  • S16 - Friday's Late Tips
    Tony Mejia

East Region - Washington DC - Capital One Arena

    #4 Virginia Tech vs. #1 Duke - 9:39 PM EST - CBS

    Opening Odds: Duke -7.5, 144.5

-- Duke (31-5 SU, 18-18 ATS) wouldn't be playing on Friday night had it not been for an amazing amount of luck that helped it avoid a monumental upset at the hands of UCF on Sunday. From calls that went their way to fouls they got away with to missed alley-oops and tip-ins that teased but didn't add points to the Knights' total, the Blue Devils got through a game where they didn't play well and avoided elimination. It's always better to be lucky than good, especially when you're really good.

-- We'll see if the close call sparks the Blue Devils as they move from Columbia, S.C. to D.C., where they'll have plenty of support and a familiar opponent to focus on as they try to get to the Elite Eight for the second straight season, which is something Mike Krzyzewski hasn't accomplished since 1998-99. Those teams featured Elton Brand, Shane Battier, Trajan Langdon and William Avery, who while older formed a group similar to this one led by freshmen Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, Cam Reddish and Tre Jones.

-- In order to advance, Duke will have to avenge a loss it suffered against Virginia Tech (26-8 SU, 18-15-1 ATS) on Feb. 26 in Blacksburg. Williamson wasn't available for that game due to a knee sprain caused by his shoe disaster, so the Blue Devils struggled to protect the paint and Kerry Blackshear had his way with Javin DeLaurier and Marques Bolden, finishing with 23 points and 10 boards. Although Williamson was sidelined, the Hokies still deserve major props for their victory since it came without injured point guard Justin Robinson, who has since returned in this NCAA Tournament after being out since Jan. 30. The senior had 13 points and looked sharp in this past weekend's win over Liberty, a game Virginia Tech would've struggled to survive without him.

-- Versatile wing Ty Outlaw scored 11 points in that first meeting with Duke and should be in the starting lineup despite marijuana being found in his room by campus police while he was playing in last weekend's games in San Jose. After passing a drug test, Outlaw has been cleared to play since he won't be suspended. He hit a huge tie-breaking 3-pointer to help defeat the Blue Devils and will be invaluable in helping match up with their wings.

-- The Blue Devils are 5-0 since Williamson returned in the ACC Tournament and has shot nearly 69 percent from the field and 47 percent from 3-point range in averaging 27.6 points and 8.8 rebounds. He stole the UCF game for Duke with his late heroics and will be tasked with keeping Blackshear from imposing his will inside while testing a thin Virginia Tech front line.

-- Robinson has talked about the Hokies beating the Blue Devils in three of his four years on campus, so there won't be any trepidation over facing the nation's top-ranked team. Buzz Williams has one foot out the door since he's likely headed to fill the Texas A&M opening whenever Virginia Tech is eliminated, but they'll paitently wait for him as long as that takes so it shouldn't affect his veteran team.

-- The 'under' has prevailed in the last four games involving the Hokies, who rank ninth in the country in scoring defense, surrendering 61.7 points per game. Duke ranks ninth nationally in scoring offense with an output of 83.4 points per game.

-- Virginia Tech entered the NCAA Tournament with 60/1 odds to win it all, per the Westgate Superbook, which came down from 80/1 on Selection Sunday. The latest odds update has the Hokies at 40/1. The Blue Devils were the favorite (9/4) to win it all when the NCAAs began but their scare vs. UCF has moved them to 3/1.

Midwest Region - Kansas City, MO - Sprint Center

    #3 Houston vs. #2 Kentucky - 9:57 PM EST - TNT

    Opening Odds: Kentucky -2.5, 135

-- While Kentucky (29-6 SU, 18-16-1 ATS) can put together the fifth 30-win season of John Calipari's 10-year stint in Lexington, it's clear nothing is going to come easily after last weekend's close call against Wofford. The 'Cats surrendered an average of 50 points in their first two games in Jacksonville and will likely have to grind out at least one more victory given the opposition. Houston (33-3 SU, 22-12-2 ATS) ranks seventh in scoring defense (61.0 ppg). Kentucky allows 64.5 points per game, 27th in the country.

-- Kentucky has been working without top forward P.J. Washington, who arrived in Kansas City wearing a cast on his left foot after spraining it in the SEC Tournament. Big Blue's leading scorer (14.8 ppg) and rebounder (7.6 rpg) did a few things in practice but is considered questionable to play and may end up getting an additional two days to see if he can't be more effective in a regional final. The problem of course would then become getting there without him. E.J. Montgomery, Keldon Johnson and Nick Richards have filled in next to Reid Travis. Houston coach Kelvin Sampson said that he hadn't watched any tape of the 'Cats without Washington, expecting him to play.

-- The Cougars are playing in their first Sweet 16 since 1984. The Hakeem Olajuwon-led version has some company now that this group has re-written the school-record for wins after surviving the Buckeyes 74-59.

-- Houston's calling card is a defense that has held opponents to the lowest field-goal percentage defense (.366) and top 3-point percentage defense in the country (.278).

-- Offensively, the Cougars are led by point guard Galen Robinson, who just set a school-record playing in his 135th career game. He leads the team in assists (4.9) and is one of those old-school point guards who controls pace at both ends, so his matchup with pesky freshman Ashton Hagans will also play a huge role. Corey Davis, Jr. is Houston's top scorer (17.2 ppg), but junior Armani Brooks (13.2 ppg) isn't far behind and can similarly light teams up from the perimeter.

-- Houston was 40/1 to win the NCAA Tournament per Westgate when the tournament began and is now 30/1 after reaching the Sweet 16. The 'Cats were 12/1 when the tournament began and are now 16/1, so the books aren't all that confident in their ability to get through the weekend.

-- The 'under' is on a 4-1 run in Houston games, part of a 9-4 stretch over the last 13. The 'under' is 16-5 over the past few months in UK games since Jan. 12 and has prevailed in six of the Wildcats' last eight contests.

              • Auburn outshoots UNC, first No. 1 ousted
                March 29, 2019
                By The Associated Press

Auburn earned its second trip to the Elite Eight by coasting to a to a 97-80 victory over the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region. The trigger-happy Tigers overcame an early deficit with a hot-shooting second to return to the region final for the first time in 33 years.

North Carolina (29-7) was the first top seed eliminated from this year's NCAA Tournament. Auburn (29-9) tied its 1998-99 mark for most wins in a season.

The Tar Heels' bevy of athletes could do nothing to slow down Auburn, which got 20 points and 11 boards from Chuma Okeke before he left with a gruesome knee injury late in the game. The big forward certainly didn't do it alone as the Tigers had six in double-figures scoring, and they knocked down 17 of 37 3-pointers in a virtuoso shooting performance.

Malik Dunbar finished with 13 points, Bryce Brown and Danjel Purifoy scored 12 apiece, and Jared Harper scored nine while dishing out 11 assists in Auburn's latest takedown of college hoops royalty.

                DUKE 75, VIRGINIA TECH 73

Zion Williamson scored 23 points, RJ Barrett had 18 and a career-high 11 assists, and Tre Jones added 22 points and eight assists, helping No. 1 overall seed Duke avoid an NCAA Tournament upset and edge No. 4-seeded Virginia Tech 75-73.

The Hokies had their chances in the closing seconds, the final one coming on an inbounds play with 1.1 seconds left. The ball went to Ahmed Hill as he jumped to the basket wide open, but his attempt to tie it fell short. Hill dropped to the court on his back as Zion Williamson - fittingly - grabbed the basketball and smiled broadly. It was similar to the way two last-gasp shots went off the rim for Duke's second-round opponent, UCF.

Before that final miss, both Hill and Ty Outlaw airballed 3-point attempts that would have put Virginia Tech ahead.

But Duke got through, even though it trailed much of the evening, including 38-34 at halftime.

                KENTUCKY 62, HOUSTON 58

Tyler Herro hit a 3-pointer with 25.8 seconds left to give Kentucky the lead after Houston had erased a double-digit lead, and the Wildcats escaped their NCAA Midwest regional semifinal with a 62-58 win over Houston.

Herro's huge basket gave the Wildcats a 60-58 lead and came after Houston's Corey Davis Jr. had his driving shot swatted away by PJ Washington, who was making his return after missing the first two tournament games with a left foot injury.

Davis missed what would have been a tying layup before Herro hit two more free throws to secure the win and send the second-seeded Wildcats to the Elite Eight for the seventh time in 10 years, Kentucky will face Southeastern Conference rival Auburn for a trip to the Final Four.

Herro led the Wildcats (30-6) with 19 points and Washington added 16.

                MICHIGAN STATE 80, LSU 63

Aaron Henry scored a career-best 20 and fellow frosh Gabe Brown had 15 as second-seeded Michigan State beat third-seeded LSU 80-63 on Friday night to move on to the NCAA Tournament's East Region final.

Coach Tom Izzo's upperclassmen-heavy team is one victory away from its first Final Four appearance since 2015.

Michigan State took it to LSU on the glass, outrebounding the Tigers 34-20. At halftime, Michigan State had as many offensive rebounds as LSU had total boards, at times making it look like 5-on-4 when the ball came off the rim.

Michigan State had five 3s in the first 10 minutes alone, and LSU never adjusted defensively.

Tremont Waters scored 10 points during a 13-0 LSU run spanning the first half into the second to cut the deficit to four. Then Michigan State blew the game wide open with 3-pointers. The Spartans hit four of their first five 3-point attempts out of halftime.

                    Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

                    13) Auburn 97, North Carolina 80— Didn’t see this coming. Since 1993, Tar Heels were 13-1 in this round; not sure if Nassir Little’s illness was a factor, but the whole team looked sick and kind of lackluster.

NCAA enforcement people must be thrilled; Auburn had one assistant coach indicted last year, another one has been suspended as part of the adidas payoff scandal. Now the Tigers are in the Elite 8 for only the second time (1986). Go figure.

Bad news for Auburn; they lost F Chuma Okeke with a knee injury that the Auburn people said was likely a serious one.

                    12) Duke 75, Virginia Tech 73— Understood that this is irrelevent, but Duke is 0-3 vs spread in this tournament, 3-12 vs spread in their last 15 games. Tre Jones was shooting 23.2% on the arc before this game; he went 5-7 Friday and saved the Blue Devils’ butts.

Buzz Williams is supposedly off to Texas A&M next season; if he doesn’t already have a deal with the Aggies, his price tag probably went up a little during this game.

                    11) Michigan State 80, LSU 63— Spartans get to the Elite 8 for first time in four years; since 2005, Izzo is 4-1 in Elite 8 games. As for LSU, their search for a new coach heads into high gear, since HC Will Wade is also part of the adidas debacle.

                    10) Kentucky 62, Houston 58— Tyler Herro scored the last five points of the game; Kentucky will play SEC rival Auburn in the regional final Sunday.

                    9) Cardinals 9, Brewers 5— In his second game for the Cardinals, Paul Goldschmidt hit three home runs.

                    8) Opening Day rosters in the major leagues have 251 players who were born outside this country, representing 20 different countries and territories.

                    7) Coaching carousel:
                    — Cal Bears hired former Nevada/Georgia coach Mark Fox.

                    6) Brewers closer Corey Knebel will undergo Tommy John surgery next week; Josh Hader is expected to do most of the closing for Milwaukee.

                    5) Angels OF Justin Upton will be out 8-12 weeks (turf toe).

                    4) West Virginia could have eight returning basketball players next season, but four of them put their names in the transfer portal, which means they might transfer. They don’t have to, but obviously they’re looking into it. Mountaineers could have as many as nine scholarships open.

                    3) This was Virginia’s third Sweet 16 in the last six years; it is their second Elite 8. In the 13 years before Tony Bennett got to Charlottesville, Virginia won a total of one NCAA tournament game.

                    2) Colorado 6, Miami 1— CF Ian Desmond robbed Lewis Brinson of a game-tying homer in the 8th inning, then the Rockies tacked on four runs in the ninth. Strong outing for Colorado P Marquez, who is very strong away from Coors Field.

                    1) Memo to directors of televised baseball games; on fly balls, show the outfielder, not the ball. The outfielder(s) will tell you where the ball is going. Showing the ball in the air is useless.

                    • Edwards shooting into Curry territory
                      March 29, 2019
                      By The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Yes, Carsen Edwards' phone blew up after he and the Purdue Boilermakers advanced to their first Elite Eight since 2000, a step away from the school's first Final Four since 1980.

No, the junior doesn't think all the love means people are actually comparing him to Steph Curry, even though his performances echo Curry's run at Davidson a decade ago.

''I haven't really done enough yet to consider my name getting thrown around with Steph Curry,'' Edwards said Friday. ''But just kind of the stats was something that's similar to his. For the most part, I don't look at it like my name's thrown around with Steph Curry. Just a cool statistic I was able to do in the last four games.''

Edwards is the first player since Curry to score at least 25 points in four straight tournament games. Curry's streak was five straight with at least 25 points at Davidson in 2007 and 2008. Edwards can match that Saturday night in the South regional final against top-seeded Virginia (32-3) if he keeps knocking down 3s.

Edwards has picked up where he left off in the NCAA Tournament last year, when he scored 30 in a loss against Texas Tech. The junior guard opened this tournament scoring 26 against Old Dominion, followed up with a career-high in knocking off defending champ Villanova in the second round, then had 29 Thursday night in a 99-94 overtime win over Tennessee.

''He's a great shooter, and he comes off a lot of off-ball screens,'' Virginia freshman guard Kihei Clark said of Edwards. ''I'm going to have to stay on his hip pocket and make sure I get a hand up and contest.''

If Edwards keeps shooting 3s the way he has, he'll have a chance to match another Curry streak.

STATS noted Edwards has made four or more 3-pointers in four consecutive NCAA Tournament games after he went 5 for 15 outside the arc against Tennessee. Only Curry has a longer streak. Curry made four or more 3s in five straight games over 2007 and 2008.

Edwards entered this tournament after a chilly 4 for 17 shooting performance, losing to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament.

Purdue coach Matt Painter doesn't worry when the 6-foot-1, 200-pound guard from Atascocita, Texas, is missing and keeps shooting. He's also confident Edwards will handle any extra attention on the Boilermakers' biggest stage yet the same way by focusing on the next game and next shot.

''He just plays,'' Painter said. ''I think that helps because he can get in some different situations, and he's always very confident whether he's making shots or he's not. He thinks he's going to make the next one. I think that's a good quality to have as long as you have the skills to do it, and he obviously does.''

Edwards isn't just shooting well at the right time.

He led the Big Ten in scoring this season and ranked fifth nationally with 26 20-point games this season. He became Purdue's all-time leading scorer in the NCAA Tournament by halftime against Tennessee, and he's also leading this tournament with 97 points through three games.

Edwards has played all but 38 seconds through three games of this year's tournament, only going to the bench at the end of the Boilermakers' win over Villanova in the second round. He's also been handling the ball a lot for Purdue after P.J. Thompson graduated.

No matter who's helping defend Edwards, Virginia coach Tony Bennett said the Cavaliers will have to play team defense to challenge the Purdue guard.

''He's pretty unique,'' Bennett said. ''He's so aggressive. I mean, there's been so many great guards in the ACC, and he's up there with them how he can score and do things.''

                      • Texas Tech's coach spends life on edge
                        March 29, 2019
                        By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Chris Beard burst onto the scene at the NCAA Tournament three years ago with a splint on his hand, a chip on his shoulder and a nagging thought that all but guaranteed he would never get outworked: Guys like him only get one chance.

The hand has healed. The chip - it's as big as ever. As for that thought - well, even though he's taken Texas Tech to the brink of the Final Four for the second straight year, chances are it will never really go away.

Beard comes from the Bob Knight coaching tree, which helps explain how he broke his hand during a halftime fight with a locker room grease board when he was coaching Arkansas-Little Rock to the tournament, and an eventual upset of Purdue, in 2016.

Yet the story of this 46-year-old hoops coach in a hurry is not one of uncontrolled rage, a la Knight in his worst moments, but rather, one about the lessons of life, and coaching, that get learned when nothing comes for free.

''I wasn't a great player, I don't have a famous grandfather,'' Beard said, in explaining his ethos back in 2016. ''I get up every day, surround myself with winners. Every day I feel like I'm an underdog.''

He'll be one again on Saturday, when third-seeded Texas Tech faces No. 1 Gonzaga with a trip to the Final Four on the line.

                        But the math is changing.

Yes, Gonzaga has two NBA-caliber big men in Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke, along with the nation's top-scoring offense and a coach who has taken the exact opposite career path as Beard. Over the past 30 years, Mark Few has been at exactly one school.

But Texas Tech has one NBA-caliber big man of its own - Jarrett Culver, who could've gone a lot of places, but chose to stay close to home, to try to build something with Beard in Lubbock - along with the nation's most stifling defense.

Beard's career path, it turns out, is working out, too. Over the same 30 years Few has been at Gonzaga, Beard has wound through 12 spots (13 if you count the 19 days at UNLV - more on that later), sweeping gym floors, taping ankles and writing game plans at Incarnate Word, Fort Scott Community College, Seminole State and a handful of other outposts where 737 jet service is not available.

''I'm always trying to act like I belong, and that's just me,'' Beard said. ''How I keep those players feeling the same way, it's just who we are. We've got really good players, but we don't have any McDonald's All-Americans. We don't have anybody on our team that has been given anything.''

Since nothing comes easy, Beard has built a team that cedes ground very unwillingly.

At the most basic level, the key to a Texas Tech defense that has allowed more than 65 points in only nine of 35 its games is clogging the middle and giving teams - most of them presumably with more offensive talent than Beard could ever dream of - only bad choices: Work the ball to the baseline and try to make something happen from those tiny slivers of space, or take your chances driving the lane and paying the price.

Asked how the players make the system work, Culver said they have to, lest they ''have to deal with Coach Adams'' - assistant coach Mark Adams is the team's defensive guru.

What, pray tell, does ''dealing with Coach Adams'' mean?

Beard interrupted: ''I think it's the same thing that happened at Michigan State, and it's called coaching.''

The message there is that Beard would have no compunction about being like Tom Izzo (or Knight, for that matter), who got called out last week for his very public berating of freshman Aaron Henry during the Spartans' first-round win over Bradley.

And yet, for all his talk about tough love, Beard's most viral moment so far this tournament came when he stopped a team meeting and brought tears to the eyes of his Italian-born guard, Davide Moretti, whose family was waiting in the back of the room after flying in from Italy to watch him play.

''When I first got here, he just made me feel included and confident right away,'' said Matt Mooney, a graduate transfer from South Dakota who arrived for this season. ''He talked me up a little bit in front of the guys, and he's real good at putting guys in the right positions and making you feel like you're part of the team right away.''

In Beard's world, the team is a family - but as everyone knows, basketball families operate in one-year cycles; that specific group only gets one chance to do big things together.

It's why Beard always feels bad for seniors who get stuck on programs going through coaching changes. A coach who moves around as much as he has is bound to encounter a few of those seniors along the way.

''You bust your ass for four years, then your senior year, a coaching change happens, and all of a sudden, some new guy comes in, and he's talking about building it,'' Beard said last year, the day before Texas Tech fell to Villanova in the Elite Eight. ''I mean, ain't got time to build it.''

It may lend some insight into the biggest blemish on Beard's resume. Earlier this week, he declined to go into details about his hiring in 2016 at Texas Tech, which came only 19 days after he had left Arkansas Little-Rock to take an open job at UNLV.

It was certainly not his proudest moment, but clearly, Beard felt Texas Tech - a place with more money in a bigger conference, and where he had previously been an assistant for Knight - offered an opportunity to do bigger things more quickly.

Regardless of the reason, it takes a certain kind of guy to leave Las Vegas for Lubbock: Perhaps, the kind of guy who thinks he'll only get one chance.

''We've got a chip on our shoulder,'' Beard said. ''We weren't supposed to be here.''

                        • UVA, Purdue meet in South final
                          March 29, 2019
                          By The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Top-seeded Virginia features a stingy defense that just held Oregon to 49 points.

High scoring has carried No. 3 seed Purdue, which scored 99 points to beat Tennessee in overtime and earn its first Elite Eight appearance since 2000. Both schools expect their respective strengths to be tested Saturday night in an intriguing South Region final with a Final Four berth at stake.

''Our defense is going to take us as far as we want to go,'' Virginia guard Kihei Clark said Friday. ''Just going to have to do a good job on the defensive end.''

The winner will end a decades-long Final Four drought. Purdue (26-9) hasn't advanced that far since 1980, while Virginia (32-3) hasn't been since 1984. It would also break new ground for Purdue coach Matt Painter and Cavaliers counterpart Tony Bennett, who's in his second regional final in four years.

Virginia's tournament path began roughly against Gardner-Webb and smoothed out some against Oklahoma before it had to grind past No. 12 seed Oregon for a 53-49 victory . That was somewhat expected, but the Cavs also have a good offense and aim to show it.

''We're going to need a complete performance from everyone,'' Bennett said.

Virginia's task is slowing a Purdue squad that has scored 186 points and averaging 1.33 points per possession in NCAA Tournament wins over defending champion Villanova and Tennessee. The Cavs' main focus is slowing Boilermakers junior guard Carsen Edwards, who had 29 points in the Sweet 16 win and expects Virginia to present a greater challenge.

''Virginia, I feel like, is apart from a lot of teams defensively,'' Edwards said. ''It will be something different for us.''

The Boilermakers are coming off a 99-94 win over No. 2 seed Tennessee after blowing an 18-point, second-half lead and trailing by two in the final seconds. Edwards was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made two of three free throws to force overtime, and Purdue simply reset in extra time for a five-point win.

Purdue knows that kind of scoring won't come easy against Virginia's pack line defense that pressures the ball handler and sealing off the lane.

And particularly with so much at stake.

''You have to be able to move the basketball,'' Purdue coach Matt Painter said. ''You have to be able to be efficient. Then you've got to be able to make the right decisions.''

Added Edwards: ''Whatever it is that we have to do to win, whether that's just battling it out on the defensive end and trying to stop them as well or if it's a slower-paced game, just trying to value each possession. So we'll see.''

Other things to watch in the South Region final:

                          STEPH CURRY TERRITORY

Edwards is the first player since Curry to score at least 25 points in four consecutive NCAA Tournament games. Curry's streak was five straight at Davidson in 2007 and 2008. According to STATS, only Curry has had a longer streak than Edwards in making four or more 3-pointers in four consecutive tournament games. Curry made four or more 3s in all five of his tournament games in 2007 and 2008.

                          FOGGY MEMORY

Virginia guard Kyle Guy and Purdue's Ryan Cline were teammates on an Indianapolis-area AAU team and keep in touch. But as high school counterparts, Guy recalled making Cline fall on a crossover move that Cline didn't remember and planned to ask him about. ''That's not cool of him to say,'' Cline said, laughing. ''I'll definitely talk to him about that.''

                          NO REST

Bennett said the Atlantic Coast Conference's schedule of playing Saturday and Monday games has prepared his team for the tournament's rigors of playing twice in three days. This break is slightly different after Virginia's Sweet 16 game started late Thursday and ended early Friday morning, but the coach has urged his players to get used to a quick turnaround.

''You're going to have to play a big-time opponent on one day's prep,'' Bennett said. ''I said in a way, set your mind to it.''

                          PAST MEETINGS

Virginia and Purdue are meeting for the first time in the NCAA Tournament and third time overall. They've split two games, with the Cavs winning the previous meeting 61-59 at Purdue on Nov. 29, 2006.

                          • Elite matchup: Gonzaga's offense vs. Texas Tech's defense
                            March 29, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) Leave it to Texas Tech's Matt Mooney to succinctly sum up Saturday's West Regional final matchup against Gonzaga.

''They're really good offensively and we're really good defensively. So we will see who wins out,'' the Red Raiders guard said before Friday's practice.

Really good might be an understatement. According to KenPom.com, the Bulldogs have the nation's top-rated offense while Texas Tech has the nation's top-ranked defense.

And at this stage, neither side is about to alter their identity with a spot in next week's Final Four on the line.

''We've been scoring at a high rate all year so do things that's been working for us, don't try to switch anything up or vary off,'' Gonzaga guard Zach Norvell Jr. said.

''Things can get a little mucked up understanding that they do have a high-level defense. Just try to stay level-headed and keep the same plan of attack that we came into the game with.''

The top-seeded Zags (33-3) - who defeated Florida State in Thursday's first regional semifinal - are also first in the nation in scoring (88.6 points per game), field goal shooting rate (53.2 percentage) and scoring margin (23.9). Junior forward Rui Hachimura leads the up-tempo attack, averaging 19.6 points per game.

Senior forward Brandon Clarke is also a huge presence in the paint, averaging 18.9 points and 8.5 rebounds. Clarke said the one thing that stuck out about Texas Tech's win over Michigan was how physical the Red Raiders were in the paint.

''I feel like Michigan lagged running in transition which is something we're going to want to do tomorrow,'' he said. ''I just feel like they couldn't really score on their late touches in the paint either and they weren't shooting well from three. But I feel like that's stuff that we're great at as a team, so we should be fine tomorrow.''

The third-seeded Red Raiders (29-6) have held teams to 59.2 points per game, which is third in the nation, and 36.8 percent shooting from the field, which is second. They've also held 12 opponents under 55 points.

They are led by Jarrett Culver, who was the first Big 12 Conference Player of the Year in program history. The sophomore scored 22 points against Michigan and is averaging 18.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.

Senior center Norense Odiase said there isn't one word to describe Texas Tech's defense. When asked if it was stifling, aggressive or suffocating, he said it was all of the above.

''We're tough, long and active,'' Odiase said. ''We contest shots and make it hard for their best players to score. We try to keep it out of the middle. Just a lot of active things.''

Gonzaga, which is in the Elite Eight for the fourth time, is looking to make its second Final Four trip. Texas Tech is in the Elite Eight in consecutive seasons for the first time and trying for its first Final Four.

Other things to watch in the West Regional final:

                            3'S THE KEY

Gonzaga was 7 of 19 from beyond the arc against Florida State as Norvell had four 3-pointers. Texas Tech forced Michigan to miss its first 18 3-point attempts before it made one in the final minute.

The Zags will need to shoot well from long distance if they are going to counter the Red Raiders' pressure in the paint.

''Michigan wasn't getting quality looks. It seemed like Texas Tech was everywhere on the court,'' Gonzaga senior Geno Crandall said.

                            SHORT LAYOFF, NO PROBLEM

Texas Tech coach Chris Beard and Gonzaga's Mark Few said their teams are used to playing two games in three days during the regular season.

''We also schedule these type situations to put our guys in different situations, whether it be back-to-back or one-day preps or two-days. Really we just stay true,'' Beard said. ''We recognize that we're on the biggest stage and we're having a lot of fun here, but we've got to be who we are.''

                            BOUNCING BACK

Both teams have done a good job of putting losses in their conference tournaments behind them. Gonzaga has won its NCAA Tournament games by an average margin of 21.3 points and Texas Tech has held all three of its opponents under 60 points.

                            KEEP AN EYE ON ...

Texas Tech guard Davide Moretti, who is the one player that Gonzaga does not want to put on the foul line. The sophomore has made 93 of 101 free throws this season and is second in the nation at 92.1 percent.

                                West Region Final (Anaheim, CA)

No. 3 Texas Tech vs. No. 1 Gonzaga (TBS, 6:09 PM EST)

                                Opening Odds: Gonzaga -4½, 137

-- Texas Tech (29-6 SU, 18-16 ATS) registered a 63-44 victory against Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen to advance to the Elite Eight. A No. 1 seed stands in the way of their first-ever trip to a Final Four for the Red Raiders.

-- The Red Raiders have won each of their three NCAA Tournament games by at least 15 points, winning by an average of 18.0 points per game (PPG). The Red Raiders are 3-0 against the spread with the 'under' 3-0 in their three games so far during the Big Dance.

-- Jarrett Culver continues to improve his NBA draft stock, as he dropped 22 points on 9-for-19 shooting across 32 minutes in the victory against the Wolverines. He misfired on all five of his 3-pointer attempts, but he was 4-for-4 at the charity stripe while adding four rebounds, three steals and just one turnover. Culver is averaging 22.3 PPG, 5.3 assists per game (APG) and 7.3 rebounds per game (RPG) through his three tournament games.

-- The Red Raiders benefited by the fact the Wolverines went 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) from downtown, but the Texas Tech defense obviously had a lot to do with that poor shooting. They also finished 16-for-49 (32.7 percent) from the field, as the Red Raiders were relentless on the defensive end.

-- Texas Tech ended up shooting 43.6 percent (24-for-55) from the field, including 6-for-19 (31.6 percent) from behind the perimeter while being outrebounded 33-27. The Red Raiders took decent care of the basketball, however, turning it over just seven total times to 14 for Michigan.

-- The Red Raiders roll into this one 6-1 ATS over the past seven outings, and they're 5-1 ATS in the past six NCAA Tournament games. They're also 10-1 ATS in the past 11 against teams with a winning overall record.

-- The 'under' has cashed in four straight NCAA Touranemnt games, and the under is 19-7 in the past 26 neutral-site battles while going 46-21-1 in the past 68 non-conference battles.

-- Gonzaga (33-3 SU, 23-13 ATS) dropped Florida State by a 14-point margin in the third round, and they have won each of their first three NCAA Tournament games by 12 or more points. Expect the Bulldogs to get a much better test from the defensive-minded Red Raiders.

-- The Bulldogs saw Brandon Clarke posted a double-double, as he registered 15 points with 12 rebounds, two assists and a steal with five blocked shots across 34 minutes on 6-for-15 shooting. The Zags had balanced scoring, as Rui Hachimura had 17 points, Zach Norvell Jr. had 14 points and Josh Perkins ended up with 14 points. Norvell Jr. led the way with four of the team's seven triples against the Seminoles.

-- Clarke has been a blocked shots machine in the NCAA Tournament, registered 13 swats through three games, and he has at least one blocked shot in 16 consecutive games since Jan. 19 in a lopsided win at Portland.

-- Gonzaga ended up No. 1 in the nation with 88.2 points per game, and they also led the country with a 52.8 field-goal percentage, and they're a good free-throw shooting team, too. Often overlooked is their defense, as they ranked sixth in opponent field-goal percentage at 38.7, and they were a solid 18th in 3-pointer percentage defense.

-- The Bulldogs, one of three remaining No. 1 seeds after UNC got the gate on Friday, have covered in six of their past seven non-conference games. They're also 9-4-1 ATS in the past 14 games against Big 12 foes.

-- Gonzaga has cashed the under in six of their past seven non-conference tilts, while the under is 5-2 in the past seven NCAA Tournament battles. The under is also 11-5 in the past 16 following a cover in their previous outing.

-- These teams last met on Nov. 23, 2007, with Gonzaga falling 73-63.

                                West Region Final (Louisville, KY)

No. 3 Purdue vs. No. 1 Virginia (TBS, 8:49 PM EST)

                                Opening Odds: Virginia -4½, 126

-- Purdue (26-9 SU, 20-14 ATS) bumped off the No. 2 seed Tennessee in an overtime thriller, 99-94, as Carsen Edwards continues to roll up big numbers. He went for 29 points, four rebounds, three assists and just one turnover with five 3-pointers, as his solid NCAA Tournament continues. He has scored at least 26 points in each of his three NCAA Tournament games after a disappointing loss in the first game of their Big Ten Tournament against Minnesota. He is also averaging 5.7 RPG during the tourney.

-- The Boilermakers weren't a one-man band against the Vols, however. Ryam Cline went for 27 points, four assists and seven 3-pointers with a steal before fouling out in 29 minutes. Nojel Eastern and Matt Haarms each contributed 11 points, and Haarms was a defensive force with three blocked shots.

-- Purdue was huge by hitting 15-of-31 shots from behind the arc, good for a 48.4 percent mark from downtown. And they barely won in overtime, as Tennessee was also 12-for-24 from down deep.

-- The Boilermakers have cashed in four of the past five outings, and they're 9-4 ATS in their past 13 NCAA Tournament battles while going 41-19 over the past 60 non-conference battles.

-- The over is 5-2 in the past seven games for Purdue, while going 40-17-1 in the past 58 neutral-site affairs. The over is also 5-0 in their past five following a straight-up win and 5-0 in their past five following a cover, too. The under is 13-6 in the past 19 against ACC foes, however.

-- Virginia (32-3 SU, 24-11 ATS) is doing what they do best in the NCAA Tournament, locking it down on defense. They have averaged just 62.3 PPG through their three games in the Big Dance. They're still thriving, winning by an average of 10.3 PPG, holding the opposition to 52.0 PPG.

-- In a defensive battle with a score reminiscent of the pre-shot clock era, UVA scratched out a 53-49 win against No. 11 Oregon on Thursday. Kyle Guy's shooting woes continued, as he was just 4-for-15 from the field, and 2-for-11 from behind the 3-point line, while ending up with 10 points and four rebounds in his 39 minutes. He is averaging just 7.3 PPG with 5.0 RPG so far in the Big Dance.

-- There were a lot of ugly offensive numbers on Thursday, as UVA hit just 20-of-56 from the field (35.7 percent), yet they still won. All five starters missed more shots than they took, and only five players even attempted a shot. Mamadi Diakite was a defensive force, pulling down 11 rebounds with two steals and two blocked shots to lead the way.

-- The Cavaliers check in 44-20-1 ATS in the past 65 games, and 4-1 ATS in their past five against the Big Ten. The Hoos are also 17-7 ATS in the past 24 against non-conference opponents. However, UVA is 1-6 ATS in the past seven NCAA Tournament battles.

-- The under is 4-1 in the past five for Virginia, while going 4-1 in their past five NCAA Tournament games, too. The under is 5-1 in the past six neutral-site contests, while cashing in seven of the past eight non-conference tilts. The under is also 8-3 in the past 11 battles for Virginia against the Big Ten conference.

-- This is the first meeting between these schools since Nov. 29, 2006 when the Boilermakers scratched out a 61-59 victory.
