      • James scores 36, Lakers end 5-game skid by beating Bulls
        March 12, 2019
        By The Associated Press

CHICAGO (AP) LeBron James had 36 points and 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers overcame a 20-point deficit to beat the Chicago Bulls 123-107 on Tuesday night and end a five-game losing streak.

James played 33 minutes and showed no signs of letting up with the Lakers barely hanging on in the playoff race. He took over after the Lakers' 14-point lead was cut to four with 8:38 left, making a jumper and then on the next possession going through the lane for a thunderous dunk.

James didn't stop there, hitting a 3-pointer over 7-footer Robin Lopez and capping it off when Josh Hart passed the ball off the backboard to James, who finished with a reverse dunk to put the Lakers up 115-101 with 5 minutes remaining.

Kyle Kuzma added 21 points after missing two games with an ankle injury. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 24 points off the bench for the Lakers, who outscored the Bulls 43-24 in the third quarter.

Lopez had 20 points and seven rebounds, and Otto Porter Jr. finished with 19 for the Bulls.

        BUCKS 130, PELICANS 113

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Giannis Antetokounmpo scored 24 points and Milwaukee used a 45-point third quarter to pull away from New Orleans.

Khris Middleton had 23 points, Malcolm Brogdon added 18, and Eric Bledsoe and former Pelicans forward Nikola Mirotic each scored 14 for the Bucks. Brook Lopez finished with 13.

Elfrid Payton had his second consecutive triple-double for the Pelicans, finishing with 14 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and 11 assists. He is the first New Orleans player to have a triple-double in consecutive games since Chris Paul in 2008.

Julius Randle scored 23 points and Anthony Davis had 21 points and 12 rebounds.

        76ERS 106, CAVALIERS 99

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Ben Simmons scored 26 points, Joel Embiid had 19 rebounds and made some big plays down the stretch, and Philadelphia held off Cleveland.

Collin Sexton led the Cavaliers with 26 points, including a layup with 3:10 left that pulled Cleveland within one. Cedi Osman added 18 and put the Cavs ahead 97-96 with under 3 minutes to go as boos rained down in Philly.

But Mike Scott responded with a 3-pointer to put the 76ers back ahead. And after Simmons made a free throw and Jordan Clarkson a layup for Cleveland, Embiid followed his own miss with a thunderous dunk to give the Sixers a 102-99 lead with under a minute left.

Embiid, playing in his second game after missing eight straight with a sore left knee, had a block on the other end and then made four straight free throws to seal the win as ''MVP! MVP!'' chants replaced the boos.

        SPURS 112, MAVERICKS 105

DALLAS (AP) - DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points, LaMarcus Aldridge added 28 and San Antonio beat Dallas.

DeRozan and Aldridge had identical 11-for-19 shooting lines from the field and combined to go 17 of 17 from the foul line. The Spurs led from the middle of the first quarter on in winning their sixth in a row. Dallas lost its sixth straight and 11th in 12 games.

Derrick White added 23 points and seven assists for San Antonio.

Jalen Brunson scored a career-high 34 points for the Mavericks and Dwight Powell added 20.

        PACERS 103, KNICKS 98

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Bojan Bogdanovic scored 24 points and Darren Collison made two free throws 19.5 seconds left to help Indiana slip past New York.

Indiana snapped its two-game losing streak and remained tied with Philadelphia for the No. 3 spot in the Eastern Conference. Collison finished with 16 points.

New York lost its seventh straight despite getting 21 points from Emmanuel Mudiay and 18 from Damyean Dotson. The Knicks also have lost six straight in the series.

            Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

            13) Giants traded Odell Beckham Jr to Cleveland last night; I’m guessing Odell might not enjoy December by Lake Erie, but while the Ravens/Steelers lose players this month and the Bengals pretty much stand still. are the Browns a playoff contender now?

Giants got Jabril Peppers, plus draft picks in 1st and 3rd rounds.

            12) Are there any other honest people left? Parents paying off people so their kids can go to fancy colleges. Oy. Just send the kid to a damn state college and tell him/her to study.

Jerome Allen is an assistant coach with the Celtics; he used to work at Penn, and admitted to taking $300K to designate a kid as a basketball recruit at Penn, so the kid could get into an Ivy League school.

The three smartest (whether book smart or street smart) people I know went to these colleges, and I’m posting the colleges in alphabetical order, not in order of how smart those people are:

            Albany, Northeastern, St Francis NY

Not a lot of “elite” colleges on that list. Smart people come from all kinds of schools.

USC’s senior associate athletic director, Donna Heinel, apparently received more than $1.3M in bribe payments to fabricate athletic credentials for prospective students.

Tremendous. Just awesome. Ms Heinel has already been fired, by the way.

            11) Monday at the MGM in Las Vegas, a courageous soul made a $310,000 money-line bet on the Raptors (-$420) to win in Cleveland; they lost by 25. Had Toronto won, the bettor would’ve banked a little over $73,800. Tough way to start the week.

            10) At the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas, Detroit Lions dropped from 100-1 to 60-1 to win the Super Bowl, after their four free agent signings.

            9) Teddy Bridgewater is taking less money to be the Saints’ backup QB, instead of being the starter with the Dolphins? What does that say about Miami?

            8) Monday night in LA, Lou Williams of the Clippers set the NBA’s all-time record for most points scored off the bench, passing Dell Curry. Williams has scored 13,037 points in the NBA, but has started only 11.8% of his 923 career games.

Remember seeing Williams play in an AAU tournament in Orlando back when he was in high school; if I remember right, he played for the Atlanta Celtics’ AAU team- they were excellent.

            7) Bradley’s path to winning the MVC tournament:
            — beat Missouri State by 3; trailed by 7 early in 2nd half.
            — beat Loyola, Chi by 2; trailed by 4 with 12:11 left.
            — beat Northern Iowa by 3; trailed by 18 with 17:07 left.

            6) Texas PG Kerwin Roach will play for the Longhorns in the Big 12 tournament this week, so whatever offense he committed to get suspended for the last five games is forgiven.

Ohio State’s Kaleb Wesson will also be back for the Big 14 tournament; he was suspended for the last three games.

Funny how conference tournaments make suspensions go away.

            5) Five years ago, Mercer won the Atlantic Sun tourney, then beat Duke in the first round of the NCAA’s, before losing to Tennessee in the 2nd round. Mercer beat Duke as a 14-seed. In the last 20 years, #14-seeds are 8-72 in the first round of the NCAA tournament- Mercer’s win was a very big deal.

The next year, Mercer moved up to the Southern Conference and in five years since then, Bears went 83-83, 46-46 in conference games. Thats a .500 record in a better league, but Monday, they fired coach Bob Hoffman, the same guy who coached the team when they beat Duke.

Who made this decision? This isn’t UCLA or some other big-money school that expects to make the tournament every year to appease its big-money boosters. It is freakin’ Mercer. If you’re Mercer and the guy beats Duke, you give him a 10-year contract and pray he doesn’t bolt your school for green$r pa$ture$.

            4) If you care about such things, you can wager on next year’s Super Bowl right now; AFC is favored by 2.5 points, with a total of 57.

            3) Oakland Grizzlies basketball coach Greg Kampe played football in college at Bowling Green, graduating in 1978— one of his coaches was Don Nehlen, who went on to an excellent career coaching West Virginia. Kampe was a cornerback, who also kicked/punted.

            2) Chris Woodward is the new manager of the Texas Rangers; he went on live TV for a half-inning with the Rangers’ TV guys during an exhibition game the other night and he was great. Best one of those interviews I’ve seen. He talked about how a lot of players don’t know all the rules, and how the bench coach for the Dodgers (Bob Geren) “….is obsessed with rules.” Was interesting to listen to.

            1) A’s play Seattle over in Japan in games that count, starting at 5:30am here in New York on both March 20th and 21st; the NCAA tournament starts at noon on the 21st. When the hell am I supposed to sleep?

            • Preview: Warriors (45-21) at Rockets (42-25)
              Date: March 13, 2019 9:30 PM EDT

In the aftermath of a ninth consecutive win, this one over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday, Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni allowed himself a moment of reflection, several minutes to acknowledge just how far Houston has come in advance of another showdown tilt.

The Rockets will host the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday at Toyota Center, seeking an improbable sweep of the four-game season series. Of equal significance is the opportunity Houston would gain with a win: The Rockets would close to within three games in the loss column of the two-time defending champs for the top overall seed in the Western Conference.

Houston is 31-11 since an early-season swoon left them three games under .500 a week into December. The Rockets rode MVP-level play from the reigning MVP, James Harden, in rebounding from their early doldrums, and have of late relied on their depth to close the gap on the Warriors. Three months ago, none of this seemed probable, something D'Antoni noted.

"With all the stuff we've gone through, all the ups and downs, starting from 11-14, we're in a good spot and we still have a chance to legitimately make a run for the first spot," D'Antoni said. "That's pretty good in any year, in any scenario, even if we were healthy all year."

That the Rockets aren't solely relying on Harden is important. During his 32-game stretch of consecutive 30-point performances, Harden averaged 41.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.4 assists. He has been, relatively speaking, only moderately exceptional during the win streak with averages of 34 points, 5.5 rebounds and 6.1 assists. Buoyed by a deep veteran cast, Harden sees a team far more potent than the one he was forced to carry through injury and attrition.

"We know our system, guys know their roles now," Harden said. "Defensively, as long as we can lock in for four quarters and hold opponents under what they average and offensively get our shots, we'll live with the results."

That Golden State has left the door ajar for the Rockets comes as a bit of a surprise. Their 13-2 run just prior to the All-Star Game break allowed the Warriors to grab the top spot in the West, but they are just 4-5 since with two blowout losses plus setbacks against three teams with sub-.500 records (Miami, Orlando, and Sunday against the lowly Phoenix Suns).

The Warriors have shown a tendency to disregard these hiccups and have been routinely blasé following losses to the Rockets. They've been afforded such hubris, for, in the postseason, the results reflect their unmitigated dominance. However, that doesn't mean the Warriors are completely immune to their erratic ways, especially with the Phoenix loss following a big victory over the Denver Nuggets, nestled between the Warriors and Rockets in the standings.

"Frustrated," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said describing his team. "Frustrated with our play, with ourselves, just our approach. So, we all feel it.

"I think the Denver game was a better indicator of what we're capable of, and then to so quickly get off track one game later, that's very frustrating and that's something we've got to correct. We've got to build some momentum; we've got to build better habits. We've got to stay connected emotionally, and it's the only way it can work."

                        Inside the Paint - Wednesday
                        Chris David

All things usually balance out in the long run and daily followers of the NBA are starting to see that trend take place at the betting counter recently. After watching the underdogs own the first three weeks after the All-Star break, favorites have started to flex in a big week. Since Monday, the ‘chalk’ has gone 11-2 straight up and 9-4 against the spread and that includes last night’s results of 7-0 SU and 5-2 ATS. For total players, the ‘under’ still holds a slight edge (79-68) in the second-half but I expect a big night of ‘over’ tickets to dominate the slate in the near future.

Game of the Night (ESPN, 9:35 p.m. ET)

Golden State (45-21 SU, 26-39-1 ATS) at Houston (42-25 SU, 31-34-2 ATS)

A possible preview of the Western Conference Finals will take place on Wednesday as the Warriors will meet the Rockets from the Toyota Center. Houston will be seeking an improbable sweep of the four-game season series and by doing so, the Rockets would only be three games behind the Warriors in the latest race for the top seed in the West.

Houston has been installed as a 3 ½-point home favorite and NBA expert Tony Mejia weighed in on the fourth showdown between the pair.

He said, “Steph Curry is calling this an opportunity to send a statement, but the fact Kevin Durant is coming off an ankle contusion means it doesn’t really mean all that much from that standpoint. The exception to that would be if Golden State were to win without him, but considering they fell apart against the lowly Suns without the reigning two-time MVP, it’s the Rockets that who are more likely to send a message in putting a little doubt in the Warriors on the heels of a stretch where they’ve gone 4-6.”

“Getting DeMarcus Cousins was always going to be taxing and he could be exposed as a liability due to his pick-and-roll defense against a team that boasts James Harden and Chris Paul, but injuries have further compounded things. Klay Thompson missed a couple of games, Draymond Green seems stuck in a place with no confidence to shoot the ball and key reserves Shaun Livingston and Kevon Looney have had their knocks. All that in addition to Durant’s unfortunate ankle tweak at home against Phoenix makes this a tough game for the Warriors and a prime opportunity for the Rockets to finish off a season sweep of the defending champs.”

As Mejia mentioned, the Warriors have gone 4-6 in their last 10 games and more importantly they’re 2-8 ATS during this span and that includes the embarrassing 115-11 loss at home to Phoenix on Sunday as 17-point home favorites. If you go back 20 games, Golden State is 6-14 ATS and its been favored in all of those games.

Catching points this season has been a rarity for Golden State but it has happened five teams and Steve Kerr’s team has gone 1-4 SU and 2-3 ATS. Kevin Durant (ankle) is ‘out’ Wednesday and the Warriors are 0-1 this season without him, a 103-96 decision at Orlando on Feb. 28.

While Golden State has struggled, Houston has been on fire with a 9-1 record in its last 10 games. The Rockets have gone 5-4-1 ATS during this run and the team is finally healthy. After starting the season with an 11-14 record, Mike D’Antoni and company have gone 31-11. A lot of that success has come at home with Houston going 24-9 SU and 18-14-1 ATS. That record also comes after the team started 0-4 at the Toyota Center.

From a head-to-head perspective, Mejia argues that a fully-active Rockets squad has an edge over the Warriors.

He explained, “Paul has missed one of this year’s victories, but it’s worth noting that the Rockets have defeated Golden State five of the last six times he’s taken the court for them and are 7-3 overall with him in the lineup since he came on board last season. With Kenneth Faried back, the Rockets are the healthiest they’ve been all season and have really dominated games on the defensive end during their nine-game winning streak, giving up 106 or fewer points in five consecutive contests.”

The total on this game is hovering between 230 and 231 points. Despite the offensive firepower on both sides, this series has been a great ‘under’ bet with the low side cashing in eight of the last 10 meetings. They did play to a 135-134 shootout on Jan. 3 from the Bay Area and the ‘over’ (232) in the recent meeting at Oracle Arena on Feb. 23 had a chance to go high but the Warriors were stifled late in a 118-112 loss to the Rockets.

Including four games from last year’s Western Conference Finals, the ‘under’ has gone 4-1 in the last five games between the pair from Houston. The Warriors have been a better ‘over’ (19-13) team on the road but they’re only averaging 101 points per game in their last five visits to Houston.

                        Eastern Test

Two teams fighting for playoff spots in the Eastern Conference will meet on Wednesday when Detroit (34-32 SU, 33-31-2 ATS) and Miami (31-35 SU, 35-31) meet at the American Airlines Arena. This will be the final meeting between the two teams and the Pistons have gone 2-1 both SU and ATS versus the Heat and that includes a 119-96 blowout win on Feb. 23 as 3 ½-point road underdogs. For the fairly quick rematch, Miami opened as a 1 ½-point favorite and some of the adjustment can be based on form.

Even though the Pistons were embarrassed 103-75 this past Monday as two-point road underdogs, the club still owns an 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS mark in the second-half of the season. Miami was also lit up in its last game, a 125-104 decision to Toronto as a two-point home favorite. Prior to that win, the Heat had won five of their last six games both SU and ATS with four of the victories coming at home.

The Pistons hold a three-game lead over the Heat for the seventh spot in the East so the sense or urgency should be much higher for Miami. Especially with the Bucks and Hornets visiting the American Airlines Arena later this week.

                        Roll the Ball Out

Meaningless matchups late in the NBA regular season happen often and I usually lean to the ‘over’ in those games knowing that the defense tends to be a tad looser. Wednesday’s game between Memphis and Atlanta fits perfectly and bettors are looking at a total of 221, which doesn’t seem high for Atlanta but it out of the norm for Memphis.

The Grizzlies have only had five totals listed in the 220s this season and not surprisingly, the ‘under’ has gone 5-0 in those games. The Memphis team we’ve seen lately has been running more and even though lack offensive consistency, point guard Mike Conley has been on a roll. Plus, the Hawks defense (118.7 PPG) is ranked last in scoring and they give up plenty of extra possessions due to turnovers, also ranked last in the league with 17.7 per game.

The pair met early in the season on Oct. 19 from Memphis and the Grizzlies notched a 131-117 win over the Hawks and the ‘over’ (216) was never in doubt. All signs point to another back-and-forth game in the second meeting.

                        Desert Heat

The Suns (16-52 SU, 31-37 ATS) have been on fire recently, going 5-2 SU and 6-1 ATS in their last seven games and that includes the largest upset of the NBA season on Sunday when the club stunned Golden State 115-111 as 17-point road underdogs. During this hot run, Phoenix has gone 3-1 at home and it’s been listed as an underdog in three of those games.

Fast forward to Wednesday and Phoenix (+7) is receiving points again to Utah (37-29 SU, 33-31-2 ATS) at home. Knowing the Jazz have dropped two straight and three of their last four games, the obvious lean would be to the underdog in this spot if you’re handicapping on current form.

However, this will be the first encounter between the pair this season and this series has been very lopsided. The Jazz have won four straight and 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Suns and they’ve gone 8-4 versus the number in those games. Also, Utah hasn’t lost three straight games since late November and it’s gone 4-2 both SU and ATS in its last six games as a road favorite.

                          • Westbrook has triple-double, Thunder beat Nets 108-96
                            March 14, 2019
                            By The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) Klay Thompson scored 30 points, DeMarcus Cousins had a season-high 27 and the Golden State Warriors snapped Houston's nine-game winning streak Wednesday night with a 106-104 victory over the Rockets.

Playing without injured star Kevin Durant, the Warriors bounced back from Sunday's loss to Phoenix and avoided being swept by Houston after the Rockets won the first three meetings this season.

Golden State, which had lost six of 10 overall, is 4 1/2 games ahead of Houston atop the Western Conference standings. The Rockets are tied with Oklahoma City for third place behind Denver.

After trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, a three-point play by Chris Paul got Houston within one with 10.8 seconds left. Stephen Curry made two free throws with eight seconds remaining to make it 106-103, and James Harden hit one of two from the line at the other end with 6.4 seconds to go. The miss on the second one bounced high off the rim and was rebounded by Andre Iguodala, securing Golden State's victory.

Harden had 29 points and 10 assists but shot just 2 of 12 on 3-pointers. Paul finished with 24 points.

Curry added 24 points for Golden State. Durant missed the game with a sprained right ankle.

                            THUNDER 108, NETS 96

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Russell Westbrook scored 31 points in his 26th triple-double of the season as Oklahoma City beat Brooklyn.

Westbrook added 12 rebounds and 11 assists for the 130th triple-double of his career.

Paul George scored 25 points and Jerami Grant added 15 for the Thunder, looking to secure home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

Spencer Dinwiddie had 25 points for the Nets, who won their previous four games.

                            HEAT 108, PISTONS 74

MIAMI (AP) - Justise Winslow scored 16 points and Miami opened the second half with a 21-0 run on the way to an easy win over Detroit.

It was the biggest spurt and largest victory margin this season for the Heat, who are trying to hang on in the Eastern Conference playoff race. Dion Waiters scored 14 points and Dwyane Wade had 11.

Blake Griffin scored 13 points for the Pistons, who have dropped consecutive games for the first time since late January.

Miami (32-35) is still No. 8 in the East, two games ahead of No. 9 Orlando and two games back of No. 7 Detroit.

Andre Drummond fouled out with 6:30 left and finished with five points and nine rebounds - snapping his run of 19 consecutive double-doubles, which left him tied with Bob Lanier for the Pistons record.

                            WIZARDS 100, MAGIC 90

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 23 points, Thomas Bryant had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Washington made up a little ground in the Eastern Conference playoff race with a win over Orlando.

Jabari Parker added eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to help the 11th-place Wizards move within 1 1/2 games of the ninth-place Magic. Washington improved to 2-0 on its five-game homestand and remained 3+ games behind Miami for the final postseason spot.

Bryant and Parker each went 9 of 12 from the field off the bench, with Bryant's performance coming one game after he was limited to two points and a single rebound in 14 minutes.

Nikola Vucevic had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Orlando, which has lost four of five.

                            JAZZ 114, SUNS 97

PHOENIX (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 16 of his 26 points in the second half to lead Utah past Phoenix.

Derrick Favors and Rudy Gobert added 18 points apiece for the Jazz. Gobert also grabbed 20 rebounds as Utah ended a two-game skid and pulled into a tie with the Los Angeles Clippers for the seventh playoff seed in the Western Conference.

Devin Booker's 27 points led the Suns, who came back from 14 down in the third quarter to tie the score but couldn't push past the Jazz in the fourth. Kelly Oubre Jr. added 18 points for the last-place Suns, who had won four of five.

                            HAWKS 132, GRIZZLIES 111

ATLANTA (AP) - John Collins had 27 points and 12 rebounds, Trae Young added 22 points and Atlanta snapped Memphis' three-game winning streak.

It marked the most points that the Grizzlies, who lead the NBA in scoring defense, have allowed this season.

C.J. Miles scored a season-high 33 points and Mike Conley finished with 20 for the sluggish Grizzlies, who never had a lead.

Thursday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                                13) I’m not a New Jersey Giants’ fan, I’m a Ram fan who spends way too much time handicapping sports. Not really sure what the Giants are thinking when they trade Odell Beckham but keep their 38-year old QB. They also dumped Vernon/Collins, so their defense has been depleted.

Peter King wrote that the Giants “…..are an expansion team with a 38-year old QB.”

Better hit a home run with those two draft picks they got from Cleveland. Giants have three of the first 37 picks in the draft, so there is opportunity there.

In fairness to the Giants, the last two Decembers, Beckham played one game, and caught three passes for 35 yards in that game. I’m not saying what they did was wrong, I’m just saying that what they’re doing confuses me. Why not go young at quarterback, too?

This is the first time since 1984 the Giants have two 1st-round picks in a draft. That year, they took LB Carl Banks and OL William Roberts.

                                12) Westgate SuperBook dropped Cleveland from 25-1 to 14-1 to win the Super Bowl; William Hill books lowered them from 25-1 to 18-1.

Giants went from 40-1 to 80-1 to win the Super Bowl, which seems a bit excessive. Maybe it is more accurate to say that 40-1 was too low to begin with.

                                11) Le’Veon Bell gets $52.5M, four years from the Jets. I’m curious how many of these contracts are affecting the NFL’s primetime schedule for this coming season.

Terrell Suggs played 16 years for the Ravens but is now on Arizona; that would be an interesting Monday night game.

Do the Steelers play the Jets this year?

Earl Thomas signed with the Ravens Wednesday; another potential 2019 primetime matchup.

                                10) No matter what, the NFL continues their amazing ability to stay in the headlines 12 months a year. After the NCAA’s, the NFL schedule will come out next month, then the draft is late next month. Always something going on.

                                9) Iona has won the MAAC tournament four years in a row; here is how they did in the NCAA’s the last three years:
                                — 2018, lost 89-67 to Duke (+20)
                                — 2017, lost 93-77 to Oregon (+15.5)
                                — 2016, lost 94-81 to Iowa State (+7.5)

Something tells me the Gaels might be heading to Dayton next week.

                                8) Saint Mary’s 60, Gonzaga 47— After the brackets come out Sunday night, it’ll be fun to try and figure out which team got KO’d from the tournament because Saint Mary’s won this game. Gonzaga hadn’t lost a conference tournament game since 2012.

                                7) William & Mary fired coach Tony Shaver Wednesday; the Tribe has never made the NCAA tournament, which is obviously a sticking point, but the last six years, W&M was 64-42 in CAA games, with all six seasons above .500 in conference play.

Last six years, Tribe was 6-6 in CAA tourney, losing in finals in both 2014, 2015- they lost to Delaware by a point in ’14. There is no guarantee the new coach will be a better coach than Shaver— JMU fired Matt Brady three years ago and is 19-35 in CAA games since then.

                                6) Was odd seeing Magic Johnson at the OVC tournament, watching Ja Morant play; you don’t expect to see an NBA legend courtside when you’re watching a Belmont-Murray State game. Magic was at the ACC tournament in Charlotte Wednesday.

                                5) NC State 59, Clemson 58— Tigers led by 18, but lost; they’re 18-13, and probably headed to the NIT. Here are some of the reasons they didn’t win 20 games:

                                — Nov 26, lost 68-66 to Nebraska
                                — Jan 26, lost 69-67 at NC State
                                — Feb 13, lost 65-64 at Miami
                                — Feb 16, lost 56-55 at Louisville
                                — March 2, lost 81-79 to North Carolina
                                — March 13, lost 59-58 to NC State

                                4) Ted Valentine did the Clemson-NC State noon game in Charlotte; wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised if he had showed up somewhere else on TV, reffing a night game. When was last time a ref worked two games in the same day? Has it ever happened at that level?

                                3) Big Sky tournament: 3-point shooting decided the first two games:
                                — Saacramento State 72, Northern Arizona 60— Hornets were 12-20 on the arc.
                                — Southern Utah 94, Idaho State 80— Thunderbirds were 11-15 on the arc.

                                2) West Virginia 72, Oklahoma 71— Kid on Oklahoma swished what looked like a game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but his toes were on the line, so it was only a 2-point shot and the Sooners head to the bubble- their next four days will be agonizing, waiting to hear their fate Sunday.

                                1) Cleveland Browns were going to sign WR Breshad Perriman, but when they traded for Beckham, that ship sailed, so Perriman signed a one-year, $4M deal with Tampa Bay instead.
