Report: Indians agree to deal Sabathia to Brewers for minor leaguers

It looks like the next time C.C. Sabathia takes the mound he'll be donning a Milwaukee Brewers jersey.
The Brewers and the Cleveland Indians agreed to a deal for the reigning AL Cy Young on Sunday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The newspaper reports the deal is contingent on paperwork being finished and the exchange of medical records.
Cleveland would get Double-A outfielder Matt LaPorta, who is hitting .288 with 20 homers and 66 RBIs in 84 games for Huntsville, and two other minor leaguers in return, according to the Journal Sentinel. The two other players do not include top prospects Alcides Escobar or Mat Gamel.
The Brewers wanted Sabathia on their pitching staff in time to get him two starts before the All-Star break, according to multiple media reports. Sabathia, who is 6-8 with a 3.83 ERA this season, could debut in Milwaukee against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Brewers general manager Doug Melvin told the Journal Sentinel on Saturday that a proposal was on table and he awaiting word from Indians GM Mark Shapiro.
"Mark said he'd be in touch with me," said Melvin. "I'm sure they've got to think through everything."
Laporta was scratched from Huntsville's lineup Sunday, another indication the deal was close.
Milwaukee has been considered the front-runner in the Sabathia sweepstakes. The Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays were among other teams vying for his services.

Will it be a steal if they do not sign Sabathia after this year? I know nothing about LaPorta, other than what I have read and heard...granted, he is a prospect but all reports are that he is very good.
Do you remember this trade? I am sure on the day it was made a lot of us thought it was a steal for the Expos as we never heard pf Phillips, Lee or Sizemore. Turned out to be a steal for Cleveland...
The Cleveland Indians figured they had no chance to win this season, even with ace Bartolo Colon. For the Montreal Expos, this might be their last chance.
The disappointing Indians traded Colon to the surprising Expos for first baseman Lee Stevens and top prospect Brandon Phillips in a six-player deal Thursday night.
Cleveland sent Colon, minor league pitcher Tim Drew and cash to the Expos for Stevens and three prospects: pitcher Cliff Lee, outfielder Grady Sizemore and Phillips, a shortstop.Three Jack's Record http://www.bettorschat.com/forums/sh...10#post1323910

That enhances the Brew Crew chances of taking a NL title....all they got to do now, is back up he and sheets et al/ with some runs....
gonna get interesting.......also paves the way for some AL teams to possibly get an extra win or 2 not having to face him......IMO
Don't make me go Cajun on your Ass!

That said, you can never call a deal this early when it's a 3-for-1, especially when the 1 is a pitcher.Three Jack's Record http://www.bettorschat.com/forums/sh...10#post1323910

If Milwaukee doesn't make the playoffs and at least win one series, this is a bad deal.
La Porta is the best power hitter in the minor leagues. He already has 20 HRs this year and hit a ton last year. He's ahead of the amazing pace Ryan Braun set.
Sabathia will not be re-signed. He wants a seven year deal and Milwaukee isn't idiotic enough to do that. They are in a "win-now" mode as they will lose Sheets to free agency in the off season and probably won't sign Prince Fielder to a long term deal.
If Sabathia takes them to the promised land it's a good deal but they are taking a huge risk on their future to give away a potential superstar for a player for only one half season.
I think Cleveland is the one who made the steal. CC was going to be gone and they get an incredible prospect for him

Originally posted by Three JackI am not saying it is a bad trade for Milwaukee, but to call it a steal now I think is very premature. I believe it is a good trade for both teams.

The Indians worked that trade to perfection, it was a strong offseason market and Montreal who had a good farm system, needed a high-profile guy to help sell the team. Grady Sizemore was a can't miss prospect when that trade went down, and Brandon Phillips was considered to have just as high of a ceiling when the Indians acquired him. Cliff Lee was somewhat of an after thought in the deal but he's obviously proven himself this year.
Again I think the brewers made a heck of a trade. IF they can re-sign him
To anyone that knows anything about prospects who do you think gave up more, The Mets for Santana ? or the Brewers for CC ?Last edited by DDP713; 07-06-2008, 08:10 PM.
