Wilder Jr., the duo helping replace Chris Thompson (torn ACL), combined for 174 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries. Meanwhile, the defense, led by All-American candidate DT Bjoern Werner (eight sacks on the season), allowed only 232 yards.

ABOUT VIRGINIA TECH (4-5, 2-3 ACC, 2-7 ATS): The Hokies have lost two straight and four of their last five after a forgettable showing against Miami. Virginia Tech outgained Miami by nearly 100 yards (421-347) and ran 24 more plays (82-58), but lost because it managed only two field goals in four red zone trips. Even the special teams, a staple of Frank Beamer-coached squads, were outplayed. Miami blocked a punt, which led to a score. Offensively, quarterback Logan Thomas (19-of-37, 199 yards, two interceptions versus Miami) has regressed and, as a result, the Hokies are a middling 69th in scoring offense (27.1 points) and 91st in turnover margin (minus-.56).

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings.
                    * Home team is 5-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
                    * Favorite is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

                    EXTRA POINTS:

                    1. Said Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher, on playing in Blacksburg: “It’s a great challenge. That’s a very tough environment, hostile environment.” Florida State lost during its only trip there in 2007.

                    2. The Hokies need to win two of their final three games to avoid missing out on a bowl game for the first time in 20 years.

                    3. The Seminoles, who beat Virginia Tech for the 2000 national title, also knocked off the Hokies in the first ACC title game in 2005.

Florida State Visits Virginia Tech On Thursday Night

Florida State Seminoles at Virginia Tech Hokies

                      College Football Betting Preview

                      Date: 11/8/2012 at 7:30 p.m. (ET)

                      Opening Lines: FSU -13, O/U 51½

                      Television: ESPN

Florida State Seminoles: Jimbo Fisher and the 'Noles (8-1 straight-up, 4-5 against the spread) can all but lock up the ACC Atlantic Division with a win a Blacksburg on Thursday. They've had some extra time to prepare for this big road game after blasting Duke in Week 9 at home, 48-7, a game in which FSU built an insurmountable 31-0 lead less than four minutes into the second quarter. Devonta Freeman rushed for more than 100 yards filling in for Chris Thompson, who was lost for the season with a knee injury a week earlier (click to check latest college football injury report). All three of Florida State's road games this season have finished below the total, and the Seminoles have yet to cover the spread away from Tallahassee. This is just the third regular season meeting between the schools since Va Tech joined the ACC while they have also met twice for the conference championship.

Virginia Tech Hokies: A favorite in the ACC to begin the season, Virginia Tech (4-5 SU, 2-7 ATS) now needs to win its final three games just to get six victories over FBS schools and become bowl eligible. The Hokies suffered their fourth loss in five games, both SU and ATS, in a 30-12 setback at Miami (FL) last Thursday when they were laying 1½-points on the road. Va Tech ruled the boxscore with a 421-347 yardage edge on offense and a nearly nine-minute advantage in time of possession but could not overcome three turnovers that ultimately spelled defeat. Junior quarterback Logan Thomas and the rest of the offense have their work cut out for them against the nation's No. 1 ranked defense as FSU is allowing just over 227 yards per game. All four meetings as conference opponents have finished above the total, including the 2010 ACC Championship that went to Va Tech by a 44-33 count.

FSU looks to add to Va. Tech slump on Thursday

                        FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES (8-1)
                        at VIRGINIA TECH HOKIES (4-5)

                        Kickoff: Thursday, 7:30 p.m. EDT
Line: Florida State -14, Total: 51.5

Virginia Tech looks for a signature victory during a miserable season when it hosts No. 10 Florida State on Thursday night.

These teams last met in the 2010 ACC Championship when Virginia Tech won 44-33. That was just the second series loss (13-2 SU) for Florida State since 1976. This season, the Seminoles are 0-3 ATS on the road, scoring just 26.3 PPG, compared to 54.0 PPG in six home games. Virginia Tech has dropped four of five (SU and ATS), but all four losses have been on the road, including a 30-12 thrashing at Miami last Thursday. But since losing to James Madison in 2010, the Hokies are 15-1 SU (8-8 ATS) in their past 16 home games.

Can the Hokies pull off the upset over heavily-favored FSU? For the answer, connect to The Platinum Sheet for all the ******* Experts picks for every key college football game throughout the 2012 season.

Seminoles QB EJ Manuel had a strong outing when he lost to Va. Tech in the conference title game two years ago, completing 23-of-31 passes for 288 yards and 1 TD, but also throwing a pair of interceptions. He currently ranks second in the nation in passing efficiency, completing 70% of his passes for 2,315 yards (10.1 YPA), 16 TD and 4 INT. In last week's 48-7 shellacking of Duke, he threw for 282 yards and 2 TD despite completing just eight passes. The running game suffered a major loss two weeks ago when top RB Chris Thompson suffered a season-ending knee injury. However, FSU was still able to gallop for 261 yards against the Blue Devils, led by Devonta Freeman's 104 rushing yards (8.7 YPC) and 2 TD with James Wilder Jr. adding 70 yards and another score. The 'Noles lead the country in total defense (227 YPG allowed) while ranking among the top-four FBS schools in scoring defense (12.0 PPG), rushing defense (73 YPG) and passing defense (154 YPG). Florida State also has a great return game, placing among the top-10 in the nation in both kickoff returns (28.8 average) and punt returns (16.0 average).

Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas has not faced FSU in his career, and considering how poorly he's played lately (12 INT in past seven games), this is not a good matchup for him. Despite the miscues, Thomas has topped 300 total yards in four straight weeks, rushing for 223 yards and 2 TD over the past two contests. For the Hokies to hang around in this game, either or both of RBs Michael Holmes (282 rush yds, 4 TD) and J.C. Coleman (361 yds, 2 TD) need to power through the few holes they'll get against FSU's tough defense. Virginia Tech's defense is solid in both total defense (368 YPG) and scoring defense (24.7 PPG), especially at home where the Hokies have allowed just 44 points over four games. They need to take more risks to create turnovers though, as they have just five takeaways in their five losses this season.

Stanford hosts Oregon St. in clash of top-15 teams

                            OREGON STATE BEAVERS (7-1)
                            at STANFORD CARDINAL (7-2)

                            Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EDT
                            Line: Stanford -4, Total: 44.5

A key Pac-12 showdown takes place Saturday afternoon when No. 14 hosts No. 11 Oregon State.

These teams have split the past eight meetings 4-4 (SU and ATS), but Stanford pounded Oregon State 38-0 and 38-13 in the past two matchups. OSU ranks fifth in the nation in rushing defense (92 YPG), but the Cardinal lead FBS with 58 rushing YPG allowed on 1.98 YPC. Beavers QB Cody Vaz threw for 267 yards and 3 TD in last week’s 36-26 home win, while Stanford pitched a 48-0 shutout in Colorado. The Beavers are 19-11 ATS on the road since 2008, but the Cardinal are 17-1 SU at home over the past three seasons.

Who will prevail in this Pac-12 matchup? For the answer, connect to The Platinum Sheet for all the ******* Experts picks for every key college football game throughout the 2012 season.

Vaz has thrown 7 TD with just one pick in 102 attempts this season, but he'll be asked to throw the football 30-to-40 times against Stanford's subpar pass defense allowing 268 passing YPG (107th in FBS). His top targets will be sophomore QB Brandin Cooks (50 rec, 906 yds, 4 TD) and senior WR Markus Wheaton (54 rec, 787 yds, 8 TD) who has 90+ receiving yards in five of his past seven games. Wheaton totaled 89 total yards in last year's loss to the Cardinal. Considering the Beavers rank 108th in FBS in rushing offense (115 YPG), they will probably not call too many running plays, especially against Stanford's rushing defense that has allowed a total of minus-34 rushing yards during its three-game win streak. Vaz will also have to get rid of the ball quickly, as the Cardinal also lead the nation in both sacks (4.3 per game) and Tackles for Loss (9.2 per game). He'll also have to be wary of Stanford safety Ed Reynolds, who has returned three interceptions for touchdowns this year, including two in the past two games.

Stanford redshirt freshman QB Kevin Hogan will get his first collegiate start on Saturday. He replaced the ineffective Josh Nunes last week and completed 18-of-23 passes for 184 yards, 2 TD and 0 INT in the win over Colorado. But he'll be facing a much tougher defense on Saturday, as the Beavers have allowed just 519 passing yards (5.2 YPA) in the past three weeks combined. The Cardinal will turn to RB Stepfan Taylor (947 rush yds, 8 TD), who has 230 yards on just 30 carries (7.7 YPC) and 1 TD in three career games versus the Beavers. But this OSU run-stop unit has been outstanding, allowing the fifth-fewest rushing yards in the nation (92 rush YPG), a number that was worsened with last week's season-high 150 yards allowed to Arizona State's ground game.

No. 1 Alabama hosts No. 15 Texas A&M Saturday

                              TEXAS A&M AGGIES (7-2)
                              at ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (9-0)

                              Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EDT
                              Line: Alabama -14, Total: 56.5

No. 1 Alabama seeks its 10th win this season when it faces No. 15 Texas A&M on Saturday.

These schools have met just four times (twice in the Cotton Bowl) with Alabama going 3-1 SU with a lopsided 30-10 win in the most recent matchup in 1988. Texas A&M is coming off a 38-13 blowout win at Mississippi State and has 52.3 PPG in its seven SU victories this year. Its two losses were to Florida and LSU, the same team the Tide eked out a victory against last week, prevailing with a game-winning TD drive in the final minute. Alabama is just 1-3 ATS at home this year despite outscoring visitors 146 to 28 (scoring margin of 29.5 PPG).

Will Alabama win comfortably over Texas A&M on Saturday? For the answer, connect to The Platinum Sheet for all the ******* Experts picks for every key college football game throughout the 2012 season.

Texas A&M freshman QB Johnny Manziel ranks second in the nation in total offense with 383 YPG. He's thrown for 16 TD and just 6 INT while rushing for another 15 scores, including eight over the past four games. He has totaled an incredible 24 TD in five road games this year (7 TD at home). Top RB Ben Malena has also been strong in SEC road contests, rushing for 317 yards (7.5 YPC) and 3 TD in three conference road tilts. The Aggies have been a bit turnover-prone (6 TO at Ole Miss, 5 TO vs. LSU), but they have just one miscue over the past two weeks (wins at Auburn and Mississippi State), piling up 101 points and 1,364 yards of offense (682 per game). Defensively, the Aggies have been much more sound since allowing Louisiana Tech to hang 57 points on them. In the three games since, A&M opponents have just 19.3 PPG and 320 total YPG, lowering its season numbers to 21.0 PPG and 377 total YPG.

Alabama QB AJ McCarron had a poor showing against LSU (14-of-27, 165 yds), but he came up big on the game-winning drive capped off by his 19th TD pass of the season. He still hasn't thrown a single interception all year despite 204 pass attempts. Another big reason for Alabama's success has been freshman RB T.J. Yeldon, who has been especially outstanding in the past four games, rushing for 433 yards (8.0 YPC) and six touchdowns. He also caught the game-winning TD pass last week. RB Eddie Lacy has also had a strong season, rushing for 679 yards (5.7 YPC), including 83 in the last game. Defensively, Alabama still leads the nation in scoring defense (9.1 PPG), but fell to second in total defense (229 YPG) after allowing a season-high 435 yards (296 passing) to LSU. Considering how potent Kevin Sumlin's offense is at A&M (560 YPG, 5th in nation), this could be a big problem for the Tide. Alabama ranks fourth in FBS in turnover margin (+1.7 TO per game), but did not force any LSU miscues last week.

Mississippi State seeks rare win at LSU Saturday

No. 7 LSU looks to bounce-back from a rare home loss when it faces a team it has dominated in recent years, No. 21 Mississippi State.

LSU has not lost a home game to Mississippi State since 1991 and has won 12 straight SU (9-3 ATS) overall in this series, allowing seven points or less in seven of these victories, including each of the past two seasons (29-7 and 19-6 wins). The Bulldogs have been crushed in the past two weeks by Alabama (38-7) and Texas A&M (38-13), while the Tigers had the No. 1 Tide down before allowing a game-winning TD drive with 0:51 left to play.

Mississippi State's offense has done very little in the past two weeks, scoring just 20 points with a mere 145 rushing yards (3.0 YPC). Considering how great LSU's run-stop unit has been (103 YPG, 12th in nation), this meager rushing output isn't expected to make a significant jump. That leaves it up to QB Tyler Russell to keep his team in this game by throwing the football. He's in the midst of a pretty strong season with 1,954 passing yards (7.4 YPA), 16 TD and just 3 INT, but this is not a good matchup for him. The last time he visited Baton Rouge two years ago, he tossed three interceptions in just 10 pass attempts. And as good as LSU's rushing defense is, the passing defense is even better, ranking second in FBS with just 150 passing YPG allowed. Although Mississippi State has committed five turnovers in its past two road games, it has one giveaway or less in the other seven games it has played this year, and LSU thrives on stripping the football. If MSU doesn't turn the ball over, it has a shot to hang around in this one.

LSU QB Zach Mettenberger threw for 298 yards versus ‘Bama’s top-ranked defense, which was actually a season-high for him. But the Tigers are much better running the football, as their 201 rushing YPG ranks third in the SEC. Freshman Jeremy Hill was the workhorse last week with 107 yards on 29 carries (3.7 YPC), marking his third straight 100-yard game. But if his lower-body injury sustained last week limits him on Saturday, both Michael Ford (370 rush yds, 5.9 YPC) and Spencer Ware (268 rush yds, 3.9 YPC) are capable backs. Considering Mississippi State just allowed 361 rushing yards (6.2 YPC) to Texas A&M last week, expect a heavy dosage of carries from LSU's ground game. Defensively, the Tigers have forced a whopping 23 turnovers this season, with multiple takeaways in each of the past seven games.
