Doesn't Detroit and St Louis remind you a lot of the White Sox last year. Sox just fell apart and barely hung on to get in and than steam rolled through the playoffs. I see the same thing happening this year.

Like someone said pitching wins playoffs and the Yankees just don't have it. They had a pretty good line up last year (besides Bernie Williams who had no business being in the line up) and look what happend.

Angels took 6 of 10 vs White Sox last season. The White Sox won in 5 in the playoffs.

The Red Sox took 4 of 7 from the White Sox during last season. Then were swept by the White Sox in the playoffs.

It's a scenario that's repeated season after season.

What happens during the season doesn't mean shit in the playoffs.

Why? 69 Mets were given no chance vs Baltimore. 73 Mets were given no chance vs the A's. They lost in 7. No one gave Florida any chance vs Yanks. No one gave D'backs a chance vs Yanks. The list goes on and on.

Pitching wins baseball games. The Tigers have the best pitchers of all the teams in the playoffs. All other teams have pitching weaknesses.

Yanks are going to be very tough to beat. While their pitching is suspect, the additions of Abreu and Damon make them so much more diffiuclt to pitch too than a year ago. They are a much more patient team at the plate and rarely will a starter go more than 7 innings, meaing they will tax a bullpen pretty quickly.

In the NL, I don't think the Mets are a World Series caliber team in a normal year, but the NL is so weak, I will be disappointed if they do not make it...their pitching is falling apart at the worst possible time. Thanksfully their bullpen is very strong. Mets make the series unless the Astros make the playoffs. If they do, they make the series.

Yanks over Mets (or Astros) in 5 or 6 (if it is the Astros, 6 or 7)..

I will be shocked if the young guns of Detroit can withstand the pressure of pitching in Yankee Stadium in October.

Wang is reliable but the 4th starter with wright or lidle neither is consistent or proven. As for the Mets Pedro is a big concern I'd keep a close eye on him he's had some awful early innings this year. The others El duque, maine and glavine been very good lately. Then again if Traschel pitches game 4 who knows, maybe he'll keep gettin a ton of run support.
Dirk, how can you say RJ and Mussina are old but then bank on Glavine and El Duque? El Duque must be pushing 50!

There is one thing you are forgetting one thing-Yanks have proven they can defeat Tigers during the season without some of their best players and are playing much better now than the Tigers are.
Sure anything is possible, but offensively I just don't see any pitching staff containing them enough to defeat them in a series.
Not to repeat, but that lineup is awesome, and no offense to the Tigers, but their offense pales overall in comparison.
ps Look at some of the Reds teams of the 70's-so so pitching but an awesome offense, amd they won some WS.
