Their record wouldn't be any different... guys like Wright, Beltran, and Delgado could hit AL pitchers just as well, and clutch hits, average with RISP would be just as good... I think Beltran is underated as a fielder (yeah i know) and Slippery Fingers Milledge was sent down for more practise...
If all you A-Rod dick lickers are so smart, why didn't one of you post the over tonight?

ps Well, they have Pitt. tomorrow, and after a few games, I suppose they can write these games off with the Red Sox and Yanks this week as a bad dream(unless they should play them again in post season).
they already toyed with the yanks at shea shoulda swept them one 2 out of 3 and now mets starters in a slump still there in first place and have a better record.

The fact that you're so strongly against the Mets makes me like their chances even more.

This is typical of this board. A team goes into their first slump of the season and they're being left for dead.

I am not impressed especially with what I have seen this week.
Compare this Mets team with that of 1986, and it is obvious what a far cry it really is: Obviously they will get better as they have a young team, but I don't see them winning a WS this year.

Savage, you crack me up...who compared this team to the '86 Mets? That team won 108 games! Of course they aren't that good. No one has said they are. And if you think the Mets are that bad, why didn't you post anything when they won 8 straight? The lose 5 out of 6 and have been playing terrible baseball so all the haters come out, especially when the team they root for wins 12 straight. The Mets are not as good as there 8 game streak and they are certainly not as bad as their last 6 games. And I guarantee you the Red Sox are not as good as there last 15 games. Will be anxious yto see what you post about your beloved Sox when they go into a slump like all teams do. And I love the fact that Savage, the baseball guru, has counted out the Mets. Makes me feel a whole lot better. Keep drinking the Red Sox Kool-Aide....

I am not saying the Mets are not good;I am saying that based on what I have seen of them and especially the way in which the national league has been dominated by the AL, I just don't think this is a team which can win WS.
Yes the Red Sox will go in a slump also(probably soon), and until they can prove they can defeat Chicago(this weekend), I won't make any boasts.
I think Mets are young for the most part and it showed this week;it wasn't that they just lost but how badly they looked in some of those games.
I still maintain that if they played in the AL East or the Central, their record would not be as good as it now, as they would have to play some very good teams and not the patsies of the NL.
I am sure Mets will learn from this week's disaster/slump or whatever you want to call it.
My analogy to the 1986 Mets was merely to compare rosters;I actually have people say that this year's team is one of the best in their history.
It is a lot better than what they have put out there in last few years, but please, lets not get too far carried away just yet.
They have a good chance to go to WS, because frankly other than St.Louis and a few other teams, there are not that many teams to challenge them.
Winning a WS is a different matter, and again my judsgment is not based on how they played but how in general how poorly the NL has fared against the AL this year.
ps Don't forget also the last two WS have ended up sweeps for the AL-Sox against St. Louis and last year White Sox against Houston;that coupled with what has happened in interleague play this year says something.

I am not questioning the AL vs NL theory, the AL has dominated. But the playoffs are a different season...you aren't throwing #4 and #5 starters, no days off for veterans. A lot changes and to think that the AL will waltz over the NL just because history is on their side...only time will tell.

I think comparing these Mets to the '86 Mets is assinine and for anyone who says this is one of the best teams in their history...let them play more than 80 games before making a statement like that. Then again, their history isn't marked with dominant teams. There is a far drop off from the '86 Mets to the second best team (perhaps the '88 Mets) so they may very well be the second best team in their history. but that doesn't say much. They are a 95 - 100 win team in the NL. They would win 90 games in the AL. Also, they are not young. They have a handful of young players but the majority of their team is experienced and playoff tested veterans. For every young player they have, there are 2 or 3 that have been through the wars. Do they have a lot of question marks? Absolutely. But name one team in the majors that doesn't. I love the Red Sox...and I can rattle off at least 5 question marks for them the rest of the season....

Three Jack-I would love nothing better than a Red Sox/Mets rematch in the WS.
To change the talk to the Red Sox,they will have to show me that they can defeat the White Sox in regular season play first before I will say how good the are;who can forget last year's disaster in the playoffs?
I would agree that Mets would probably win about 90 in the American league, which in itself raises question as to whether that recored would be good enough make the playoffs(it would depend on which division they played in;they could win the west, but it is questionable if 90 would get them the wildcard).

                            Questions for the Sox:
Can Youkilis continue to play this way for a full season? If he falters, who bats leadoff? Crisp was not the answer.
Can Lowell continue to drink from the fountain of youth?
When will Trot get hurt and will Wily Mo be an adequate replacement?
Who is going to step up behind Schilling, Wakefield & Beckett?
Other than Timlin, who can they use as a bridge to Papelbon?
Have we seen the best of Varitek? As not been the same guy since August of last year and can they win with him not producing as he has in the past?
Asking an awful lot in depending on Lester and Papelbon...can they withstand the heat of a pennant race in a city like Boston?

Like I said, they aren't as good as this 15 game run would make you think and when they lose 6 of 7 they won't be that bad...just like the Mets when everyone said they were 'unbeatable' when they won 8 straight, it turns very fast.
