Embiid brawls with Towns, 76ers beat Timberwolves
      October 30, 2019
      By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) James Harden scored 59 points and made one of two free throws with 2.4 seconds to play to give the Houston Rockets a 159-158 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Bradley Beal scored 46 points for Washington, hitting three throws with 8.1 seconds left to tie it at 158.

Harden was 18 of 32 from the field, 6 of 14 from 3-point range, and made 17 of 18 free throws. He also had nine assists in 37 minutes.

Russell Westbrook had had just three points in the first three quarters, then scored 14 in the fourth quarter and finished with his second triple-double of the season. He had 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

Clint Capela added 21 points and 12 rebounds to help Houston improved to 3-1.

Rui Hachimura had 23 points in his home debut for the Wizards, Davis Bertans added 21 and Washington shot 62.6% from the field. The Wizards dropped to 1-3.

      76ERS 118, TIMBERWOLVES 95

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Joel Embiid scored 19 points and got into a brawl with Karl-Anthony Towns that sent both players to the showers early, and Philadelphia beat Minnesota to improve to 4-0.

The Sixers were leading 75-55 midway through the third quarter when Embiid and Towns went at it. The two big men have a history of talking trash to each other. After they got tangled under the basket, Embiid shoved Towns, who answered with a punch that missed as both fell to the floor. Ben Simmons jumped in and forcefully held Towns down as other players and coaches ran onto the court.

Embiid and Towns were ejected after a video review. Embiid shadowboxed to the crowd's delight on his way back to the locker room. Fans responded with ''MVP! ''MVP!'' chants.

Tobias Harris scored 18 points, Furkan Korkmaz had 17, Simmons added 16 for Philadelphia. Al Horford had 16 rebounds and 12 points. Andrew Wiggins scored 19 points for Minnesota.

      CELTICS 116, BUCKS 105

BOSTON (AP) - Kemba Walker had 21 of his 32 points in the second half and Boston rallied to beat Milwaukee,

Jayson Tatum added 25 points, Gordon Hayward had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Marcus Smart finished with 19 points and six assists.

Milwaukee dominated in the first half, leading 19. But the Celtics responded in the third quarter, using a 26-7 run over the final 6:38 of the period to take an 80-76 edge into the fourth. Boston kept that momentum, beginning the final period with an 11-4 run to open a 91-80 lead.

Khris Middleton led the Bucks with 26 points. Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points and 14 rebounds, but the reigning MVP lost his composure late, picking up a hard foul on Smart and then a technical foul in the final minute.

      RAPTORS 125, PISTONS 113

TORONTO (AP) - Pascal Siakam scored 30 points, including 19 in the third quarter, and Fred VanVleet had 13 points and 11 assists in Toronto's victory over Detroit.

Siakam made eight of 12 shots in the third, including three of four from 3-point range, as the defending NBA champions outscored Detroit 37-27 to take a 101-85 lead into the fourth.

Kyle Lowry scored 20 points, Serge Ibaka and Norman Powell each had 19 and OG Anonuby added 13 for the Raptors. Andre Drummond had 21 points and 22 rebounds for the Pistons.

      TRAIL BLAZERS 102, THUNDER 99

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Damian Lillard had 23 points and 13 assists to help Portland hold off Oklahoma City.

Lillard made 4 of 15 shots the first three quarters, but he made three 3-pointers in an 1:26 flurry in the fourth that turned a three-point deficit into a five-point lead.

C.J. McCollum scored 22 points and Kent Bazemore added 14 for the Trail Blazers. Chris Paul scored 21 points for the Thunder.

      CAVALIERS 117, BULLS 111

CLEVELAND (AP) - Kevin Love had 17 points and 20 rebounds, Tristan Thompson scored 23 points and the Cleveland beat Chicago.

Love's basket on a goaltending call gave Cleveland a 91-90 lead early in the fourth quarter. His jumper from the left wing put the Cavaliers ahead 110-106 with just under a minute to play.

Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine each scored 16 points for Chicago.

      PACERS 118, NETS 108

NEW YORK (AP) - Domantas Sabonis scored 29 points, Jeremy Lamb added 25 and Indiana beat Brooklyn for its first victory in five games this season.

Malcolm Brogdon added 21 points and 13 assists for Indiana.

Kyrie Irving led Brooklyn with 28 points, Spencer Dinwiddie had 20 and Caris LeVert 15. The Nets have lost two in a row to fall to 1-3.

      MAGIC 95, KNICKS 82

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) - Nikola Vucevic had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Orlando rallied to beat New York.

Aaron Gordon scored 10 of his 15 points final 5:35 to help Orlando snap a two-game losing streak. Evan Fournier added 14 points, and Jonathan Isaac had 10. Julius Randle led New York with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

      HORNETS 118, KINGS 111

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) - P.J. Washington scored 23 points and Charlotte overcame a 14-point deficit to beat winless Sacramento.

Terry Rozier had 22 points, six assists and five rebounds for Charlotte. Buddy Hield scored 23 points and Harrison Barnes had 22 for the Kings.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud……

          13) Cincinnati Bengals have a bye this week; they announced they will start rookie QB Ryan Finley when they host the Ravens next week.

Sunday, Andy Dalton became the first NFL QB ever to start a season 8-0, and also 0-8. Tuesday, he got benched on his 32nd birthday.

While I’m here, a reminder that Marvin Lewis went 131-122-3 coaching the Bengals in the regular season; his 0-7 playoff record sent him packing.

Here is the problem: Cincinnati’s last .500 season without Lewis as HC was in 1996; their last playoff game without Lewis was in 1990.

Since 1991, Bengals are 55-145 in games not coached by Lewis, 131-122-3 wth Lewis.

          12) Washington 6, Houston 2:
          — First best-of-7 finals series in MLB, NHL or NBA where road team won all seven games.
          — Washington played five elimination games this month; in his at-bats from 7th inning on in those five games, Anthony Rendon was 6-8 with three doubles, three homers and a walk.

          11) Rockets 159, Wizards 158— While the Houston-Washington baseball teams were playing in the World Series, those cities’ basketball teams set defense back 30 years.

It was the highest scoring NBA game that didn’t go to overtime since a 1990 game where Golden State beat Denver 162-158.

          10) James Harden tied an NBA record Monday with his 7th career game with 20+ made foul shots; he shares the record with Moses Malone, Kobe Bryant.

Harden was 21-22 from the line vs Oklahoma City, whose whole team was 17-24.

          9) When teams underperform, there have to be scapegoats:
          — Bronx baseball team fired pitching coach Larry Rothschild; it is obviously his fault that the Astros are better than the Bronx Bombers.
          — Arizona Wildcats fired defensive coordinator Marcel Yates and linebackers coach John Rushing, after the Wildcats gave up 133 points in their last three games.

          8) Weird fact: When the Giants acquired DT Leonard Williams from the Jets a few days ago it was the first time EVER the Giants/Jets made a trade. Thats over 50 years.

          7) Patriots, Falcons cut their kickers Tuesday; New England signed Nick Folk, who will kick for his 4th NFL team- he also holds the record for longest field goal (55 yards) in AAF history this past winter. Falcons are on a bye, haven’t signed a new kicker yet.

          6) It bothers me that FOX has to interview managers while a World Series game is going on; they’re not going to say anything interesting, so you get to see a guy squirm for a few minutes while he’s stressing out about not doing his freaking job. It makes no sense.

          5) Stephen Strasburg is the first MLB pitcher ever who was the #1 pick in the amateur draft, then started a World Series game for the same team that drafted him.

          4) RIP to coach Al Bianchi, who passed away this week at age 87; Bianchi was a head coach in the ABA and NBA for nine seasons- his 1970-71 Virginia Squires went 55-29. He was also the first coach of the Seattle SuperSonics.

          3) With Klay Thompson sitting out most of this year, this year’s Golden State Warriors have the 3rd-youngest roster in the NBA.

          2) With Joe Flacco headed to the IR, Denver Broncos have three QB’s (Allen, Rypien, Lock) none of whom has never taken an NFL snap.

          1) Last Sunday was only day this year where there were NFL, NBA, NHL and major league baseball games, all on the same day.

Stephen Curry leaves game after landing hard on left hand
            October 31, 2019
            By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Warriors star Stephen Curry broke his left hand on a hard fall in the third quarter of Golden State's game against the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday night.

The two-time MVP drove to his left defended by Kelly Oubre Jr. and with big man Aron Baynes standing solidly in the paint. Curry leapt with the ball then came down head first landing awkwardly on his hands to brace himself from the court, with Baynes crashing onto Curry's left hand. Curry grimaced in pain grabbing his hand then walked to the locker room with 8:31 left in the third quarter.

Losing Curry, Golden State's longest-tenured player and oldest at age 31, for an extended period would be a huge blow for a young Warriors team.

Golden State is struggling to start the season with Kevin Durant's departure to Brooklyn and Klay Thompson out for perhaps the entire season recovering from July 2 surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee.

Nunn has 28 points, Heat beat Hawks for 2nd time in 3 days
                  November 1, 2019
                  By The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) Kendrick Nunn scored a career-high 28 points to add to his record-setting start and the Miami Heat beat the Atlanta Hawks for the second time in three days, 106-97 on Thursday night.

Nunn has 112 in his first five games, the most by an undrafted player in NBA history. Connie Hawkins of the Phoenix Suns scored 105 points in his first five games of the 1969-70 season.

Jabari Parker led Atlanta with 23 points. Hawks point guard Trae Young sat out because of a sprained right ankle.

                  PELICANS 122, NUGGETS 107

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Jahlil Okafor scored 26 points, Brandon Ingram added 25 and New Orleans beat Denver for itsr first victory in five games this season.

Ingram has scored at least 22 points in each of his first five games for New Orleans after coming over from the Los Angeles Lakers.

Michael Porter Jr. led the Nuggets with 15 points in his NBA debut.

                  CLIPPERS 103, SPURS 97

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Kawhi Leonard scored 38 points, Montrezl Harrell added 24 and Los Angeles dealt San Antonio its first loss of the season.

Leonard also grabbed 12 rebounds for his first points-rebounds, double-double this season. It is also Leonard's first double-double in three meetings against the Spurs, where he played seven seasons (2011-18).

The game was close for the first 28 minutes, before the Clippers took control with a 9-1 run to take a 64-55 lead with 6:55 remaining in the third quarter. Leonard - who had 25 points in the second half - scored five of his 10 third-quarter points during the rally, including a dunk after a steal of DeMar DeRozan at midcourt.

DeRozan led San Antonio with 29 points and Derrick White added 20.

Friday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here…..

                      13) Phillies signed Bryce Harper, Padres signed Manny Machado, but Washington won the World Series. Here is the money Washington spent on pitching:

                      — Strasburg: seven years, $175M
                      — Scherzer: seven years, $210M
                      — Corbin: six years, $140M
                      — Sanchez: two years, $19M

                      Starting pitching still matters.

                      12) Gerrit Cole is about to break the bank in free agency; wonder what his agent’s blood pressure was Wednesday night when Cole started throwing in the bullpen, three nights after he threw 110 pitches Sunday. Don’t want the star client getting hurt.

Lets say Cole banks $35M a year for four years in his next contract (Zack Greinke makes that now); the agent’s take (3%) of all that would be $4,200,000.

                      11) 49ers 28, Cardinals 25— 49ers led 28-14 but Arizona kept America entertained until the end; Garoppolo was 27-36/306 and four TD’s passng, as the 49ers improved to 8-0.

                      10) When the Rams traded injured CB Aqib Talib to Miami this week, you figure Talib would be insulted or ticked off, but because of state income tax laws, Talib actually saves $560,000- he moved from California to Florida, where taxes are lower. Good week for him.

                      9) Two of my favorite NBA players to watch are both on the Clippers; Patrick Beverley and Montrezl Harrell; they aren’t stat guys, they just work their butts off and make life uncomfortable for their opponents. Guys like that make life easier for the stat guys.

                      8) Baylor 17, West Virginia 14— Bears improve to 8-0, even though they’ve been favored only twice in their last five games. Baylor has three wins by 3 or fewer points.

                      7) NFL road teams are 71-45-2 ATS so far this season.

                      6) Jimmy Butler’s stats in Miami’s 106-97 win over Atlanta Thursday: 5 points, 9 rebounds, 11 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks. Heat was +21 with Butler on the floor, -12 with hm off the floor. You don’t have to score all the time to be a difference maker.

                      5) Wayne Ellington has scored 5,298 points in his 11-year NBA career; Knicks are the ninth NBA team he’s played for. His best scoring year was two years ago, when he scored 11.8 ppg for Miami.

Ellington played three years at North Carolina, scoring 14.7 ppg, was 28th player taken in the 2009 Draft. Betcha he could write a helluva book, playing on nine teams in 11 years.

                      4) Georgia Southern 24, Appalachian State 21— Mountaineers had gotten up to #20 in country, but then lost at home on national TV to their longtime rivals from back in their I-AA days.

                      3) Joel Embiid and Karl Anthony Towns both got suspended two games for their part in a small scuffle during Wednesday’s game. On NBA TV, couple of retired players were laughing, saying that back in the 90’s, when the NBA game was much more physical than it is now, the players wouldn’t even have gotten tossed out of the game.

                      2) Kansas City Royals named former Cardinal skipper Mike Matheny their new manager; he was 591-474 in seven years in St Louis, 21-22 in playoff games, but he missed the playoffs this last three years, which is why the Cardinals told him to take a hike.

                      1) Only 105 days until pitchers/catchers report for the 2020 baseball season.

                        Friday's Essentials
                        Tony Mejia

                        Game of the Night

Houston at Brooklyn (-3.5, 240.5), 7:05 ET, ESPN

The Rockets have allowed at least 60 points in six of the last seven halves they’ve played, so hearing James Harden credit defense for Wednesday’s comeback win in a remarkable 159-158 shootout was definitely amusing. Houston did close on a 15-6 run over the last 2:19, but buckling down after you’ve allowed 152 points is pretty laughable.

For better or worse, this Russell Westbrook-infused group is going to play at a pace that will probably allow other teams to find a consisistent rhythm. Rockets Mike D’Antonio excitedly talked about being able to use one of the NBA’s top athletes and fastest guards to push the ball up the court and attack. When the action bogs down in the halfcourt, James Harden still monopolizes the ball and play to his strengths as the greatest one-on-one players in league history, which allows scorers who typically wouldn’t double as a primary defender on Harden to stand around rest. It’s all resulted in teams consistently being able to find their groove against the Rockets, who are allowing an NBA-high 127.5 points per game.

Milwaukee started the trend in its 117-111 comeback win on the opening Thursday of the season, battling back from 16-point halftime deficit by outscoring Houston 67-45 in the second half. The Pelicans scored 61 in the first and 62 in the second in a 126-123 loss despite making 18 3-pointers. The Thunder owned a 62-52 lead after a half on Monday night before Houston actually did clamp down, outscoring OKC 39-18 in the third in an eventual 116-112 win. Their next game came Wednesday, and you know how that went.

In case you don’t, the Wizards scored 77 first-half points, followed it up with a 81 over the final 24 minutes by hitting the 40-point mark in each quarter and still lost. Harden finished with 59 points, missing out on 60 after smartly missing his final free-throw to leave Washington no chance of a desperate game-winner. Westbrook has two triple-doubles in his four outings with the Rockets, showing off the same motor we’ve come to expect and the same crooked jumper. A hand injury he’s playing through hasn’t aided that cause, but he’s looked increasingly comfortable and thrilled that D’Antoni is trusting him to attack whenever possible.

The Rockets take the floor in Brooklyn winners of three of four, even with San Antonio and Dallas in a Southwest Division they’re ultimately expected to win. They’ve yet to cover a spread though, and as you might imagine, have seen the last three games go ‘over,’ though the foul game contributed to the OKC game topping 227.5 since there were 19 points in the final 1:35 due to free-throws and uncontested layups.

The Nets have also seen the ‘over’ come in three of the four times they’ve taken the floor, but come off their most disappointing outing of the season, a 118-103 home loss to the Pacers. Kyrie Irving missed a game-winner in the season opener against the Timberwolves and Jae Crowder hit a 3-pointer to beat the OT buzzer in a stunner in Memphis last Sunday that in their lone appearance on the road, so getting blown out by previously winless Indiana was a new experience for the Nets.

Malcolm Brogdon dominated in similar fashion to how Grizzlies rookie Ja Morant managed to, finishing with 21 points and 13 assists, so Irving has had his issues on the defensive end. He enters Friday’s game as the NBA’s second-leading behind Harden (36.8 ppg), averaging 35.3 points, but head coach Kenny Atkinson already hinted after Tuesday’s loss that he’d love to see better ball movement and isn’t really running sets they ran in the preseason. He’s hoping his team’s pieces come together, so it will be interesting to see whether Irving complies or turns this into a one-on-one duel with Harden.

Brooklyn is going to be a home underdog for the first time but is just 1-2 at Barclays Center. The Rockets are in the midst of six road games in seven outings over a two-week span and are hoping for a smoother ride than they experienced in D.C. They were 22-19 away from Houston last regular-season. The Nets posted their first winning record at home (23-18) last season since the ’13-’14 season that featured Jason Kidd as head coach and Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Joe Johnson on the roster.

Kevin Durant confirmed to ESPN on Thursday that he won’t play this season, so this will be Irving’s show and he’ll need to start doing a better job of protecting homecourt. Brooklyn had lost five straight against the Rockets before winning the most recent meeting back in January, a 145-142 OT victory in which it overcame Harden’s 58 points. Sixth man Spencer Dinwiddie scored a team-high 33 points to lead seven double-figure scorers. Atkinson would love to see the scoring spread out, but should be able to count on Irving, Dinwiddie and Caris LeVert to score enough to hold serve in a shootout.

                        Best of the Rest

                        Milwaukee (-4.5, 216) at Orlando, 7:05 p.m. ET

The Bucks blew a 16-pint halftime lead in Boston on Wednesday, losing 116-105 after surrendering 74 second-half points to a Celtics team playing without projected starters Jaylen Brown and Enes Kanter. Making matters worse for the Bucks is that Giannis Antetokounmpo appears to have the yips at the free-throw line, shooting 6-for-10 and putting up a pair of airballs. He’ll have to deal with length in the form of Jonathan Issac and the athletic Aaron Gordon against the Magic, so this makes for an interesting bounce-back game.

The same brain trust that put together the bulk of this Bucks team, team president Jeff Weltman and GM John Hammond, which includes drafting Antetokounmpo, is assembling the Magic, so both teams have long wingspans and a reliance on 3-point shooting in common. Milwaukee has won five of the last seven meetings, but lost the last one 103-83 at home after shooting 32 percent from the field. Greek Freak didn’t play in the Feb. 9 matchup.

                        Cleveland at Indiana (-7.5, 211), 7:05 p.m. ET

Tristan Thompson is off to a fantastic start and Kevin Love comes off a 20-rebound game, so protecting the paint is going to be the priority for the Pacers as they look to overcome the absence of center Myles Turner, the league’s leading shot blocker last season. He’s considered week-to-week with a sprained ankle. Domantas Sabonis replaced him in the starting lineup against Brooklyn on Wednesday and helped fuel an upset alongside Brogdon with 29 points.

Jeremy Lamb returned to the lineup with 25 points while T.J. Warren is also feeling more comfortable, so Indiana’s new pieces are starting to get comfortable. They’ll look to avenge a 110-99 setback last Saturday night in which they trailed by as many as 24 points. Love finished one assist shy of a triple-double and Thompson finished with 25 points and 13 rebounds with Turner playing nearly 40 minutes, so Nate McMillan’s team will have their work cut out for them keeping those guys from dominating inside.

                        New York at Boston (-10.5, 214), 7:35 p.m. ET

The Knicks will again be without point guards Elfrid Payton (hamstring) and Dennis Smith, Jr. (bereavement list), so expect Frank Ntilikina to get extended minutes and the offense to run through center Julius Randle, forward Marcus Morris and rookie wing J.T. Barrett. That formula ran out of gas last time out against the Knicks, so you can understand hopes aren’t high that New York can have a different outcome against the Celtics than what transpired in a 118-95 loss at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.

Brooklyn native Kemba Walker gave Knicks fans a show like he normally does, switching it up by doing it in a Celtics uniform for the first time. He scored 32 points and drained seven 3-pointers. Brown scored 19, but may miss a second straight game with an illness, which would move Marcus Smart into the starting lineup and provide more opportunities for Gordon Hayward. Enes Kanter still hasn’t debuted with Boston and will miss another game with a knee issue. New York has lost six of seven against the Celtics, but the lone win did come at TD Garden last November thanks to 15 3-point makes.

                        L.A. Lakers (-1.5, 216.5) at Dallas, 9:35 p.m. ET, ESPN

Anthony Davis went for 40 points and 20 rebounds despite being visibly bothered by a shoulder injury, so while he’s no 100 percent, it’s clear this ailment is something he should be able to overcome. This matchup will be his first in a while against Kristaps Porzingis, who at 7-foot-2 is able to offer a unique challenge in being someone with similar natural guard skills who is even bigger than he is. LeBron James matches up with his European version, a phenom living up to the hype as someone who is one shy of doubling the number of triple-doubles he’s notched before turning 21.

Doncic really struggled on the same floor against James when the Mavs lost a pair of games against the Lakers prior to LeBron’s groin injury. While James averaged 28.5 points and L.A. scored 114 points in both wins, Doncic shot 7-for-24, averaging just 10 points. Spicing this matchup up further will be the return of Kyle Kuzma, who will make his ’19-’20 debut after sitting due to an ankle injury.

San Antonio (-6, 225) at Golden State, 10:35 p.m. ET

The Spurs will look to rebound from their first loss of the season after getting torched by Kawhi Leonard, who dominated with 38 points in helping the Clips survive 103-97. Guard Dejounte Murray has been tremendous but will sit on the second night of a back-to-back and DeMar DeRozan might not be as engaged in San Francisco as he was in his native L.A. against good friend Leonard, so Gregg Popovich will need to lean on others to avoid a letdown. LaMarcus Aldridge is a prime candidate to bounce back, finishing with just five points on 2-for-8 shooting, but we’ll see how many minutes he plays after working over 35 against the Clips.

The Warriors will be beginning life without Steph Curry, who we’re not likely to see until 2020 at the earliest after breaking his hand on Wednesday night. Golden State surrendered a 30-1 run to the Suns well before Curry got injured, so there are clearly strides that need to be made with center Willie Cauley-Stein and shooter Alec Burks debuting the other night. D’Angelo Russell should take over Curry’s role and rookie Jordan Poole, Burks and Damion Lee should all get more opportunities alongside forwards Draymond Green and Glenn Robinson, Jr.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Patty Mills came off the bench to score 31 points and San Antonio beat Golden State, hours after the Warriors learned they will be without injured star Stephen Curry for at least three months.

The game was an indication of the uphill battle facing Golden State without Curry, who underwent surgery after breaking his left hand Wednesday against Phoenix.

Russell couldn't carry the Warriors alone, even with three teammates in double figures. Rookie Jordan Poole scored 20.
