Thats depends on who you sign.........It's the last chance to enhance your chances to advance further.........

and by the way, nothing in Sports carries a guarantee........Nor in any business move, as this is what they are.............

Thats what separates some GM's from others........Smart "Chess" moves..........kapt

That is why I trust Theo and not necessarily Cashman especially with Steinbrenner (who isn't too sharp when it cmoes to this stuff) leaning on him.

I hope Theo remembers circa 1990 when they traded Bagwell and another prospect to Houston for an aging reliever in Larry Anderson. Imagine the damage Bags could have done to the Monster. And Anderson.......not even sure if he lasted a year

Of course Theo was only about 13 back then..maybe we should remind him

A little more on the potential trade...

The New York Yankees are close to winning the Bobby Abreu sweepstakes, with a deal possibly being concluded Sunday, FoxSports.com reported.

Abreu has agreed to waive his no-trade clause to be sent to the Yankees, New York Mets or Boston Red Sox, the New York Daily News reported.

But the Yankees are the clubhouse leaders for Abreu, FoxSports.com reported. The Yankees would get Abreu and pitcher Cory Lidle in exchange for Class AA prospects, FoxSports.com reported. Another possible name to be included is Jon Lieber, but Lidle is the likely pitcher to move, FoxSports.com reported.

The Yankees are expected to either pay Abreu a $1 million bonus or pick up his $16 million option for 2008 but won't give up prized prospect Philip Hughes or Melky Cabrera, the New York Daily News reported.

The Red Sox are also in talks with the Phillies about Abreu, but most believe Boston is simply trying to drive up the price for the Yankees, FoxSports.com reported.

Abreu sounded excited about possibly joining the Yankees on Saturday night. He sat out the Phillies' win over the Marlins but spoke about his situation.

"Of course, when you hear the Yankees, one of the best teams in baseball, and you hear the rumors, it makes you feel good," Abreu said, the Allentown, Pa., Morning Call reported. "They have such great players. They have such a good team. That would not be such a bad situation."

The Yankees are hurting in the outfield, where Gary Sheffield and Hideki Matsui are expected to be out until September with injuries.

I remember that disaster very well-thank you Lou Gorman.
ps I was up in arms when they traded Nomar in 2004 and ended up with Cabrera.
Moral of the story-Theo sure knows a heck of a lot more than I do or for that matter probably most GM's when assessing talent and what a team needs at a certain point in the schedule.

Lowell isn't anything big to lose as his numbers have been going down and down. He's doing better this year, but I don't think his any long term solution. His name has been getting thrown around with Jeff Conine.

I'm not thinking long term with Lowell, just THIS year. The guy is batting .293 and he LEADS the A.L. in doubles (including a 2 rbi game tying double late in yesterday's game). He also has a TOP Glove!

I'm thinking of this season and this season only and losing him scares me without a replacement!

Youk has been EXCELLENT with the glove at 1st this year. I don't want to hear he is moving to 3rd because we would then be without him at 1st!

I was referring to your statement---as I quoted---your reference to .signing players at this junction of the season ia a "GUARANTEE" of nothing.........

Thats reminds me of Howard Cossell.....narrating the obvious....

My reply was...what in the hell carries a guarantee in Sports or business trades........

Nothing---yes----Nothing--that shoe fits all owners, not just Steinbrener......

That was my statement----nothing to do with George.........and his/team decisions.....also said, that MLB needs new rules governing how much $ can be spent.........kapt

I sure hope Theo has the sense not to trade Loretta or Lowell simply to "keep up with the Joneses" (in this case the Stesinbrenners);signing players at this point in the season is a guarantee of nothing.
In some cases it might even hurt the team;how for example is Sheffield going to take this?
One of the biggest mid season moves of all time by the Red Sox was trading Nomar and getting pieces like Cabrera in return. We won the W.S. that year didn't we?

Mid season trades can make or break a team and this is a BIG +++ for the Yankees!

Sure it looks good on paper, but it doesn't mean Sox should panic and break up a winning combination either.

All I can is if I were a Yankee fan I would be excited but not overly so.
I have heard so many times during the past few years that the additions of Randy Johnson, ARod, Sheffield, etc. would make the Yanks a shoo-in to win the WS, and it didn't happen.
As a Sox fan, I look at it as a decent move from the Yanks point of view, but I far from overly concerned in view of the previous paragraph.
