              **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday

Cardinals 20, Packers 17—14-point underdog Arizona ended lot of Survivor pools with this win; they also ended Mike McCarthy’s tenure as Packers’ coach- he was fired before the 4:00 games ended. Green Bay missed a 49-yard FG at the gun, as Packers lost for 5th time in last six games. This was the Cardinals’ first win in Wisconsin since 1949- they had lost their last eight visits there.

Green Bay has only one offensive TD in 2nd half of their last three games. Right now, the Packers would draft after Cleveland; who would’ve expected that this summer? Will be very interested to see who this team hires as their next head coach.

Giants 30, Bears 27 OT— An unusual game:
              — Chicago gifted the Giants with a defensive TD 0:38 into the game.
              — Bears scored a TD, with a defensive lineman carrying the ball.
              — Giants ended the first half by making a 57-yard FG.
              — Giants took the lead when a WR threw a 49-yard TD pass.
              — Bears were down 10 with 1:30 left, but kicked a FG, recovered an onside kick, then tied the game on a pass by a RB at the gun.
              — Giants won in OT; they’ve won three of their last four games.
              — Seven of last nine Chicago games, last four New Jersey games went over total.

Jaguars 6, Colts 0— Second NFL game this season without a TD scored; other one was also a Jaguar home game (9-6 win over Titans). There was another game with no offensive TD’s scored (Jets-Dolphins) but there was a defensive TD in that game.

Loss snaps a 5-game Indy win streak, 7-game Jacksonville losing skid; Jaguar QB Kessler gets first win as an NFL starter (1-8) after losing all this starts for Cleveland in ’16.

Buccaneers 24, Panthers 17— Carolina loses its 4th game in row; they have one takeaway in those four games. Newton threw four INTs in this game. Panthers are 1-5 on road this year, and they were down 17-0 in third quarter of that game. Carolina is still only game out of second Wild Card spot, if Redskins lose Monday night.

First time in 10 years this season series was split; Buccaneers had 14-yard edge in field position. Bucs have only one giveaway in last two games, after 27 in previous nine games.

Rams 30, Lions 16— Aaron Donald is freakin’ awesome; for second game in row, his strip/sack created an LA TD that put them in commanding position. Rams scored 30 points but watching the game, I felt like Detroit has a good defense; two of Rams’ three TD drives started in Detroit territory. LA beat spread for only second time in last eight games, running ball for 149 yards.

First time since 1979 Rams won NFC West in consecutive seasons. Five of last six Detroit games stayed under the total; Lions had ball in red zone five times, scored only one TD, three FG’s- very hard to beat the Rams scoring only one TD. Rams are now 9-2-1 vs spread in their last 12 post-bye games.

Ravens 26, Falcons 16— Whats happened to Atlanta’s offense? They gained total of only 131 yards in this game, throwing for only 97. Falcons lost last four games, scoring 16-19-17-16 points- their longest play in this game was 17 yards.

Both teams scored one offensive TD and each team scored a defensive TD.

At this point, Baltimore is the #6 seed in the AFC; Lamar Jackson is now 3-0 as an NFL starter; will Joe Flacco get traded this winter?

Texans 29, Browns 13— Houston won its last nine games after starting season 0-3; they’re 17-10-1 vs spread in last 28 games as a home favorite, and covered five of last six tilts overall.

Cleveland turned ball over four times (-4), after having four giveaways total in their previous five games. Since ’15, Cleveland is 10-19-1 as road underdogs, 2-3-1 this year. Browns outgained Houston in this game while running 22 fewer plays (74-52), but when you’re -4 in turnovers, you lose just about all the time.

Dolphins 21, Bills 17— Buffalo outgained Dolphins 415-175 but lost; they turned ball over three times (-2). Miami is 4-0 when it allows 20 or fewer points, 1-6 when they allow more. Dolphins are still struggling on 3rd down; they’ve converted just 17 of last 63 3rd down plays.

Dolphins are 5-1 at home this season; last two years, Fish are 3-0-2 as home favorites, 2-0-1 this season. Buffalo ran ball for 212-167-198 yards in its last three games. Under is 3-0-1 in Miami’s last four games.

Broncos 24, Bengals 10— I’m told that quarterback is an important position, and it doesn’t look like Cincinnati has one, with Andy Dalton injured. Denver ran ball for 218 yards, had 10-yard edge in field position, sending Bengals to sixth loss in their last seven games. Last four years, Broncos are 9-4-1 as road favorites, 2-0 this year. Last five Denver games stayed under total.

              • Monday's Tip Sheet
                David Schwab

The Big Ten’s unique scheduling allows for five days of conference play in early December ahead of the shift to a full season of conference play after the first of the year. Two of the matchups on the slate for Monday night start with No. 14 Iowa on the road against No. 9 Michigan State. Later Monday night, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights will go on the road to square off against No. 22 Wisconsin.

In earlier Big Ten play this Saturday, the 6-2 Indiana Hoosiers squeezed out a two-point 68-66 victory against 6-2 Northwestern as seven-point home favorites to hand the Wildcats their first straight-up loss of the season. The No. 24 Maryland Terrapins covered as 6 ½-point home favorites in a 66-59 win against the 4-3 Penn State Nittany Lions to move to 7-1 on the year.

In the biggest matchup of the day in the Big Ten, the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines covered as six-point favorites at home with a solid 76-57 victory against the No. 19 Purdue Boilermakers. Michigan remains perfect on the year at 8-0 and Purdue dropped to 5-3.

No. 14 Iowa Hawkeyes at No. 9 Michigan State Spartans (FOX Sports 1, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Michigan State -10, 158

                Betting Matchup

The Hawkeyes opened Big Ten play on Friday with a 72-66 loss at home to Wisconsin as two-point underdogs. This was their first SU loss of the season against six previous wins. Iowa is just 2-5 against the spread in its first seven games with the total staying UNDER in four of those contests. This includes Friday’s loss on a closing line of 141 ½ points. Three starters scored in double figures against the Badgers led by junior forward Tyler Cook’s 19 points.

Michigan State got a strong effort from junior guard Cassius Winston (22 points) and junior forward Nick Ward (20 points) in Friday night’s 78-67 road victory against Rutgers as an eight-point favorite. This followed a 82-78 loss to Louisville on Nov. 27 as a five-point road favorite. The Spartans are 6-2 SU with a 5-3 record ATS. The total went OVER in each of their last two contests after staying UNDER in their previous four games.

                Betting Trends

-- The Hawkeyes have failed to cover in four of their last five games coming off a SU loss and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of their last five games on the road.

-- The Spartans are 5-11-2 ATS in their last 18 games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in four of their last five home games.

-- Head-to-head, Michigan State is 8-2 SU in its last 10 games against Iowa, but the Hawkeyes have a 3-1 edge ATS in the last four meetings. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six games between the two.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights at No. 22 Wisconsin Badgers (BTN, 8 p.m. ET)

                Opening Odds: Wisconsin -13, 125

                Betting Matchup

Prior to Friday’s loss to Michigan State, the Scarlet Knights had won five of their first six games SU with a 4-2 record ATS. Their biggest win came against the ACC’s Miami Hurricanes on Nov. 28 in a 57-54 victory as 11-point road underdogs. The total went OVER 134 points in Friday’s game after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in Rutgers’ previous four contests. Junior forward Eugene Omoruyi is the team’s leading scorer with 15.1 points a game while also pulling down a team-high 9.1 rebounds a game. He has posted two double-doubles in his last three games.

Wisconsin improved to 7-1 SU with the win against Iowa. Earlier in November, the Badgers beat Xavier 77-68 as two-point underdogs in the only game this season they were not favored to win. They are 5-3 ATS overall with the total going OVER in five of the eight games. Sophomore guard D’Mitrik Trice had the hot hand for Wisconsin on Friday night with 20 points while going 6-for-14 from the field. He has now eclipsed his team-high 17.4-point scoring average in three of his last four games.

                Betting Trends

                          **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                          13) Eagles 28, Redskins 13— Washington lost another QB; McCoy broke his leg, leaving Mark Sanchez as the #1 guy. Now they have to sign another QB to back Sanchez up. Adrian Peterson had a 90-yard TD run in this game, but ran for only 98 yards on nine carries.

With this result, Minnesota moves up to the #6 spot in NFC playoff race.

Eagles are 6-6, and can tie for first place in NFC East with win at Dallas Sunday.

                          12) With 14:10 left, Eagles led 14-13, scored a TD, then WENT FOR TWO, a genius move; if you make it, you’re two scores ahead. If you don’t make it, it you’re still up seven points and the other team will probably kick the PAT if they score a TD.

This was first time I can remember an NFL team doing this; Minnesota Gophers tried it 4-5 years ago, but didn’t score the two points.

                          11) Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder retired over the weekend; 79-year old Snyder coached K-State for 27 years, orchestrating one of the greatest rebuilding jobs in college football history— the Wildcats were TERRIBLE when he took over, but under Snyder, Kansas State had a 215-117-1 record, playing in 19 bowls in Snyder’s 27 seasons.

Administrators at K-State were considering dropping football down to I-AA before hiring Snyder, thats how pathetic their program was, but Father Time is unbeaten- Snyder was diagnosed with throat cancer three years ago, and now at age 79, has decided to step down, or it was decided for him. What a great career he had.

                          10) In the USA Today coaches’ poll for the top 25 college football teams, only two coaches didn’t vote for Alabama #1; Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi and Alabama’s Nick Saban.

With the playoff in place, Saban can now use that a motivational tool with his team. Poll itself doesn’t mean a damn thing.

                          9) 76ers are 9-2 since acquiring Jimmy Butler from Minnesota; Timberwolves are 8-3 since they made the trade, the rare case of a trade helping both teams.

                          8) Georgia didn’t make the college football playoff, but according to Las Vegas oddsmakers, they would be favored on a neutral field over Oklahoma, Ohio State and Notre Dame.

                          7) In 1983-84, Wayne Gretzky scored 13 unassisted goals; in the 35 years since then, no one else has scored more than 10 (Teemu Selanne, Rick Nash) in one season.

                          6) Lot of changes in the coaching profession:
                          — Chicago Bulls fired Fred Hoiberg, who figures to resurface in college ball.
                          — Louisville hired Appalachian State coach Scott Satterfield.
                          — UMass hired Florida State’s OC Walt Bell as its new coach.
                          — Auburn fired OC Chip Lindsey, who will probably join Les Miles at Kansas.
                          — Carolina Panthers fired two defensive assistants Monday; Panthers lost their last four games, are 6-6 and still have to play the Saints twice.

                          5) Wichita State has a basketball player named Ricky Torres who is a fascinating story; the kid dropped out of high school, got his GED later on and wound up going to a junior college at a school called Missouri State-West Plains- he scored 17.2 ppg for a 25-9 team, and caught the attention of Wichita coaches, with Shockers graduating lot of players last spring.

                          4) Seattle Mariners are taking their team apart; they traded Robinson Cano/Edwin Diaz to the Mets for Jay Bruce, Anthony Swarzak and three prospects, then traded Juan Segura, James Pazos and Juan Nicasio to the Phillies for Carlos Santana and JP Crawford.

Most analysts think the Mariners will trade Santana somewhere else, seeing how he is over 30 and makes $20M a year.

                          3) Couple of Big 14 conference games last night:
                          — Michigan State 90, Iowa 68— Hawkeyes are already 0-2 in conference.
                          — Wisconsin 69, Rutgers 64— Both home teams won, only Spartans covered.

                          2) Couple of big-name schools lost to low D-I teams in college basketball last night:
                          — Niagara 71, Pittsburgh 70
                          — Vermont 72, George Mason 67— Catamounts were a road favorite

                          1) In 1993, Dennis Rodman played in an NBA game where he grabbed 28 rebounds but didn’t score any points. That doesn’t seem possible, but it happened.

                          • Tuesday's Tip Sheet
                            David Schwab

The Big Ten has started the tradition of playing a week of conference games early in the month of December. This unique twist in scheduling gives college basketball bettors their first glimpse of conference play ahead of the actual conference schedule that starts up right after the New Year’s holiday.

Tuesday night’s conference lineup features a pair of matchups on the Big Ten Network starting with the Indiana Hoosiers’ road game against Penn State. Later Tuesday night, the No. 7 Michigan Wolverines will be on the road against the Northwestern Wildcats.

Sunday was the third day of early conference play in the Big Ten and the Nebraska Cornhuskers were able to win their seventh game in eight outings straight-up with a 75-60 home victory against 2-6 Illinois as 13-point favorites.

Later that day in a battle of teams that came in with just one SU loss, the 7-1 Ohio State Buckeyes beat 6-2 Minnesota 79-59 as 8 ½-point favorites at home. The total ended as a PUSH in that game on a closing line of 138.

Indiana Hoosiers at Penn State Nittany Lions (Big Ten Network, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Penn State -2 ½, Total 136

                            Betting Matchup

Indiana got things started in the Big Ten on Saturday with a tight 68-66 home victory against Northwestern as a seven-point favorite. This followed a 90-69 loss to Duke on Nov. 27 as a heavy 15-point underdog. The Hoosiers are 6-2 SU with a shaky 3-5 record ATS after failing to cover in each of their last five games. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in four of their last five contests. Indiana is averaging 80.4 points per game while allowing an average of 64.8 points a game on defense. One question mark for Tuesday could be forward Juwan Morgan.

The Nittany Lions made a splash in last week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge by knocking off then-No. 13 Virginia Tech 63-62 as five-point home favorites. They opened play in the conference with a tough 65-59 loss to Maryland on Saturday as 6 ½-point road underdogs. Penn State is 4-3 SU with a 3-4 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 142 points in Saturday’s loss and it has now stayed UNDER in Penn State’s last six games on a scoring average of 69.7 PPG.

                            Betting Trends

-- The Hoosiers have gone 12-5 ATS in their last 17 Big Ten games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in 13 of their last 16 road games.

-- The Lions are 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games against the conference and the total has stayed UNDER in 25 of their last 35 games played at home.

-- Head-to-head, the home teams has a 3-0-1 edge ATS and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last 10 meetings in Penn State.

No. 7 Michigan Wolverines at Northwestern Wildcats (Big Ten Network, 9:00 p.m. ET)

                            Opening Odds: Michigan -6 ½, Total 129

                            Betting Matchup

Michigan’s hot start has them rapidly climbing the ranks in both national polls. After embarrassing North Carolina 84-67 as a 3 ½-point home favorite in last week’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge, it opened conference play with a solid 76-57 victory against the ranked Purdue Boilermakers as six-point favorites at home on Saturday. The Wolverines are a perfect 8-0 straight-up with a 5-3 record against the spread. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their first eight games.

Northwestern’s only loss this season heading into conference play was a 78-59 setback against Fresno State on Nov. 22 as a 6 ½-point favorite. The Wildcats doubled their SU loss total on Saturday when they came up short against Indiana. They are 6-2 SU overall with a 5-3 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of the eight games. Four different players scored in double figures in Saturday’s loss led by senior forward Vic Law. The senior forward leads the team in scoring with 17.6 points per game.

                            Betting Trends

-- The Wolverines have covered in eight of their last nine road games against a team with a SU winning record at home and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of their last eight Big Ten games.

-- The Wildcats are 2-5 ATS in their last seven Tuesday games and the total has gone OVER in five of their last seven home games.

-- The home team in this matchup has covered in five of the last six meetings and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of the last nine games between the two.

                            • Hot & Not Report

                              Week of December 3rd

The college basketball regular season is about a month old now, and while top individual teams tend to generate the bulk of the headlines (Duke, anyone?), from a betting market perspective there are two specific conferences that have performed very distinctly against the spread.

                              Who's Hot

West Coast Conference – Eight of 10 teams are .500 or better ATS; combined 44-30-2 ATS

The West Coast Conference is most notably for housing the current #1 team in the Gonzaga Bulldogs, and the 'Zags 7-1 ATS mark leads the way for the conference. But when six of the other nine teams are above the .500 mark against the spread – including Pepperdine's 5-1 ATS mark and San Francisco's 4-1-2 ATS record – we might be at a point where the entire conference as a whole is rather underrated in the eyes of many. Gonzaga may be the program that leads the entire ship of the WCC, but the rest of the teams in this conference are certainly capable of pulling their own weight.

Of the two WCC teams with a losing ATS record, one is BYU (3-6 ATS) and they tend to find there way to the top of the conference standings when all is said and done. BYU and St Mary's (5-3 ATS) are typically the biggest competition for Gonzaga in the WCC, so it will be interesting to see if that changes as the year goes on. The fact that nine of the 10 teams in the conference have a .500 record or better in terms of outright wins, suggests that for as talented as Gonzaga is as the #1 team – that's still missing arguably their best player in Killian Tillie – the rest of the conference shouldn't be slept on at all.

There is still about another month of action for these 10 programs before they start to go to war with one another the rest of the way, so don't be scared to hunt out some value with these WCC teams over the next few weeks.

                              Who's Not

SEC Conference – Four of 14 teams are below .500 ATS; combined 40-53-3 ATS overall

The reputation of being a “football” conference seems plenty true for the SEC through the first month of the basketball season, as they might be a conference that's a little overranked from top to bottom. In terms of outright wins and losses they are very good – as only Texas A &M has a losing outright record – but maybe all of that winning has led to plenty of inflation in the numbers these teams are trying to cover.

A 40-53-3 ATS record overall isn't extremely bad, but when only 28% of the entire conference has a winning record against the number, things start to gain some perspective. And if it weren't for Auburn (5-0-1 ATS), Arkansas (5-1 ATS), and Mississippi (6-1 ATS) leading the way, things would look a hell of a lot worse. Take the ATS records of those three teams out of it, and the rest of the conference is a disastrous 24-51-1 ATS.

Like the WCC headlined by Gonzaga, the SEC in basketball is always going to be headlined by Kentucky, and the Wildcats 3-5 ATS record isn't all that bad considering they were blasted by Duke to start the year. But when you've got teams like LSU, Alabama, and South Carolina a combined 15-7 SU and just 4-17-1 ATS, it's likely that the oddsmakers have given the depth of this conference way too much respect. These schools may turn into great bets as underdogs when SEC begins in earnest, but the majority of them are laying big numbers on a nightly basis in this first month and not coming close to cashing.
