Tide gets Ingram back for Duke game

      --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      ALABAMA CRIMSON TIDE (2-0)
      at DUKE BLUE DEVILS (1-1)

Kickoff: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. EDT, Line: Alabama -23.5, Total: 59

Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram makes his season debut when Alabama visits Duke. Ingram has been recovering from a knee injury and will join an already impressive Alabama rushing attack that amassed 180 yards against Penn State team last week. Ingram (1,658 rush yds, 20 total TD in 2009) will likely get a few more carries than Trent Richardson, who has 210 yards (6.6 YPC) this year. But no matter who carries the pigskin, Alabama expects to have major success against a Duke team that was below-average against the run last year, surrendering 153 rushing YPG last season (ranked 74th in nation).

Alabama’s defense will also get a boost with the return of junior DL Marcell Dareus, who led the Tide with 6.5 sacks last season and was the defensive MVP in his last contest -- the BCS championship game. The NCAA suspended Dareus for the first two games for accepting money from an agent. Considering Alabama already leads the nation in fewest points allowed (six), Duke QB Sean Renfree cannot expect to have success anywhere close to last week’s 48-point performance against Wake Forest.

The Blue Devils will look to air it out with Renfree (358 pass yds, four TD last week) and talented receiver Conner Vernon, who already has 18 catches for 310 yards this season. But the key for Duke to keep the game close will be sophomore RB Desmond Scott who has 199 rushing yards and 7.7 yards per carry this season.

Duke is 0-10 all-time against No. 1 ranked teams, and FoxSheets provides a highly-rated reason to pick Alabama to both win and cover:

Play On - Favorites of 21.5 to 31 points (ALABAMA) - after gaining 6.25 or more yards/play in 2 consecutive games, with 8 or more offensive starters including the QB returning. (23-2 over the last 10 seasons.) (92%, +20.8 units. Rating = 4*).

Big Ten Notes - Week 3

Ohio State Buckeyes (2-0, 2-0 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Miami FL, 36-24

Ohio State dominated the ‘Canes all game and save a couple of uncharacteristic special teams’ miscues by the Buckeyes and OSU would’ve won in blowout fashion. OSU’s opportunistic defense picked off Jacory Harris four times and converted 20 points off of those turnovers. Terrelle Pryor completed less than 50% of his passes, but made up for it with 113 rushing yards.

Next up: vs. Ohio – Saturday – 11:00 AM CST – Big Ten Network

Ohio State opens as a heavy favorite (-30.5) over their in-state opponent. Frank Solich's Bobcats gave the Buckeyes a scare two years ago, but Ohio is coming off of a home loss to Toledo. OSU lost starting safety C.J. Barnett – who had a breakout performance against Miami – to a season ending knee injury and will have to find a permanent replacement.

          Iowa Hawkeyes (2-0, 1-1 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Iowa State, 35-7 No Big Ten team has looked more dominant in the first two weeks than the Hawkeyes. They jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead against in-state rival Iowa State and didn’t allow the Cyclones to score until 1:51 remaining in the 4th quarter. Iowa had a +204 total yard advantage and 275 rushing yards, led by Adam Robinson’s 156.

Next up: at #23 Arizona – Saturday – 9:30 PM CST - ESPN

Iowa opens as a 1.5 point favorite on the road and will have to adjust to the elements in the desert. Nick Foles and the Arizona offense has outscored opponents 93-8 (against Toledo and The Citadel) this season and will be a huge test for Iowa’s defense, who could be without their defensive coordinator (hospitalized). ‘Zona is 14-5 at home the past three seasons while Iowa is 4-8 in road openers since 1998.

          Wisconsin Badgers (2-0, 0-2 ATS)

Last week: Defeated San Jose State, 27-14

The Badgers’ victories are leaving everyone a little unsettled. They’ve missed several chances for points in both of their victories this season. John Clay continued his hot start with 137 rushing yards and two touchdowns, but QB Tolzien was shaky again (191 passing yards and a bad interception).

Next up: vs. Arizona State – Saturday – 2:30 PM CST – ABC

Stud WR Nick Toon hasn’t practiced all week while WR Gilreath is out with a concussion. Seniors Anderson and Jefferson (105 career receptions, 4 TD’s combined) could start with two freshmen backing them up. Threet is the starting QB for ASU and he had a come-from-behind victory against Wisconsin in 2008 as the starting QB for Michigan. Wisconsin opened as a two-touchdown favorite at home.

Penn State Nittany Lions (1-1, 0-2 ATS)

Last week: Lost to Alabama, 3-24

Penn State true freshmen QB had a rough-go in his first career road start at top ranked Alabama. Bolden finished with 144 passing yards and 2 interceptions. Their offensive line hasn’t been able to open any holes for RB Royster (72 rush yards this season) and has allowed far too much pressure on the QB.

Next up: vs. Kent State – Saturday – 11:00 AM CST – ESPN2

PSU opens as a 21 point favorite against Kent State. Despite committing five turnovers, the Golden Flashes gave Boston College a real scare last week, losing by just 13. Kent State also leads the nation in rush defense, allowing just 11 yards per game.

          Michigan Wolverines (2-0, 2-0 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Notre Dame, 28-24

It hasn’t taken long for quarterback Denard Robinson to make a name for himself. He followed up his impressive week one performance by passing for 244 yards and running for 258 more, totaling 3 touchdowns in the win over Notre Dame. Their defense will have to improve if they want to continue competing once Big Ten play rolls around. Notre Dame tallied 535 total yards and had touchdown plays of 53 and 95 yards.

Next up: vs. Massachusetts – Saturday – 11:00 AM CST – Big Ten Network

After a big win over Notre Dame, Michigan will try to avoid a letdown against FCS Massachusetts (2-0). UMass QB Havens has thrown for 516 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 64% of his passes and could cause some problems if this Michigan secondary isn’t prepared.

Michigan State Spartans (2-0, 1-1 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Florida Atlantic, 30-17

Florida Atlantic was able to stick around against the Spartans while holding a +15 minute time of possession advantage. Sparty’s defense allowed the Owls to convert on 9 of 18 3rd and 4th down attempts. MSU was able to prevail behind sophomore RB Edwin Baker, who has been spectacular so far this season. Baker ran for 183 yards and 1 touchdown on just 15 carries against the Owls.

Next up: vs. Notre Dame – Saturday – 7:00 PM CST – ABC/ESPN2

Michigan State opens as a 3.5 point favorite over the Irish, whom they’ve beaten 9 of the past 13 meetings. Notre Dame will be hungry for a win after a close loss to Michigan a week ago. Brian Kelly’s revamped offense will test this MSU secondary that really struggled a season ago.

          Northwestern Wildcats (2-0, 1-1 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Illinois State, 37-3

After an unimpressive win over inferior Vanderbilt in week one, Northwestern had a complete performance against Illinois State. NU QB Dan Persa has been extremely efficient in his first year as a starter, completing 38 of 44 passes (86%) for 462 yards with five touchdowns and no picks. Defensively they forced four turnovers and allowed just 263 yards against Illinois State.

Next up: at Rice – Saturday, 6:00 PM CST

Rice hung with Texas in week one (tie-game midway through the 2nd quarter) and defeated North Texas on the road last week. Their quarterback (Fanuzzi) is an Alabama transfer and their running back (McGuffie) is a Michigan transfer. Northwestern is a 6.5 point road favorite, but the Owls are 4-1 all time against the Wildcats.

Illinois Fighting Illini (1-1, 2-0 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Illinois State, 35-3

The Illini delivered an impressive performance against a good FCS opponent, Southern Illinois, winning 35-3. Quarterback Scheelhaase was much more efficient in week two, completing 14 of 18 passes for 229 yards and 2 touchdowns. Mikel LeShoure (115 rush yards, 2 TDs) and A.J. Jenkins (114 receiving yards, TD) were also impressive in Illinois’ home debut.

Next up: vs. Northern Illinois – Saturday, 11:00 AM CST – Big Ten Network

The Illini will try to maintain their unbeaten record (12-0) against public schools from the state. In a similar situation, Iowa State hosted NIU in week one and held the Huskies to 249 total yards and 10 points in the Cyclones 17 point win. NIU head coach Jerry Kill was hospitalized Sunday and could miss this game. Illinois opens as a 7-point favorite.

          Purdue Boilermakers (1-1, 1-1 ATS)

Last week: Defeated Western Illinois, 31-21

The Boilers might have found an answer at running back in Dan Dierking, who ran for 102 rush yards and 2 touchdowns in the win over Western Illinois. But star receiver Keith Smith will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL & MCL. Their young defense allowed 406 yards to Western Illinois, including 286 passing yards.

Next up: vs. Ball State – Saturday, 11:00 AM CST – Big Ten Network

QB Robert Marve has completed 71% of his passes for 391 yards this season, but has just 1 touchdown compared to 3 interceptions. Receivers Cortez Smith and Justin Siller will have to step up now that Keith Smith is lost for the season. Ball State lost to Liberty last week and Purdue is 37-8-1 all-time vs. current MAC teams. Purdue opens as 17 point favorites.

Minnesota Golden Gophers (1-1, 1-1 ATS)

Last week: Lost to South Dakota, 38-41

Minnesota was the victim of the nation’s biggest upset in week two, losing to FCS South Dakota. South Dakota’s QB Dante Warren threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 81 yards and two touchdowns. Overall, the Gophers allowed 41 points and 444 total yards. Gophers quarterback Adam Weber (258 yards, 3 TD’s) and running back Duane Bennett (104 yards, 2 TD’s) did their part, but the defense really let them down.

Next up: vs. USC – Saturday, 2:30 PM CST – ESPN

USC's Matt Barkley takes aim at a Gophers' secondary that really struggled against South Dakota. Gopher starting safeties Kim Royston and Kyle Theret are both out for this one. Minnesota is 1-6 vs. non-conference BCS schools since 2005 (average loss by 11 PPG) and is a 12 point underdog entering this game.

          Indiana Hoosiers (1-0, 1-0 ATS)

Last game: Defeated Towson, 51-17 (Week 1)

The Hoosiers were idle Saturday and it has now been 16 days since they defeated Towson in week one. Towson out-gained the Hoosiers and had +13 minutes time of possession. Defensively Indiana allowed 227 rushing yards on 5.4 yards per carry.

Next up: at Western Kentucky – Saturday, 4:00 PM CST – Big Ten Network

All-Big Ten wideout Tandon Doss is expected to make his season debut as Indiana hits the road for the first time against Western Kentucky. WKU is just 2-24 the since joining the Sun Belt in 2008 and is already 0-2 this season after allowing 112 points to Nebraska and Kentucky. Indiana is a 12 point road favorite.

            Florida at Tennessee

Back in the 1990s, the winner of this rivalry game could just about go ahead and book its trip to the SEC Championship Game. However, times have changed, particularly up on Rocky Top.

Tennessee (1-1 straight up, 0-1 against the spread) is a double-digit home underdog for the second straight Saturday. Guess how many times that's happened before? Never. The Volunteers have their third head coach in the last 21 months and their AD Mike Hamilton has to be on a boiling hot seat.

And, oh yeah, UT still hasn’t beaten Urban Meyer in five attempts. In fact, Meyer owns an incredible 14-1 record against Florida’s three biggest rivals – UT, UGA and FSU.

If the odds are any indicator, that record should be 15-1 once the dust settles early Saturday evening at Neyland Stadium. As of Thursday afternoon, most betting shops had Florida (2-0 SU, 1-1 ATS) listed as a 14-point ‘chalk’ with a total of 46. Bettors can take the Vols to win outright for a monster plus-425 payout (risk $100 to win $425).

Florida looked like garbage in a season-opening 34-12 win over Miami (OH.) that was much closer than the final score indicated. The Gators could only muster a pathetic 25 yards of total offense in the first three quarters. Even worse, they had eight fumbles that were mostly created by confusion with the center-to-quarterback exchange from out of the shotgun formation.

Things weren’t much better in the first half last week against South Florida. The Bulls jumped out to a 7-0 lead and UF didn’t get even until John Brantley found Carl Moore for an 11-yard scoring strike late in the second quarter.

In the second half, junior running back Jeff Demps took over to lead UF to a 38-14 win over USF as a 14 1/2-point home ‘chalk.’ Demps put the Gators ahead for good when he busted loose for a 62-yard touchdown run down the sideline early in the third quarter.

Demps finished the day with 11 carries for 139 yards, but his contributions didn’t end there. He also had a 54-yard kickoff return and a 21-yard reception. Brantley completed 18-of-31 throws for 172 yards and two TDs without being intercepted. Moore had five catches for 40 yards, including a leaping grab to keep a scoring drive alive on a fourth-and-three play.

As much as the offense has struggled in two games, UF’s defense has been the exact opposite. This unit has already bagged eight interceptions, including a pair of pick-sixes for scores (one from Janoris Jenkins in Week 1 and another from Justin Trattou vs. USF).

Derek Dooley’s squad got off to a strong start with a 50-0 win over UT-Martin in its opener at Neyland Stadium. The results were the same for the first 27 minutes of last week’s home game against Oregon.

The Vols dominated most of the first half, jumping out to a 13-3 lead behind 111 rushing yards in the first quarter alone from junior RB Tauren Poole. With 2:56 left until halftime, the Ducks got a 42-yard field goal from Rob Beard to narrow the deficit to 13-6.

After forcing a three and out, Oregon took over at its own 38 with 1:55 remaining until halftime. Four plays later, Darron Thomas perfectly lofted a 27-yard strike to David Paulson to get the Ducks even going into intermission.

From there, it was all Oregon. The Ducks would outscore the Vols 35-0 over the final 30 minutes to capture a 48-13 win as 10 ½-point road favorites. What started as a promising night for UT ended with empty seats galore and a deflating defeat.

On the bright side, Poole finished with 162 yards and one TD on 21 carries. He goes into Week 3 leading the SEC in rushing yards with 272 and a 6.8 yards-per-carry average. Junior QB Matt Simms, a juco transfer who started his career at Louisville, has completed 29-of-53 passes for 332 yards with one TD pass and one interception. Simms will have to go one more week without starting WR Gerald Jones, who is still nursing a broken bone in his left hand. Jones led UT in receptions (46) and receiving yards (680) last year.

Florida will also be missing one of its best playmakers. Chris Rainey might’ve been ‘out’ due to a concussion he suffered against USF last week, but all doubt was removed Tuesday morning when he was arrested for stalking his ex-girlfriend. Rainey has made six catches for 34 yards and one TD.

In Rainey’s absence, CB Janoris Jenkins will take over the punt-returning duties. Jenkins had a 30-yard return in the second half against USF after Rainey had left the game with a concussion. Omarius Hines will move over from tight end to start for Rainey as the slot receiver.

CBS will have television coverage at 3:30 p.m. Eastern.

            **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--The last time UT beat UF was in 2004 when the Vols won a controversial 30-28 decision thanks to a last-second field goal. The Gators got completely hosed by the officials when they failed to wind the clock before a UF punt in the final minute. The error, which the SEC later acknowledged, saved the Vols about 35 seconds. They prevailed on a kick as time expired.

--Some UT fans might call the ’04 result poetic justice due to the controversial finish that went UF’s way in 2000. That’s when Jesse Palmer connected with Jabar Gaffney for a go-ahead touchdown in the final minute. Whether or not Gaffney ever had possession of the ball is up for debate and remember, this was before we had instant replay. But here’s the thing that the Volunteer faithful always forget: Gaffney’s catch came on 2nd and goal with the Gators trailing by three. Therefore, even if Gaffney’s game-winning grab was nullified, UF would’ve still had a chance to score a TD on third and goal, and it could’ve kicked a chip-shot field goal to force overtime if the third-down play failed.

--Florida safety Will Hill is expected to start after missing the first two games of the season due to an unspecified suspension.

--The ‘under’ has cashed in six of the last eight head-to-head meetings between UT and UF.

--Dating back to last season, the ‘over’ is 6-1 in Tennessee’s last seven games with a total.

--During Meyer’s six-year tenure, UF players have been arrested 30 times.

--In UF’s last trip to Neyland in 2008, it dealt out woodshed treatment. Brandon James returned the opening kickoff into UT territory and several plays later, the Gators were in the end zone. The blowout was ‘on’ at that point, as they cruised to a 30-6 victory as 7 ½-point road favorites.

--As a home underdog on Derek Dooley’s watch from 2007-2009, La. Tech posted a perfect 6-0 spread record.

--The NCAA denied an appeal and upheld its four-game suspension of Georgia WR A.J. Green, who won't be able to make his season debut until an Oct. 2 game at Colorado.

--After demolishing Cal 52-31 last night, we need to start taking note of Colin Kapernick (sleeper Heisman contender?) and the Nevada Wolf Pack. Might Chris Ault's team still be unbeaten when it hosts Boise St. on Nov. 26? Nevada's toughest tests between now and then are at BYU (9/25), at Hawaii (10/16) and at Fresno St. (11/13).

              Late-Night Tip Sheet

Gamblers have a slew of late-night opportunities to produce winners. For instance, Iowa and Arizona will collide in Tuscon at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Also, ESPN2 will have the telecast of Wake Forest at Stanford at 11:15 p.m. Eastern. Let’s take a closer at look at these games a few other late-night tilts.

              **Iowa at Arizona**

--As of early this morning, most betting shops had Arizona (2-0 straight up, 1-0 against the spread) listed as a one-point favorite with the total in the 45-46 range.

--Iowa (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) beat Eastern Illinois 37-7 in its opener and then took out Iowa St. 35-7 last week. The Hawkeyes easily took the money as 12-point home favorites against the Cylcones. Ricky Stanzi threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns without being intercepted. Also, sophomore RB Adam Robinson ran for 156 yards and one TD on just 14 carries, while Jewel Hampton netted 84 rushing yards and one TD on 20 totes.

--Arizona opened the season on the road with a dominant 41-2 win at Toledo as a 14 ½-point favorite. Next, the Wildcats mashed The Citadel 52-6 in a non-lined affair. Nic Grigsby ran for 107 yards and three TDs on just 11 carries versus the Bulldogs. In the first two games, Grigsby has five rushing touchdowns and is averaging an eye-opening 8.4 yards per carry.

--Arizona junior QB Nick Foles has completed 49-of-59 passes (83.1%!) for 574 yards and three touchdowns. However, Foles has been intercepted twice in as many games. His favorite target has been Juron Criner, the junior WR who has 13 catches for 247 yards and one TD.

--Robinson has been the catalyst for the Hawkeyes to date. He has rushed for 265 yards and four TDs, averaging 7.0 YPC. Stanzi has connected on 70.7 percent of his passes for 433 yards and three TDs without being picked off.

--Mike Stoops’ team has cashed tickets at a 7-2 ATS clip in its last nine games as a home favorite. Meanwhile, Iowa has covered the number in four straight games as a road underdog.

--When these schools met in Iowa City last season, the Hawkeyes won by a 27-17 count as 3 ½-point home favorites. The Hawks limited ‘Zona to just 190 net yards.

--Arizona starting sophomore safety Adam Hall has been upgraded to ‘probable’ despite a shoulder injury.

--Dating back to last season, the ‘under’ has cashed in four consecutive games for Arizona.

              **Wake Forest at Stanford**

--As of early this morning, most books were listing Stanford (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) as a 17 ½-point ‘chalk’ with the total in the 58-59 range. Bettors can take the Demon Deacons on the money line for a plus-750 return at the Las Vegas Hilton (risk $100 to win $750).

--Jim Harbaugh’s team went on the road in Pac-10 play last week and dealt out woodshed treatment. In fact, Stanford gave UCLA a cream-cheese bagel in a 35-0 win as a 5 ½-point favorite. Andrew Luck threw a pair of TD passes and also ran for 63 yards.

--Wake Forest (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) dropped Presbyterian 53-13 before beating Duke 54-48 in its ACC opener. The Deacs covered the spread as 5 ½-point home favorites against the Blue Devils. When QB Ted Stachitas left the Duke game with a hand injury, true freshman Tanner Price replaced him and threw for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Price, who will get his first career start Saturday, also rushed for 56 yards and one TD.

--Jim Grobe’s program has thrived as an underdog during his 10-year tenure. In fact, the Deacs own a 19-12-1 spread record in 32 games as road underdogs on Grobe’s watch. As a double-digit ‘dog since 2004, Wake is 7-2 ATS.

--Stanford has posted a 7-3 spread record in 10 games as a home favorite during Harbaugh’s four-year tenure. The Cardinal is 3-1 ATS in four games as a double-digit ‘chalk’ since 2007.

--Stanford went into intermission with a 17-3 lead last year at Wake Forest, but the Deacs scored 21 unanswered points to capture a 24-17 victory as three-point home favorites.

--Before the ‘under’ cashed in Stanford’s win at UCLA last week, the Cardinal had seen the ‘under’ prevail in seven of its eight previous outings.

              **B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

--For most of the week, most spots had Houston as a three-point road favorite at UCLA. But when Cougars’ QB Case Keenum (concussion) was upgraded to ‘probable’ Friday afternoon, most books moved the Cougars to four. FSN will have television coverage of this 10:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff. The total is 64, while the Bruins are plus-160 to win outright (risk $100 to win $160).

--If the Bruins can’t beat Houston on tonight, they are likely staring at a 0-4 start since a trip to Austin to face Texas is on deck next week. Looking at the entire slate, a 2-10 campaign certainly isn’t out of the question. Can you say hot seat, Rick Neuheisel?

--Most books are listing Idaho as a seven-point home favorite against UNLV. The total is 57 ½, while the Rebels are plus-220 on the money line. ESPNU will provide television coverage of this matchup at 10:30 p.m. Eastern. The Vandals have failed to cover the spread in four of five games as home favorites during Robb Akey’s four-year tenure.

--The NCAA denied Georgia’s appeal of WR A.J. Green’s four-game suspension on Friday. Green will make his season debut Oct. 2 at Colorado.

--Kudos to Southern Miss head coach Larry Fedora, who had his team ready to play in last night's 31-16 home win over Kansas as a 5 1/2-point favorite. The Golden Eagles have won 10 in a row at home. The 47 combined points stayed 'under' the 53-point total.

--Virginia Tech certainly didn't do Boise St. any favors when it lost to James Madison last week. However, the Broncos had to enjoy seeing Nevada deal out a beatdown to Cal last night. The Wolf Pack trounced the Bears by a 52-31 count. Chris Ault's team can make another strong statement for the WAC when it plays at BYU next week. Also, Fresno St. plays at Ole Miss in Week 4. Remember, the Bulldogs already beat Cincinnati by double digits. Utah St. is another team that can help out Boise's strength of schedule. The Aggies played Oklahoma tough in a 31-24 loss in Norman, and they also get a shot at BYU in a few weeks. So if you're a Boise fan, you'd like to see BYU win at FSU today and you want Oregon St. to destroy Louisville. And obviously, you want Oregon St. and Va. Tech to be contenders in the Pac-10 and ACC throughout the season.

--Looking ahead to Week 4 – the best games look like this:
              1-Alabama at Arkansas
              2-South Carolina at Auburn
              3-West Virginia at LSU
              4-Oregon State at Boise State
              5-Miami at Pittsburgh (Thursday)
