    Daily Sports Roundup

    Tuesday, June 9

Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Red Wings try to clinch the Cup, the Magic try to beat the Lakers, and the Cards send their ace to take on the Marlins.

Tipping off on the hardwood . . .

The Lakers will try to take a commanding lead in the NBA Finals with a win in Orlando in Game 3 on Tuesday night. Kobe Bryant poured in 29 points on Sunday night as Los Angeles pulled out a 101-96 overtime victory at home and took a 2-0 series lead. Pau Gasol added 24 points and 10 rebounds in the win for the Lakers, while Lamar Odom picked up 19 points off the bench. Rashard Lewis had a game-high 34 points for the Magic, and Dwight Howard tossed in 17 points.

Meeting up on the diamond . . .

Chris Carpenter will try to stay unbeaten on the season when he takes the hill for the Cardinals in Florida on Tuesday night. Carpenter (4-0, 0.71 ERA) has allowed just three earned runs over 38 innings of work so far this season, and he's coming off a complete-game three-hitter vs. the Reds. The Marlins will turn to Josh Johnson on Tuesday; the righthander is 5-1 with a 2.63 ERA this season.

Elsewhere on the National League schedule for Tuesday it's Cincinnati at Washington, Pittsburgh at Atlanta, Colorado at Milwaukee, the Cubs at Houston, San Diego at the Dodgers, San Francisco at Arizona, and Philadelphia at the Mets. Johan Santana (7-3, 2.00 ERA) gets the ball for New York in that one; the lefthander threw seven shutout innings to defeat the Phillies in a start on May 6.

Over in the American League on Tuesday it'll be Seattle at Baltimore, the Angels at Tampa Bay, Kansas City at Cleveland, Toronto at Texas, Detroit at the White Sox, and Minnesota at Oakland. As well, the Yankees and Red Sox will clash at Fenway Park, with A.J. Burnett (4-2, 4.69 ERA) taking on Josh Beckett (6-2, 4.09 ERA). Righthanders Burnett and Beckett used to be teammates with the Marlins.

    Taking a trip around the rink . . .

The Red Wings can finish off the Penguins and skate away with the Stanley Cup with a win in Game 6 of the series at Mellon Arena on Tuesday night. Detroit rolled to a 5-0 win at home in Game 5 on Saturday night, getting goals from Daniel Cleary, Valtteri Filppula, Niklas Kronwall, Brian Rafalski, and Henrik Zetterberg, and 22 saves from Chris Osgood. Marc-Andre Fleury gave up five goals on 21 shots before being pulled by the Pens, who are -140 Game 6 faves.

    Rounding out the Roundup . . .

The Fever will try again to pick up their first win of the season on Tuesday when they play host to the Storm in WNBA action. Indiana fell 87-86 to Atlanta in their opener on Saturday, then was thumped 96-74 by Minnesota on Sunday. Seattle is coming off back-to-back wins over Sacramento on the weekend, winning 71-61 on the road on Saturday and then grabbing an 80-70 victory at home on Sunday.

                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins (-130, 5.5)

The Detroit Red Wings skated into Pittsburgh for this very game last year, outplayed the Penguins in their building and, in the final indignity, paraded with the Stanley Cup on the same ice where Mario Lemieux once played.

Think Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin and Marc-Andre Fleury don't remember the emptiness and frustration they felt after that Stanley Cup finals Game 6? After more than 100 games played over more than eight grueling months, the season ends and the other team celebrates before your friends, family and fans?

"We don't want that image in our heads again," Penguins forward Max Talbot said Monday.

If the Red Wings win this Game 6 on Tuesday, a year and five days after winning their last one there, it will be more than an image to the Penguins. It will be an instant replay.

Not since Montreal clinched in Boston in 1977 and 1978 has a team won the Stanley Cup in the same opponent's building two seasons in a row, but the Red Wings will gladly take another clincher in Pittsburgh if it means avoiding an ever-dangerous Game 7.

"It's obviously a special night when you know you have a chance to win the Cup in one single hockey game," goalie Chris Osgood.

The Penguins have heard for two days how they lost the Stanley Cup with a more-than-miserable 5-0 loss in Game 5 on Saturday. Even if they win Game 6 before an all-in-white home crowd, they must go back to Detroit and inhospitable Joe Louis Arena, where they have been outscored 10-2 while losing three games and, at times, their tempers.

No, the Penguins don't need to be told what many outside their dressing room are thinking: This one's over.

Penguins forward Ruslan Fedotenko is certain it's not.

Five years ago, his Tampa Bay Lightning were down 3-2 to the Flames going into a road Game 6, with seemingly half of Alberta filling Calgary's Red Mile entertainment district to celebrate. Instead, Tampa Bay won in overtime, and the Lightning also took Game 7 at home as Fedotenko scored both goals during their 2-1 victory.

"You don't think about Game 7," Fedotenko said. "You focus on one game, one shift, and focus like it's your last shift, and you do it again on the next shift. You play like that, you take care of business, you put yourselves in a good position to win that game."

The Penguins' problem is the Red Wings are in a much better position. Two-way star Pavel Datsyuk's return after missing seven playoff games with a foot injury gave them a big lift in Game 5, and many of their players have been in games like this before.

Nicklas Lidstrom, Kris Draper, Tomas Holmstrom and Kirk Maltby played on all four Red Wings Stanley Cup winners since 1997, and they can make it five on Tuesday. None of those previous four finals went to a Game 7.

"You play for home ice and we have it, but that doesn't give you any guarantees," Maltby said. "You always want to try and get that fourth win sooner than later. We have to play like we're a desperate team."

Especially against Crosby, who is second in the playoffs with 31 points but was neutralized in Game 5 by a combination of Henrik Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Brian Rafalski and the Penguins' ineptness. The Pittsburgh captain said it's one bad game and it's over.

One more loss and the Penguins' season is over.

"I think we're going to bounce back," Crosby said. "We have all year. We weren't happy with that effort, but we've moved on. I think we realize that, when we were in 10th place in the middle of the season, if they had told us that we had to win a game to force Game 7, we would have taken it."

For all the Penguins' struggles in Detroit, Game 7 couldn't look more attractive.

"I really believe it's not over," goalie Marc-Andre Fleury said. "I really look for that Game 7. But at the same time we've got to be ready to just play the game."

There's no talk now that the Red Wings are too tired or too slow - funny how winning 5-0 quiets all that - but they also understand that if Pittsburgh forces Game 7, the pressure shifts from the Penguins to them.

"You have to find a way to win in the other team's building. Except in this series, we've been able to do that," Draper said. "It's up to us to respond, to play the kind of hockey we know we can play."

And the way Marian Hossa believed they would play after he jumped sides from Pittsburgh to Detroit after last year's finals.

"It's the first time I've been in this position, so close," Hossa said. "That would be a dream come true (to win it in Pittsburgh), obviously."

Not for the Penguins, who still remember Hossa's last-second shot skittering along the goal line but not going in during their decisive 3-2 loss in Game 6 last year.

To coach Dan Bylsma, the best teams and best players are those that accomplish the most during the toughest times. For his team, this is about as tough as it gets.

"I like it being a defining moment. Moments like this define where you're at," he said. "Everyone in that room should be ready to play their best game and make a difference."

                Pick: Detroit

What bettors need to know: Stanley Cup finals Game 6
                  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins (-140, 5.5)

                  The Hank and Pav show

Pavel Datsyuk returned in a big way on Saturday, registering two assists and a +2 rating in 17:38 of ice time. Datsyuk, along with linemates Henrik Zetterberg and Dan Cleary, were the catalysts in Detroit’s 5-0 shutout of the Penguins.

ā€œ(I am) feeling good and more confident,ā€ said Pavel Datsyuk on Sunday.

Mike Babcock is unsure whether he’ll pair up Datsyuk and Zetterberg for Game 6.

                  The Os-good, the Os-bad, and the Os-ugly

Chris Osgood played well in the first two games of this series, but has struggled on the road during the postseason. The Detroit goalie is 11-1 with a 1.40 goals against average at home and 4-5 with a 2.91 GAA on the road. Osgood has looked nothing like the netminder who had a 3.09 GAA and .887 save percentage during the regular season.

                  Don’t believe the hype

Pens defenseman Brooks Orpik commented after Game 4 that the Red Wings ā€œlooked a little fatiguedā€ and that Henrik Zetterberg ā€œlooks so tired out there.ā€

The Wings, unfazed and looking fresh, dominated Game 5, reroute to the 5-0 win.

Detroit looked tired on the road because they were struggling to match up against Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin without the benefit of last change. The line juggling should be an issue at the Igloo again on Tuesday.

                  Off the deep end

The return of Pavel Datsyuk after seven games improves the depth of an already impressive Detroit team. Whether he plays as a center or on the wing, the contributions of this Hart Trophy nominee can’t be overlooked.

The Red Wings can roll out three solid scoring lines putting a bigger strain on Pittsburgh’s defensemen. The Pens blueliners must continue to hit hard and block shots.

Brooks Orpik leads the playoffs in hits and five of the top seven shot blockers in this postseason belong to Pittsburgh.

                  Special teams

Pittsburgh must find a way to score using its special teams. Detroit has struggled on the penalty kill for the entire playoffs (72.1 percent). Pittsburgh has taken advantage, scoring four power play goals in 11 opportunities (36.4 percent).

Pittsburgh forward Jordan Staal has demonstrated the ability to score short-handed. The youngster scored seven short-handed markers as a rookie in 2006-2007 and scored the game-tying goal while down a man in Game 4.

                  Other notes

                  - The home team has won all five games in this series.

                  - Detroit is 0-6 in its last six games as a road underdog.

                  - Pittsburgh is 4-0 in its last four playoff games as a favorite of -110 to -150.

                  - The Penguins are 8-1 in their last nine games when their opponents score five goals or more in their previous game.

                  - The over is 4-0 in Detroit’s last four road games.

                  - The under is 7-1 in Pittsburgh’s last eight following a loss of three or more goals.

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-4, 198)

Kobe Bryant has changed his look.

Gone is the teeth-baring, nose-flaring, eyes-on-the-prize scowl that the Los Angeles Lakers star showed again and again in Game 1 of the NBA finals. The intensity diminished after Game 2, his expression morphing into one of relief and sheer luck.

A botched layup by Magic rookie Courtney Lee is perhaps the biggest reason why these finals are not tied and why Bryant isn't smiling even with his team up 2-0. That level of seriousness might be cause for Orlando to grimace.

The Magic nearly returned from Los Angeles with the best-of-seven series tied. Instead, they're down 2-0, and now Bryant has a promise for Game 3 on Tuesday night.

"We're about to kick it up," he said. "You'd better believe it. We're close. You see what I'm saying? This is the finals. We're going to be ready to go."

For all the bravado, the Lakers can be careless, a team with holes and an inability to finish off an opponent as a champion must. They let Houston extend a series despite the absence of Yao Ming. Denver outmuscled and outhustled a Lakers team that seemed to lose its enthusiasm until Game 6 of the conference finals.

Los Angeles believes those days are over.

"We're playing tougher," forward Pau Gasol said. "We understand what it takes to go get the championship."

This is a franchise closing in on its 15th title. It is facing Magic team still searching for its first finals victory. Bryants insists this is no time to get comfortable.

"What's there to be happy about?" he asked. "The job's not finished."The Magic have had their shots - one in particular - to change the series.Lee missed a wide-open, alley-oop layup that would have won Game 2 at the fourth-quarter buzzer Sunday night. It was another chapter in a long history of Magic misery, one that now has them 0-6 in finals games.

Call it the "alley-oops." This mistake, however, might hurt the most.

Orlando has been able to come back from seemingly every heartbreak this season - injuries, four last-second losses in the playoffs and series deficits in two rounds. But this could be too tough a challenge. Only three teams have won a title after losing the first two games in the finals, most recently Miami over Dallas in 2006.

"We've just got to go home and take care of business," Magic center Dwight Howard said. "The Lakers did a good job of protecting their home, and now it's our turn to do the same thing. We've been in some tough situations. We've just got to fight our way out."

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy led the Heat to start that 2005-06 season before stepping aside. He was still on the Heat payroll helping Pat Riley from afar.

"Dallas never won another game," Van Gundy said. "You know, series can change."

The Magic would need quite a turnaround. Their backcourt has been dreadful. Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson, who returned for the finals after being out since early February because of shoulder surgery, were so inconsistent that Van Gundy benched them for most of the fourth quarter to have 6-foot-10 forward Hedo Turkoglu run the point.

The Magic had 20 turnovers, just 22 assists and no true ballhandler to make the Lakers pay for double-teaming Howard. With Nelson coming off the bench in place of reliable reserve Anthony Johnson and Alston having already said he wasn't pleased with his minutes in Game 1, Van Gundy might face another dilemma.

"We were just trying to see if we could get somebody out there who would make shots off of the double teams and off the pick-and-rolls and things like that," Van Gundy said. "I thought our guys fought hard, but we couldn't make enough plays. And the 20 turnovers crushed us."

The Lakers know the Magic, too, could change in a moment. One of the streakiest teams in the league all season, Orlando has shot well at home. It plays with a carefree attitude, and Bryant says that's reason to be wary.

"This is a very loosey-goosey team we're playing against," he said. "You seen some of the shots they hit. Those are tough shots - supposed to be tough shots. For them it's like shooting fish in a barrel. They're just thinking about Game 3, and so are we."

                            Pick: Magic

Seattle Storm at Indiana Fever (NA)

In the compressed WNBA schedule, both the Seattle Storm and the Indiana Fever opened the season with games on consecutive days. The Storm handled it much better than the Fever.

Seattle looks for a third straight victory Tuesday night when it starts a three-game trip in Indiana, where the Fever are looking to recover from a lopsided loss and an injury to star forward Tamika Catchings.

The Storm (2-0) opened the season by sweeping a home-and-home series with Sacramento, including an 80-70 victory Sunday. They believe the back-to-back games served as good preparation for this trip, which includes visits to Minnesota and Chicago.

"It's a tough schedule, but this is a good start," Seattle point guard Sue Bird said. "It was mentally challenging more than anything else. Hopefully that will help us going into the next three games."

Following a double-overtime loss Saturday at Atlanta to open the season, Indiana (0-2) returned home to lose 96-74 to Minnesota on Sunday. The Fever allowed 34 points in the first quarter on 92.9 percent shooting (13 for 14) - and the 96 points were the most ever scored by a visiting team in Indiana.

"We were flat the whole game," Indiana coach Lin Dunn said Sunday. "For a while, I thought we were still on the airplane."

Catchings sat out the second half Sunday with a right quadriceps injury and is listed as day to day.

Things won't get any easier for Indiana this week with visits by perennial MVP candidates Lauren Jackson of Seattle and Lisa Leslie of Los Angeles (Friday). Jackson averaged 24.0 points on 60.7 shooting over the weekend for the Storm.

She scored Seattle's first eight points Sunday in her first home game since July 12, when she left the club to go to Australia to prepare for the Beijing Olympics. Jackson also finished with four blocks.

"She looked good," Storm coach Brian Agler said. "She looked a little fatigued as the game went on. She's one of the best, if not the best. She can really get it going. Early on, she got us off to a great start."

Meanwhile, former Storm center Yolanda Griffith scored a team-high 17 points off the bench for Indiana on Sunday. Griffith started 30 games for Seattle last year after playing her first nine WNBA seasons with Sacramento.

"We didn't plan on starting 0-2," Griffith said. "But we're going to come back tomorrow and work hard and not dwell on it. We've got 32 more games to play this year. We could run off 15 in a row, you just never know. We are not going to worry about these two games."

Seattle swept both meetings from Indiana last season. Jackson and Catchings did not play for their respective teams in the Storm's 65-59 win at Indiana on July 18.

                              Pick: Storm
