      Len’s Top Five

Happy Tuesday everyone, here's my Top 5 for June 9, 2009 from Len Berman Sports.

      1. Quick Hits

The Orlando Magic trailing 2-games to none play host to the Lakers tonight in game 3 of the NBA Finals.
The Detroit Red Wings, leading 3 games to 2, can wrap up their second consecutive Stanley Cup tonight in Pittsburgh.
It's good to be Tiger Woods. He wanted to practice at Bethpage Black yesterday in advance of the U.S. Open, so he just showed up (with a nice police escort) and teed off.
Manager Bobby Cox wins his 2000th game with the Braves. It wasn't exactly party time. Said Cox, "All it means is that you’re getting old and you’ve been around too long.”
Yankees and Red Sox begin another war tonight in Boston.

      2. Fan Fare

It was quite a weekend in the stands. Kate Hudson (A-Rod's friend), Will Ferrell (heckler of Rays manager Joe Maddon) and Sarah Palin (Rudy's buddy) were all at the Yankee game. After the Yankees beat Tampa Bay Mrs. Palin was quoted as saying "we won." Way to suck up to those Florida voters, Sarah.

      3. Triple Frown

Will we ever see a Triple Crown winner again in horse racing? We were spoiled in the 70's, we had 3 in 6 years. And now a 31-year drought. 3 major races in 5 weeks is just too much for horses/jockeys/trainers/owners to handle. That's my story. Who says you can't spread it out over 6 weeks? Who says the Belmont has to be a mile and a half? Baseball concocted the DH, hockey created shootouts and basketball went to the three point shot. Lets shake things up to add excitement to a sport that needs some help.

      4. Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Become....

I always think of NFL players as having the shortest careers. The violent nature of pro football, the reason. Now comes this stat from the San Diego Union. About 78 percent of players are bankrupt, unemployed or divorced within two years of leaving the NFL.
So here's how the glamour of pro football works. You were a star in college, but you don't get drafted. You spend most of your short career on injured reserve. You don't make much money and when you retire, that's when the fun starts!

      5. Sis Boom Bah

Here they go again. In West Virginia a cheerleader mom has been indicted for passing around nude photos on the internet of her daughter's cheerleading rival. Not quite as bad as the Texas woman who hired a hitman to wipe out the mother of her daughter's cheerleader rival. Then there was the woman in Wisconsin who stole her daughter's identity so she could enroll in High School and become a cheerleader herself.
Two bits, four bits, six bits a dollar, all who think cheerleader moms are nuts, stand up and holler.

Today's Birthday: Sportscaster Dick Vitale. 70.
Bonus Birthdays: Actors Michael J. Fox 48. Johnny Depp. 46.
      Extra Bonus: Jackie Mason. 73.

Today in Sports: The great Secretariat becomes the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years. 1973.
Bonus Event: Donald Duck makes his screen debut in a cartoon called "The Wise Little Hen." 1934.
