Game of the Night: Warriors at Thunder – 8:30 PM EST

There is no shortage of intrigue when these two Western Conference rivals get together. Golden State (46-21 SU, 27-39-1 ATS) has split the first two meetings with Oklahoma City (42-27 SU, 36-33 ATS) at Oracle Arena, while the two teams are even at 3-3 in six matchups since the start of the 2017-18 season.

Obviously, the storyline when these teams hook up is Kevin Durant facing his former team, but the Warriors’ All-Star is back in Oklahoma City for the first time since last April when Golden State left Chesapeake Energy Arena with a 111-107 victory. Fast-forward to this season where the Warriors hoisted another championship banner in the opener and held off the Thunder, 108-100 as 12 ½-point favorites. OKC played without Durant’s frenemy Russell Westbrook, who sat out the first two games of the season following offseason knee surgery.

The Thunder grabbed revenge in the next matchup in Oakland on November 21 in a 123-95 blowout of the two-time defending champions. Golden State was without its star Stephen Curry, as OKC jumped out to a 14-point halftime lead and outscored the Warriors, 36-16 in the fourth quarter. Westbrook struggled from the floor (5-for-15), but compiled a triple-double, while Dennis Schroder provided a huge spark off the bench with 32 points.

Golden State continues a tough four-game road swing against Western Conference foes as the Warriors avoided a season sweep by beating Houston on Wednesday, 106-104 as four-point underdogs. The Warriors have alternated wins and losses in the past six games, while managing the victory with Durant sidelined. The duo of Curry and Klay Thompson combined to score 54 points, while DeMarcus Cousins posted 27 points as the trio was the only three Warriors to register double-figure scoring.

Oklahoma City squandered an 18-point lead in Thursday’s 108-106 defeat at Indiana. Paul George torched his former team for 36 points, but the Thunder was limited to 18 points in the fourth quarter to fall to 2-6 in the past eight road contests. OKC has seen the UNDER in cash in four consecutive games, while not topping the 110-point mark during this stretch.

Both these Western powers have struggled to cover numbers recently as the Warriors own a 4-13 ATS record in the past 17 games, while the Thunder have compiled a 3-10 ATS mark the last 13 contests.

Blazers at Spurs – 8:35 PM EST

Portland (41-26 SU, 38-29 ATS) concludes a difficult three-game road trip on Saturday looking for a perfect 3-0 mark. After pulling away from the Clippers on Tuesday in a 21-point rout at Staples Center, the Blazers outscored the Pelicans on Friday, 66-53 in the second half of a 122-110 triumph. Portland grabbed the cover as hefty nine-point favorites, while receiving 47 points from the backcourt duo of C.J. McCollum and Damian Lillard.

The toughest task for the Blazers will be to knock off the Spurs (39-29 SU, 37-30-1 ATS), who have lost only seven times in 33 tries at AT&T Center. San Antonio will also be playing with no rest after routing New York, 109-83 to avenge a road defeat to the Knicks last month. The Spurs rebounded nicely from the disastrous Rodeo Trip which saw them go 1-7 as San Antonio has run off seven straight victories.

This is the final regular season meeting between these Western squads as the home team has captured the first three contests. The OVER cashed all three times as the Blazers won the most recent matchup at the Moda Center, 127-118 last month. San Antonio dropped 131 points on Portland in the past hookup at AT&T Center in December, led by DeMar DeRozan’s 36 points, while LaMarcus Aldridge added 29 points.

Pacers at Nuggets – 9:05 PM EST

No team will endure a tougher eight-game stretch this season than Indiana (44-25 SU, 35-34 ATS) is currently in the midst of. The Pacers rallied to shock the Thunder on Thursday, 108-106 on a tip-in by Wesley Matthews in the final seconds to improve to 27-9 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. Now, Indiana starts a four-game road trip that begins in Denver, followed by a back-to-back set against the Blazers and Clippers, then closes out at Golden State. In case you’re wondering, the next three games after this brutal trip are against the Nuggets at home and visits to Oklahoma City and Boston.

The Nuggets (45-22 SU, 36-31 ATS) bounced back from a 17-point defeat at Golden State to knock off Minnesota and Dallas at home. Although they failed to cover as 11 ½-point favorites on Thursday, the Nuggets still managed their 29th home win of the season on a Nikola Jokic buzzer-beater to edge the Mavericks, 100-99. The Nuggets remain one game behind the Warriors for the top seed in the Western Conference and home-court advantage throughout the first three rounds.

Denver is riding an incredible 9-1 UNDER run since the All-Star break, including five UNDERS at Pepsi Center. The Pacers have dropped eight consecutive visits to Pepsi Center since 2009, but each of the past three losses in Denver have come by three points each. Indiana will be looking to snap a four-game road skid, while suffering double-digits defeats most recently at Milwaukee and Philadelphia.

Nets at Jazz – 9:05 PM EST

Both these squads enter Saturday’s action as the seventh seed in their respective conferences with less than a month remaining in the regular season. Brooklyn (36-34 SU, 37-33 ATS) saw its four-game winning streak come to an abrupt halt on Wednesday at Oklahoma City in a 108-96 setback. The Nets built a 10-point halftime lead, but were outscored, 66-44 in the second half as Brooklyn failed to cash seven-point underdogs.

The Jazz (39-29 SU, 35-31-2 ATS) are on their way to their fourth consecutive season with at least 40 wins, as Utah hasn’t reached this milestone since 2007-10. Utah cruised past Minnesota on Friday, 120-100 to cash as nine-point home favorites, led by Donovan Mitchell’s 24 points. The Jazz have won nine of 12 home games against Eastern Conference foes, including eight of the past 10 games overall against teams from the East.

Utah won at Barclays Center in late November, 101-91 as 3 ½-point favorites to grab its fourth win in the past five matchups. The Nets have cashed in six of their last nine games in the role of a road underdog, while riding a six-game UNDER streak in the past six games overall.

          • Spurs' win streak at 8; Blazers lose McCollum to leg injury
            March 16, 2019
            By The Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO (AP) DeMar DeRozan scored 21 points and the San Antonio Spurs extended their winning streak to eight games with a 108-103 victory Saturday night over the Portland Trail Blazers, who lost C.J. McCollum to a left leg injury.

Damian Lillard scored 34 points for Portland, which had won three straight.

McCollum exited under assistance with 7:03 remaining in the third quarter. He remained on the court for a few minutes clutching his left leg in great pain after tumbling out of bounds when his driving layup was blocked by Jakob Poeltl. McCollum appeared to roll his left ankle but was clutching his shin. There was no word on his status.

            WARRIORS 110, THUNDER 88

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Stephen Curry scored 33 points to help Golden State roll past Oklahoma City and clinch a playoff berth.

Klay Thompson scored 23 points and DeMarcus Cousins added 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Warriors, who played without Kevin Durant for a second straight game because of a sprained right ankle.

Paul George had 29 points and 13 rebounds, and Dennis Schroder added 15 points for the Thunder. Russell Westbrook scored just seven points on 2-for-16 shooting and missed all seven of his 3-point attempts. He had nine assists and eight rebounds.

            SUNS 138, PELICANS 136

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Josh Jackson hit a tying 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in overtime, the Pelicans were assessed a technical foul when they called a timeout they didn't have and Devin Booker hit the free throw to give Phoenix the lead for good.

Booker finished with 40 points to go with 13 assists, and Jackson, who had 19 points, scored the game's final point on a free throw after he was fouled on an inbound pass with less than a second on the clock.

Elfrid Payton had 16 points, 16 assists and 13 rebounds in his fourth straight triple-double - all coming in the midst of New Orleans' six-game losing streak.

            MAVERICKS 121, CAVALIERS 116

DALLAS (AP) -Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 22 points, Dirk Nowitzki closed within three points of Wilt Chamberlain on the NBA scoring list and Dallas ended a seven-game losing streak.

Nowitzki got hot early in the fourth quarter and finished with 14 points to bring him to the cusp of Chamberlain for sixth place on the career scoring list. He has another home game on Monday before the team leaves on a three-game road trip.

With leading scorer Luka Doncic out with a right knee contusion, Hardaway led a balanced Dallas attack with seven Mavs scoring in double figures.

Collin Sexton scored 28 for the Cavaliers, the rookie's fifth straight game above 20. Kevin Love and Cedi Osman each had 22 for Cleveland, which has lost three in a row.

            NUGGETS 102, PACERS 100

DENVER (AP) - Paul Millsap hit a left-handed layup with 7 seconds remaining, Nikola Jokic scored 26 points before being ejected in the fourth quarter for arguing and Denver moved to the verge of its first playoff spot since 2012-13.

The magic number for the Nuggets dropped to one as they remained in the No. 2 spot behind Golden State. Denver ran its home record to a Western Conference-leading 30-6.

Millsap finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds for Denver, which overcame an 18-point, first-half deficit.

Thaddeus Young led Indiana with 18 points and 10 boards.

            JAZZ 114, NETS 98

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Donovan Mitchell scored 24 points, Rudy Gobert added 23 points and 17 rebounds, and Utah beat Brooklyn.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 22 points and D'Angelo Russell added 20 for Brooklyn. The Nets dropped their second in a row after winning four straight.

            CELTICS 129, HAWKS 120

BOSTON (AP) - Kyrie Irving just missed his second straight triple-double with 30 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists, Jaylen Brown scored 23 points with a key 3-pointer and Boston held off Atlanta after blowing a 25-point, second-half lead.

Marcus Morris had 19 points and Jayson Tatum 18 for Boston, which has won six of eight.

Trae Young led the Hawks with 26 points, John Collins scored 20 with 11 rebounds, Taurean Price had 17 points and Vince Carter scored 16.

            WIZARDS 135, GRIZZLIES 128

WASHINGTON (AP) - Bradley Beal scored 40 points for the second straight night and Washington beat Memphis.

Beal shot 12 of 17 from the field and made a career-high nine 3-pointers. The Wizards converted 17 of 35 from beyond the arc in a game that featured 20 lead changes.

The Wizards, 11th in the Eastern Conference, moved within three games of eighth-place Miami.

              • Sunday’s 6-pack

Some trends to consider when filling out your brackets:

                — Six of last nine Final Fours had only one #1 seed in it.

                — That said, last four national games had six #1 seeds, a 2-seed and a 3-seed.

                — Last time a #4-seed made the Final Four; 2013.

                — Five of last six years, a team seeded #7 or worse made the Final Four.

                — Since 2002, #2-seeds are 64-4 SU in first round; last six years, #3-seeds are 19-5.

                — Last two years, Big East teams are only 7-6 in the first round.

                Quote of the Day
“We are pleased to welcome Johnny Manziel to Alliance of American Football, which we’ve always described as a league of opportunity for talented players to launch or revitalize their pro football careers. We completed extensive background work to determine whether it would be appropriate for Johnny to play this season, and after consulting with many people familiar with his situation, we concluded that it would be good for him to resume his pro football career here at The Alliance.”
AAF Head of Football Bill Polian

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday

                13) I’m watching the Seton Hall-Marquette game Friday night, and it dawned on me; half the league has to travel halfway cross the country for the conference tournament every year, while the other half of the league? Their fans can drive or take the train to Madison Square Garden.

This is the sixth year of the “new” Big East; during that time, the midwestern part of the league is 8-19 SU against the eastern part in the conference tournament.

Creighton lost in finals of the tournament twice, Xavier once, but no midwestern team has won it, and this year is no different. Something to think about going forward.

                12) Houston 61, Memphis 58— This is going to be the last year in the foreseeable future where Memphis won’t go to the NCAA’s; Penny Hardaway did a good job in his first season, and he is crushing it on the recruiting trail. Memphis has a lot of high school talent.

                11) Tennessee 82, Kentucky 78— This is Wildcats’ first loss in SEC tourney since a 61-60 loss to Florida in the finals of the 2014 tournament. Tennessee plays Sunday for its first tournament title since 1979.

Both of these teams are really good and either could win the NCAA title.

Sometimes it is better to lose in the semi-final of the tourneys that play their final on Sunday; one thing you do NOT want is to play on Sunday, then draw a Thursday game in the NCAA’s, especially if it is Thursday afternoon— not lot of prep time.

                10) Michigan 76, Minnesota 49— Wolverines got swept by rival Michigan State this season; now the teams meet a third time, for the Big 14 title.

                9) Utah State 64, San Diego State 57— You could make a legit argument for Chris Smith to be national Coach of the Year. Last three years, Aggies were 22-32 in Big West games; this year, in his first season in Logan, Utah State is 27-6, 18-3 in conference.

                8) Iowa State 78, Kansas 66— Cyclones won Big X tournament for 4th time in last six years; this year, they came into the tournament on a 2-6 skid, but they seem to like Kansas City.

                7) Villanova 74, Seton Hall 72— Wildcats win Big East tournament for fourth time in last five years. For the season, 54% of Villanova’s shots were 3-pointers; thats unusual for a good team.

                6) Oregon 68, Washington 48— Huskies laid an egg here; they scored two points in first 9:30 of second half. Washington is 5-4 in its last nine games, after starting season 19-4.

                5) Chargers signed QB Tyrod Taylor this week, an excellent signing by a team in desperate need of a backup for aging Philip Rivers, who will be 38 in December. Last year’s Chargers’ backup QB’s were Geno Smith and Cardale Jones; Taylor is a huge upgrade from those two.

                4) Cleveland Browns’ QB Baker Mayfield took batting practice and then coached first base for the Milwaukee Brewers Saturday. Apparently Mayfield is buddies with Christian Yelich; he hit a foul ball into the stands that broke a woman’s watch.

                3) Pittsburgh Pirates honored TV analyst Steve Blass this weekend in Florida, naming the press box in Bradenton after him. Blass has been on TV for the Pirates for the last 34 years- he also pitched for the Pirates for a decade, helping them win the 1971 World Series.

in 2009, Blass recorded two hole-in-ones in the same round of golf, a pretty cool feat.

                2) During that same game, Pirates’ TV guys were insisting that Starling Marte has as much talent as Bryce Harper or Manny Machado, an interesting claim.

                1) Way back in 1963, the San Francisco Giants had three Alou brothers on their team: Matty, Felipe and Jesus. All three could hit;
                — Matty wound up with a .307 career batting average over 15 years,
                — Felipe wound up being a manager, winning more games than he lost over 14 years.
                — Jesus hit .280 in 15 major league seasons, winning two World Series rings with the A’s.

This year, Vermont has three brothers on its team this year; the Duncans- Ernie, Robin and Everett. Never heard of three brothers on the same basketball team before. Now they’re all going to March Madness together, which is pretty cool.

Game of the Night - Brooklyn at L.A. Clippers (-6, 232), 9:05 ET, Prime Ticket

A pair of Eastern Conference powers square off in the afternoon, but since we’re seeking out a “Game of the Night” here, the lone matchup featuring teams that should both make the playoffs will have to suffice.

There are notes on 76ers-Bucks below, but we’ve got you owls covered on Nets-Clips, which pits teams looking at undesirable playoff matchups at the moment. Considering neither was expected to make the postseason back in October, its not so bad that they’re currently slated to open on the road against the Raptors and Warriors. It’s also not ideal and potentially preventable.

Brooklyn is currently only ahead Southeast Division-leading Miami among likely playoff teams, but will be vying with Detroit for the No. 6 seed and has a difficult schedule to navigate considering this is the third of a seven-game road trip that opened with double-digit losses to the Thunder and Jazz and continues with games against the Kings, Lakers and Trail Blazers after this one before finishing up in Philadelphia. It has just four home games left. All will come against teams currently expected to make the playoffs.

The Nets will need to pull off a few upsets if they’re going to finish above .500 for the first time since 2013-14. It’s unlikely that two Southeast teams will be able to play well enough to surpass their record and prevent them from ending a playoff drought that dates back to ’15, but that possibility does exist given their grueling remaining slate.

The Clippers have pulled away from Sacramento in the race for the West’s No. 8 seed and will reach the playoffs unless they collapse and lose 10 of their final 12 while the Kings win 75 percent of their remaining games. Mathematically, it’s possible, but highly unlikely.

Doc Rivers’ team will almost certainly be playing on in mid-April and would love to open anywhere but Oakland, so they’ll have to catch one of the teams in front of them unless Golden State falls behind Denver again in the race for the top seed. L.A. is 9-3 over its last 12 games as it heads into its final dozen contests, so another stretch of success like the one it is currently enjoying could result in potentially landing homecourt advantage for the first round since it has pulled just 2.5 games behind the Trail Blazers, who currently hold residence in that spot. Portland is anxiously anticipating hearing what guard C.J. McCollum’s MRI results say about the knee injury he suffered in the third quarter of Saturday night’s costly loss in San Antonio.

A win tonight would guarantee a .500 record for the Clippers, who have surprised since seemingly giving up their pursuit of a postseason appearance when they traded Tobias Harris to Philadelphia in January in order to open up a second max-salary slot for this summer while adding multiple first-round picks and impressive rookie shooter Landry Shamet. L.A. is 10-5 since the deal.

The Clippers have won seven of their last eight games in a favorite’s role (5-2-1 ATS) and come off a 128-121 win over the Bulls on Friday night that saw them fall victim to a backdoor cover. They struggled some but ultimately pulled away despite a big night from Chicago’s Zach LaVine. L.A. got big nights from small forward Danilo Gallinari and big man Montrezl Harrell. Lou Williams became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer off the bench earlier this week and is also in excellent form, while defensive standout Patrick Beverley continues to set the tone by doing all the little things on offense while attempting to make life miserable for whoever he’s assigned to guard.

The Nets sat Allen Crabbe in Saturday night’s blowout loss in Utah due to a knee issue and don’t have backup guard Shabazz Napier available due to a hamstring strain. It remains to be seen if either participates. The Jazz clamped down and dominated the paint in a 114-98 loss, their second straight double-digit loss on this trip following Wednesday’s 12-point loss in Oklahoma City.

L.A. won the first meeting with the Nets in Brooklyn 127-119 on Nov. 17, getting 28 points from Gallinari to rally from a 15-point deficit. Center Jarrett Allen led Brooklyn with a career-high 24 points in addition to 11 rebounds, but he’s gotten off to a rough start against Steven Adams and Rudy Gobert, wrestling with foul trouble while averaging just six points and five boards in 25.5 minutes. He’s got a more favorable matchup here at the onset against L.A.’s Ivica Zubac and will need to get off to a strong start to help Brooklyn attempt to rebound. The Nets are 3-9 on the second night of a back-to-back this season, covering only twice. They’ve had a number of no-shows and weren’t exactly competitive in Salt Lake City, shooting just under 35 percent while being outrebounded 65-44. Brooklyn is just 1-12 when held 100 points.

The Nets haven’t beaten the Clippers at Staples center since 2010. They’ll be back in the building to face the Lakers on Friday night. The ‘under’ has prevailed in seven consecutive games involving Brooklyn.

                            Best of the Rest

Charlotte at Miami, 1:05 p.m. ET:
The Heat open Sunday's action a-game up on the Magic and these Hornets, so taking care of business at home is essential. We'll see if they can get an assist from Saturday night in South Florida since the Hornets came into town after beating the Wizards in D.C. on Friday. They should be fresh given time off earlier this week but were held to just 84 points the last time they saw Miami back on March 6.

Philadelphia at Milwaukee, 3:35 p.m. ET, ABC:
The 76ers saw all five of their starters score in double-figures last time out, which is especially important since there haven't been many games where they've been able to put Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Jimmy Butler, Tobias Harris and J.J. Redick in the lineup. The Bucks rallied from 20 points down at the break and wound up crushing the Heat by 15 points, but the win proved costly since guard Malcolm Brogdon suffered a torn plantar fascia and will miss at least six weeks, likely keeping him out of at least the frist round of the playoffs. These teams played way back on Oct. 24 at Fiserv Forum. Milwaukee posted a dominant 123-108 win despite 30 points and 19 rebounds from Joel Embiid as Giannis Antetokounmpo put together a 32-point, 18-rebound, 10-assist performance.

                                **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Quick thoughts on the field of 68……

                                13) If you look at the last 13 national champs, those teams went 12-1 against the spread in their first round tournament game. Only exception was Kentucky in 2012, who won 81-66 (-26). UConn won its first round game in OT in 2014, but covered 89-81 (-5).

                                12) Bobby Hurley coached Buffalo for two years (42-20), then bolted western NY for Arizona State; his Sun Devils have to beat St John’s in Dayton, and if they do, Hurley and Buffalo will be re-united Friday in Tulsa. Buffalo spanked ASU’s rival Arizona by 21 in first round last year.

Since replacing Hurley, Nate Oats is 95-42 in four years at Buffalo, but before the Bulls get to play Arizona State, the Sun Devils still have to beat St John’s.

                                11) Richard Pitino’s Minnesota Gophers playing Louisville, the school that ran his father out of town two years ago, is classic sidebar material. Rick Pitino won the national title with Louisville six short years ago. Lot of stuff has happened since then.

Rick Pitino is coaching pro ball in Greece now; UCLA, UNLV have jobs open, which lends itself to speculation, but for now Richard’s Gophers vs Louisville is the main event.

                                10) Tennessee Volunteers are a #2-seed in the South Region, but they can’t be very happy about the prospects of a second round game against Cincinnati………in Columbus, OHIO.

                                9) Montana-Michigan play in the first round for the second year in a row; I’m thinking that could’ve been avoided.

                                8) Clemson, NC State and Texas are the highest-rated teams that didn’t get in the NCAA’s; Lipscomb, Furman and NC-Greensboro also have to be pretty disappointed.

                                7) No team has ever lost its first conference tournament game, and then gone on to win the national championship. Texas Tech, LSU, Purdue, Maryland fall into that category.

                                6) Virginia Tech’s star PG Justin Robinson missed the last 12 games with a foot injury, but he’ll be back for the NCAA tournament. Hokies play Saint Louis in the first round Friday.

                                5) If you care about such things, over the last five years, the underdog is 12-8 vs spread in first round 4-13 games. Over last six years, underdogs are 14-10 vs spread in 3-14 games.

                                4) Last four years, the 11-seed is 7-5 SU in the first round against the 6-seed; the 11-seed was the underdog in all seven of their wins.

                                3) Over the last 23 years, in the West Region final, the underdog is 17-6 against the spread. During that time, when the #1-seed in the West got to the regional final, they’re 4-8 SU in that regional final.

                                2) Over the last 16 years, in the Midwest Region final, the underdog is 12-4 against the spread. #1-seeds have fared better in this regional final, going 10-7 SU in their last 17 tries.

                                1) My pick for the national title? I’ll take Virginia.
