You misunderstood me, and I apologize for not being clear.
In my reference to KC what I meant was that Torre would not throw this lineup against them even if it was the first game of the series.
In essence, I was saying since the Yanks had won 4 games already against the Red Sox and Red Sox only, and thus he was quite content to rest people that he might not have had the Yanks been down 0-4 or 1-3 in the series.
I maintain that once Torre saw he had a good chance to win the game, he decided to "unrest" people like Damon and put him in.
Further, I say if yanks were down 0-4 or maybe even 1-3 in this series, Damon and maybe Giambi and possibly Posada would have started;it isn't that hard to stand away for a couple of hours in the field and a bat 4-5 times.
These guys aren't 80 years old and get paid plenty.
ps Maybe Posada would been rested because catching is tougher, but you might have seen him DH.

1978 was probably worse, as Sox were demolished even more than they were in this series-something like 42-9 runs scored.
Right now the things which come to mind in no particular order are this series, Boone's HR, the 1978 massacre and of course Bucky Fu king Dent, 1986 and Bill Buckner, and 1975 against the Reds in game 7.

          • Wow, Boomer Wells is the Red Sox's second best starter. Who could have seen that coming a month ago?

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on today's game;Yanks were not motivated and had half a lineup out there.
I still think Wells is living on borrowed time and is over the hill and needs to be replaced before next season;didn't he say though that this is his last year?

                • I'm not putting too much emphasis on this game, look at his last four starts - 1 ER in a win, 1 ER in a loss (because of unearned runs), 4 ER in a win over the Tigers, and 2 ER in 7 1/3 against the Yankees.

Game against Tigers was after they were up 2-0 in series just like today when Yanks were up 4-0.
My point is that visiting teams who have already won the first two games in Boston might have a tendency to relax.
I will admit that he pitched well, but he will have to prove it for a lot more than a few games when other team is fully motivated and has their best lineup out there.
I have little faith in Wells over time at this point and feel if Sox are banking on him the rest of the way for this year or perhaps next, they are in serious trouble. jmho
