I think QB & Catcher have always been used in the same comparison and i think for good reason.

In 1 sense I agree and that is why the catcher is referred to as the Qb in baseball, but and this is a BIG BUT....

the Qb directs the offense when he touches the ball on everyplay and has a greater hand in the scoring whereas when the catcher touches the ball it is not effecting or directing the scoring of his team....

I think them touching the ball and in baseball directing the pitchers (to a much much much lesser degree) is where the similarity ends

Your funny....when all else fails kick the cubs fan. Hope it makes you feel better.

It's friggin hilarious to hear you "NOT" make excuses for the Red Sox slide when Veritek went out, but yet when I made the same claims when Lee went out I got dogged.

        I mean really....

the red sox weren't going anywhere anyway.

        Better luck next year.

You weren't gonna win the WS with Veritek healthy, let alone without him.

He's important...I will give you that, but I think taking Manny or Ortiz out of the lineup is far worse.
I don't. I think the Yanks would have been much worse off losing Rivera or Mussina instead of Sheff or Matsui. Offense is much easier to replace than pitching, defense, and a QB (Catcher) on the field!

              Well said

This is not to deflect the IMPORTANCE of a catcher...but there are too many other things not going the Red Sox way to point the finger squarely on that injury.

I didn't say it was exact, just about as close as you can get. If a QB calls a bad game and makes bad decisions and can lead to turnovers and scoring for the other team. The same can be said for a catcher who is clueless (Lopez). It can lead to bad decision making and runs for the opponent. Can the pitcher shrug him off? Sure, they have been a ton BUT ... They are visibly frustrated from it and the rythym has been WAAAAAY off!

                      Rivera yes...definetly.

But if the offense is so easy to replace, how come Boston couldn't?

Javy Lopez is obviously not the answer.

The Yankees as much as I hate to say it...went out and GOT the offense to replace Sheff and Matsui.

That's what I don't get...why didn't Boston spend the money? Honestly...Not dogging or looking for a "fight" I am honestly confused....

Did they under-estimate the loss of Veritek?

                        rook,

in game situations are far different than being on the bench. i mean its not even a discussion. let me say this. catchers who are good have "it". what i mean by "it" is the smarts to read a hitter. from AB to ab. ie where he stands in the box,his body language @ the plate, if on said day the hitter is being aggressive or conservative in his approach. these things are unteachable. all this helps the pitcher greatly. that is what varitek has that many dont. its irreplaceable. you cant coach it, you cant call it from the bench you cant just throw some catcher in their and expect everything to be just fine.

John, What is their record since Lee's return???

The Cubs are much further away from the Little League WS than one player and that was my point. PLEASE ... That is/was also friggin' hilarious!

Yeah, but doesn't the manager/pitching coach also call a lot of the pitches?

Neither did Trent Dilfer when Baltimore Won the SB with a GREAT defense. Sound familiar? Baltimore probably would not have won without him though!
