I don't think there was one tony. That's my point. The pitching needed to step up W/OUT him and they didn't. I'm not by any means taking the blame off them. They have sucked but i think they put TOO MUCH trust in Tek when he was there, now he's gone and they are fucken lost w/out him there.

The remainder of the staff other than Schilling, Wakefield(when he is healthy) and Papelbon are questionable and/or very experienced.
Perhaps it could be argued that Varitek held together this very tenuous staff as well as he could(and pretty well) while he was catching every day.
Then when he went down, the problems were no longer masked, the performances got worse simply because Lopez and Mirabelli simply don't have the overall talents of Varitek of calling the game and holding the staff together.
If one accepts this argument, then the real problem lies with front office for burying their hands in the sand and deluding themselves and fans into thinking that Sox pitching was good enough to compete at the highest level.
ps What is very troubling to me (and I don't relate it to Varitek is the apparent demise of Timlin;he has been horrendous of late with game on the line,; if he is all washed up, it would be another crushing blow, as the other pitchers who would be used to replace him are far worse.

very well said and that is what i was alluding to...that there were serious cracks in the foundation before this......

I agree. The pitching, especially mid-relief, STINKS. The staff wasn't put together very well, and the relief is the biggest example.

                    gosh,

i find that real hard to believe....that a professional pitcher (who happen to be among the most egotistical and competitive athletes) rely on a catcher to hold them together......Is a guy like Lester and DelCarmen more comfortable with Tek??? ABSOLUTELY .....

I also would have not inserted Lopez midseason (unfamiliarity with staff)....but apparently the coaches must think that is overrated and played him over Mirabelli......

Either way.....we stink at the moment!!

Yes, we suck and i can't really blame Lopez. He was forced into a tough spot with a staff he didn't know.

Nothing is black and white, and I will be the first to admit it.
Perhaps in the long run the loss of Varitek will be a good thing, because no matter whether one thinks he was instrumental in holding this team together or not, the fact remains the team is LOSING and that is the bottom line.
Hopefully, this collapse of late will tell them that not all of the teams are of the NL, on which Sox feasted upon, and that Sox will have to make a lot of changes to get back on track.
I would say this even if Varitek and Wakefield return and Sox again start winning or even make the playoffs.
Perhaps the best way to look at the nasty turn of events is to take the "glass is half full" approach and make a positive out of it.

Texas had 2 hits yesterday and scored 3 runs & won!

What's your point? The discussion has been as a whole wins/losses since he has been here and gone. One bad game can be pointed to with every team this year. Look at your ASStros for example!

                            Roger should have came here!

Yeah, but his era would be like 6 because Tek is out.

Honestly, he should have gone to the Yanks, now looking at things. What a way to go out, shoring up the Yanks pitching, then winning one more WS in Yankee Stadium. But who knows.........

And this thread isn't about the Astros and their pathetic offense. I have NEVER EVER seen a team as incompetant as them when it comes to scoring runs. They are incapable of hitting a freaking fly ball with a guy on 3rd/less than 2 out. They could be burried by Weds. nite if they don't win 2/3 in Cincy.
