              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bank shots: NBA betting news and notes
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Each week, we look back on the NBA betting scene and give you the best –and worst – basketball bets, as well as some spots to keep an eye on with the upcoming schedule.

For the week of Nov. 18-24

              Hottest ATS team

Sacramento Kings – This week: 3-1 ATS, Season: 4-8-1 ATS

The Kings are riding a 3-0 ATS run that includes impressive covers against the Lakers and Utah (twice). Sacramento began the season ice-cold ATS, covering just once in its first ten games. But the offense has come alive, posting a number above the century mark during the impressive run. The Kings host Minnesota and Indiana next week before a Saturday date in Los Angeles with the Clippers.

              Coldest ATS team

Minnesota Timberwolves – This week: 0-3 ATS, Season: 6-6 ATS

The Timberwolves have dropped five straight games, failing to cover in the process. Minnesota covered in six of its first seven contests to begin the campaign without star forward Kevin Love in the lineup, who was out due to injury. The T-Wolves finish up a west-coast swing next week in Sacramento and Los Angeles before heading back home for a date with the Bucks.

              Hottest over bet

Oklahoma City Thunder – This week: 4-0 over, Season: 8-6 O/U

After playing under the total in four its first five games, Oklahoma City has played over the number in five straight thanks to its exploding offense. The Thunder have averaged a whopping 112.4 points per game during the over streak. Oklahoma City looks to keep pouring in the buckets during a three-game homestand to start next week when it welcomes the Bobcats, Rockets and Jazz.

              Hottest under bet

Detroit Pistons – This week: 3-0 under, Season: 5-8 O/U

The Pistons are showing signs of life, posting victories in two of their last three games. They’ve been doing it with a defense that has allowed only 82.3 points per game over those three games. Combine that with an offense that ranks 25th in the league at 92.2 points per game, and you have a recipe for a decent under play. Detroit visits the Knicks on Sunday before returning home to host two Western Conference opponents - the Blazers and Suns.

              Scouting the schedule

-After a home date with the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, the Toronto Raptors hit the road for seven of their next eight contests. The Raptors are 4-4 ATS and 5-3 O/U on the road this season.

-The Chicago Bulls return home on Monday for a four-game homestand after posting a 2-3 record on a five-game road swing. The Bulls welcome the Bucks, Mavs, Sixers and Pacers. Chicago has posted wins in its last meetings with all four teams, while playing under the total in those games in the process.

Knicks at Nets: What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Knicks at Brooklyn Nets (+1.5)

Originally scheduled as a season-opening clash between new neighbors, the first meeting of the New York Knicks and the relocated Brooklyn Nets has blown into a matchup of the top two teams in the Atlantic Division. The long-awaited meeting was postponed Nov. 1 because of Superstorm Sandy, but it will carry even more weight on Monday. The Knicks snapped a two-game losing streak with a 121-100 home win over Detroit on Sunday to maintain their top spot in the division.

Brooklyn was sluggish for three quarters Sunday before pulling away for a 98-85 home win over Portland. The Nets have won five straight and six of their first seven games at Barclays Center - the franchise's best start at home since winning 18 of its first 19 in the 2002-03 season - and they sit just a game behind the Knicks for the best record in the division and the second-best mark in the Eastern Conference.

                        TV: 7 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE KNICKS (9-3, 9-3 ATS): New York has four players averaging double-digit scoring led by Brooklyn native Carmelo Anthony (25.6 points, 6.6 rebounds). Point guard Raymond Felton (15.7 points, 7.3 assists), key reserve J.R. Smith (15.5 points, 5.5 rebounds) and center Tyson Chandler (10.3 points, 8.5 rebounds) also are putting up big numbers, and veterans Rasheed Wallace (8.2 points, 4.1 rebounds) and Jason Kidd (8.0 points, 3.4 assists) are giving the Knicks good minutes. New York is still without Amar'e Stoudemire, who had left knee surgery on Oct. 31 and was expected to miss 6-8 weeks.

ABOUT THE NETS (8-4, 7-3-2 ATS): Brooklyn has built its foundation around point guard Deron Williams (16.8 points, 8.5 assists) and complemented him with a nice inside-outside duo in 7-foot center Brook Lopez (19.0 points, 6.2 rebounds) and swingman Joe Johnson (15.8 points, 3.7 assists). Johnson led the team with 21 points against Portland. He and Lopez each have scored in double digits in nine straight and 11 of 12 this season. Forward Kris Humphries' numbers are down a bit this year - he's averaging 8.4 points and 8.9 rebounds - but he posted his fourth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds Sunday.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Knicks are 7-1-1 ATS in the last nine road meetings with Nets.
                        * Knicks are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                        * Under is 10-4 in the last 14 meetings.
                        * Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
                        * Road team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

                        BUZZER BEATERS:

                        1. Brooklyn is 4-0 when scoring at least 100 points. The Knicks have allowed triple digits in five of their past seven games, including three losses.

                        2. Anthony has led the Knicks in scoring in 11 of their 12 games, including a team-best 29 points in Sunday's win.

                        3. The Nets are 3-0 when holding opponents under 80 points and 7-1 when allowing 100 points or fewer. New York has topped 100 in four straight games and nine of 12 overall.

Monday Night Football: Panthers at Eagles
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Carolina Panthers at Philadelphia Eagles (2.5, 40.5)

Two teams with lofty aspirations at the onset of the season will meet on Monday night with little on the line - aside from the potential employment of their respective head coaches. The Philadelphia Eagles will look to snap their six-game losing skid when they welcome the Carolina Panthers to the City of Brotherly Love. Long-time coach Andy Reid has been taken to task in the local newspapers and sports talk shows after the Eagles went through the motions in a 31-6 loss to NFC East-rival Washington on Sunday.

Carolina squandered an 11-point lead with five minutes remaining in regulation en route to a 27-21 overtime loss to NFC South rival Tampa Bay. The loss prompted many in the local media to pepper coach Ron Rivera with questions about his job security. With former general manager Marty Hurney getting the boot earlier in the season, Rivera will likely need a strong finish to improve his standing.

                              LINE: Panthers -2.5 O/U: 40.5

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the high-30s with partly cloudy skies. Winds will blow out of the west at 5 mph.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS (2-8): Cam Newton has come under fire during his sophomore season - both for his performance and his perceived indifference to it all. The former Heisman Trophy winner is struggling, but could find the waters smooth against a battered Eagles pass defense. Newton has formed a nice bond with tight end Greg Olsen, who has scored in two of his last three games versus Philadelphia.

ABOUT THE EAGLES (3-7): With the outcome of last Sunday's game no longer in doubt, LeSean McCoy carried the ball in the waning moments and suffered a concussion that could sideline him versus the Panthers. McCoy and quarterback Michael Vick have yet to practice this week and will likely watch rookies Bryce Brown and Nick Foles continue in their place. Foles tossed interceptions on his first two possessions versus Washington and the game quickly unraveled.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Over is 6-1-1 in Eagles’ last eight home games.
                              * Over is 4-1-1 in Eagles' last six Monday games.
                              * Panthers are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.
                              * Eagles are 0-5 ATS in their last five games overall.

                              EXTRA POINTS:

                              1. Rivera was a linebackers coach under Reid in Philadelphia from 1999-2003. In addition, Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott held the same post with the Eagles after Jim Johnson passed away in 2009.

                              2. Philadelphia has defeated Carolina in three straight since falling to the Panthers in the 2004 NFC Championship game.

                              3. Should McCoy sit out, Brown would make his first start since his senior year in high school.

Tale of the tape: Panthers at Eagles
                                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                Offense

Cam Newton has come under fire during his sophomore season - both for his performance and his perceived indifference to it all. The former Heisman Trophy winner is struggling, but could find the waters smooth against a battered Eagles pass defense. Newton has formed a nice bond with tight end Greg Olsen, who has scored in two of his last three games versus Philadelphia. The Panthers are an uncharacteristic 16th in rushing yardage after racking up more yards on the ground than any team in the NFL since 2008.

With the outcome of last Sunday's game no longer in doubt, LeSean McCoy carried the ball in the waning moments and suffered a concussion that will sideline him versus the Panthers. McCoy and quarterback Michael Vick (concussion) will watch rookies Bryce Brown and Nick Foles continue in their place. Foles tossed interceptions on his first two possessions versus Washington and the game quickly unraveled after that. In addition, wide receiver Jason Avant (strained hamstring) and running back Chris Polk (sprained toe) also will not play against the Panthers.

                                Edge: Panthers

                                Defense

Panthers DE Greg Hardy, who has seven sacks this season, is dealing with an undisclosed illness and is considered questionable. Linebacker Jordan Senn is doubtful with an ankle injury for a stop unit that ranks in the middle of the pack in most defensive categories.

The Eagles' pass defense has surrendered 11 touchdown passes and hasn’t recorded an interception over the past four weeks. Opposing QBs have rung up a gaudy 143.6 passer rating against Philadelphia over that span.

                                Edge: Panthers

                                Special teams

After firing special teams coach Brian Murphy and replacing him with Richard Rodgers, the Panthers’ special teams struggled again Sunday in the loss to Tampa Bay. The unit failed on a fake punt attempt, and Captain Munnerlyn lost a fumble on a punt return in the contest. After making his first seven attempts this season, including a 5-for-5 performance at Chicago, kicker Justin Medlock has missed his last three field-goal attempts.

The Eagles don't have a kickoff return longer than 31 yards or a punt return longer than 20 yards this season. Punter Mat McBriar is tied for fifth in the league in with a 48.5-yard gross average, but the special teams unit as a whole has been downright awful in Philadelphia and it doesn’t look like things will improve this season.

Edge: Tie. Both teams are equally as bad.

                                Word on the street

“A lot of the players on defense have been turned over since I left, so I won’t have as great a feel for their defensive personnel as I would have. But as far as a general feel for what the atmosphere is going to be like and what they like to do, yes.” – Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott after being asked if his previous experience serving on the Philadelphia coaching staff will give his defense an advantage Monday night.

“These guys are all competitors and that’s one of the inherent problems with concussion management — they want to play. They know the consequences and everything, but they want to play. We know he’s anxious to go out there and play but we have to be careful with these guys.” – Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder on Michael Vick’s concussion.
