      NBA Finals

Any NBA team that has to play JJ Redick 27:09 ain't winning an NBA title (he was 2-9 from floor, only one assist); Orlando guards don't get Howard the ball enough-- he had zero touches on last eight possessions in OT loss Sunday night. If you take away Lewis-Howard-Turkoglu, the Orlando role players were combined 8-31 from floor in Game 2. Lakers got 19 points (8-9 from floor), 10 boards from Odom, who was +10, the best mark in game. LA led its prior three series 2-1 after three games; in only other series where they won first two games, they lost at Utah in third game. Magic needs win or it'll be an early summer.

NBA Game of the Day: L.A. Lakers at Orlando Magic
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic (-4, 198): Matchup and trends

        Line movement

The line opened -4 at most shops, but some were also giving the Lakers 3.5 points before moving up with the rest of the pack to 4. The total has moved down a point from 199 to 198 at most books.

        The series

The Magic are a Courtney-Lee layup, or Pau Gasol goaltending call, from being tied up 1-1 in the Finals, but many experts believe that Orlando’s chance to win the series has vanished. Just three teams in Finals history have come back to win the championship after dropping the first two games on the road – although the last to do it was the Sunshine State’s other NBA team.

That five-point overtime win in Game 2 was the first time the Lakers hadn’t covered since losing Game 4 of the West finals. The extra five minutes allowed the Lakers to reach the century mark for the eighth game in a row. The under has cashed in six of those eight games, including both games against Orlando.
Orlando has won four playoff games in a row at home and has covered in each.

This will be L.A.’s first game east of the Mississippi since April 1. That might not seem like a big deal, but the Lakers’ internal clocks could be a tad off with the longer travel and time change.

        Unique lineup

Magic coach Stan Van Gundy went with an unusual lineup down the stretch in Game 2. While point guards Rafer Alston and Jameer Nelson combined for 43 minutes of play, Van Gundy didn’t have a point guard on the floor late in the game. Instead 6-foot-10 Hedo Turkoglu was at the controls for much of the fourth quarter.

Turkoglu and Rashard Lewis were much better in Game 2 than the series opener. Certainly if the pair combine for 56 points again as it did Sunday, you can expect a Magic victory. The two forwards were 9-for-18 from 3-point range, while the rest of the Magic were 1-for-12.

Don’t automatically expect the Magic to shoot better just because they are at home, as both their overall shooting percentage and 3-point percentage are worse in Orlando than on the road in the playoffs. The team is averaging more than four points more per game at Amway Arena than on the road in the postseason, however.

        Gasol coming up big

There’s probably little chance that anyone other than Kobe is named Finals MVP if the Lakers win the series, but an argument could be made that Pau Gasol has been the best player in the Finals.

The Spaniard struggled last year against Boston in the Finals but has been stellar against the Magic. He had 24 points (seven in overtime) and 10 boards in Game 2 and his defense on Dwight Howard has been terrific, usually just with single coverage.

"I think I've improved physically to be able to hold my ground a little better,” Gasol said to reporters. “Last year, I felt like I fell short at the end. I ran out of strength, I ran out of energy and couldn't deliver the way I wanted to.”

          Six-pack for Tuesday

-- Texas beat TCU 5-2, making it to their 33rd College World Series, so we get to see the kid who tossed 13 innings against Boston College.

-- Josh Outman has a great pitcher's name, better than Grant Balfour, Bob Walk or Homer Bailey, thats for sure. Lefty hitters are 7 for 56 this season against Outman this year, which is very impressive.

-- Outman was acquired by A's along with 2B Adrian Cardenas for Joe Blanton; Cardenas is hitting .388 in AA after struggling in a AAA trial.

-- In last two days, National League had games of 14-18-15 innings.

-- David Duval, Tom Lehman qualified for the US Open; David Love did not, and neither did John Daly.

-- MLB amateur draft is on MLB Network tonight at 6; first 3 rounds will be televised. This is first time this event has been on TV.

          ----------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

          13) How can anyone vote for Manny Ramirez for the All-Star Game in a season where he isn't playing in fifty consecutive games? He is fifth in the NL standings, which shows you how stupid it is that the fans get to vote for starters in a game whose outcome actually has meaning, which is another ridiculous thing that we'll save for another day.

          12) Nice security at the French Open; no wonder we had to bail their butts out in WWII. Federer should have decked the freakin' guy..

          11) Detroit's Armando Galarraga is 0-6, 6.37 in seven nighttime starts; he is 3-0, 3.50 in six daytime starts. Go figure.

          10) I got a flier in the mail from the NFL Shop Monday-- looks weird to see a Matt Cassel number 7 Chiefs' jersey. Here's guy who didn't play in college, did pretty well in his only year playing for Patriots but didn't get in the playoffs, and is now THE MAN in Kansas City. We'll see.

          9) There is a story in Miami paper this week that says when he was the coach of the Redskins, Joe Gibbs used to have his family tape its dinner conversations and send them over to his office, so he could keep up on their activities. Thats the life of a football coach. Not much home life.

          8) Texas Rangers re-upped manager Ron Washington for next year, good news for everyone. Washington is one of my favorites after he was great as a third base coach/infield coach with the A's, who should have hired him instead of Bob Geren, who always looks confused in the dugout. .

          7) Pirate pitcher Ross Ohlendorf had a former major leaguer as a college baseball coach at Princeton (Scott Bradley) and a former major leaguer as a pitching coach in high school (Lee Tunnell). Pretty lucky kid.

          6) If Blue Jays try to trade Roy Halladay, former used car dealer Bud Selig should block the deal, seeing as he is also baseball commissioner.

          5) Adding to the weirdness of Arizona's 9-6 win in 18 innings over San Diego Sunday: 1) after tying game with five runs in bottom of 9th inning, Padres never got another hit, in nine more innings, against a bullpen that has been horrendous all season 2) Padres had to use SS Wilson to pitch the 18th inning after they ran out of pitchers- he took the loss.

          4) Sean West allowed only three baserunners in eight innings as Florida beat the Giants, 4-0. It was the first major league win for young West.

          3) Pirates, Braves played late into the night in Atlanta Monday, before Braves scored an an infield hit in the 15th to win 7-6. Very close call at the plate decided the game; umpire Knight seemed to make correct call.

          2) Jose Contreras came back from his exile to minor leagues and blanked Detroit for eight innings, beating Tigers 6-1, giving Pale Hose a split in a Monday twinbill with Detroit, who still lead the AL Central. Contreras allowed only two baserunners in his eight innings on the mound.

          1) Have to laugh at some frontrunning jackasses in New York who called a radio talkshow Monday to suggest Mariano Rivera should be replaced as closer of the Bronx Bombers. This guy is one of the greatest closers of alltime, he is still damn good, but because he lost to the Rays Saturday, these idiots think Joba Chamberlain could do better. Wow. Send Rivera to Oakland-- we'd be glad to have him.

              SCOREBOARD
              Tuesday, June 9

N.Y. Yankees at Boston (7:10 p.m. EDT). The Yankees are 0-5 against their old rivals this season, but Alex Rodriguez missed all five games following hip surgery. New York has been on a tear since he returned to the lineup. A.J. Burnett pitches against Red Sox ace Josh Beckett, who flirted with a no-hitter in his previous start and has a 0.40 ERA in his past three outings.

              STARS

              Monday

-Jose Contreras, White Sox, allowed one hit in eight strong innings in his return to the majors as Chicago won the nightcap 6-1 to split a doubleheader with Detroit.

-Adam Lind, Blue Jays, homered twice and drove in four runs, and Toronto stopped a nine-game road losing streak by beating Texas 6-3.

-Sean West, Marlins, did not allow a hit until the seventh inning in his fourth career start and Florida beat Randy Johnson and San Francisco 4-0.

-David Ross, Braves, grounded an infield single to deep short that scored Jeff Francoeur and ended a game that lasted almost 5 hours as Atlanta edged Pittsburgh 7-6 in 15 innings.

-Kevin Kouzmanoff, Padres, tied his career-high with four RBIs and San Diego beat Arizona 6-3 one night after losing an 18-inning marathon against the Diamondbacks.

              SEEING THE BALL

David Ortiz's vision has checked out very well as the Boston Red Sox try to help him out of his season-long slump. The designated hitter received drops for dry eyes Monday, team spokesperson Pam Ganley said. Ortiz has two homers and 22 RBIs with a .197 batting average in 51 games. He has been dropped from third to sixth in the lineup, but has hit better recently. He has a six-game hitting streak with seven hits in 25 at-bats, raising his average from .185.

              STAYING PUT

The Texas Rangers are sticking with manager Ron Washington, at least through 2010. The Rangers led the AL West and were tied with the New York Yankees for the best record in the American League heading into Monday's games. The Rangers have led their division for 33 days, their longest stretch since 1999. Washington, in his third season with the team, is 187-193 with Texas and is the fourth-longest tenured manager in Rangers history. He was hired in 2006 with a two-year contract with team options for 2009 and 2010.

              DEMOLITION MAN

Part of Tiger Stadium's upper deck came crashing down Monday, nearly a decade after the final major league game there and hours after a judge refused to stop the historic ballpark's demolition. Crews used a backhoe to tear away chunks of the upper deck along the third-base line, causing debris to rain down as dozens of people gathered nearby to witness the destruction of a stadium that opened in 1912 as Navin Field and hosted pro baseball for 87 years.

              SPARKLERS

The fireworks are coming back for the Washington Nationals, days after debris from some pyrotechnics fell on the local fire chief as he watched a game. District of Columbia Fire Chief Dennis Rubin ordered a halt to the fireworks after Sunday's game with the New York Mets. Team and fire officials met on Monday to review safety procedures. Authorities say the fireworks can resume Tuesday when the Nationals host the Cincinnati Reds.

              LAUNCHING PAD

There were five or more homers hit at Yankee Stadium for the 10th time this season in New York's 5-3 win over Tampa Bay. There have been 105 homers in 29 games at the new ballpark, a sharp increase from the 160 last season at the original Yankee Stadium, and 63 have been hit to right and right-center.

              SPEAKING

"If this was the 1980s, (none) of these guys would be in the big leagues right now, because if you hit .210-.230 and you can't execute, I don't think you should be out here. When you can't bunt, hit-and-run, squeeze and move the guy over, you better hit 40 home runs and drive in 140.'' - Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen after his team lost 5-4 in the opener of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers.

              SEASONS

              June 9

1998 - Cecil Fielder of the Angels and Yamil Benitez of the Diamondbacks each hit grand slams in the same inning in Anaheim's 10-8 win over Arizona. It was the first time both teams hit grand slams in the same inning since 1992.

2008 - Ken Griffey Jr. became the sixth player in baseball history to reach 600 homers with a drive off Mark Hendrickson in the first inning of the Cincinnati Reds' 9-4 victory over the Florida Marlins. Griffey joined Barry Bonds, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth, Willie Mays and Sammy Sosa as the only players to reach the mark.

2008 - Nick Swisher homered from both sides of the plate and the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 7-5. Swisher hit a solo home run from the right side in the fourth inning against Glen Perkins. Swisher turned around and connected as a lefty for a two-run shot in the sixth against Jesse Crain.

Today's birthdays: Mike Fontenot 29; Randy Winn 35.

Hot Lines: Tuesday's best MLB bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-145, 9.5)

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees normally don't need additional motivation when they meet, but for the first time in more than a year, first place in the AL East will be on the line when the teams meet this week.

The Yankees hope to avoid a six straight loss this season to their longtime rivals Tuesday night when the teams open a three-game series at Fenway Park.

Boston (33-24) hasn't won six in a row against New York (34-23) in a single season since a seven-game run in 1974. The Red Sox swept a three-game series at Fenway in late April and then won a two-game set in the Bronx in early May.

"Obviously we would like to get payback and say all that good stuff, but we have to go out and play well," New York's Johnny Damon said.

A potent offense has been the catalyst for Boston's success this season against the Yankees. The Red Sox are batting .303 with eight homers and 14 doubles in the five games while New York's starting pitchers have compiled a 6.58 ERA.

New York, however, should be a much more formidable team this week with Alex Rodriguez in the lineup and Mark Teixeira recovered from an early season slump.

Teixeira is batting .364 with 13 homers and 36 RBIs in 28 games since Rodriguez made his season debut May 8.

The Yankees will send A.J. Burnett (4-2, 4.69 ERA) to the mound as he tries to win his third straight start. He allowed three runs and eight hits over seven innings in a 12-3 victory over Texas last Tuesday.

Burnett is 5-0 with a 3.52 ERA in nine starts against the Red Sox, but struggled April 25 in his first time facing them as a Yankee. The right-hander gave up eight runs and eight hits - including two homers - in five innings of a 16-11 loss. He didn't factor in the decision.

Josh Beckett (6-2, 4.09) started for the Red Sox in that game and gave up eight runs and 10 hits - two homers - in five innings as well. Although he didn't factor in that victory, he improved to 5-1 with a 4.34 ERA in his last seven starts against the Yankees after pitching six innings in a 7-3 victory on May 5.

                      Pick: Red Sox

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (-160, 9.5)

With his team struggling at the plate, Detroit manager Jim Leyland followed the lead of Chicago counterpart Ozzie Guillen at motivating his players.

After splitting a doubleheader, the Tigers and White Sox continue their five-game series in Chicago on Tuesday.

Detroit (31-26) opened this series with a 5-4 win Monday afternoon, but then managed just one hit over eight innings against Jose Contreras in a 6-1 loss in the nightcap. The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak, was the third time in five contests the Tigers were held to two or fewer runs and left Leyland frustrated with his team's lack of offense.

"We didn't do anything to challenge (Contreras) at all," he said. "We had terrible at-bats all night long. Terrible. Sickening at-bats if you want to know the truth."

Detroit has scored 27 runs and hit .222 over its last eight games. Miguel Cabrera was 0 for 7 in the twinbill and is 4 for 29 (.138) in his last 10 games.

While Leyland has the night to stew, Guillen got his point across following the afternoon loss, which dropped Chicago (27-31) to 2-6 on its 12-game homestand. The White Sox committed three errors and were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. They had scored 21 runs, were shut out three times and hitting .200 in the eight games before regrouping Monday night.

"If this was the 1980s, (none) of these guys would be in the big leagues right now, because if you hit .210-.230 and you can't execute, I don't think you should be out here," Guillen said."When you can't bunt, hit-and-run, squeeze and move the guy over, you better hit 40 home runs and drive in 140."

The White Sox responded to Guillen's harsh words with 10 hits - three each by Alexei Ramirez and Jermaine Dye - in the victory, and Jim Thome had a two-run homer. Dye was a combined 5 for 8 Monday and is hitting 10 for 20 with two homers, two doubles and four RBIs in five games this season against the Tigers.

Chicago will try to win back-to-back games for the first time during this homestand as they hand the ball to Mark Buehrle (6-2, 2.91 ERA), who took a perfect game into the seventh against Detroit on May 7.

Buehrle has won his last three decisions against Detroit and is 14-8 with a 2.86 ERA lifetime.

                      Pick: White Sox

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                      Streaking and Slumping Pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

                      Matt Cain (San Francisco Giants)

The last time Matt Cain took the mound, he admittedly gained inspiration from an impressive milestone that may not be repeated for awhile. Now, he'll attempt to set a personal record by winning a sixth consecutive decision.

The right-hander looks to keep pace for the NL lead in victories Tuesday night when the Giants open a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Cain (7-1, 2.27 ERA) pitched the second game of a doubleheader on Thursday after Randy Johnson became the 24th pitcher to win 300 games in a 5-1 win at Washington. The next closest active pitcher to the milestone is Philadelphia's 46-year-old Jamie Moyer, who has 250 victories.

Cain followed up Johnson's achievement by yielding one run and five hits with seven strikeouts in five innings before rain halted a 4-1 win over the Nationals in the top of the sixth.

"It motivated me," Cain told the Giants' official Web site. "To get the 300th win for R.J. was huge, so I was thinking, 'OK, we've got a lot of momentum. R.J. got that done for him. Let's keep it going on our side.'"

Cain, though, has put together his own outstanding run recently, going 5-0 with a 1.60 ERA in his last six starts to match his career high for consecutive winning decisions. He's also in position to tie Colorado's Jason Marquis for the league lead in wins.

                      Chris Carpenter (St. Louis Cardinals)

The St. Louis Cardinals are in the midst of their longest losing streak of the season. They hope another superb outing from Chris Carpenter and a visit to the Florida Marlins can stop it.

Carpenter looks to continue his stellar run Tuesday night when St. Louis opens a three-game series at Florida.

La Russa now looks to Carpenter (4-0, 0.71 ERA) to help the Cardinals while he attempts to extend his career-best start.

The right-hander was outstanding Thursday, throwing a three-hitter in a 3-1 win over Cincinnati. It was his 26th career complete game and first since Sept. 11, 2006.

"That's just him," La Russa told the Cardinals' official Web site. "He's really, really good. That's what happens when you're really good. You can do stuff like that."

Carpenter has been stellar against the Marlins (28-31), too. He's 3-0 with a 1.03 ERA in his last four starts against them, but hasn't faced them since a 2005 victory at Miami.

                      Slumping

                      Dontrelle Willis (Detroit Tigers)

Dontrelle Willis (1-3, 6.84) will counter for Detroit, trying to end a personal three-start losing streak. The left-hander struggled with his control Thursday, walking a season-high five and allowing five runs over 2 1-3 innings in a 6-3 defeat to Boston despite not giving up a hit.

"I threw a couple good pitches and I didn't get the calls, and I let myself get flustered," Willis said. "It was just mental."

Willis has no record and a 12.00 ERA in three lifetime starts against the White Sox, walking 12 in just six innings. He also hyperextended his right knee in his most recent start against them on April 11, 2008, that caused him to miss a month.

                      Brian Bannister (Kansas City Royals)

The Royals seek a good performance from Brian Bannister - something they haven't gotten lately from the right-hander.

Bannister (4-3, 4.97) was 4-1 with a 2.79 ERA in his first seven starts, but he has given up 15 runs in 8 2-3 innings while losing his last two outings. He didn't get out of the fourth inning of a 9-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Wednesday.

"This one was all my fault," Bannister said.

Bannister has been much better against the Indians, going 4-1 with a 2.40 ERA in seven career starts. He is 3-0 in four appearances at Progressive Field and has not allowed an earned run in three of them.

                      Debuting

                      Doug Mathis (Texas Rangers)

Doug Mathis (0-0, 0.00 ERA) is expected to make his first start of the season for Texas in place of Brandon McCarthy, who went on the disabled list with a stress fracture in his right shoulder blade.

Mathis, who went 1-1 with an 8.83 ERA in four starts for the Rangers in 2008, pitched a scoreless inning of relief at Boston on Sunday in his first appearance since being recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

The right-hander will face Toronto for the first time.

Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets [7:10 PM ET]

Phillies: The Phillies had the best road record in baseball last year and they have the best away mark this season at 21-8. Philadelphia has won 13 of its past 17 road contests. They face a huge challenge against Johan Santana. The Phillies will try to match the All-Star lefty with young southpaw J.A. Happ. In three starts since joining the Phillies’ starting rotation, Happ is 2-0 with a 2.45 ERA. Opponents are batting just .181 against him. Happ threw seven shutout innings in a 5-1 victory over San Diego on Wednesday in his last start. Happ allowed just four hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Happ threw 112 pitches in seven innings, his longest stint. The Phillies are 6-2 in Happ’s eight career starts. The Phillies would be riding a 10-game winning streak if closer Brad Lidge didn’t blow two road games against the Dodgers. Lidge has a 7.27 ERA.

The Phillies are 8-2 in their last 10 NL East matchups.
The Phillies are 12-3-1 to the under in their past 16 games.

Key Injuries - Brett Myers (hip) is on the DL.

                            PROJECTED SCORE: 3

Mets (-$1.65, O/U 8):The Mets could be feeling the pinch of missing star shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado, both of whom are injured. New York went just 2-4 in a six-game road trip against the Pirates and Nationals. New York hit only one home run during the six-game road swing. The Mets have not homered in their last three games. New York entered this week ranked third-from-the-bottom in the majors in home runs with 34. This lack of power puts added pressure on ace Johan Santana, who lost 3-1 to Pittsburgh in his last start. Santana, though, is having another dominant season leading the National League in ERA and placing third in strikeouts. The southpaw is 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA in six starts against the Phillies. Santana beat Philadelphia, 1-0, on May 6 with a masterful performance giving up two hits in seven innings, while fanning 10.

The Mets are 10-2 with Santana on the mound when facing a team with a winning record.
The Under has cashed 9 of the last 12 times Santana has pitched.

Key Injuries - Jose Reyes (calf) is on the DL.
Carlos Delgado (hip) is on the DL.

PROJECTED SCORE: 5 (UNDER - Total Play of the Day)

Los Angeles Lakers at Orlando Magic [ABC | 9:00 PM ET]

Lakers: Since the NBA went to a 2-3-2 format in 1985, 11 of 12 teams winning the first two games have gone on to capture the championship. That speaks well for the Lakers, up 2-0. They’ve won their past four playoff games by a combined 61 points. Led by Kobe Bryant, the Lakers have out-shot the Magic averaging 46 percent from the floor to the Magic’s 35 percent. Bryant has scored 69 points in the two games, making 26-of-56 shots from the floor while sinking 16 of 18 free throws. Los Angeles is 23-9-2 (71 percent) ATS in their last 34 games as an underdog. The Lakers have held Dwight Howard in check with a swarming, suffocating inside defense. Howard has taken just 16 shots from the field, sinking six. But in Game 2, Howard did a nice job kicking the ball back to outside threats Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu.

The Under is 11-5 in the Lakers’ last 16 road games.
The Lakers are 3-10 ATS in their last 13 games following a straight-up victory..

                              Key Injuries - None.

                              PROJECTED SCORE: 97

Magic (-4, O/U 198): After being out-rebounded 55-41 in Game 1, Orlando came back to have a 44-35 rebounding edge in Game 2. The Magic showed they could match up physically to the taller Lakers. The key question is can Orlando match up mentally? The Lakers have the momentum. The pressure now is on the Magic, which has to shake off a frustrating Game 2 overtime loss in which Courtney Lee missed a tough layup at the end of regulation. Rashard Lewis and Hedo Turkoglu stepped up their perimeter shooting combing to make nine-of-18 shots in Game 2. However, Orlando’s guards – Rafer Alston, Jameer Nelson, J.J. Redick and Lee - shot only five-for-23 from the field, while committing 20 turnovers. Orlando coach Stan Van Gundy has to decide if he wants to stick with Alston as his main point guard, or go with Nelson, who is back healthy. Regardless, Orlando’s guards must play better.

Orlando is 5-1 ATS in its last six playoff games when favored.
The Under has cashed in 13 of Orlando’s last 19 home contests.

                              Key Injuries - None.

PROJECTED SCORE: 101(Side Play of the Day)
