Top-ranked Zags missing 2 players

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Top-ranked Gonzaga is heading into a tough stretch without two of its key players.

Star forward Killian Tillie and guard Geno Crandall are sidelined for at least the next month with injuries suffered in practice.

That leaves the Zags short-handed as they prepare to face No. 6 Tennessee, No. 11 North Carolina, Creighton and Washington in the next two weeks. Only the Washington game next Wednesday is at home.

''Those are four tough games,'' Gonzaga coach Mark Few said.

Tillie, an NBA prospect who is a big scorer and rebounder, injured his ankle a month ago in practice and has yet to play. He's forecast to return in about a month. The Bulldogs (7-0) have weathered the loss of Tillie because they are deep in the front court.

Crandall, a graduate transfer from North Dakota, was expected to provide needed depth at point guard. But he fractured his shooting hand in practice last Sunday, and expects to miss the next four to six weeks. Crandall was already playing catch-up at Gonzaga after arriving on campus late because he needed to fulfill graduation requirements at North Dakota.

''I'm disappointed for him,'' Few said. ''He fought so hard to get here.''

Crandall's injury puts more pressure on starting point guard Josh Perkins, who is likely to play a lot of minutes in close games. Perkins played 38 minutes in the victory over Duke last week in Maui that propelled Gonzaga to the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press Top 25. Perkins, a fifth-year senior, is averaging 11 points and eight assists per game.

''He's done a really good job of getting us in the right spot, making the right decisions and playing with great pace,'' Few said.

Shooting guards Zach Norvell Jr. and Corey Kispert can provide some help to Perkins. Forwards Rui Hachimura and Brandon Clarke are also capable of grabbing rebounds and bringing the ball down the court if needed.

''Losing Geno, that hurts us,'' Clarke said. ''We have to have other guys step up.''

One way the Zags expect to cope without Tillie and Crandall is to hit more 3-pointers. They sank 15 in a 102-60 blowout of North Dakota State on Monday, after making 10 against Duke.

''It's big-time for us when we're able to make 3s,'' Norvell said. ''It stretches the defense.''

This is the third time in program history that the Zags have been ranked No. 1, and by far the earliest in a season for such a lofty perch.

Few, who has the highest winning percentage of any active coach at .819 (535-118), said it is too early to get excited.

''I'm not a big poll guy,'' Few said. ''We are still in November.''

But he added that he was honored by the ranking. ''I appreciate that people think so highly of us,'' Few said.

While December might seem early to focus on big games, Gonzaga does play in the lightly regarded West Coast Conference.

To build their national reputation, the Zags historically play a brutal nonconference schedule, then coast through a league that they win nearly every season. Now is when they build their resume for a high NCAA Tournament seed.

Not that the Zags are looking ahead to March.

''We're up for a really big challenge on Saturday,'' Few said of Creighton, which is receiving votes in the Top 25. ''They are tough to prepare for. They will have our full attention.''

13) Cowboys 13, Saints 10— You think handicapping is bleeping easy? Try this score on for size; Dallas didn’t score in the second half, but pulled a very big upset, their 4th win in a row.

Dallas had six defensive/special teams penalties, in the third quarter alone. Their defense played their hearts out, just a great game. New Orleans was averaging 37 points a game, and then this happened.

As 13-10 games go, this one was fascinating.

12) Some other stuff about this game:
— Saints had 59 total yards in first half, their least since 2002.
— Saints didn’t score in first half for first time in their last 72 games.
— For the game, Saints ran only 49 plays for 176 yards.
— New Orleans had scored 30+ points in eight of its last nine games. Go figure.

11) NFL used to have two different facemark penalties, 5-yard and 15-yard penalties for degree of the foul. Wish they would go back to that; someone just touching the facemask shouldn’t merit a 15-yard penalty.

10) An enterprising human wagered $36,000 on the Toronto Raptors Thursday, to beat Golden State— if the Raptors won, the guy banked $9,000.

Today is November 30; if you told me back on September 30 that someone would wager $36K on the Warriors to lose a basketball game, I’d tell that person to get a psych evaluation, but in the world of sports, things change quickly.

Toronto won in OT; to paraphrase a Latin proverb, “Fortune favors the bold”

9) Things you learn when you watch too much TV:

One of several hundred reasons why I’m no longer married: If you buy the Mrs a Jaguar SUV for Christmas, she’ll smile and be happy. Who knew? Never tried that one.

8) Mets hired Chili Davis as their new hitting coach; this will be the third different job in three years for Davis, his 4th in last six years. Mets have had three batting coaches the last three years, and five in last six years.

Davis had really good success in Oakland when Yoenis Cespedes was there, so……..

7) Boston Red Sox doled out 66 full World Series, worth $416,837.72 each, to players, coaches staff from this past season. Players vote on who gets full/partial/no playoff shares.

The minimum salary in the major leagues is $545,000, so for rookies and also coaches, this is significant money.

6) Texas Tech hired Utah State coach Matt Wells to run its football program; Wells went 44-34 at Utah State (his alma mater) including a 10-2 record so far this year. He is bringing both his coordinators with him from Utah State.

5) There are 353 Division I college basketball teams; 33 of those teams are being coached this season by a person who has never coached a Division I team before.

According to college hoop expert Ken Pomeroy, rookie coaches went 331-478 LY, 412-602 the year before, are 77-127 so far this year, with 27 of those wins vs non-D-I teams. You didn’t get hired as a rookie coach because the last coach did well.

4) I complained about ESPN’s Jay Bilas during the Maui Classic, but he sounds like Vin Scully compared to Dan Dakich, one of the most annoying people to ever speak into a microphone.

Dakich played/coached at Indiana, was a mediocre head coach at Bowling Green for 10 years, and now comes across like a freakin’ know-it-all on TV a few days a week. Maybe he’s a terrific guy off camera, but no voice makes me reach for the mute button faster than Dakich’s.

3) Chargers’ offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt will interview for the coaching job at his alma mater Georgia Tech, after Paul Johnson retired earlier this week.

2) Clippers 133, Kings 121— Sacramento had 68 points at halftime……and was behind. This was a fun game to watch. Clippers are an actual team, with no one big star- they’ve won 11 of their last 13 games.

1) One of my favorite players to watch in the NBA is Montrezl Harrell, who in his 4th season in the NBA, is averaging 15.9 ppg for the first-place Clippers.

Why do I like watching him play? Because he works really hard; he scored 5.7 ppg as a freshman at Louisville, improved to where scored 15.7 ppg as a junior. You see guys progress to become an outstanding player, and you know the work thats gone into it behind the scenes.

Radford shocks No. 17 Texas 62-59

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Carlik Jones made a spinning layup and a free throw with 24.5 seconds left, sending Radford to a 62-59 upset of No. 17 Texas on Friday night.

Devin Hutchison made one of two free throws with 11 seconds left before Texas' Jase Febres missed a 3-pointer to tie and Radford rebounded to end the game.

It was the second big road win for Radford (6-1), which beat Notre Dame earlier this season.

Texas dropped a crushing loss. The Longhorns came in with their highest ranking in four seasons under coach Shaka Smart, but shot just 35 percent at home.

Ed Polite Jr. scored 11 to lead Radford. Jericho Sims scored 16 for the Longhorns (5-2).

No. 9 MICHIGAN STATE 78, RUTGERS 69

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Cassius Winston scored 22 points and Nick Ward had 20 points to lead Michigan State past Rutgers in the Big Ten opener.

After a back-and-forth first half, where Rutgers led much of the first 10 minutes, Winston hit a 3-pointer to give Michigan State (5-2) the 39-37 lead over Rutgers (5-2) at the break.

Rutgers would open the second half with a 3-pointer by Peter Kiss from the top of the arc to retake the lead, but a quick 6-0 run from Michigan State caused Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell to call timeout down 45-40 with 17:54 to go. The deficit would eventually balloon to 13.

Eugene Omoruyi led Rutgers with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 22 WISCONSIN 72, No. 14 IOWA 66

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - D'Mitrik Trice scored 20 points, including a crucial 3 with 20 seconds left, and Wisconsin held off Iowa in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

Ethan Happ had 13 points, seven boards and five assists for the Badgers (7-1), who handed the resurgent Hawkeyes their first loss of the season.

With the Badgers up 65-63, Trice - who led the nation at 60 percent on 3s entering play - hit his 3-pointer.

Jordan Bohannon answered with a quick 3 for Iowa (6-1), but Wisconsin was able to seal it at the line.

No. 21 BUFFALO 96, MILWAUKEE 77

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) - Jeremy Harris scored 21 points, Nick Perkins added 20 with nine rebounds, and Buffalo beat Milwaukee in the Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic.

CJ Massinburg added 16 points as the Bulls improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 1930-31 season.

Buffalo advanced to Saturday's championship game in the Goliath bracket where they will meet San Francisco (7-0), a 76-58 winner over Stephen F. Austin.

No. 25 MISSISSIPPI STATE 65, DAYTON 58

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) - Nick Weatherspoon hit a pair of 3-pointers in the closing minutes, and Mississippi State trailed most of the game before rallying to a victory over Dayton.

The Bulldogs (6-1) salvaged their first true road game by hitting late 3s after missing 15 of their first 19 tries from behind the arc. Weatherspoon's 3-pointer from the corner with 27 seconds left put the Bulldogs up 61-55. He finished with 14 points.

Quinndary Weatherspoon led Mississippi State with 21 points and 12 rebounds, two shy of his career high.

Ryan Mikesell scored 15 points for Dayton (4-3).
