Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a frigid weekend…….

13) My opinion is that I write better when I’m annoyed, so today’s article might be pretty terrible, because this was a great freakin’ weekend.

— The weather here was awful all weekend, we had a foot of snow, but DirecTV never went out, except for a couple of the movie channels late Saturday night.
— My car started in 0 degree weather Sunday night, because I got a new battery Thursday.
— Watched a ton of basketball Saturday; seems like it was a week ago.
— Oh yeah, the Rams are going to the Super Bowl!!! Tremendous!!!

12) Rams 26, Saints 23 OT— Not many games where the winning team led for 0:00 the whole game, except after the last play. This game turned on a fake punt by the Rams when they trailed 13-0 with 14:23 left in 2nd quarter- they looked like a dead team until then.

Scouting is important in football; I had never heard of Missouri Western University until the Rams drafted a kicker from Missouri Western in the 6th round of the 2012 draft. Rams were in St Louis at the time; not sure if that helped them find Greg Zuerlein, but they did, and boy did that pay off Sunday night in the Superdome.

Greg the Leg booted a 48-yard FG to tie the game, a 57-yard FG to win it as the Rams, who did not lead at any point in regulation, won their 4th NFC title, 26-23.

11) I mention this every so often, but the NFL is awesome because the difference between the winning and losing teams is so often EXTREMELY thin.

Go back to 2016, the Rams were 4-5 when they decided to give Jared Goff his first NFL start; they were playing Miami at home, and led 10-0 with 5:00 left. If they win the game, they’re 5-5, everyone is happy, and they probably finish 7-9 at worst- they have said since then if they had wound up 7-9 that year, they wouldn’t have fired Jeff Fisher.

Miami won that game 13-10, the Rams didn’t win another game that season and a coaching change was made. And what a change it has been!!!

They wouldn’t have hired Sean McVay if they finished 7-9, so thank the good Lord they blew that 10-0 lead against the Dolphins. Or else today’s fun wouldn’t have happened.

11) Patriots 37, Chiefs 31 OT— What a day for the NFL; two overtimes in conference title games when the weather in lot of the country was terrible. TV ratings have to be huge. Patriots head to their 11th Super Bowl.

Tony Romo is amazingly good on TV, the best NFL TV analyst ever; he calls out plays before they happen, the way Hank Stram used to do working Monday night games on the radio.

Tough night for the replay center; awful lot of close replay decisions in this game.

10) SUNY-Morrisville plans to roll out a program next fall that will teach their students how to grow marijuana. Anticipation of a Cannabis Industry Minor is a result of the expectation that New York is expected to legalize recreational marijuana soon.

9) Nick Foles came up four snaps short of a $1M bonus for playing in 33% of Philly’s snaps, but the Eagles did the right thing and gave Foles the $1M anyway.

8) Only four of the first 29 Mountain West basketball games were decided by fewer than ten points. League has slipped a decent amount the last couple years.

7) Providence 79, Marquette 68— Marquette retired Dwyane Wade’s #3 jersey at halftime of this game. Not sure what took them so long, but better late than never.

6) Boston College 87, Florida State 82— Sometimes you lose a game and it comes with a hangover; Seminoles lost at home to Duke by a hoop, then went on road and lost at both Pitt and Boston College. FSU was 12-1 vs non-conference schedule #113, but is 1-4 in the ACC.

Speaking of which……..

5) Monmouth 83, Iona 81— Hawks are 5-2 in the MAAC, after going 1-12 in pre-conference games; Iona is 4-2 in the MAAC, after going 2-9 in pre-conference games.

In other words, the MAAC sucks this year.

4) Very interesting conversation during the Kansas-West Virginia game Saturday, with Fran Fraschilla giving two solid reasons why Canada is producing more and more top college hoop prospects.

a) Vince Carter and the Toronto Raptors inspired a lot of Canadians to enjoy basketball more, hoops has become a bigger part of the culture north of the border.

b) Canada’s more liberal immigration laws have resulted in more people from the Caribbean and Africa winding up in Canada.

3) Timberwolves 116, Suns 114— Minnesota wins on a fadeaway jumper by Derrick Rose with 0:00.6 left; Wolves are being coached by Flip Saunders’ 32-year old son now- they’ve played lot of high-scoring games since he took over from Tom Thibodeau.

2) Basketball player named Isaiah Stewart from Rochester chose Washington over Duke, as Mike Hopkins’ connections to central New York pay off again.

1) Rams opened as a 1-point favorite in the Super Bowl, but professional bettors dumped a lot of money on New England, so now the Patriots are -2 as I type this late Sunday night. The total is 59. Lets hope those pros are wrong with their bets

Old Dominion won 12 of its last 14 games; they’re 4-2 in C-USa, but only 1-5 vs spread; ODU is 3-2 in true road games. Charlotte upset La Tech Saturday; they’re 2-4 in C-USA, turning ball over 23.2% of time in C-USA games. ODU won seven of last eight games with Charlotte, winning three of last four visits here, with wins by 7-5-22 points- they lost here two years ago. Monarchs are 5-9 in last 14 games as a road favorite, 0-2 this year; UNCC is 7-10 in last 17 games as a home underdog, but 3-1 this year. C-USA road favorites are 5-10 vs spread this season.

Maryland won its last seven games, is 7-1 in Big 14, winning last three road games- they lost by 2 at Purdue. Michigan State won its last 11 games; they’ve won/covered all seven conference tilts this season. Spartans are shooting 39.3% on arc in Big 14 play. Maryland lost five of last six games with MSU, losing last two visits to East Lansing, by 9-30 points. Each week until March Madness we'll take a look at how the Top 25 fared from college basketball, but straight up and against the number, while also taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Mississippi (14-3 SU, 15-2 ATS) continues to be a friend to bettors at the window, as all they do is cover. While they did lose this past week to LSU (14-3 SU, 9-7-1 ATS), a team likely poised to join the Top 25, the Rebels are 15-2 against the spread overall, and they haven't failed to cover in back-to-back games since closing out the regular season in 2017-18 on an 0-3 ATS run. As far as the Tigers are concerned, they enter the new week on a 4-0 ATS run, and they have covered six of their past seven overall while covering four of their past five games at home, too. If you like parlays (and, really, who doesn't?), the 'over' has connected in five of the past eight for the Bayou Bengals.

Texas Tech (15-3 SU, 6-11-1 ATS) will fall out of the Top 10 this week following back-to-back setbacks against unranked teams. The Red Raiders are now a dismal 1-6-1 ATS in the past eight outings heading into the new week. They will face two more unranked clubs this week, but Kansas State (14-4 SU, 9-9 ATS) is not an easy place to play, and then the Red Raiders welcome Arkansas (10-7 SU, 7-10 ATS) to town for the Big 12/SEC Challenge next weekend.

Michigan State (16-2 SU, 14-4 ATS) continues to cook right along, covering seven straight games heading into the new week. Defense has been huge for the Spartans, and they rank third in the country in field goal percentage defense (36.7 percent). That's been key in the past three games especially, as the 'under' is 3-0 in the past three, and 4-1-1 in the past six. They have a showdown with Iowa (16-3 SU, 10-9 ATS) looming on the horizon at Breslin Center on Thursday evening. After a one-game card last week, Sparty is on for a rare three-game schedule this week, too.

We had some upheaval among the heavyweights this past week, and there are no longer any unbeaten teams in college basketball, too. Tennessee (16-1 SU, 9-6-1 ATS) is poised to take over the No. 1 spot in one or both polls this week, and they'll wear the target on their back for a little while. Duke (15-2 SU, 10-7 ATS) rebounded with a victory against Virginia (16-1 SU, 14-3 ATS) after an earlier loss in the week to Syracuse (13-5 SU, 10-8 ATS). That takes both the Blue Devils and the Hoos out of the equation for No. 1, although they're very well expected to remain in the Top 5. Michigan (17-1 SU, 9-9 ATS) fumbled away their chance at the top spot when they were upended at Wisconsin (12-6 SU, 9-9 ATS), a team which has been a bit Jekyll and Hyde this season.

It appears Indiana (12-6 SU, 7-10 ATS) will be back out of the Top 25 after a pair of losses this week. Louisville (13-5 SU, 9-7-2 ATS) was on the verge of a Top 25 spot last week after their big road win at North Carolina (14-4 SU, 10-6-2 ATS). After two more wins, they likely dealt themselves into the rankings. While they have ticked off plenty of wins, they're just 3-5-1 ATS over the past nine, failing to cover in consecutive games since a 5-0 ATS run from Nov. 23-Dec. 8. Speaking of the Tar Heels, they bounce back after their shocking loss to the Cards, and have posted a solid 6-3-1 ATS mark over the past 10 outings.

Buffalo (16-1 SU, 9-6-1 ATS) is showing no signs of letting up. Sure, they're going to be talked about in a negative light because of a perceived weak schedule. And they did get walloped 103-85 at Marquette (16-3 SU, 12-7 ATS) in a game on Dec. 21 when they squared off against their last ranked opponent. However, they do have a nice 12-point win before that in Syracuse, a team which took down Duke. This team also won at West Virginia (9-9 SU, 6-11-1 ATS) earlier this season, too. Ask Kansas (15-3 SU, 8-10 ATS) how easy it is to win in Morgantown, as the Jayhawks just found out the hard way over the weekend. Anyway, don't write off the Bulls as untested or overrated.

Michigan State uses balanced offense to beat Maryland

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Cassius Winston and Kenny Goins scored 14 points each to help No. 6 Michigan State beat No. 13 Maryland 69-55 Monday night with balanced offense and stifling defense.

The Spartans (17-2, 8-0 Big Ten) have won 12 straight this season to take sole possession of first in the conference. They have won 20 consecutive Big Ten regular season games dating to last year.

The Terrapins (16-4, 7-2) had a shot to move into first place in the conference, but couldn't extend their seven-game winning streak.

Maryland's leading scorer, Anthony Cowan, was held to a season-low seven points.

The Terrapins connected on just 34 percent of their shots against the Spartans after shooting 58 percent of in their previous game, a 14-point win at Ohio State.

No. 9 KANSAS 80, No. 24 IOWA STATE 76

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Dedric Lawson had 29 points and 15 rebounds, Devon Dotson hit the clinching free throws with 5.9 seconds left and Kansas held on to beat Iowa State.

Marcus Garrett added 16 points and Lagerald Vick had 14 for the Jayhawks (16-3, 5-2 Big 12), who blew a late lead at West Virginia over the weekend but this time slammed the door down the stretch.

Iowa State (14-5, 4-3) got within 72-71 on a driving layup by Marial Shayok with 1:44 to go, but Garrett followed a swap of empty possessions with a layup. Michael Jacobson hit a free throw for the Cyclones, but Lawson's 3 from the top of the key made it 77-72 with 22.3 seconds left.

Shayok added the last of his team-high 26 points for Iowa State, and after Dotson made the second of two free throws, Tyrese Haliburton made two of his own to get within 78-76 with 7.5 seconds left.

Dotson was immediately fouled on the inbound and this time he made both of his free throws.

No. 11 NORTH CAROLINA 103, No. 10 VIRGINIA TECH 82

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Coby White scored 27 points and North Carolina knocked down a season-high 16 3-pointers to beat Virginia Tech.

Fellow rookie Nassir Little added a season-high 23 points for the Tar Heels (15-4, 5-1 Atlantic Coast Conference), who struggled out of the gate to fall behind by nine while making just 1 of their first 12 3s.

But it wasn't long before just about everything started falling from behind the arc, an avalanche that sparked a game-turning 20-0 run that pushed UNC to a 45-31 lead by halftime.

UNC made 15 of its last 22 3-pointers, finished the game shooting 54 percent and led by as many as 27 points.

Ahmed Hill scored 20 points for the Hokies (15-3, 4-2), who made 6 of 7 3-pointers in a fast start only to end the half by going nearly 6 minutes without a basket.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

13) Football players are really tough; Saints’ OT Andrus Peat played the last two weeks with a broken hand that he had operated on during the Saints’ bye week two weeks ago. Imagine a guy having to block Aaron Donald all day with a broken hand? Can’t be much fun.

12) One of the best parts of Super Bowl week is when the Westgate SuperBook puts out its prop bets for the game- last year, it was a 42-page PDF document. You can get into a lot of trouble with a document that is filled with 42 pages of wagering opportunities.

11) There are rumors that former Seahawks’ QB Jon Kitna will become the QB coach for the Cowboys; right now, he is offensive coordinator for the San Diego Fleet of the new AAF, where his boss is former Rams’ coach Mike Martz.

The AAF starts play on February 9, the Saturday after the Super Bowl.

10) Cincinnati Reds got P’s Sonny Gray, Reiver Sanmartin from Bronx in exchange for IF Shed Long and the Reds’ 2019 Competitive Balance Round A draft pick. Gray signed a contract thru the 2022 season; Gray will enjoy not facing the DH, but Cincinnati does have a small ballpark- over last five years, it ranks #11 out of 30 major league fields as a hitters’ ballpark.

9) This is a good time to remind everyone that for whatever reason, Patriots’ owner Robert Kraft once met Vladimir Putin; during the meeting, as the story goes, Kraft takes off his Super Bowl ring and shows it to Putin, who stuck the ring in his pocket and walked away.

That ring is still in Russia; Kraft appealed to the Obama administration, but was told to let it go. Why would Kraft be meeting Putin in the first place?

8) NFL announced their international games for next season:

7) Danny the Glover checked in to let us know that this is the first time the same two cities have been opponents in the World Series/Super Bowl in same season since 1969, when Mets-Orioles met in the World Series, and Jets-Colts played in the Super Bowl.

6) How bad do you have to be in order to be a home underdog to the Chicago Bulls? Bulls came into Monday’s game on a 9-game losing streak, but beat Cleveland 104-88 as a 2-point road favorite. It was the first time the Bulls were favored anywhere since November 21.

5) NBA math; Houston Rockets are trading Carmelo Anthony (actually, his contract) and cash to Chicago but he’ll never play for the Bulls. Chicago will release him and he’ll be a free agent, if/when he clears waivers.

4) I’ll say this about NFL officiating: Seems like there are lot fewer penalties called in playoff games than during the regular season- they should call fewer penalties all the time.

3) Watching the Australian Open tennis tournament, they have a camera in the net at Rod Laver Arena, which gives them some cool replays. Kind of like the camera in the pylon by the goal line at football games, whoever decided that was a good idea deserves a raise.

2) From Mike Teevan: Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 baseball draft; Jared Goff’s dad Jerry was a major league catcher for six years; he played 55 games for the Expos, in 1990, 92.

1) Adam Long is a 31-year old golf journeyman who was making only his 6th PGA Tour start when he won the Desert Classic this past weekend, beating Phil Mickelson, Adam Hadwin by a stroke.

Getting your first PGA Tour win is a life-changing event; Long won $1,062,000 and now has a two-year exemption on the Tour. Huge day in his career.

Week of January 21st

Well, last week's piece may have brought the kibosh to the advantage home teams have had in the Conference Championship of the NFL playoffs, and also killed the bad run that teams of 40-point performances were on.

Both road teams moved on to the Super Bowl in a wild, wacky, and controversial Conference Championship Sunday, and New England managed to wiggle away from the bad results teams had after scoring 40+. It gives us a very interesting Super Bowl in which the storyline narratives will be aplenty over the next 14 days (and quite possibly nauseating), so I've got no problem taking some time to step away from the sport and to take a look at a couple of “blue bloods” from the college basketball landscape.

'Unders' in ACC play involving North Carolina – 4-1 to the 'under' in ACC action; 1-7 O/U run overall

North Carolina is a program that's always going to play fast and look to score in the 80's every time out there under Roy Williams, and that's exactly what we saw from them to start the year. The Tar Heels opened up the season with an 'under' result at Wofford, but followed that up with seven straight 'overs' cashing and went 8-for-9 in terms of 'overs' up until basically the Christmas break. It was there that an 'under' hit in their showdown with Kentucky, and ever since then, this team has been an 'under' machine.

That 'under' vs Kentucky sparked a seven-game span of 'under' tickets cashing for UNC, a run that included their first three conference games of the season. An 'over' finally got there in their road win against Miami over the weekend, but that still only got there by three points, and needed UNC to shoot 55% from the floor (45% from distance), and give up 49% shooting to Miami.

It appears as though this strong 'under' run for the Tar Heels has come about as a combination of teams understanding how to defend UNC better with more film on them, and numbers still being a touch too high. Granted, a lot of those early season 'overs' cashed when UNC totals closed in the high 150's, a range they've consistently fallen in lately as well, but familiarity breeds contempt. And these ACC coaches are out there looking to try and slow the pace down from the get-go against UNC.

Roy Williams understands that this is what the opposition is looking to do and has turned around and demanded better defense from his own guys, and for the most part they've responded. During that run of seven consecutive 'overs' early in the year, the Tar Heels were allowing an average of 75.28 points per game – largely against weaker competition than they'll see in conference play – and during their recent run of seven straight 'unders' that points per game allowed number dropped to 70.14.

There is still room for significant improvement as seemingly every upper echelon team they've faced (Michigan, Gonzaga, Kentucky, NC State) has scored 80 or more against them, and with a game tonight against a sweet stroking team like Virginia Tech, the Tar Heels defense, and them being a solid 'under' bet will be tested.

Who's Not

'Unders' in ACC play involving Duke – 3-1-1 O/U in ACC action

For all the national hype Duke got from the outset this year, their exorbitant amount of offensive talent was accounted for, and over-accounted for in the betting markets.

Duke entered the new calendar year, and conference play at the same time, with a 2-9-1 O/U record overall, as this team would either win in such convincing fashion that the offense would shut down in the final 10 minutes, or the totals were inflated so high that the numbers were hard to go 'over' regardless.

Bettors probably also underestimated just how good Tre Jones was defensively, as he's been what makes the Duke defense so effective at times. Throw in the idea that Duke is still a team loaded with freshman, and that shooting struggles with efficiency would pop up from time to time, Duke 'under' results for the first two months of the year tended to bring a windfall of gains to the books.

But we've seen those results flip since 2019 and ACC action arrived, as Duke's 3-1-1 O/U record has really come without much of a sweat. The lone 'under' landed there by just four points, and Wake Forest didn't exactly help by shooting just 33% on their own floor that day. But 'over' benefits – many of whom likely got off that train for Duke games after so many 'unders' the first two months by this team – have had a easy go of it so far in 2019 Duke games.

The Blue Devils were just the second team to score 65 or more against Virginia this year, and now thanks to numbers being consistently lower than they were to begin the year – Duke's totals closed at an average of 162 for the 2018 calendar year, and are averaging 149.5 in 2019 – backing 'unders' in Blue Devils games just haven't been the way to go. Everyone expected that Duke/Virginia game to be one that stayed low as that number opened at 140 before closing at 136, but it still failed to deliver on that result.

Looking ahead at Duke's schedule for the next few weeks, you'll see that we will likely get a few Duke blowouts in there – they play Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, St Johns, and Boston College before a rematch with Virginia – and maybe that's what brings back those 'under' results for the Blue Devils.

Blowouts mean Coach K will sit on the ball in the 2nd half, and now that these 'overs' have been cashing, we may see Duke totals start to creep higher again either with the opening or via market moves. That could be a good sign for those bettors that will be lowing to go 'low' again in Duke games, but keep an eye on the Tre Jones injury status as well. Without his pressure on the ball, Duke's defense can be sieve-like at times, and them knowing how good they can be offensively, going with the mindset of just scoring at will to run away and hide.

Auburn is 1-2 in true road games, with only win at Texas A&M. South Carolina is 4-1 in SEC, but lost by 27 at LSU Saturday; Auburn lost three of last four games with South Carolina, losing last two visits to Columbia, by 29-9 points. Under Pearl, Auburn is 6-3 as road favorites, 1-1 this year; Gamecocks are 3-5 in their last eight games as a home underdog, 1-0 this year. SEC road favorites are 7-3 so far this season.

Mississippi State is 14-3 vs schedule #36; they’re 2-1 in true road games, with loss in OT at South Carolina. Bulldogs are #9 in country in minutes continuity. Kentucky won its last four games, winning home games by 11-9 points. Wildcats won their last 11 games with MSU, winning last five meetings here, by 6-30-22-6-13 points. Under Howland, Miss State is 12-13-1 as an SEC road underdog; Kentucky is 17-12 in its last 29 games as a home favorite, but 0-2 this year. Texas Tech led by 15 at half, held off Kansas State 63-57 at home in first meeting Jan 5; Red Raiders won five of last six series games, but LY’s win in Manhattan was their first in last nine visits to the Little Apple. Wildcats won their last four games, allowing 60.5 ppg- they were held to 47-57 points in their two Big X losses. Tech lost its last two games after a 15-1 start, scoring 64-62 points. K-State is 10-8-1 in last 19 games as a home favorite, 1-2 this year; under Beard, Tech is 5-7 as a road underdog. Big X home favorites of 5 or fewer points are 2-8 vs spread.

Notre Dame is off to a 1-4 start in ACC, wth only win by 3 at home over BC; Irish are 0-3 in true road games, losing by 3-15-6 points. Georgia Tech lost three of its last four games, losing last two home games, to Va Tech/Louisville. Home side won nine of ten ND-Tech ACC games; Irish are 1-4 vs Tech in Atlanta, losing last three visits here by 1-2-7 points. Last three years, Irish are 12-10 in last 22 ACC road games, 1-1 this year; Tech is 14-7 vs spread in its last 21 ACC home games, 2-1 this year. ACC road teams are 5-1 vs spread in games with spread of 3 or less.

Wichita State (-29) crushed South Florida 95-57 in their first AAC meeting LY. Shockers lost five of last six games, are 1-4 in AAC, losing road games at Memphis/Houston, by 11-9 points. USF lost four of its last five games; they’re 2-1 at home in AAC tilts, with only loss by 9 to Houston. Bulls are turning ball over 24.2% of time in conference games. Over last six years, Shockers are 2-1 as a conference road underdog. Wichita is last seven years, USF is 3-12 as an AAC home favorite, 1-0 this year. AAC home favorites of less than five points are 3-1 vs spread.

Longtime Duke aide Capel is Pitt’s new coach. Duke is 15-2 after beating Virginia Saturday; their last two wins were both by a hoop- they’re 2-0 in true road games, winning by 22-2. Pitt starts out 2-3 in ACC, with losses by 25-6-11 points; Panthers are shooting only 43.8% inside arc, 31.7% outside arc in ACC games. Blue Devils are 4-1 vs Pitt in ACC play, winning by 15 in only visit here. Last seven yeas, Duke is 17-24 as an ACC road favorite; Panthers are 2-1 as a home underdog this season. ACC double digit favorites are 5-9 vs spread, 2-0 on road.

Indiana won four of its last five games with Northwestern, with favorites covering four of those. Hoosiers lost their last two visits to Evanston by 7-13 points. Hoosiers lost their last four games after a 12-2 start; they’re 1-5 in true road games, with only win by hoop at Penn St. Wildcats are 2-5 in Big 14, with wins by 2 over Penn St, 8 over Rutgers. Big 14 teams are shooting 55.8% inside arc against Northwestern. Under Miller, Indiana is 5-7-1 vs spread on Big 14 road, 2-2 this year; Wildcats are 5-8 vs spread in last 13 home games, 1-2 this season.

Ole Miss won 11 of its last 12 games; they’re 3-1 in true road games, with SEC road wins by 10 at Vandy, 4 at Miss State. Alabama lost three of its last four games; their last two losses were by total of four points. Ole Miss won four of last six games with Alabama, but Rebels lost four of last five visits to Tuscaloosa. UNLV won 80-68 in the Pit January 8, ending a 3-game skid against the Lobos; New Mexico beat Rebels by 3-4 points in last two series games in Las Vegas. Lobos lost three of last four games, giving up 91-97 points in losing last two road tilts. Rebels are 4-1 in MW, 3-0 at home, with wins by 2-12-38 points. Lobos are 6-8 in last 14 games as a road underdog, 0-1 this year; under Menzies, UNLV is 2-8 as a home favorite, 1-2 this year.
