How great would it be for baseball for a $22 million team to win the WS? Yanks, Mets, Bosox keep spending millions of dollars only to watch Florida win a title every few years with young ballplayers.

ESPN's Peter Gammons says the three-way negotiations between the Red Sox, Marlins and Pirates are close to dead.
That according to a source close to the negotiations. SI.com's Jon Heyman says Ramirez has already approved a trade to the Marlins should the Red Sox complete one.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Pirates have agreed to the prospects they'd receive in a Manny Ramirez-Jason Bay-Jeremy Hermida deal.
That was supposed to be the biggest remaining hurdle. If this is correct, then talks are anything but dead. WPGB's Rocco DeMaro says that, with the Pirates now content, the biggest hurdle could be dollars for the Marlins.

Manny approves trade to any team; Dodgers back in mix
The Los Angels Dodgers have re-entered the Manny Ramirez Sweepstakes, SI.com has learned. The much-discussed deal to send the embattled superstar to the Marlins has hit a slight snag, leading the Red Sox to pursue other possibilities.
The Marlins deal may not be dead. But the Dodgers could become a real player here and knock out Florida at the last minute. According to people familiar with the talks, the Dodgers have offered young outfielder Andre Ethier, but Boston is believed to prefer the ultra-talented Matt Kemp.
It won't be easy to put together a deal with a different team on such short notice. But the Dodgers were talking a few days ago to the Red Sox, before it became apparent that Boston's focus was on the Marlins.
The Red Sox, who appear motivated to trade Ramirez, have spent most of their time on the Marlins over the past 24 hours. But sources say the Dodgers have always remained interested.
The Marlins are believed to be dissatisfied with their end of the potential three-way trade that also involved the Pirates. In that scenario, Ramirez goes to the Marlins, star outfielder Jason Bay to Boston and outfielder Jeremy Hermida and prospects to Pittsburgh.
However, the Dodgers have a lot of young talent to offer. They appeared to be out of the running just a day ago, but they have re-emerged as the Red Sox continue their efforts to get a deal done.
The Marlins, Phillies and Dodgers were the three teams that expressed sincere interest in Ramirez, as reported first on SI.com.
Ramirez has approved a trade to go to Florida, Philadelphia, Los Angels or anywhere else, SI.com has learned. In return for Ramirez signing off on a deal, the acquiring team will agree to drop the two club options for $20-million apiece for 2009 and '10 in his current deal.
So all that needs to be done is to agree on the players. Of course, that is the tough part.
While the Marlins scenario isn't yet dead, it appears to be ailing, at the very least. Word is, Marlins people aren't happy with their end of things. While they were to get Ramirez, they didn't want to surrender outfield prospect Mike Stanton or pitching propsect Ryan Tucker.
Dodgers manager Joe Torre is known to love Ramirez from Torre's days in New York managing against him, and Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, a Bostonian, has long been enamored of Red Sox players and can't be counted out now. Like Florida, the Dodgers don't want to add payroll, so Boston would have to agree to pay the $7 million remaining on Ramirez's deal but there remains some cynicism as to whether the Dodgers could pull off such a big deal with time running out.

With the three-way deal between the Pirates, Red Sox, and Marlins falling through, an MLB.com source says that the Rays are going to acquire right-handed hitting outfielder Jason Bay for Minor League prospects including shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann. The Rays have not confirmed the deal.

A source told SI.com's Jon Heyman that not only are the Dodgers not offering Matt Kemp for Manny Ramirez, but that they're looking to part with prospects instead of Andre Ethier.
So both Andruw Jones and Ethier could ride the pine for the rest of the season? That makes little sense. For what it's worth, Heyman says Ramirez has approved deals to the Marlins, Dodgers and any other team.

Looks as if Raul Ibanez is staying in Seattle. Just when it appeared that the Blue Jays and Mariners were close to a trade for the Seattle outfielder, the Mariners apparently had second thoughts. According to an official of one team that spoke with those clubs Thursday, this would have been a 2-for-1 deal involving all major-league players.

A high level Rays official denied that a deal for Jason Bay with the Pirates was done.
One lone MLB.com beat reporter is still the only one saying that a deal is done, while many others are saying talks are still ongoing. According to the previous report, Bay is on the way to Tampa Bay for Reid Brignac and Jeff Niemann
