Well, here is one trade. One would think that Gagne must be close behind as the Yanks are not in position to give up pitching.

The Dodgers and Yankees have agreed in principle on a trade that would send reliever Scott Proctor to the Dodgers for infielder Wilson Betemit, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

The Dodgers, who have a 5.61 bullpen ERA since the All-Star break, have been in on a number of relievers but zeroed in on Proctor over the last 24 hours.

The Yankees view Betemit as another first-base/DH/bench option for this year, and a potential third-base replacement for Alex Rodriguez next year.

          One more....

The first trade on deadline day was a small one.

The Red Sox dealt Joel Pineiro, who they had recently designated for assignment, to the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later.

Pineiro, signed as a free agent in January after six seasons in Seattle, was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox. The 28-year-old was on the disabled list from June 28 until July 13 with a sprained right ankle.

Pineiro, who is back on the 40-man roster, is 59-56 with a 4.50 ERA in his career over 216 games, including 159 starts.

The deadline to make non-waiver trades is 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Doesn't make sense unless they are making room for someone.

San Diego papers are reporting that Padres are working with Houston on getting Lamb and/or Loretta for some Double A prospects. This surely won't excite any Padre fans...anything less than a big bat will just be window dressing.

The Cubs reportedly still have a shot at acquiring Eric Gagne, who could be used as a closer over Ryan Dempster.
The Journal News' Peter Abraham believes the Red Sox and the Cubs are the favorites, with the Red Sox offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard. If Boston moves Gabbard, it means Jon Lester would get to stick around as the team's fifth starter.

The Braves continue to wait on the Mark Teixeira deal to be formalized before finalizing their trade for Octavio Dotel.
Sources told Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown that neither deal had any chance of falling through. The Braves are trading Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz and a second pitcher for Teixeira and Ron Mahay, plus Kyle Davies to Kansas City for Dotel.

That's the first I've heard about the Cubs being interested in Gagne....

I know Dempster isnt' a huge Pinella favorite, but I didnt' think they'd go after Gagne.

                        Marmol in the 7th
Wood in the 8th (if healthy...which is a big ***)
                        and Gagne in the 9th

                        That would be pretty impressive.

They need a closer more than anybody

See I dont' agree with that though....we need a Right Handed bat and a lefty reliever more then a closer IMO.

Dempster is alright...I'm ok with him.

Marmol is waiting in the wings...closer of the future.

Wood is a week from joining the club...he could do it as well.

Give me J. Dye before Gagne and I'm happy.

I am thrilled he is gone;they should never have wasted their money and acquired him in the first place.
I would love for them to unload Mirabelli also if possible;surely they can do better tha having a catcher who cannot hit his weight and whose one and only claim to fame is that he can catch Wakefield's knuckleball
