    Game 5, OKC at Dallas

    May 24, 2011

When Dirk Nowitzki took the podium after Dallas was eliminated from the 2010 NBA Playoffs, he kept his composure as always. Nowitzki took every question and tried his best to hide the disappointment and frustration, but you could see that he was consumed with doubt and resignation.

He was going to be an unrestricted free agent and the 2006 NBA Finals seemed like a decade ago. The Mavericks were close that year, real close. They held a 2-0 series advantage and a 13-point lead midway through the fourth quarter of Game 3 at Miami.

But that opportunity slipped away. One year later, Dallas became just the third No. 1 seed to lose in the first round when Golden State rode the hot hands of Baron Davis, Jason Richardson and Stephen Jackson to advance in six games. Then there was the aforementioned trip to the podium after the seventh-seeded Spurs sent the Mavs into vacation early.

"I haven't really thought about my future," Nowitzki said in San Antonio. "I guess I have some time now to think about my future and think about my options."
Nowitzki could’ve come to the conclusion that he needed help, that he had to team up with another superstar to win a ring. After all, some dude in Cleveland was thinking the same thing.

But Nowitzki decided not to go that route, opting instead to re-sign with Dallas for a maximum four-year deal. And now after Monday’s stirring comeback win at Oklahoma City, Dirk has the Mavs five games away from winning it all.

Many will place blame on the Thunder for allowing a 15-point lead to disappear in the last five minutes. I get that and we’ll note several of those mistakes momentarily but more than anything, Game 4 on Monday night was about Dirk Nowitzki’s greatness.

    That's right, greatness.

Dallas (68-28 straight up, 56-37-3 against the spread) trailed by 10 with 2:20 left when Nowitzki buried a 3-pointer from beyond the top of the key. Next, Russell Westbrook missed a pair of free throws.

On the ensuing possession, Nowitzki drove baseline on Nick Collison before offering a head fake. With Collison in the air, Nowitzki appeared to try and draw contact. When that wasn’t to be, he was left with a double pump fadeaway that found nothing by nylon. Just like that, the Mavs were within five at 101-96.

One possession later, Nowitzki got himself into the lane off the dribble before burying another audacious shot. Collison was all over Dirk with outstanding defense, but Nowitzki answered with better offense in the form of a fadeaway jumper off of one foot.

On OKC’s next offensive trip, Kevin Durant got ripped by Shawn Marion, who fed the ball ahead to Jason Terry. The veteran guard had Marion trailing perfectly but Terry inexplicably forced up a shot that got blocked.

Fortunately for Dallas, it got a gift on OKC’s next possession. Not only did Westbrook miss a jumper but with his team in the penalty, he then went over Marion’s back for a two-shot foul 80 feet from the basket with 39.5 ticks remaining. Marion would make just one of two, trimming the deficit to 101-99.

Following another OKC miss, Dallas opted not to use its last timeout. Jason Kidd and Nowitzki played pick and roll from out high with Dirk giving the ball back to Kidd with 11 seconds left. Nowitzki had received the pass too high and wanted to get better position closer to the blocks.

That’s what you call trust, something Dirk has with Kidd but Durant doesn’t have with Westbrook. Kidd, the consummate veteran with a pass-first mentality, fed Nowitzki again and Collison was whistled for a hold when he tried to make a steal.

At this point, I would’ve made the largest wager of my life that Nowitzki was going to drain both attempts at the charity stripe. Even with OKC calling out the ball boys to clean up perspiration between the first and second FTs, an act Dirk would tell the refs was “the ol’ we-just-spilled-water trick,” Nowitzki knotted the game at 101-all.

OKC had a chance at the end of regulation but Durant’s long 3-point attempt was blocked by Marion on a terrific defensive play. With the crowd stunned and James Harden on the bench fouled out, overtime was only a formality.

To OKC’s credit, the extra session was tight but Kidd made the clutch plays in the final minute. With the game tied at 105-105, Kidd ripped a steal from Durant as the All-Star spun to go up for a shot.

Kidd then gave the Mavs the lead for good with 40.3 seconds remaining. Once again, Westbrook made a crucial mistake. When Nowitzki passed to Kidd on the right wing, Westbrook ran out to contest and left his feet on a ball fake. After Westbrook zipped past him, Kidd had a clean look at a trey that was right on the money.

Another Westbrook miss resulted in a rebound by Kidd, who got fouled and nailed back-to-back free throws to prompt the fat lady. The Mavs would collect a 112-105 win as four-point road underdogs. The ‘over’ was a winner before OT with the 217 combined points easily eclipsing the lowest total of the series (196).

Nowitzki finished with 40 points, allowing gamblers to cash ‘over’ tickets on his prop bet for points scored (28 ½). Kidd had 17 points, seven assists, five rebounds and four steals, while Terry had 20 points from off the bench.

Oklahoma City (64-34 SU, 50-46-2 ATS) was led by Durant, who tallied 29 points and 15 rebounds. However, he committed nine turnovers and couldn’t buy a shot when it mattered most. He blamed himself afterward, telling the press that "I feel like I let down the city.”

Westbrook finished with 19 points, eight boards and eight assists, but he had six turnovers and made just 7-of-22 from the floor. Serge Ibaka added 18 points, 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.

Leading the West finals 3-1, Dallas will look for the kill shot in Game 5 Wednesday night back at home, where it is 35-13 SU and 25-21-1 ATS. The ‘over’ is 55-40-1 overall for Dallas, 27-20-2 in its home games.

Scott Brooks has his work cut out for him in getting his club to shake off the gut-wrenching Game 4 setback. However, we shouldn’t forget that OKC has won two of its three games at Dallas this year, including Game 2.

For the season, OKC is 28-20 SU and 26-21-1 ATS on the road.

Most books have installed the Mavs as 6 ½-point home favorites with a total of 198 ½. Bettors can take the Thunder to win outright for a plus-250 return (risk $100 to win $250).

Oklahoma City tries to extend its season in Dallas

        OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

        at DALLAS MAVERICKS

NBA Playoffs – Western Conference Finals
        Game 5 – Mavericks lead series 3-1
        Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. EDT
        Line: Dallas -6.5, Total: 198.5

Given the calamity that the ferocious weather between Dallas and Oklahoma City has wreaked over the past 24 hours, it may be hard for players and fans to shift gears and focus on a basketball game Wednesday night. Especially following the temporary evacuation at another sports venue, Tuesday night at the Ballpark at Arlington, due to severe weather and tornado warnings. Nonetheless, Dallas and Oklahoma City will play, and as far as the sports world is concerned, they will play a game with a great deal of meaning. At stake for the Thunder is the end of the basketball season. At stake for the Mavericks is a second trip for the franchise to the NBA Finals, which will allow the team’s two future Hall of Famers, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd, a second and third opportunity, respectively, at winning an NBA championship.

Dallas comes home with a 3-games-to-1 lead because Oklahoma City lost a basketball game on Monday that you almost never see happen in the regular season, in the NBA or even in college. Leading by 15 points with five minutes left to play, the Thunder’s best player, Kevin Durant (29 points), missed his last six shots. Oklahoma City on its home court, was outscored 17-2 to end regulation, and after trailing virtually the entire night, the Mavs grabbed their first lead 16 seconds into overtime, then held on when it mattered most, at the end. Final score: Dallas 112, Oklahoma City 105. "There's times and situations where they are going to test the courage and the mental inner strength of your team," said Jason Terry, who scored 20 for Dallas. "This was one of those times. This was a defining moment in our season where we look back and say, 'Hey, that was the game.'"

As defining as it was for Dallas, it was a crushing blow for an Oklahoma City team which had won eight overtime games during the regular season, (one shy of the NBA record) and had not lost consecutive games during the postseason until Monday night. Now the Thunder are faced with the unenviable task of overcoming a 3-games-to-1 deficit. Only eight teams have done so in NBA playoff history, and only two teams, the ‘68 Celtics and the ‘95 Rockets, were able to achieve that feat by winning twice on the road, which the Thunder will have to do to win this series, starting with Game 5. Scott Brooks was a reserve on that ‘95 Rockets team, and is hoping that his observations from the sideline then will help his young Thunder team now as they try and climb that mountain. "We can still make it a series," said Brooks, "It's always about being mentally ready for the challenge, because it is a challenge. There's no question we have a big challenge tomorrow, but it's a challenge that our guys will embrace."

To meet that challenge, the Thunder will have to figure out how to contain Nowitzki, who is averaging 33.8 PPG in the conference finals. Then there is Kidd, whose 11.5 PPG has been supplemented by some very well timed spurts of defense (he’s averaging 4.0 steals per game in the series) and ball movement (11 assists in Game 1, 8.3 APG for the series). Kidd’s three-pointer with 40 seconds to play in overtime put the Mavs up for good in Game 4.

Still, the Thunder know that they gave a game away at the worst possible time -- on their home floor in the postseason. Two areas they must address before Game 5 are three-point shooting and turnovers. The Thunder turned the ball over 26 times Monday night, and shot just 15% (2-for-13) from beyond the arc. Dallas is 2-0 this postseason in closeout games, taking care of the Trail Blazers on the road in a Game 6, and vaporizing the Lakers at home in a sweep If the Thunder give this team a crack to pull away early, summer vacation could start Thursday morning for Durant and company.

The pick here is for Dallas to smother the Thunder and punch a ticket back to the NBA Finals. This pair of three-star FoxSheets trends also lean towards the Mavericks, who are 13-1 ATS in this postseason:

Play On - Home teams (DALLAS) - when leading in a playoff series, a good team (60% to 75%) playing a team with a winning record. (55-23 over the last 5 seasons.) (70.5%, +29.7 units. Rating = 3*).

DALLAS is 24-9 ATS (72.7%, +14.1 Units) when playing against a team with a winning record - 2nd half of the season this season. The average score was DALLAS 101.5, OPPONENT 96.4 - (Rating = 3*).

Miami tries to finish off Bulls on Thursday night

            MIAMI HEAT

            at CHICAGO BULLS

NBA Playoffs – Eastern Conference Finals
            Game 5 – Miami leads series 3-1
            Tip-off: Thursday, 8:30 p.m. EDT
            Line: Chicago -3, Total: 180

The last one is the toughest one. Every NBA team that’s ever won a playoff series knows this. Every team that’s ever clinched a conference title or an NBA title knows it. In the oddest of ironies, it is that closeout game, where one team faces elimination, while the other team is playing the role of the eliminator, where the pressure to succeed is almost equal, despite the fact that the circumstances each team enjoys are very different. Thursday night in Chicago, the visiting Miami Heat, with a 3-1 series advantage, will bring their aspirations to the United Center to battle Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls to determine who can perform best under pressure, and who will take the next step to the NBA Finals, or an even more pressure-packed Game 6.

The Bulls are facing elimination because in Game 4 Miami’s big three superstars smothered Rose and the Bulls at the end of regulation and in overtime on both ends of the floor. LeBron James scored 35 points, and clamped down on Rose’s two attempts at game-winning shots in the final seconds of regulation, forcing him into difficult fall-away jumpers far away from the basket. Chris Bosh scored four of his 22 points in the overtime, and Dwyane Wade came up with three blocked shots in the extra session to thwart Chicago’s efforts to run its offense in crunch time. While Rose finished with 23 points, with Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng chipping in 20 apiece, Rose shot 8-for-27 from the floor, and the Bulls as a team could only shoot 40% for the game. They were an even worse 25% (6-for-24) from beyond the arc. As the stakes got higher in overtime, the Heat defense got better, allowing the Bulls just two made FG in the five-minute overtime. "You could tell that neither team wanted to lose," Wade said. "Both teams were clawing. If you're a fan of the game, this was a great basketball game. ... This was will."

Another major component of Miami’s victory in Game 4 was the performance of the Heat bench, who not only outscored the Bulls reserves 23-18, but out-rebounded them by an 18-5 margin. "I think it came down to hustle plays," Heat guard Mario Chalmers said. "At first they were beating us to all the 50/50 balls. In the fourth quarter and the overtime, we were able to beat them to all the 50/50 balls and that's what helped us win."

Now the Bulls must try and overcome the type of history they would rather not have made at this point of the season, losing three straight for the first time all year. They must now re-focus their energy on trying to win a playoff series when the team has zero margin for error. "I really believe we've got a group of guys that are going to keep on fighting," Deng said. "There's no quit in us. There's no quit in that locker room. It's really going to come down to the end of the game again."

Eight teams in NBA history have come back from a 3-1 deficit to win a series. Of those eight, six of those teams achieved the feat with Games 5 and 7 on its home floor, like the Bulls will have if they can push things that far. To make any of that happen, Chicago must start to shoot better against the Heat’s length and athleticism. Miami is shooting 46.8% for the series, compared to the Bulls’ 39.9%. Chicago cannot succeed if that disparity continues. The FT imbalance was another painful stat for Chicago in Game 4, as Miami made 10 more FT (32-of-38) in game four than the Bulls attempted (17-of-22). While the last three games have been close, and the Bulls have maintained some degree of offensive balance, at the end of the game when the Bulls needed baskets, Derrick Rose’s support system was nowhere to be found. That supporting staff must answer the call in Thursday’s elimination game. If they cannot, the next breeze that the team from the Windy City will be concerned with will be on the fairway.

Expect the Bulls, and especially their bench, to play with much greater energy at home in Chicago. Closing an opponent out on the road is very difficult, and the pick here is for the Bulls to stave off the end of its season for at least one night. The FoxSheets show two more trends siding with Chicago to win and cover.

Play On - Home favorites (CHICAGO) - triple revenge - 3 straight losses vs. opponent, in a game involving two good teams (60% to 75%). (83-44 since 1996.) (65.4%, +34.6 units. Rating = 2*).

CHICAGO is 27-12 ATS (69.2%, +13.8 Units) after a game where they failed to cover the spread this season. The average score was CHICAGO 99.3, OPPONENT 90.3 - (Rating = 2*).

The Over is 8-2 in the past 10 Miami games, including 3-1 in this series. The FoxSheets also provide a few trends expecting Over to occur in Game 5, including this one:

Play Over - All teams where the total is between 180 and 189.5 points (MIAMI, CHICAGO) - in a game involving two good defensive teams (41.5-43.5%). (80-40 over the last 5 seasons.) (66.7%, +36 units. Rating = 2*).

NBA Odds: Miami Heat look to bury Bulls

The Miami Heat are coming up big when it matters most as they battle the Chicago Bulls in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Miami has a commanding 3-1 series lead as play resumes Thursday night in the Windy City. The Don Best odds screen lists Chicago as 3-point home favorites with a total of 180-points. TNT will broadcast at 5:30 p.m. (PT).

The Heat are red-hot after winning the last three games, most recently at home on Tuesday (101-93 OT). Their trio of stars (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh) again proved to be too much down the stretch.

The 194 combined points scored went ‘over’ the 179 ½-point total. However, the 170-points scored in regulation would have gone ‘under.’ The ‘over’ is 3-1 this series and 8-2 in Miami’s last 10.

Miami got a fortunate ‘cover’ as 5-point favorites. It is 3-0 against the spread in its last three games and 7-2 in its last nine.

James had 35 points last game in over 49 minutes of action. He also played key defense down the stretch on Derrick Rose, including forcing an air-ball jumper that would have won it at the end of regulation.

James didn’t shoot the ball well (11-of-26) and neither did Wade (5-of-16, 14 points). However, Miami had a parade going to the free throw line, having 38 attempts to Chicago’s 22.

Wade did wake up in the overtime with six points and several key defensive plays. Bosh and James combined for the other 10 points in OT. There’s just too much superstar power for the Bulls to handle with the game on the line.

Coach Erik Spoelstra was also happy with his bench play. His second unit outscored Chicago (23-18) after being topped the first three games. Mike Miller had an important 12 points and a mind-boggling plus/minus rating of +36.

The Bulls are reeling after losing three straight games for the first time this season. They need to regain the swagger that allowed them to win 62 games in the regular season, most in the NBA. A lot of that confidence came from league-MVP Rose, but he seems to be questioning himself now.

Rose was just 8-of-27 from the floor in Game 4 (29.6 percent) and was scoreless in OT after 23 points in regulation. He was just 1-of-9 from three-point range and handed Miami seven turnovers. He’s shooting 33.3 percent overall the last three games (23-of-69).

Chicago’s supporting cast of Carlos Boozer (20 points, 11 rebounds), Luol Deng (20 points) and Joakim Noah (14 rebounds) all did enough for Chicago to win last game, but Rose needs to score while also shooting a decent percentage.

Coach Tom Thibodeau at least gets to return home where his team is 6-2 SU (4-4 ATS) this postseason. It won Game 1 (103-82) versus Miami before dropping Game 2 (85-75).

Miami is just 3-3 SU and ATS away in the playoffs. However, confidence is at an all-time high at just one win away from the franchise’s first Finals appearance since 2006. Bosh and James are also looking for their first championship, which will cement their legacies.

Chicago reserve big man Omir Asik (ankle) played just two minutes last game and is now officially out for the season. That is the only injury listed for either team.

The series will go back to Miami for Game 6 on Saturday if necessary. The Heat really want to end this series Thursday , especially with Dallas perhaps awaiting them after trying to close out Oklahoma City on Wednesday (result pending).
