    • Guy's free throws help No. 4 Virginia hold off Notre Dame
      February 16, 2019
      By The Associated Press

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) PJ Washington scored 23 points, Keldon Johnson added 19 and No. 5 Kentucky upset No. 1 Tennessee 86-69 Saturday night to end the Volunteers' 19-game winning streak.

The Wildcats used a 25-7 surge over a little more than seven minutes for a 62-38 lead, providing a cushion that withstood the Volunteers' 13-0 spurt soon after that cut the advantage in half. Kentucky maintained a double-digit lead to win the highly anticipated matchup of top-five schools.

Kentucky (21-4, 10-2) also avoided a second consecutive SEC loss to stay within reach of co-leader Tennessee (23-2, 11-1), which hadn't lost since Nov. 23 to No. 2 Kansas.

NO. 2 DUKE 94, NORTH CAROLINA STATE 78

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - RJ Barrett had Duke's first triple-double in 13 years, finishing with 23 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the Blue Devils' victory.

Zion Williamson scored 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting and Tre Jones added 13 to help the Blue Devils (23-2, 11-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their ninth straight.

Barrett became the fourth Duke player with a triple-double and the first since Shelden Williams in January 2006. He completed it in the final minute, hitting Williamson for a layup that put Duke up 90-74.

Markell Johnson had 16 points and 10 assists for the Wolfpack (18-8, 6-7), who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

      NO. 3 GONZAGA 79, SAN DIEGO 67

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rui Hachimura scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and had 10 rebounds and Gonzaga pulled away in the second half for its 16th straight victory.

Zach Norvell Jr. added 18 points, Josh Perkins 15 and Brandon Clarke 14 for the Bulldogs (25-2, 12-0 West Coast). The nation's highest scoring team, Gonzaga had only 30 points in the first half but then scored 31 points in the first 9:59 of the second half to take control.

Gonzaga shot 69 percent (20 of 29) in the second half to finish at 58.2 percent (32 of 55).

Olin Carter III scored 20 points for San Diego (16-11, 5-7).

      NO. 4 VIRGINIA 60, NOTRE DAME 54

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - Kyle Guy scored 22 points, De'Andre Hunter had 20 with 10 rebounds and Virginia withstood a late push by Notre Dame.

Hunter scored six points during a 9-0 run for the Cavaliers (22-2, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) after the Fighting Irish closed to within 45-44 with 8:12 left.

      T.J. Gibbs scored 17 and D.J. Harvey had 10 for Notre Dame (13-12, 3-9).

Notre Dame got within 54-52 in the final minute after Virginia went scoreless for more than four minutes. But Guy made four free throws to seal it.

      NO. 6 MICHIGAN 65, NO. 24 MARYLAND 52

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift Michigan over Maryland.

The Wolverines (23-3, 12-3 Big Ten) rebounded from their loss at Penn State earlier in the week. Michigan raced out to a 14-2 advantage and led by as much as 15 in the first half.

Bruno Fernando scored all 12 of his points in the second half for the Terrapins (19-7, 10-5).

      NO. 7 NEVADA 82, WYOMING 49

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - Trey Porter scored 14 points, Jordan Caroline and Caleb Martin added 13 apiece, and Nevada easily beat Wyoming for its 10th straight win.

Jazz Johnson contributed 12 points and Tre'Shawn Thurman had 11 points and 12 rebounds for Nevada (24-1, 11-1 Mountain West). The Wolf Pack shot 54.4 percent from the field

Nevada avenged its loss last season at Laramie, when Wyoming defeated the then-No. 23 ranked Wolf Pack 104-103 in two overtimes.

Justin James led Wyoming (6-19, 2-10) with 16 points, followed by TJ Taylor with 13.

NO. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 95, WAKE FOREST 57

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and North Carolina scored the game's first 18 points en route to its biggest-ever margin of victory in an Atlantic Coast Conference road game.

Freshman Coby White added 10 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Tar Heels (20-5, 10-2), who dominated from the tip following their first loss in a month.

Freshman Jaylen Hoard scored 17 points in an ugly afternoon for the Demon Deacons (9-15, 2-10), who suffered their most lopsided loss in three decades at Joel Coliseum.

      NO. 12 PURDUE 76, PENN STATE 64

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - Carsen Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half and Matt Haarms added a career-high 18 for Purdue.

The Boilermakers (18-7, 11-3 Big Ten) reclaimed a share of the conference lead with their ninth win in 10 games.

Lamar Stevens finished with 18 points and Rasir Bolton had 17 for Penn State (9-16, 2-12). The Nittany Lions have lost have 10 of 12.

      NO. 14 KANSAS 78, WEST VIRGINIA 53

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) - Devon Dotson and K.J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and Kansas beat depleted West Virginia.

Dedric Lawson, K.J.'s brother, had 14 points for the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), who won their third straight as they continue to start four freshmen.

Lamont West and Chase Harler scored 11 points apiece for West Virginia (10-15, 2-10), which struggled without former starters Esa Ahmed and Wesley Harris, who were dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating athletic department policies.

      NO. 15 TEXAS TECH 86, BAYLOR 61

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as Texas Tech cruised past short-handed and turnover-prone Baylor.

Jared Butler scored 16 points and Mario Kegler added 15 for the Bears (16-9, 7-5 Big 12), who were without key backcourt players Makai Mason (foot) and King McClure (knee) for the third consecutive game.

Texas Tech (21-6, 9-4 Big 12) stayed in second place in the conference by using an uncharacteristic hot hand from 3-point range to surge into a first-half lead that was never threatened.

      NO. 16 LOUISVILLE 56, CLEMSON 55

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Christen Cunningham scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to rally Louisville, which hung on in the final seconds.

The Cardinals (18-8, 9-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 56-49 with 17 seconds left after a free throw by Steven Enoch but then nearly lost a third straight in disastrous fashion. Marcquise Reed hit two 3-pionters that cut the deficit to one, but Louisville survived.

Elijah Thomas led the Tigers (15-10, 5-7) with 15 points. Reed had 13 points and 12 rebounds.

NO. 17 FLORIDA STATE 69, GEORGIA TECH 47

ATLANTA (AP) - Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as Florida State tied a school record with its seventh straight Atlantic Coast Conference win.

Freshman Devin Vassell came off the bench to score a team-high 11 while playing in his hometown for the Seminoles (20-5, 8-4).

Georgia Tech (11-15, 3-10) lost its seventh straight ACC game with another offensive struggle. Jose Alvarado led the Yellow Jackets with 17 points.

      NO. 19 LSU 83, GEORGIA 79

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Tremont Waters scored 20 points, Ja'vonte Smart added 19 and LSU won its fourth straight game.

The Tigers (21-4, 11-1 Southeastern Conference) are off to their best start in league play since the 1981 Final Four team was 11-0. They never trailed after Smart's 3-pointer midway through the second half, but Georgia (10-15, 1-11) stayed close and didn't allow LSU to lead by more than eight the rest of the way.

NO. 23 IOWA STATE 78, NO. 18 KANSAS STATE 64

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) - Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and Iowa State pulled away late to tighten up the Big 12 title race.

Marial Shayok added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (19-6, 8-4), who pulled within a game of the Wildcats (19-6, 9-3) with six games to go in the conference schedule.

Barry Brown had 23 points for the Wildcats, but he didn't get a whole lot of help. The rest of the team was a combined 2 of 13 from the 3-point arc and 11 of 34 from the field.

      NO. 21 IOWA 71, RUTGERS 69

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Joe Wieskamp banked in a 3-pointer from the corner with less than a second to play and Iowa posted a miraculous victory over Rutgers for its fourth straight win.

The Scarlet Knights appeared on the verge of their second upset of a ranked team this season when Gio Baker got a friendly role on a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 3.3 seconds to play to put Rutgers (12-13, 5-10 Big Ten) ahead 69-68.

After Iowa (20-5, 9-5) called a timeout, Connor McCaffrey threw a length of the court pass that Rutgers' Eugene Omoruyi deflected. The ball went to Wieskamp in the corner next to the Hawkeyes' bench and his off-balance, high-arching shot hit off the backboard and went in the basket, setting off a wild celebration on the Iowa bench.

      NO. 22 VIRGINIA TECH 70, PITTSBURGH 64

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Kerry Blackshear Jr. scored a season-high 29 points, Ahmed Hill added 14 and Virginia Tech held off slumping Pittsburgh.

The 6-foot-10, 250-pound Blackshear overwhelmed the undersized Panthers, making his first six field goal attempts on his way to a nearly flawless performance.

The Hokies (20-5, 9-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won two straight following a two-game losing streak.

Xavier Johnson led Pitt (12-14, 2-11) with 18 points.

          *****************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

          13) 12-2pm:
          — Louisville 56, Clemson 55— Cardinals came damn close to blowing a 7-point lead in last 0:15 of the game; they had to block a 5-footer with 0:02 left to preserve the win.
          — North Carolina 95, Wake Forest 57— Tar Heels led this game, 32-7. Oy.
          — Georgia 64, Vanderbilt 53— Bryce Drew is a good coach, but Vandy is 0-12 in the SEC.

          12) 2-4pm:
          — Minnesota 84, Indiana 63— On Jan 5, Hoosiers were 12-3; now, they’re 13-12.
          — Virginia 60, Notre Dame 54— Red flag for the Cavaliers; they easily could’ve lost this.
          — Fordham 66, Rhode Island 63, OT— URI lost five of last six games, after an 11-7 start.

          11) 4-6pm:
          — Iowa State 78, Kansas State 64— Wildcats lost big guy Dean Wade with an ankle injury.
          — Texas State 67, Ark-Little Rock 60— Bobcats lead Sun Belt by a game over Georgia State.
          — VCU 69, Dayton 68— Rams led by 22 early in 2nd half, needed layup with 0:06 left for the win.

          10) 6-8pm:
          — South Dakota State 78, North Dakota State 77— Jackrabbits banked in a 40-footer at the buzzer for the win.
          — Temple 70, South Florida 69, OT— Owls improve to 18-7, 8-4 in the AAC.
          — Iowa 71. Rutgers 69— Hawkeyes banked in a 3-ball from the corner (hard to do) with 0:00.2 left for the road win.

          9) 8-10 pm:
          — Kentucky 86, Tennessee 69— Wildcats scored first 14 points of the second half.
          — Mississippi State 77, Arkansas 67— Bulldogs suspended Nick Weatherspoon, then got a solid road win. Go figure.
          — Washington 72, Washington State 70— Coogs led by 14 at one point, didn’t play well in last 3:00, but they’re getting better.

          8) 10pm-midnight
          — Oregon State 72, Oregon 57— Beavers sweep Civil War for first time in nine years.
          — Gonzaga 79, San Diego 67— Bulldogs won their 30th consecutive WCC road game.
          — Stanford 104, UCLA 80— Game was delayed for a while by a broken rim, with score 49-40; Bruins seemed disinterested when game resumed.

          7) Upsets of the Day
          — Fordham (+10) 66, Rhode Island 63
          — NC-Wilmington (+10) 87, Hofstra 79
          — UAB (+7) 68, Western Kentucky 60
          — SE Missouri State (+7) 88, Eastern Illinois 79
          — Xavier (+6) 75, Providence 61
          — Oklahoma (+5.5) 71, TCU 62
          — Western Michigan (+5.5) 84, Miami OH 79, OT

          6) Have to stay away from wagering on Baylor games, because of Makai Mason’s health issues; he is a damn good player, but his feet are so brittle that he missed two of their last three games, after playing in only one game the last two years. With Mason in the lineup, Baylor can beat anyone; without him and without a couple other injured Bears, not so much.

          5) If I had Bryce Harper or Manny Machado on my fantasy team, I’d be very annoyed right about now; make a decision already!!! Doubt the offers are going to get any higher at this point.

Also has to be screwing around with betting totals in Las Vegas on props regarding home runs over/unders and team wins over/unders, not to mention just fouling up the players’ actual preparation for the season. This is abnormal.

          4) 5-foot-9 Chris Clemons of the Campbell Camels went over 3,000 career points Saturday, which is really hard to do. He is only the 9th D-I player ever to score 3,000 points.

If you want to scoff at Clemons, the Big South and the Camels, keep in mind that they played at Georgetown November 24, and Clemons scored 45 points, going 9-19 on the arc, in a 93-85 loss to the Hoyas. Campbell is 15-11 this season, 8-4 in the Big South.

          3) When Alabama’s football team starts practice this spring, they’ll have seven new assistant coaches, which is very unusual. There were murmurs last season that Alabama’s staff was the weakest they had in the Nick Saban era; 7 of LY’s 10 assistants have moved on.

          2) Nevada 82, Wyoming 49— Wolf Pack is thought to be the first D-I team ever where all five starters transferred into that school. Five 5th-year starters for Eric Musselman.

          1) Wild year in the MAAC; with five games left in regular season, Canisius leads by a half-game at 9-4; three teams have five losses, two more have six. Highest-ranked team in the league is Rider, which is 8-6 in the league but is ranked only #216 (out of 353) by KenPom.

            David Schwab

Sunday’s top betting action in college basketball is all over the map coast to coast. Getting things started in the Big Ten is an early afternoon Midwest showdown between Ohio State and No. 11 Michigan State.

Moving to the East Coast in a late-afternoon tip in the Big East, No. 13 Villanova will be on the road against St. Johns. Closing out Sunday’s action on the West Coast, Arizona squares off against Colorado in a Pac-12 tilt in Boulder.

Ohio State Buckeyes at No. 11 Michigan State Spartans (CBS, 1:00 p.m. ET)

            Opening Odds:
            Michigan State -12, Total 137 ½

            Betting Matchup

The Buckeyes slipped back under .500 in Big Ten play at 6-7 straight-up with Thursday’s 63-56 loss to Illinois as eight-point home favorites. This snapped a SU three-game winning streak that included a big road win against Indiana as 2 ½-point underdogs last Sunday.

Ohio State is 16-8 SU overall with a 10-14 record against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of its last 10 games. Sophomore forward Kaleb Wesson leads the Buckeyes in scoring with 14.5 points per game.

Michigan State is tied with Michigan at the top of the conference standings at 11-3 as part of a SU record of 20-5. Following a three-game skid both SU and ATS, the Spartans have won their last two outings including a big 67-59 road win against Wisconsin on Tuesday as two-point favorites.

The total has stayed UNDER in eight of their last 10 games. Cassius Winston had the hot hand against the Badgers on Tuesday with 23 points. The junior guard leads the team with 18.8 PPG.

            Betting Trends

-- The Buckeyes are 6-15 ATS in their last 21 games against a team with a SU winning record. The total has stayed UNDER in their last five road games.

-- The Spartans have gone 15-3 ATS in their last 18 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of their last six games at home.

-- Michigan State won the first meeting this season 86-77 as a two-point road favorite with the total going OVER 146 ½ points. The Spartans are 8-2 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

No. 13 Villanova Wildcats at St. John’s Red Storm (FOX Sports 1, 5:00 p.m. ET)

            Opening Odds:
            Villanova -1 ½, Total 145 ½

            Betting Matchup

The Wildcats are 11-1 SU in Big East play with a tenuous one-game lead over Marquette for the regular season title. They bounced back from a tight one-point road loss to the Golden Eagles last Saturday with Wednesday’s 85-67 romp over Providence as 10 ½-point favorites at home.

Villanova (20-5 SU, 17-8 ATS) has covered the closing number in eight of its last nine games. Eric Paschall scored 25 points in Wednesday’s win and senior guard Phil Booth added 22 points as the Wildcats’ leading scorer (18.5 PPG) this season.

St. Johns was on the wrong end of a 76-71 loss to Villanova in early January, but it covered the 6 ½ points on the road. Tuesday’s 77-73 home win in overtime against Butler ended as a PUSH. The total went OVER 146 points in that win after staying UNDER in seven of the Red Storm’s previous nine contests. They are 18-7 SU overall with a 10-13-2 record ATS. This includes a 5-8-1 mark ATS at home.

Mustapha Heron put up a season-high 28 points on Tuesday night with junior guard Shamorie Ponds (20.5 PPG) adding 14 points to the winning effort.

            Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats have a 6-1 record ATS in their last seven games following an ATS win and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five Sunday games.

-- The Red Storm are 1-3-1 ATS in their last five games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five games overall.

-- The underdog in this matchup has covered the spread in four of the last five meetings with the total going OVER in three of the last five games between the two.

Arizona Wildcats at Colorado Buffaloes (ESPNU, 8:00 p.m. ET)

            Opening Odds:
            Colorado -4 ½, Total 141

            Betting Matchup

The Wildcats’ current SU losing streak reached six games with Thursday’s 83-76 setback against Utah as 3 ½-point road underdogs. They have failed to cover in all six of those defeats.

Arizona started Pac-12 play this season with a 64-56 loss to Colorado as a 6 ½-point home favorite and it has been a struggle ever since at 5-7 SU in the conference standings. The Wildcats are 3-4-1 ATS on the road and 1-6-1 ATS closing as underdogs.

Colorado extended its current winning streak both SU and ATS to four games by beating Arizona State 77-73 on Wednesday as a slight 1 ½-point favorite at home. The Buffaloes improved to an even 6-6 (SU and ATS) in conference play.

They are 15-9 SU on the year with an even 12-12 record ATS. Colorado is 9-2 SU and 7-4 ATS at home. Sophomore McKinley Wright IV has led the way in scoring this season with 13.5 PPG and he has combined for 44 points in his last two starts.

            Betting Trends

-- The Wildcats are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games against a team with a SU winning record at home. The total has gone OVER in six of their last seven road games.

-- The Buffaloes have gone 12-4 ATS in their last 16 home games against a team with a SU losing record on the road. The total has stayed UNDER in 14 of their last 20 games following a SU win.

-- The home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER in the last four meetings in Colorado.
