No way no how I would EVER move Papelbon at this juncture back to the starting rotation.
Gagne is good but hasn't proven he can fill the role in Boston.
I will give to benfit of the doubt to Sox management, but I sure hope they keep Papelbon where he right now as long as he continues to do the job.

Boston's Pen is absolutely disgusting now. Gabbard was a nice young arm but if Clement can come back and do something before the year end it will make it even better now.

Boston should not lose the AL East race now.

          New York Yankees Updated:07/31/2007
Sources report to Newsday that the Yankees are one of four finalists to acquire Rangers reliever Eric Gagne before Tuesday's 4 p.m. non-waivers trade deadline. They are trying desperately to upgrade their bullpen, and the Devil Rays' Dan Wheeler and Al Reyes could be fallback options if the Yankees can't land Gagne.

The San Diego Padres on Tuesday obtained some depth for the stretch drive, acquiring utility man Rob Mackowiak from the Chicago White Sox and third baseman Morgan Ensberg from the Houston Astros.

Red Sox convince Rangers closer Gagne to go to Boston

The Boston Red Sox have added to baseball's best bullpen, completing a trade with the Texas Rangers for closer Eric Gagne, sources tell CBS SportsLine.com.

Gagne had a partial no-trade clause in his contract, and the Red Sox were not one of the teams among the 12 listed that Gagne would accept as a trade destination. To finalize this trade, Gagne had to waive the clause.

Gagne is 2-0 with a 2.16 ERA and 16 saves in 17 opportunities for the Rangers, and he has appeared in 34 games. His presence in the Boston bullpen, assuming he stays healthy, could tip the balance of power in the AL decidedly toward the Red Sox for the stretch run.

The Sox also continue to talk with the Chicago White Sox about outfielder Jermaine Dye. The Chicago outfielder, a free agent following this season, would help boost a Boston lineup that has been a little short this season because of injuries to David Ortiz.

Ortiz has been playing, but has only 16 homers and 61 RBI in 95 games for the Red Sox.

The RedSox got Gagne about an hour ago. The Yankees get Betemit, a back up infielder for one of their only decent middle relievers.

I didn't say this year. Maybe next year if they keep Gagne. MAYBE!

Do you not remember what the doctors said about his shoulder in the off season? Do you not remember that he was planned to move to the starting rotation before they realized they had no other option?

                          • The San Francisco Giants traded veteran righthander Matt Morris to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for outfielder Rajai Davis and a player to be named.

Morris, who made his final start in a Giants uniform Sunday vs. the Florida Marlins, owns a 7-7 mark with a 4.35 ERA in 21 starts for the Giants this season.

The 26-year-old Davis is hitting .271 (13-for-48) with two doubles, two RBI and five stolen bases in 24 games for the Pirates. The righthanded hitting speedster was recalled from Class AAA Indianapolis on June 5 and made 12 starts in center field for Pittsburgh.

This one is a bit odd...no? It's a salary dump...but Pitts takes it on? Am I missing something?

                              • The Boston bullpen is the sickest in baseball right now after todays trade. It is nice to see a team that knows what they are doing! Now go out and kick the shit out of Baltimore!
