CHICAGO -- Slumping Barry Bonds was scratched from the San Francisco Giants' starting lineup Monday night, giving him a day to rest his aching legs.
Bonds was originally listed in the cleanup spot and left field for the opener of the four-game series against the Chicago Cubs.
Bonds was in a season-worst 0-for-20 slump. He has 751 homers, four shy of tying Hank Aaron's record, but hasn't homered since July 3 at Cincinnati.
Over the weekend, Bonds played 30 innings as the Giants got swept in a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
"It's an embarrassment for me to be wearing this [expletive deleted] uniform 'cause of the way I'm playing. There, that's it. Now go away," Bonds said after going hitless in the Giants' 5-3 loss to the Dodgers on Sunday.
Then he overturned the cart as he walked through the clubhouse, a rare public display of emotion with his chase of Aaron's home run record at a standstill.
Giants manager Bruce Bochy suggested his star player might be too "pull conscious."
When asked about that, Bonds said, "That's not it."
Does he need a day off? "That's not it, either."
