Game of the Night - San Antonio at Sacramento (-1.5, 227), 10:05 ET, NBATV

The Spurs weren’t supposed to be ahead in the Southwest Division when their annual “Rodeo Road Trip” came around this season, so they’ll be living out of their luggage playing with house money.

Don’t call it a free-roll though. There’s plenty at stake as the city’s pro basketball gets out of Dodge to make way for the annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo. This annual exodus has happened every year since 2003 and doubles as the time where Gregg Popovich likes to see his team truly gel in preparation for the latest title run after his group went 8-1 over the course of the first one, ultimately winning a championship.

With Kawhi Leonard out last season, the Spurs took the step back everyone had been expecting and prematurely counting on for years, so the trip has taken on a different feel. This season has come out of nowhere since not even Pop expected DeMar DeRozan to get so well acclimated immediately and the defensive capacity of Leonard and Danny Green to be adequately replaced.

Last season marked only the second losing “Rodeo trip” out of 18 excursions, producing a 2-4 finish in what was a brutal season by Spurs standards. They finished 47-35 and were swept out by Golden State and weren’t counted on to be among the Western Conference’s top-eight given LeBron James’ arrival and the expected emergence of teams like the Pelicans and Nuggets.

As this season’s eight-game roadie begins, the Spurs have won five consecutive contests and hold a one-game edge on the Rockets in the division. The rest of the division is stuck under .500 and few would expect the Pels, Mavs or Grizzlies to make a run, so it’s entirely conceivable that the Spurs will win the Southwest and potentially even open the playoffs at home. As the week opens, they rank fifth in the West and would play the Trail Blazers if the postseason opened today, but roughly 30 games remain for most and plenty remains to be decided.

With Chris Paul back and James Harden among the frontrunners for MVP, the Rockets will be expected to nose back out in front of San Antonio, which came into the season with 12-to-1 odds to win the Southwest Division according to the Westgate LV Superbook. Houston was a 1/10 favorite, which means you would’ve had to wager $1000 for every buck you wanted to win for it to come through. This would’ve been an awful bet and you’re being punished for making it if you did so.

For the rest of us, the Spurs’ resurgence has been a terrific story. Despite losing projected starting point guard Dejounte Murray in the preseason, Derrick White and Bryn Forbes have stepped up alongside veteran Patty Mills, while Rudy Gay has been incredibly efficient in his starting role alongside DeRozan and All-Star LaMarcus Aldridge, doing whatever has been asked of him.

San Antonio is 90-43 on this February roadie since ’03, which is absolutely remarkable considering what a challenge it is to win in opposing an arena. The Spurs’ winning percentage is .677.

For DeRozan, this annual trip will be a new experience, but most have already been through at least one of these roadies that Popovich counts on to improve camaraderie. Despite his team’s winning streak, the veteran head coach hasn’t been a happy camper, calling out his team for disrespecting the Suns with their lack of effort last week despite winning on a Gay jumper at the buzzer. San Antonio comes off a victory over depleted New Orleans, which had a chance to tie the game despite trailing by 22 points with just over five minutes remaining. The Pelicans have been victimized twice by the Spurs on their five-game run, while the team’s other wins have come against the Wizards, Nets and Suns. Only Brooklyn has a winning record among that group.

The level of competition intensifies since all but two of the eight opponents they’ll see before returning home to host the Pistons at the end of the month is currently over .500. After visiting the Kings, San Antonio will play at the Warriors, Trail Blazers, Jazz and Grizzlies prior to the All-Star break. The Spurs will resume action in Toronto on Feb. 22 before facing Brooklyn and New York on consecutive nights prior to returning to South Texas.

Getting off to a strong start in Sacramento is vital considering a back-to-back in Oakland and Portland awaits mid-week. The Spurs will be a heavy underdog in all their games this week with the exception of this one. They’re favored on the road for just the eighth time this season in this one and come in 4-3 SU/3-4 ATS in this situation.

San Antonio’s defense has slipped over the past month due to poor communication, so it’s not ideal that they’ll be without White, the point guard who has stepped up as an x-factor on both sides of the ball while serving as the team’s top on-ball defender. The Spurs have only held two opponents under 100 points over their last dozen games and will need their transition defense to come up a few notches to contain the Kings, who employ a pace faster than most NBA teams and bring a lot of athleticism to the mix, which is something the Spurs have struggled with.

Sacramento opens play this week just one game behind the Clippers for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. It is a half-game up on the Lakers and look to continue making inroads on a six-game homestand that has opened with wins over the Hawks and 76ers.

The Rockets, Heat and Suns come into town after San Antonio, so this will be a crucial stretch for them as well. Rookie forward Marvin Bagley III has given the team a boost with his productive energy off the bench and is averaging 16.2 points and 10 rebounds over his last five games. After producing three triple-doubles between the start of the season and Jan. 12, Bagley has registered four over his last nine contests. Buddy Hield has also impressed in becoming a more consistent scorer and knocked down seven 3-pointers to help upset Philly on Saturday night, finishing with 34 points. Sacramento is 8-5 when he scored more than 25.

The Kings won the only meeting against the Spurs thus far this season, posting 104-99 win on Nov. 12 to snap a 14-game losing streak against San Antonio. They capitalized off turnovers, using their speed to create issues in overcoming DeRozan’s 23 points and eight boards. Bogdan Bogdanovic led Sacramento with 22 points. The ‘under’ connected in that game and has gone 11-1-1 over the last 13 Kings games. The Spurs have won an unbelievable 42 of 46 meetings between these teams since the last time they lost consecutive games – back in the 2006 first round of the playoffs. They’ll be look to avoid that fate tonight.

                What defense?

The Wizards host the Hawks with Washington listed as 6.5-point home favorites. The Wizards are coming off a 131-115 loss to Milwaukee on Saturday, and the Hawks are coming off a 118-112 win versus the Suns.

Both defenses rank in the bottom three of the NBA in points per game, surrendering over 115.6 a contest and allowing opponents to shoot over 47 percent from the floor. In what should be a high scoring affair played with minimal defense, back the game total Over 232.

                What Offense?

Both the Nuggets and Pistons rank in the top 10 in opponent points per game, with Denver surrendering 106.1, and Detroit 108.3. Offensively, the Nuggets are averaging only 106.9 points per game away from home – substantially lower than their 116.5 at home.

With the Under hitting in five of the last six when playing at Little Caesars Arena, and seven of the last eight overall in the head-to-head, back the game total Under 211.

In for a big night against his former team

The Milwaukee Bucks travel to Brooklyn to take on the Nets having won nine of the last 10 games in the head-to-head, and 11 of their last 12 overall. The Nets have been playing well at home overall, posting a 16-11 record and winning five straight at Barclays Center.

Look for Bucks center Brook Lopez to have success today versus a Nets team surrendering an average of 25 points on 52.2 percent shooting, and 17.6 rebounds per game to opposing centers. Back Over his points, rebounds, assists total of 19.5.

                Kicking them while they’re down

Indiana has lost four of their last five games while failing to score over 101 points in three straight contests. Today the Pacers take on a Pelicans team who have played well on their home court this season, posting a 15-9 record and averaging 117.6 points per game.

Although the Pels have lost two straight games they were versus quality teams in the Nuggets and Spurs and they should be happy to return home today. Take the 3-points with New Orleans as the Pacers have really struggled without Victor Oladipo.

                Owning the head-to-head in Sac-town

The Spurs put their five-game winning streak on the line as they take on the Kings who have won 16 of 26 at home this season but have historically struggled versus San Antonio.
The Spurs have won 18 of the last 20 games when playing on the road at Sacramento.

With the Spurs' playing some of their best basketball of the season and scoring no less than 113 points over their last five contests, look for them to find success and continue to dominate the matchup versus the Kings. Back San Antonio on the money line as small favorites.

                  • Big game for Giannis helps NBA-best Bucks beat Nets 113-94
                    February 4, 2019
                    By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo had 30 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists, and the Milwaukee Bucks beat the cold-shooting Brooklyn Nets 113-94 on Monday night.

The injury-depleted Nets missed 19 of their first 20 3-point attempts, making it another easy night for the team with the NBA's best record. Brooklyn finished 5 for 42 (11.9 percent) behind the arc.

Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points and Eric Bledsoe had 15 for the Bucks, who won their fourth straight, all by double digits.

D'Angelo Russell scored 18 points for the Nets, who have been forced to go deep down their roster because of injuries and lost their third in a row.

                    ROCKETS 118, SUNS 110

PHOENIX (AP) - James Harden scored 44 points, his 20th 40-point game of the season, and Houston handed Phoenix its 11th straight loss.

Harden joined Wilt Chamberlain, Michael Jordan and Rick Barry as the only NBA players with 20 games of at least 40 points in the first 50 of a season.

Harden, who also had eight rebounds and six assists, extended his streak of games with at least 30 points to 27, third-longest in NBA history.

Chris Paul scored 18 and Kenneth Faried had 17 points and 14 rebounds for the Rockets, who were without two starters.

Josh Jackson scored 25 points for the Suns.

                    PISTONS 129, NUGGETS 103

DETROIT (AP) - Andre Drummond scored 14 of his season-high 27 points in the third quarter and Detroit snapped Denver's six-game winning streak.

Detroit blew a 25-point lead in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, but the Pistons poured it on this time. Blake Griffin added 17 points for Detroit, and Reggie Jackson scored 14.

Trey Lyles had 20 points for the Nuggets, who dropped out of a tie with Golden State for the best record in the Western Conference.

Denver was without forward Paul Millsap, sidelined by right ankle soreness, and the Nuggets were also missing Gary Harris (right adductor strain) and Jamal Murray (left ankle sprain).

                    HAWKS 137, WIZARDS 129

WASHINGTON (AP) - Taurean Prince scored 12 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and hit five of Atlanta's 20 3-pointers against Washington.

Rookie guard Kevin Huerter added 19 points and also hit five 3s in his return to the region where he played college ball at Maryland. Two of those 3s came during an early 16-2 run that put the Hawks up 28-16 late in the first quarter, a lead they did not give back.

Vince Carter scored 16 points in 16 minutes after halftime. John Collins had 15 points and 11 rebounds despite exiting at the break with a cut on his face.

Trae Young added 10 points and 10 assists as nine Hawks reached double figures. Atlanta finished 20 of 41 from beyond the arc to close a 4-3 road trip.

Bradley Beal had 18 of his 27 points in the fourth for the Wizards, who slipped into a 10th-place tie with Orlando in the Eastern Conference playoff race, three games back of eighth-place Miami.

                    PACERS 109, PELICANS 107

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Darren Collison capped a 22-point performance with a 3-pointer, a 20-foot jumper with the shot clock winding down and a free throw during the final two minutes as Indiana held off depleted New Orleans.

Domantas Sabonis had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Myles Turner added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who won their second straight.

The Pelicans, playing without five of their most productive players - including disgruntled All-Star Anthony Davis - have lost three straight. Each loss has been by six or fewer points to teams currently occupying playoff positions in the standings.

Jahlil Okafor had 25 points and 13 rebounds for New Orleans. Jrue Holiday added 19 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

                        13) Jeremiah Martin is a 6-3 senior at Memphis; he was scoreless in the first half Saturday at South Florida, when the Tigers fell behind USF 27-1; it was 38-13 at halftime.

Then Martin scored 41 points in the second half. By himself.

Martin made 7-9 on arc as Memphis made a run but fell short, losing 84-78 to the Bulls.

                        12) Oakland Raiders will play next season at the SF Giants’ baseball park, before moving to Las Vegas in 2020. Two new NFL stadiums in ’20, Las Vegas and Los Angeles.

                        11) Deondre Francois was dismissed from the Florida State football team on Sunday by coach Willie Taggart one day after a video was posted to Instagram by a woman — believed to be Francois’ girlfriend — where you could hear (but not see) a man making threats and admitting to various forms of physical and mental abuse.

Francois is a pretty good QB; schools will be interested in him, despite all that.

                        10) A new football league kicks off this Saturday, the AAF, with 8 teams playing a 10-game schedule. Most of the head coaches are well-known names, but coach of the Atlanta team is a guy named Kevin Coyle, a 63-year old football lifer. Here is his coaching resume:

                        — 1978-79: U of Cincinnati, grad assistant
                        — 1980: Arkansas, coaching assistant
                        — 1981: Merchant Marine Academy, defensive coordinator
                        — 1982-5: Holy Cross, assistant coach
                        — 1986-90: Holy Cross, defensive coordinator
                        — 1991-93: Syracuse, defensive coordinator
                        — 1994-96: Maryland, defensive coordinator
                        — 1997-2000: Fresno State, defensive coordinator
                        — 2001-02: Cincinnati Bengals, cornerbacks’ coach
                        — 2003-11: Cincinnati Bengals, defensive backs’ coach
                        — 2012-15: Miami Dolphins, defensive coordinator
                        — 2016-17: Cincinnati Bengals, defensive backs’ coach
                        — 2018: LSU, defensive analyst

                        Quite a career.

                        9) All the AAF games will be televised this season, either on NFL Network, CBS Sports Network, Turner Sports or B-R Live (I’m not really sure what that is).

                        8) Bill Walton told a great story on TV Saturday about way back in the mid-60’s, when freshmen were ineligible to play college basketball, so they had freshman teams.

UCLA’s varsity had won the national title the year before, but now they had a freshman named Lew Alcindor; the freshman team beat the defending national champs by 20 in a preseason exhibition game. UCLA’s fans were stunned.

After the game in the locker room, coach John Wooden looked at his current varsity and said, “Looks like we’ll have a pretty good team next year.”

Bruins didn’t win that year (Texas Western did), but then they won the next seven national titles.

                        7) Bob Valvano brought up an interesting point Sunday night; Super Bowl commercials aren’t funny anymore, because advertisers are terrified of offending someone in our more politically correct world. To be funny is to be edgy, but if you’re edgy SOMEONE will get offended, and then you lose that someone’s business. No one wants to lose business.

Our society, to a large extent, has lost its sense of humor. Or, to paraphrase what Michael Jordan once said, “(Fill in demographic) buy sneakers, too.”

                        6) Big East is a two-horse race this year:

Villanova is 9-0, Marquette is 8-1 in conference games.

No one else in the Big East is at .500 in conference; St John’s, Creighton, Georgetown are all 4-5 in league games. Butler, Seton Hall and DePaul are 4-6. Providence is 3-6, Xavier 3-7.

Any game between teams in the bottom 8 is interesting; Marquette has more skilled shooters than anyone else. Villanova seems to be improving a lot as the season goes on.

                        5) We have a minor league baseball team here in the Albany area, the Tri-City Valley Cats, who play games at Hudson Valley CC in a nice ballpark. Valley Cats’ manager this year will be Ozney Guillen, son of the former White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen.

Valley Cats are a Class A affiliate of the Astros, playing in the NY-Penn League.

                        4) Wednesday of this week is National Signing Day for college football, then Thursday is the NBA trade deadline, so there will be lot of news this week made off the field/court.

                        3) Nevada sportsbooks won $10,780,319 off of $145,939,025 worth of bets on the Super Bowl

New Jersey sportsbooks lost $4.5M statewide on the Super Bowl off of $34.8M wagered

                        2) Last year’s Final Four was the first one since 2005 where all three favorites covered the three Final Four games.

                        1) So I go to the **** for lunch the other day, looking forward to some pizza and a Coke; I get there, and the freakin’ pizza place is boarded up, closed. How does a **** not have a pizza place?

                        No bueno.

                          • Tuesday's Tip Sheet
                            Kevin Rogers

Game of the Night: Raptors at 76ers – 8:05 PM EST

These two Atlantic division foes are in the mix to represent the Eastern Conference in the NBA Finals along with Milwaukee and Boston. The Raptors (38-16 SU, 24-30 ATS) sit atop the Atlantic as they are coming off a 121-103 home victory over the Clippers on Super Bowl Sunday. Toronto dropped 42 second quarter points to open up a 14-point halftime lead, while Kawhi Leonard led the Raptors with 18 points to help Toronto improve to 22-5 at home.

The 76ers (34-19 SU, 25-28 ATS) return home from a 2-2 west coast swing, with the major highlight coming last Thursday as Philadelphia snapped Golden State’s 11-game winning streak, 113-104 as eight-point underdogs. However, Philadelphia’s trip ended on a sour note as the Sixers were tripped up at Sacramento on Saturday, 115-108 as three-point favorites. Jimmy Butler and Joel Embiid each scored 29 points for Philadelphia, but Ben Simmons was the only other 76er to post double-figures (22 points) as the Sixers cashed their fifth UNDER in the past six road games.

The home team has dominated the series this season as all three wins have come by double-digits. Toronto ripped Philadelphia, 129-112 in late October behind Leonard’s 31 points, while the Raptors topped the 76ers by 11 in December. Three weeks later, the 76ers broke through with a 126-101 blowout at Wells Fargo Center as Leonard sat out on the second end of a back-to-back set. The Raptors have struggled as an underdog recently by posting a 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS mark when receiving points since winning at Golden State in mid-December.

                            Lighten the Load

After taking Saturday night’s loss off to the Warriors due to “load maintenance,” LeBron James is expected to return to the Lakers’ (27-26 SU, 23-28-2 ATS) lineup tonight as they continue a six-game road trip at Indiana. James was a late scratch in Saturday’s primetime showdown with the defending champions as the Lakers barely covered as 14 ½-point underdogs in a 115-101 setback at Golden State. James is suiting up for his game outside of California since December 18 at Brooklyn, as the Lakers own an impressive 7-2 ATS mark in their last nine road games.

The Pacers (34-19 SU, 26-27 ATS) began their four-game road trip with a pair of losses at Washington and Orlando, but ended on a solid note by winning at Miami and New Orleans. Indiana withstood a late Pelicans’ rally on Monday, but held on for a 109-107 win as 3 ½-point favorites. Darren Collison paced Indiana with 22 points, but the Pacers slipped to 1-6 ATS the last seven games overall.

Indiana won and covered in its first three opportunities as a home underdog this season before getting humbled by Golden State as seven-point ‘dogs, 132-100 in late January. The Lakers jumped out to a 23-point lead against the Pacers earlier this season at Staples Center, as L.A. held off Indiana, 104-96 to cash as five-point favorites in November. The Pacers have captured each of the past five home matchups with the Lakers since 2014, while Indiana owns a 4-1 ATS mark in this span.

                            Heat Wrecked

Home is not where the heart is for the Heat (24-27 SU, 26-25 ATS), who dropped all three games at American Airlines Arena last week. Two losses came by double-digits to Chicago and Oklahoma City, while falling to Indiana, 95-88 on Saturday to fall to 0-4 SU/ATS the last four home contests. Miami embarks on a six-game road swing that starts in Portland as the Heat outlasted the Blazers at the AAA in late October, 120-111 to end a five-game skid in the series.

The Blazers (32-20 SU, 29-23 ATS) extended their home winning streak to eight games in a 132-105 blowout of the Jazz last Wednesday. However, Portland hasn’t played in six days as the Blazers try to avoid a look-ahead spot with the Spurs invading the Moda Center on Thursday. The Blazers have won 10 consecutive home games against Eastern Conference opponents since losing to the Wizards in overtime in October.

                            Home Buzz

The Hornets (26-26 SU, 27-25 ATS) are looking to bust above the .500 mark for the first time since December 21 as Charlotte is the leader of the Southeast division heading into tonight’s action. Since a 1-5 start to begin 2019, the Hornets have buzzed back by winning seven of 10 games, including all five games at Spectrum Center. Granted, four of the five victories have come against teams with losing records, but the Hornets own the fifth-most home wins in the Eastern Conference with 19, while posting a 7-1 ATS record in their last eight home contests as a single-digit favorite.

The Clippers (29-25 SU, 29-25 ATS) erased a 25-point deficit in Saturday’s epic comeback triumph at Detroit, but fell short the next afternoon in an 18-point setback at Toronto. Los Angeles continues its six-game trip tonight in Charlotte looking to pull off the season sweep of the Hornets. The Clippers slammed the Hornets, 128-109 in early January to cash as 6 ½-point favorites, while L.A. improved to 8-1 in the past nine meetings with Charlotte since 2014.

                            Magic Traction

Eight times this season, Orlando (22-31 SU, 27-25-1 ATS) has won consecutive games. However, the Magic have picked up three straight wins only once, as Orlando tries to accomplish that feat again after beating Indiana and Brooklyn at home. The opening loss on their homestand came to Oklahoma City last Tuesday, 126-117 as Paul George scored 31 of his 37 points in the opening half.

The Thunder (33-19 SU, 29-23 ATS) saw their seven-game winning streak end in Sunday’s 134-129 defeat at Boston as 3 ½-point underdogs. OKC cashed the OVER for the sixth time in the last seven games, while George continued his red-hot scoring season by putting up 37 points. Since getting tripped up by Washington and Minnesota at home as heavy favorites in early January, the Thunder have won four of their past five at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

Orlando has covered in each of its past four visits to Oklahoma City, while not losing by more than seven points in three of those losses. Since going on an 0-7 ATS run as a road underdog from December 10 through January 9, the Magic has cashed in their last three in this role, including as an 8 ½-point ‘dog at Houston in a 103-98 setback on January 27.
