Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……

13) Few weeks ago, I asked you, the reader, to submit your favorite Christmas songs; I figured four or five songs would get all the mentions. Not so much.

33 different songs got at least one vote, including a few I’ve never heard of, which is fine. Took a while for a few songs to jump to the head of the class.

12) First of all, a surprising number of people dislike Christmas songs, some intensely so.

Devin, a new mom who I figured would like Christmas: “Christmas music makes me want to slam my head into a door.” Alrighty then.

Diverse opinions are part of what makes our country fun; we all like different stuff.

11) Silent Night won our poll, not surprising. Traditional song, but it was close.

10) Baby Its Cold Outside finished 2nd; the Vanessa Williams version got a couple special mentions. I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus also got a lot of support, as did The Little Drummer Boy.

You’re a Mean One, Mr Grinch was mentioned by people trying to ingratiate themselves with me, because they know of my fondness for the Grinch.

9) My personal favorite? All I want for Christmas Is You, the Mariah Carey version.

8) Monday night, Christian McCaffrey became the first player with 50 yards rushing, receiving and passing in same game since Walter Payton in 1985.

7) Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera grew up on five different military bases in three different countries; his father was in the army.

6) If Georgia backup QB Justin Fields transfers as expected, that would mean over the last nine years, 10 of the 18 HS quarterbacks ranked #1-2 in their senior class wound up transferring in college, and one of those kids transferred twice!!

5) Spent five hours on an airplane Tuesday, five feet in front of a child who enjoyed yelling very loudly; great fun. Then an older woman passed out on the plane a few minutes before we landed here in Las Vegas- she was OK, just a little dehydrated apparently.

4) There were 108 international players on NBA rosters when this season started.

3) In The Natural, Wilford Brimley is the manager and he only seems to have one coach, but both of them are in the dugout when the Knights are batting; who coaches the bases?

2) Tommy Hawk, mascot of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, was attacked by a man on the concourse of the United Center Friday nite. There was a short video of the incident on the Interweb; the mascot more than held his own and actually body slammed his assailant.

1) RIP Penny Marshall 75, a very funny lady who was Laverne in Laverne & Shirley and Myrna Turner in The Odd Couple. She also made movies, including Big and A League of Their Own. She was a big sports fan and had season tickets for the Lakers and Clippers- someone said on Twitter that she has a great sports memorabilia collection.

Auburn needed OT beat regional rival UAB 75-71 Saturday; three Tigers played 34:00+- they outscored Blazers 27-6 on foul line. NC State is 9-1, but vs schedule #349; they lost by 4 at Wisconsin- their best win was 89-78 at Penn State Saturday. Wolfpack is #7 in country, forcing turnovers 24.7% of time- these teams like to do same things. NC State subs more and plays a much faster tempo.

Penn State lost three of its last four games; Nittany Lions are 5-5 vs schedule #23- only one of their five losses was by more than seven points. PSU is 4-1 vs teams ranked outside top 100, with three wins by 11+ points. PSU forces turnovers 21.9% of time (#40) but they can’t shoot- they’re ranked #236 worse behind arc, inside arc and on foul line- not good. Duquesne is 8-2 vs schedule #334; Dukes lost by 11 at Notre Dame in their only top 100 game. Dukes are experience team #348 whose bench plays minutes #8— their best win is over #120 Marshall.

Virginia is 9-0 vs schedule #305; Cavaliers are experience team #221 (#73 in MC) that plays the slowest tempo games in country, forcing turnovers 23.1% of time. Virginia won by 5 at Maryland in their only true road games this season; Cavaliers have four top 100 wins, but none of them were by more than eight points. South Carolina is 4-5 vs schedule #250; they lost road games at Wyoming, Michigan last week, have #247 eFG% while playing tempo #20, faster than in past (#155/#145 last two years). Gamecocks are experience team #225 (#120 in MC).

Cal-Irvine is 10-2 vs schedule #136; Anteaters are experience team #40 that has #28 defensive eFG%- both their losses are to top 100 teams (Toledo (of MAC)/Utah State) Anteaters already have four true road wins, winning at Texas A&M/St Mary’s- they play tempo #312, so playing vs 2-3 zone shouldn’t be an issue. Eastern Michigan is playing its first D-I game in 18 days, first vs anyone in 11 days; Eagles lost last four D-I games, are 2-5 vs schedule #31, with three non-D-I wins. EMU is experience team #54 that is 0-4 vs teams in top 125, losing by 38-27-18-14.

Old Dominion beat Richmond last two years by 19-3 points; Monarchs won last six games after a 2-3 start, are off 68-62 upset win at Syracuse Saturday. ODU is experience team #155 that lost its other true road game by 15 at St Joe’s- they play slow tempo (#321), have #6 defensive eFG% in country- teams shoot 37.7% inside arc against them. Richmond lost five of last seven games, is 4-6 vs schedule #346. Spiders are experience team #309; they lost by 16 to Loyola, Chi in only top 100 game this season. Richmond isn’t shooting 3’s well (31.5%), bad in Princeton system.

Memphis is 5-5 vs schedule #41 after losing 102-92 in regional rivalry game vs Tennessee four days ago; Tigers are experience team #132 that is 4-0 vs teams ranked outside top 100, winning by 15-7-8-18 points- they force turnovers 23.3% of time (#25) but aren’t shooting well behind arc (31.1%, #256). Little Rock lost 70-62 here LY, after leading by 5 with 9:45 left; Trojans are 3-6 vs schedule #326- they’re experience team #323 that is turning ball over 22.3% of time (#315). Little Rock is 0-3 vs teams in top 150, losing by 28-10-6 points.

Cincinnati beat UCLA 78-63 in Pauley Pavilion LY, forcing 18 turnovers (+9); Bearcats are 9-2 vs schedule #188- they lost last game 70-59 at Mississippi State. Cincy split its four top 100 games this season, beating Ole Miss/Xavier, losing at home to Ohio St. Bearcats are #115 experience team that is playing 6th-slowest tempo in country. UCLA split its last six games, losing last game at home to #79 Belmont. Bruins are #349 experience team that is 1-3 vs top 100 teams, with only win over Notre Dame- this is UCLA’s first true road game.

Fresno State won its last five games, is 7-2 vs schedule #147; Bulldogs are experience team #21 (MC #275) that is 5-0 vs teams ranked outside top 100, with three wins by 15+ points. Fresno is forcing turnovers 21% of time (#85); they start three juniors, two seniors- this is their first game in 11 days. California is 4-5 vs schedule #114; Golden Bears are experience team #345 that is 0-4 vs top 100 teams, with three losses by 13+ points- they lost 82-79 at St John’s, their closest top 100 game. Cal’s defensive eFG% is #325; they’re making 40.1% of their 3’s (#16).

Boise State ended game on 34-8 run over last 13:22 in 68-48 win over Loyola Marymount LY, 4th year in row they beat the Lions. Boise is 3-6 vs schedule #198; they’re experience team #98 that is turning ball over 20.1% of time while playing pace 286. Broncos are 0-3 vs teams in top 150, losing by 12-2-12 points. LMU is 10-1 vs schedule #225, with only loss at UCLA; Lions are experience team #161 (#60 in MC) that is playing 7th-slowest tempo in country- they’re trying to play pack-line defense now like Virginia does.

Belmont beat Western Kentucky last four years, by 21-3-1-5 points; Bruins are 8-1 vs schedule #133- they won by 2 at Pauley Pavilion Saturday, a huge win for their program. Belmont starts three freshmen, two seniors- their last three wins were all by 2 points or in OT. Bruins are #281 experience team that has #47 eFG%. WKU lost four of its last six games, with last three decided by 6 or fewer points. Hilltoppers are experience team #331 that is 1-3 in true road games, with losses by 18-9-6 points, but did they win 78-77 at Arkansas.

Mississippi State is 9-1 vs schedule #171; they beat Clemson/Cincinnati in last couple games. Bulldogs are experience team #176, but #10 in MC- they’re making 37.5% of their 3’s, have #57 eFG%. MSU won its last four top 100 games since losing 72-67 to Arizona State on neutral floor last month. Wofford won five of last six games, is 6-3 vs schedule #83; Terriers are experience team #134 (#24 in MC) that shoots 35.9% on the arc- they get 44.9% of their points there (#48 in country). Wofford three losses are all to top 100 teams, losing by 11-11-25 points.

Cal-Santa Barbara beat Omaha two of last three years, beating Mavericks 60-59 in last visit here three years ago; Gauchos are 7-2 vs schedule #327- they were held to 63 points in both their losses this year, to North Dakota State/Washington. UCSB is 3-2 in true road games, winning in to at Rice in last game Saturday. Omaha snapped its 4-game skid with Saturday’s 89-80 win at Idaho; Mavericks are 3-7 vs schedule #43- they’re 0-6 vs teams in top 200, with five losses by 19+ points- their only close top 200 game was a 79-75 loss at Colorado.

Arizona lost its last two games, to Alabama/Baylor; Wildcats are 2-4 in last six games overall, but are 5-0 vs teams ranked outside top 100- they’re 7-4 vs schedule #55, forcing turnovers 21.8% of time (#51). Arizona was held to 49 points in Saturday’s home loss to Baylor. Arizona is #320 in minutes continuity. Montana is 4-3 vs schedule #138; Griz is experience team #11 (#26) that is shooting 57.7% inside arc and has #14 eFG% in country. Montana is 0-2 vs top 100 teams, losing by 26 at Creighton, by 9 at Cal-Irvine- they turn ball over 20.1% of time.

Johnson, Daniels lead NC State past Auburn

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) Markell Johnson had career highs of 27 points and five 3-pointers to help North Carolina State upset No. 7 Auburn 78-71 on Wednesday night.

Devon Daniels scored all 15 of his points after halftime for the Wolfpack (10-1), who led nearly all night before pushing ahead for good in the final 10 minutes.

N.C. State shot 58 percent after halftime behind Johnson and Daniels. Johnson stood out with 19 points after the break, including a run of 10 straight points - a 3-pointer, a four-point play and pullup 3 in transition - during one critical 75-second sequence.

By the time Daniels scored twice followed by Johnson's layup, the Wolfpack had pushed the lead to a dozen near the four-minute mark on the way to another big upset under second-year coach Kevin Keatts.

J'Von McCormick scored 14 points for the Tigers (9-2), who shot 48 percent but committed a season-high 25 turnovers.

NO. 3 TENNESSE 83, SAMFORD 70

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Jordan Bone set career highs with 24 points and 11 assists, and No. 3 Tennessee beat Samford 83-70 for its fifth consecutive victory.

Bone shot 11 of 16 and committed only two turnovers. Admiral Schofield scored 18 points and Grant Williams had 13 of his 16 points after halftime to help the Volunteers (9-1) snap Samford's three-game winning streak. Kyle Alexander added 10 points.

Ruben Guerrero had 16 points and eight rebounds before fouling out for Samford (10-3). Kevion Nolan scored 13 points, Myron Gordon had 12 and Josh Sharkey added 10.

NO. 5 VIRGINIA 69, SOUTH CAROLINA 52

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Ty Jerome had a season-high 25 points and No. 5 Virginia added to its perfect start with a victory over South Carolina.

The Cavaliers improved to 10-0 for the first time since they opened with 19 straight wins on their way to the Atlantic Coast Conference title for the 2014-15 season. They showed off their usual stout defense while sending the Gamecocks (4-6) to their third straight loss - and second in a row to a No. 5 team after falling at then fifth-ranked Michigan on Dec. 8.

Kyle Guy had 18 points for Virginia, and Mamadi Diakite finished with 10. Chris Silva led South Carolina with 11 points.

NO. 11 FLORIDA STATE 95, NORTH FLORIDA 81

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Mfiondu Kabengele scored a career-high 24 points and No. 11 Florida State pulled away for a win against North Florida.

Kabengele made 7 of 12 shots from the floor, 10 of 10 free throws and pulled down seven rebounds as Florida State (10-1) earned its fifth straight victory. Terance Mann had 17 points, including several alley-oop dunks, as the Seminoles dominated inside. They finished with 64 points in the paint.

J.T. Escobar, who played at Maclay School and Florida A&M High in Tallahassee, had 27 points for North Florida (5-8). He went 6 for 6 from 3-point range.

NO. 13 VIRGINIA TECH 82, NORTH CAROLINA A&T 60

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 12 of his 20 points in the second half, and No. 13 Virginia Tech beat North Carolina A&T for its fifth consecutive victory.

The Hokies (10-1) went 15 for 17 at the free-throw line and enjoyed a 42-20 rebounding advantage over the Aggies. Kerry Blackshear Jr. had 17 points and nine rebounds, and Justin Robinson finished with 14 points, seven boards and six assists.

Quavius Copeland scored 16 points for North Carolina A&T (4-7), and Milik Gantz had 14. The Aggies finished with 14 turnovers.

NO. 17 MISSISSIPPI STATE 98, WOFFORD 87

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) - Lamar Peters and Aric Holman each scored 19 points, and No. 17 Mississippi State beat Wofford for its seventh consecutive win.

The Bulldogs (10-1) rallied from a 12-point deficit early in the second half. Quinndary Weatherspoon made 14 of 15 foul shots on his way to 18 points, and Nick Weatherspoon and Reggie Perry each had 12 points for the Bulldogs.

Fletcher Magee scored 24 points for Wofford (9-4), and Cameron Jackson finished with 20. Nathan Hoover had 15 points for the Terriers in their first-ever meeting with Mississippi State.

NO. 22 INDIANA 86, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 53

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Devonte Green scored 19 points, freshman Romeo Langford recorded his second double-double and No. 22 Indiana beat Central Arkansas.

The Hoosiers (10-2) have won five straight, though this was their first victory by more than three points during the streak. They've also won eight straight home games. Langford had 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Hayden Koval had 16 points as the Bears (4-7) lost their fourth game to a power-conference team this season. Central Arkansas, Scottie Pippen's alma mater, is 0-7 against Big Ten teams since joining Division I in 2006-07.

As the non-conference portion of this year’s college basketball season continues to wind down, Thursday’s betting board is highlighted by a neutral-site Big 12/ACC showdown at Madison Square Garden between Texas Tech and Duke.

As a bonus betting preview, the Mountain West’s Utah State Aggies will go on the road to the Fertitta Center to face the AAC’s nationally ranked Houston Cougars.

No. 12 Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. No. 2 Duke Blue Devils (ESPN2, 7:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Duke -7 ½, Total 144 ½

Betting Matchup

With Saturday’s 82-48 romp over Abilene Christian, the Red Raiders ran their straight-up winning streak to 10 games. They covered against the spread as 19-point home favorites after going 0-3 ATS in their previous three games. Texas Tech is an even 5-5 ATS overall with the total staying UNDER in seven of the 10 games. Much of the team’s early success can be attributed to the elevated play of sophomore guard Jarret Culver. With 30 points in his last outing, he is averaging a team-high 19.1 points per game while also leading the team in assists (4.5).

Duke has worked its way back up to No. 2 in the nation with five SU wins (4-1 ATS) since its 89-87 loss to the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Nov. 21 as an eight-point favorite. The Blue Devils finished their recent three-game tour against the Ivy League with an average of 92 points a game. They are 10-1 SU overall with a 7-4 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in Duke’s last five games after going OVER 168 ½-points against the Bulldogs. Freshman forward RJ Barrett is averaging 24.5 PPG and he has eclipsed that number in each of his last four starts.

Betting Matchup

Earlier losses to Arizona State and BYU are the Aggies’ only two SU setbacks so far against nine wins. They failed to cover on Dec. 8 in a nine-point victory against Weber State as 11 ½-point favorites as part of an 8-3 record ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five games. Utah State is averaging 84.0 PPG while holding opposing teams to 66.0 points at the other end of court. Junior guard Sam Merrill is averaging 20.2 PPG and shooting 51.1 percent from the floor.

The Cougars will be putting their perfect 10-0 SU start on the line after squeezing out a 68-64 victory against St. Louis on Sunday. Closing as eight-point home favorites, this was the first time they failed to cover in their last five games. Houston is 6-3-1 ATS overall and the total has stayed UNDER in six of its last eight contests. Three of five starters ended Sunday’s game in double figures led by senior guard Corey Davis Jr’s team-high 17 points. Houston shot 44 percent from the field to basically mirror its field goal percentage on the year (44.9).
