    P.S.

These conversations are what make sports what it is. I love it and football. I can't wait.

I love the fact that there are still some guys here who can have a back and forth and not go off the beaten path or get defensive!

              Bomar's selfishness costs Oklahoma dearly

Throughout the past months, as it turns out, Rhett Bomar evidently told the University of Oklahoma football team the very same thing.
The now ex-OU quarterback, dismissed Tuesday for taking home substantially more pay than his actual work hours merited, obviously cared more about a few dead presidents than about winning or, much more importantly, personal integrity.

A quarterback is supposed to be a leader both on and off the field. Bomar not only put his future in jeopardy, but he also potentially killed his team's national title hopes. Just ask Marcus Vick what happens to can't-miss NFL prospects who screw things up.

So now we're left to sift through the wreckage of this most untimely incident, the latest blot on the college football world and a realm of life ostensibly devoted to academics and character formation first, and to athletics second.

USC, Auburn and even OU's rival Texas (with the departure of Ramonce Taylor) have recently felt the strain that comes with players succumbing to various forms of temptation, and other programs are still enmeshed in long-term difficulties for one reason or another.

Rhett Bomar may have led Oklahoma to a bowl win last season, but he clearly has no idea what it means to be a leader.

The positive out of all this was how decisively OU head coach Bob Stoops acted. Stoops made a bold statement in favor of personal accountability. In a statement on the decision to dismiss Bomar from the Oklahoma football team, Stoops said that "I firmly believe that our program is stronger than any individual player and that a championship program cannot compromise its values." That's a welcome and cleansing statement which is so towering as a beacon of integrity that it exceeds the wrong done by Bomar.

A football team's chances of beating Texas and winning the Big 12 might have been compromised, but a decorated national championship coach displayed first-class values. Stoops has his priorities very much in order and he realized what was truly important in this situation ... for himself, for the health and reputation of his school, and for the character development of the young men still on the OU football team.

So how Bomar's dismissal will affect the Red River Rivalry and the Big 12 South? Simply put, the early verdict is that it hurts OU, but not as much as one might think.

To pretend this loss won't affect OU is to be naïve, but to think it destroys the Sooners is also a reach. Bomar was not a slam dunk to be a stud this year. Better than 2005? Yes. But not all-world. And the fact that this event occurs a full month before Opening Day gives Stoops and his staff a lot of time to develop the next starter, whoever it will be.

Ultimately, the OU-Texas battle will be decided by two teams, who will both be trotting out untested quarterbacks. In fact, the biggest single key in the Red River Rivalry — for this columnist's money — is if Texas will remain a psychologically transformed team after last year's beatdown of the Sooners and the national title that ultimately followed. If Texas retains its swagger, the 'Horns likely defeat OU. But if the loss of Vince Young turns out to be greater than anyone expected, chances are the loss of Rhett Bomar won't keep Bob Stoops from regaining dominance over and against Mack Brown.

They also led off Sportscenter saying "A Big Hit to the Sooners BCS chances" ... and i still agree with that 100%

Can Thompson do it? No doubt, but Bomar was better than he has been given credit for last year. This kid as a freshman did alot of great THINGS. He also led them to only a 7-4 record. That's why people assumed he would mature along with the Sooners record. If Thompson matches what Bomar did, do they still go 7-4 or suddenly somehow jump to 11-1 12-0?

I don't see the latter happening but it is possible.
Bomar was a preseason Big Team QB (2nd team) pick......he did progress well........

Halzle did indeed have a bad Spring Practice, but he's talented......needs time.......they need to play him as much as they can early on....work both Thompson and He....

Thompson is such a gifted athlete they made him a receiver......He'el perform adequately........

Lat year offense totaly sputtered afainst TCU----Thompsons figures you showed earlier........TCU dared em to throw, and it ripped their offensive scheme to hell........I till this day, blame Coach Long for that ignorant play calling.....not Thompson......

                UCLA---just flat ass did a # on em....No UCLA this year----Middle Tenn.......

Texas beat the pee wine shit out of em......Young----he's gone......Thats the team thats gonna hurt at QB.......More even ground now between those 2 teams....

Texas Tech defense finally played a game, and Ok offense stalled----Bomar was in......

This year Ok has a much better defense...2 preseason all americans on D, and 1 on Offense........8 Ok players picked preseason Big 12.........

I only see Oreg, Tex, Tex Tch giving em problems.......Thus I see 9-3 at least.......I think they beat Tech, and may lose to Oreg or Texas....10-2 possible....if they can beat either Oreg or Texas, I fear Oreg more, they can IMO go 11-0....get lucky 12-0, then get their ass kicked by ND.....who has it all....

                Love ya Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutha..........

"Halzle was an academic qualifier out of Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village, Calif., but he was undersized and wasn't highly recruited.

At GWC, he gained weight, maturity and a rifle arm.

Last fall, he completed just 47 percent of his passes (169-of-363) for 2,077 yards with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as the Rustlers battled through major injuries and finished the season just 1-9.

Halzle was a three-year starter at Oaks Christian and was named All-Tri-Valley League and first-team All-California Interscholastic Federation (Oaks Christian won the CIF Division XI title his senior year)."

So a guy that led his juco team to a 1-9 record is going to lead OU to an undefeated season in the Big 12 South?

You brought up a good point (and team)....Iowa St and QB Meyer are gonna be nasty.......9 returning to an offense that averaged 350+ ypg.........Also had a super good defense last year, but only return 4......this is where thy hurt.....they'll have to do like Tx Tech----outscore you.......

Texas Tech also w/ great QB (J Hicks) is gonna be explosive...Averaged almost 500 ypg last season.......#4 in scoring, and #1 in passing.........they had a good defensive squad (avg) but only return 5 to defense.........

Texas has one of the best offensive lines in the country..#1 in scoring, and averaged over 512 ypg last year......however, they lose Young at QB(hard to replace) and only have 5 on offensecoming back, and 7 on defense..........

good teams to handle em though.....kapt

ctt---he spent 10 games scrambling....had no offensive line, and no receivers to speak of...........

The fact you mentioned his credentials, all this, and all that, should give you an idea of his capabilities.........

And I never said emphaticly that Halzle would lead OU to a 12-0 season.....I said that Thompson and Halzle could conceivably lead the Sooners to an 11-1 and possibly 12-0 season........

IMO---they can go 11-1 or 12-0 with the afore-mentioned QB's......When the season is over, and they're well below that, I'll be the first to admit I over estimated em, if you'll jump in if they go 11-1 or 12-0 and say you underestimated em.....

Season right around the corner----gl to ya....kapt

Hey, I have no doubt that the kid is talented, but I question his ability to lead that team. I'll be here eating crow when they win their 11th game and I'll eat even more if they win the Big 12. It's still a guessing game until that first weekend. There is one thing that I'm conviced is true, however... Paul Smith is the best quarterback in Oklahoma this year.

Texas Tech won't give OU any problems. They aren't good enough defensively, and Leach's system has never had much success against Oklahoma. Even last year at home, it took a couple awful calls to give the Red Raiders the win.

@ Oregon is now a huge problem, because it's early in the season. The Sooners will fix some things by the end of the season, whether it's Halzle or whoever under center.

I have never liked Long as the off co ord because he didn't utilize each QB's talent, rather, he tried to make em like he was....so he leaned to that style QB........
