  • Lipscomb edges Wichita State in NIT
    April 2, 2019
    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NEW YORK (AP) Garrison Mathews is the kind of player only the most die-hard basketball fans would know, his prolific scoring seldom on any sports highlight clips. With the college basketball spotlight blasted on Madison Square Garden, Mathews put the sport on notice and buried a shot in the clutch that sparked madness for tiny Lipscomb.

Mathews swished his ninth 3-pointer of the game in front of an exuberant Lipscomb bench for the lead with 1:10 left in the game to send the Bisons on their way to the NIT championship in a 71-64 win over Wichita State on Tuesday night.

''It was good to just do it for the team and kind of give us a lift,'' he said.

He carried them to the NIT final. Lipscomb will face Texas, a 58-44 semifinal winner over TCU, Thursday for the NIT title.

Mathews had been buried in obscurity for the ASUN Conference Bisons (29-7), but put on a show on national television in crunch time at Madison Square Garden. He yelled as the shot fell from beyond NBA 3-point range and the Bisons rose from the bench in jubilation. Mathews sealed the win with free throws and finished with 34 points, setting the stage for Lipscomb to play for its first NIT championship.

''People should know about us by now,'' forward Rob Marberry said. ''I think people can finally see Lipscomb's a basketball school now.''

Wichita State's Samajae Haynes-Jones stole the ball near the 3-point line and the 6-foot guard exploded for a fast break dunk that turned MSG yellow and gave the Shockers a late double-digit lead. But they faded down the stretch and one of the hottest second-half teams in basketball missed their final 10 shots and over the final 8-plus minutes to head home empty-handed.

Dexter Dennis scored 13 points and Markis McDuffie had 12 for the Shockers.

The Shockers had a solid season under coach Gregg Marshall, six years after he led the program to the Final Four. Marshall led the Shockers to the 2011 NIT championship, a springboard for the most successful era in program history. The Shockers (22-15) made their own sensational run in the NIT, beating the No. 1, 2 and 3 seeds, all on the road, just to make it to New York.

''This was a year we could have taken a big dip. I mean, a big dip,'' Marshall said. ''But we're in Madison Square Garden playing in April.''

The Shockers had their hands full against the fifth-seeded Bisons.

A year after NIT champion Penn State drew big, rowdy crowds to Madison Square Garden, the arena was nearly empty for the matchup between teams from Kansas and Tennessee. New Yorkers wasted their chance to watch Mathews, named to The Associated Press All-America honorable mention team. Mathews was named ASUN player of the year and averaged 26.3 points in the NIT. He entered with a whopping 2,429 career points and scored 44 points in an NIT quarterfinal win over North Carolina State.

He created open looks by moving without the ball and was a burst of energy in Lipscomb's first ever game against the Shockers.

Mathews hit three 3s and scored 18 points in the first half to give Lipscomb a 35-30 lead at the break. The Bisons, who lost the ASUN Tournament championship game to Liberty, looked to Mathews every chance they got. He buried a 3 on a fast break off a turnover to bring the Bisons within one, and even his misses worked in their favor. He missed on a long 3, but Ahsan Asadullah scored on an uncontested tip for a five-point lead.

    SOMETHING DIFFERENT

The NIT was a bit of a mad scientist in the college basketball lab. The 3-point line was extended to the same distance used by FIBA (22 feet, 1.75 inches). The free throw lane matched the NBA and was widened from 12 to 16 feet. The shot clock also reset to 20 seconds after an offensive rebound instead of the full 30 seconds, as well as other minor changes.

The experimental rules will help the NCAA determine if a marginally more difficult 3-point shot will be effective for college basketball and if widening the lane will reduce physicality and create more driving opportunities.

''The style of play in men's college basketball is healthy and appealing, but the leadership governing the game is interested in keeping the playing rules contemporary and trending favorably,'' said Dan Gavitt, NCAA senior vice president of basketball.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) Jon Elmore scored 23 of his 28 points in the first half and Marshall held on to beat Hampton 80-78 in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Tuesday night.

Elmore had 23 points, five rebounds and five assists in the first half as Marshall built a 51-38 lead. He was 7 of 12 from the field, including 6 of 9 from distance. Marshall made 11 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes and finished with 13.

Hampton trailed by 13 points early in the second half, but rallied to take its first lead, 65-64, since the 5:52 mark of the first half.

C.J. Burks made a go-ahead transition layup following a steal to give Marshall a 76-74 lead and he added four straight free throws from there to seal it.

Burks scored 10 of Marshall's final 11 points and finished with 17. Jannson Williams added 12 points for Marshall (22-14), which will host the championship game on Thursday night.

Trevond Barnes had 18 points for the Pirates (18-17). Kalin Fisher added 16 points. Jermaine Marrow had 15 points.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) Sandy Cohen III scored 23 points as Green Bay narrowly beat Texas Southern 87-86 in overtime in the semifinals of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament on Tuesday night.

Cohen stole it at the top of the 3-point arc and raced the other way for a dunk and free throw for an 85-82 lead with 1:10 to go.

Jeremy Combs made a put-back shot with eight seconds left to give Texas Southern an 86-85 lead but after a timeout, Cohen dribbled down the court and sank a free-throw line jumper at 1.5. The Tigers' heave at the buzzer didn't hit the rim.

Trevian Bell added a career-high 21 points for the Phoenix (21-16). Tank Hemphill had 12 points and Cohen reached 1,000 points in just his 59th game with Green Bay.

Green Bay will play at Marshall on Thursday night in the championship game.

Tyrik Armstrong had 23 points for the Tigers (24-14). Combs added 21 points. Devocio Butler had 19 points.

Texas takes care of TCU, 58-44
    April 2, 2019
    ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

NEW YORK (AP) Kerwin Roach II is the Texas guard's name, the numerals not part of the running tally marker for his season suspensions.

Back on the roster, Roach stayed in the game and kept the Longhorns in the hunt to end the season in New York with a championship.

Roach turned a season marred by suspension into a can't-miss performance in the first half to help Texas get comfortable at Madison Square Garden and beat TCU 58-44 on Tuesday night for a spot in the NIT championship.

''It was tough for our team when he went out,'' coach Shaka Smart said. ''It was certainly tough for him. He was really, really down and disappointed in himself.''

''But, I told him, you're going to get to play again.''

He's got one more game left, and the Longhorns (20-16) will play Lipscomb for the title on Thursday night at the Garden.

Roach served two suspensions this season and was pained as he had to watch senior night festivities from the bench. Roach was reinstated for the Big 12 Tournament and led Texas to its fourth straight win in the NIT. He scored 13 of his 22 points in the first half to spark the Longhorns to a 15-point lead, and they held on against pesky TCU (23-14). Texas can win its first NIT title since 1978.

TCU had swept the season series against Texas and failed to go 3-0 against its in-state and Big 12 rival. Texas still has won 18 of the last 25 games against the Horned Frogs.

TCU coach Jamie Dixon insisted his team (with a 7-11 mark in the Big 12) was snubbed by the NCAA Tournament selection committee and used it as a motivating force for the program. Fueled by the snub, the Horned Frogs stormed past Sam Houston State, Nebraska and Creighton to get to New York.

Dixon has led a traditionally downtrodden program in TCU into a mid-pack Big 12 winner, one reason why speculation has swirled that UCLA has targeted him as a candidate for its vacancy.

''I have a great job. I'm very lucky where I'm at,'' Dixon said, dismissing UCLA questions.

Alex Robinson, who led TCU with 12 points, said Dixon made postseason play possible in Fort Worth, Texas.

''I remember before he got here, we were a really separated bunch,'' he said. ''He made sure we came together and played together.''

The Horned Frogs won the NIT in 2017 and made the NCAA Tournament last season for the first time in 20 years. The push for back-to-back tourney bids fell just short, and so did a second-half run that whittled the lead to five.

Roach dunked off a beautiful backdoor cut and Dylan Osetkowski scored a baseline layup off a pick-and-roll to give Texas breathing room and end the threat. Roach had averaged 15.7 points in the NIT, Osetkowski had 15.3 points and the duo delivered again in the semifinal. Osetkowski, who had 13 points and nine rebounds, connected on a late 3 that made it a 14-point lead and left only a few hundred burnt orange cheering faithful in the house.

Smart has only said that Roach violated university policy for the stretch-run suspension of his leading scorer (14.8 points). Roach had also been suspended for the season opener and the 2016 season opener. Against TCU, Roach hit his only 3 and made 6 of 8 shots overall in the first half for 13 points and a 31-17 lead.

The Longhorns went 1-4 in his absence over his most recent suspension ended before the Big 12 Tournament.

Three career suspensions, and one more chance to cut down the nets.

''He's a guy that's got a level of athleticism that allows him to get by his man and put the other team in a bit of a bind,'' Smart said.

        — Carolina 8, under -$120

        — Chicago 9.5

        Quote of the Day

“Everybody wanted to play out the season and everybody is disappointed. Everyone was led to believe that the Alliance was well-funded and we could play three years without making any money and this, that and the other. Obviously, everything that was said was not very truthful.” Steve Spurrier, talking about the AAF

        Monday’s quiz
Last time only one #1-seed got to the Final Four was three years ago, when #1-seed North Carolina lost to Villanova in the national title game.

        ***********************************

        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

        13) After eight weeks of games, the AAF has suspended operations, which is sad for the people who worked there. Players only got paid for the first seven weeks of the season.

Takes lots of money to fund a start-up league like this; there are rumors that the guy from the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes who invested in the AAF only wanted access to the technology for the league’s betting app, and once he had that, he pulled the plug on spending more money. Supposedly, he dropped $70M on this fiasco. Must be a good betting app.

Not sure what this means, if anything, for the XFL, which starts up next spring.

        12) So it is April 2 and here in upstate New York, spring is slowly emerging. It was 46 degrees when I left my house today; in the bank, a guy in line behind me was wearing shorts. Oy.

        11) Ronald Acuña signed a $100M extension with the Braves that keeps his contract under team control until 2028. Team-friendly deal.

        10) Seattle TV analyst Mike Blowers told an interesting story Monday night:

Blowers was playing for the Mariners in the mid-90’s; Lou Piniella (a noted hothead) was the manager. Blowers made two errors in the 9th inning that cost Seattle the last game of a road trip. Blowers: “Lou was sitting towards the front of the plane; he wasn’t real happy with me.”

Next game for Seattle is a home game; Blowers comes to the plate for the first time, and is booed when his name is announced. He hits a grand slam.

Second time up, Blowers is still booed a little; he hits a 3-run homer.

Third time up, Blowers gets a standing ovation.

Lessons: Baseball is a tough game; people are fickle.

        9) Washington Wizards fired team president Ernie Grunfeld after 16 seasons; Wizards are having their first losing season in six years. Washington hasn’t been to a conference final since 1979, so the franchise’s issues go way back before Grunfeld was around.

        8) Last Thursday, Michael Reed started in RF on Opening Day for the Giants; he went 0-8 with six strikeouts in four games and Tuesday, he was designated for assignment. Produce or else.

        7) Nationals’ SS Trea Turner tried to bunt last night; the ball hit his finger and he left the game, with what looked a lot like a broken finger.

        6) Former tennis star Billie Jean King is a minority owner of the LA Dodgers.

        5) Few years ago, I’m driving thru New Jersey and stop for gas. I get out of the car and start pumping the gas, and this little Asian guy comes running out of the store, yelling at me, waving his arms. Apparently it is illegal in New Jersey to pump your own gas. Who knew?

Funny thing, they pump it for you but the gas is still cheaper than it is in New York.

        4) From Christopher Kamka: Last time Cubs, White Sox, Bulls, Blackhawks all won on the same day was April 21, 2012, the day Philip Humber threw a perfect game for the White Sox.

        3) Puerto Rico has a larger population than 21 of the 50 states.

        2) Lipscomb 71, Wichita State 64— Shockers led by 11 in second half, but veteran Lipscomb team rallied back, scored last 14 points of the game and will play for the NIT title Thursday night.

        1) Texas 58, TCU 44— If you had Texas-Lipscomb in your NIT brackets, you’re about to get paid. TCU beat the Longhorns twice during the regular season, but came up empty here.

                • DePaul tops USF to even CBI series

                  ShareFacebookTwitterDiggMySpace

CHICAGO (AP) Max Strus scored 32 points and DePaul beat South Florida 100-96 in overtime Wednesday night, sending the College Basketball Invitational championship round to a deciding third game.

DePaul (19-16) will host the Bulls (23-14) on Friday night for the title.

Paul Reed had a career-high 28 points along with 16 rebounds and three blocks for the Blue Demons to tie the series at one game each. Femi Olujobi added 14 points.

Reed hit a 3-pointer to give DePaul an 82-79 lead, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 57 seconds left in regulation. USF worked the ball around the arc and Alexis Yetna made a 3-pointer to tie it with a half-minute left. After a timeout, Strus dribbled down the clock, but nearly turned it over as time expired.

Lyrik Shreiner got into the lane and made a contested layup to extend DePaul's lead to 94-88 with 1:41 left in overtime. The Blue Demons stayed ahead by making foul shots.

Laquincy Rideau had a career-high 35 points and eight assists and South Florida. Yetna had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and Justin Brown added 13 points.

                      **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

                      13) Was looking at an old picture of Ebbets Field in Brooklyn tonight; the dugouts there were a lot closer to the area behind home plate than they are now. I’m guessing dugouts were also much smaller then than they are now.

Which reminded me of an old story back when the Astros played in the Astrodome; someone told Houston’s owner that he could charge more money for seats behind the dugout, so that season, the Astrodome had the longest dugouts in major league history. Go figure.

                      12) Brewers 1, Reds 0— Memo to the Milwaukee analytics geniuses: This one is simple. Every time Freddy Peralta pitches, Manny Pina catches. Every time.

In 15 games with Pina behind the plate, batters have hit .168 vs Peralta.
In three games with other catchers, batters have hit .245 against him.

                      11) Nationals 9, Phillies 8— Jake Noll walked with the bases loaded to force in the winning run, handing the Phils their first loss, but he was sent to the minor leagues after the game, because Howie Kendrick comes off the DL tomorrow.

                      10) Last time the Phillies started a season 4-0? How about 1915. Wow.

                      9) Nuggets 113, Spurs 85— I’ve thought about picking NBA games on this site, but there are a lot of reasons why I don’t want to. Players taking games off when they’re not hurt is a big one.

Gregg Popovich got thrown out of this game 1:03 after it started, so obviously, the game didn’t mean much to him. Since the Spurs clinched a playoff spot last week, Popovich has been ejected twice in the Spurs’ last three games.

                      8) Coaching carousel:
                      — Texas A&M hired Virginia Tech coach Buzz Williams
                      — Fairfield hired Rutgers assistant Jay Young as its new coach.

                      7) Fred Hoiberg is the new basketball coach at Nebraska; he was born in Lincoln.

His grandfather Jerry Bush coached the Cornhuskers in the late 50’s. Hoiberg’s other grandfather was a Sociology professor at Nebraska.

                      6) There are two basketball Hall of Fames; there is the Naismith Hall of Fame in Springfield, MA which includes all of basketball, and there is the College Basketball Hall of Fame in Kansas City.

No idea what goes into the selection process for either, but this is odd:
                      — Jerry Tarkanian is in the Naismith HOF, but not the college basketball HOF.
                      — Eddie Sutton is in the college basketball HOF, but not the Naismith HOF.

                      5) Virginia coach Tony Bennett banked a $250K bonus when the Cavaliers won their Sweet 16 game, and another $250K when Virginia made it to the Final Four.

                      4) Fantasy baseball is funny sometimes; guy in our league cut Hunter Renfroe this week, and rightfully so, he had only started one game this season, but same night Renfroe got cut, he gets the start against Arizona and hits two homers off of Zack Greinke. Go figure.

                      3) Colorado Rockies signed P German Marquez to a five-year, $43M contract extension.

Cubs signed IF David Bote to a 5-year, $15M extension.

                      2) Average salary for an NFL referee this season is scheduled to be $205,000. Pretty good part-time job.

                      1) Advance planning: Chicago White Sox’ home opener for Thursday afternoon was postponed at roughly noon Wednesday; it’ll be played Friday instead.

Likewise, the Cardinals’ home opener with San Diego today was also moved to Friday.

                        • NIT Championship Betting Preview

Lipscomb vs. Texas (ESPN, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Two programs who found themselves on the wrong end of the NCAA Tournament bubble have managed to put that disappointment aside to reach the title game of the NIT Tournament on Thursday night and it should be an intriguing matchup.

Lipscomb was probably never going to get an at-large bid coming out of the Atlantic Sun after losing that tournament's title game to Liberty. However, if you were to ask the guys on Lipscomb now would they prefer a chance at some NIT hardware over what would have likely been a one or two-game run in the NCAA Tournament, a few of them would be hard-pressed not to take the opportunity they've got in front of them on Thursday night.

Texas stumbled in the latter half of their Big 12 slate to essentially play themselves out of NCAA Tournament consideration, but getting someone like Kerwin Roach reinstated for post-season basketball has helped this team forget about that rough stretch. The Longhorns were able to knock off hated rival TCU for the first time in three tries to get to this NIT championship, and they come into this meeting with mid-major Lipscomb as a slight favorite.

With the sights, sounds, and nerves of playing at MSG gone out the window for both teams after their semi-final wins, which program gets to add some hardware to their trophy case on campus this year?

Odds: Texas (-1.5); Total set at 143

Right off the bat, bettors following the market will see that the 'under' in this game got hit pretty hard upon opening in the high 140's here at BetOnline.ag, but it's settled around in at 143 since then. Title games in any sport tend to get 'under' love regardless, so I wouldn't put a whole lot of stock in such a significant move, but it's one to make note of for sure if you are considering a play on either side of this total. That's not something I'm interested in here though, as it's the side (and outright winner) I'm looking to back.

Texas is going to get some love here given they are the more known program in this spot and have dealt with better competition all year long, but I don't believe they should be the ones laying points here. Yes, it's been on the strength of the Longhorns defensive play that has gotten them here – holding Colorado to 55 points and TCU to 44 points the last two rounds was impressive – but for as solid as those results were, the Buffaloes and Horned Frogs were 124th and 128th in the country in offensive efficiency.

Enter Lipscomb, who ranks 32nd in the nation in that regard, scoring 83.6 points per game on the year, and have reached this point having played all of their NIT games either on the road or at a neutral site. And even still, Lipscomb has averaged 14.25 points more per game in the NIT than Texas has (85 vs 70.75) and the Longhorns have actually played a full five more minutes as well. Sometimes it's as simple as you need more points than the other team to win games, and in that respect, it's hard not to like Lipscomb's chances here.

Half of the Longhorns losses this year (8 of 16) have come when they closed as a favorite of any number this year, and there are some contests with them laying significant chalk as well. A 2-5 ATS run coming into this game isn't confidence building either, and with the overall youth this Longhorns team has in general, a championship game of any kind may still be too big of a moment for these guys.

Lipscomb has made a point during this NIT run that the level of play in these smaller mid-major conferences is improving every year, and having already taken out on Power 5 conference bubble team in NC State on this NIT run, the Bison get their first Division I basketball championship in school history on Thursday night.
