        Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Odds to win NEXT YEAR’s NBA title:

        — Golden State 5-4

        — Rockets, 76ers 7-2

        — Celtics 8-1

        — Heat, Lakers 20-1

        — Spurs 25-1

        — Cavaliers 30-1— Oddsmakers obviously think Lebron is leaving town

        **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend…….

        13) Somewhere in this great country of ours Saturday night, someone bet the under on the Cubs-Mets game; deGrom vs Montgomery was the pitching matchup.

Game was 1-1 after the 13th inning; total was 7.5. Under looked like a winner.

Then the Cubs scored six runs in the 14th inning. Gambling is difficult.

        12) Since start of 2016 season, most starts of 5+ innings with one or fewer runs allowed:
        Lester 36, Verlander 32, Scherzer 31, deGrom 29

        11) AL East:
        Boston
New York 1 GB— Have played six fewer games than the Red Sox.

        10) AL Central
Cleveland— No Wild Cards from this division
        Detroit 2.5 GB
        Minnesota 3.5

        9) AL West
Seattle— Second place in this division is a probable Wild Card
        Houston 1 GB
        Angels 5.5
        A’s 6.5— A’s are 10-19 vs division rivals, 21-10 against everyone else.

        8) NL East
        Braves
Nationals 1.5 GB— Daniel Murphy is expected back soon.
        Phillies 3

Phillies are the first team EVER to score only one run in a three-game series, with the only run scoring on a home run by a pitcher.

        7) NL Central
Brewers— They’re 12-14 vs division rivals, 25-9 vs everyone else.
        Cubs 2
        Cardinals 3.5
        Pirates 6.5

        6) NL West
Diamondbacks— Interesting race, but all these teams are struggling
        Rockies 1.5 GB
Dodgers 2.5— Dodgers can buy talent (Manny Machado??) at trade deadline
        Giants 2.5
        Padres 5.5

        5) In 12 of Seattle’s last 16 home games, the winning run scored after the 6th inning. Mariners are 6-0 in extra inning games this year, as they compete for a playoff spot.

        4) Over is 13-2 in Oakland’s last fifteen series openers; not sure why. A’s last eight home series openers all went over, even though the A’s don’t hit nearly as well at home.

        3) Diamondbacks have been held to six or fewer hits in 30 of their first 58 games; no one else has more than 25 such games.

Last time a team went a whole season with more games of six of fewer hits than games with 7+ hits? The 1910 White Sox.

        2) Braves 4, Nationals 2— Charlie Culbertson hit a walk-off tater for his 8th career home run; four of his eight career homers have been walk-off homers.

1— Late Friday night in Denver, according to police, an FBI agent did a back flip in a club, dropped his gun and accidentally shot someone.

        Oy.

          Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the US Open golf tournament next week:

          9-1— Dustin Johnson

          10-1- -Rory McIlroy

          12-1— Jordan Spieth

          14-1— Eldrick Woods

          15-1— Jason Day, Justin Thomas

18-1— Jon Rahm, Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler

          **********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……

          13) Crossed paths last week with a group of four families and their 8-10 year old kids who were visiting from California, and were off to a trip to Cooperstown later that day.

I always wonder when people come so far to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame, what they think of it once their trip is over. Cooperstown is in the middle of nowhere, 72 miles from Albany- if you like trees and lakes, you’ll enjoy the drive there. Very rural.

Baseball Hall of Fame itself is tremendous, and Sal’s Pizza across the street is very good.

          12) Legalized sports betting starts today in Delaware; West Virginia hopes to have sports betting up and running by the start of football season. New Jersey is supposed to start sometime this month. New York? Who the bleep knows.

          11) Danny Hurley is the new basketball coach at UConn; he threw out the first ball at the Mets’ game Sunday. This will take some getting used to.

How good a job is UConn? Not a lot of great players in-state, and the fanbase was spoiled by Jim Calhoun, not to mention how often the women’s team wins.

          10) Why does the baseball Wild Card exist? The ’93 San Francisco Giants went 103-59, and didn’t make the playoffs— how about that?

Wild Cards started in baseball in ’95, but oddly, the Giants had losing seasons is 1994-96, after winning 103 games in ’93. They’ve made up for all that this decade.

          9) Oakland A’s drafted Oklahoma CF Skyler Murray with the #9 pick in the baseball draft; the thing here is, Murray is also penciled in to be the Sooners’ QB this fall. He is 5-10, very short for a potential NFL QB, but Brees, Tarkenton, Jurgensen, Russell Wilson are all under 6-feet tall.

By way of information, the No. 9 pick in last year’s baseball draft got a $4M signing bonus.

We’ll see how that works out, but would he leave Oklahoma now for $4-5M?

          8) Washington Nationals lost P Jeremy Hellickson (hamstring) after four pitches Sunday; he had been doing great work for Washington. Hamsrings generally take a while to heal.

          7) On May 1, Colorado Rockies were 30-1 to win the World Series; on June 1, they were 22-1.

          6) Part of the reason why? Arizona Diamondbacks hit .193 as a team in May.

          5) Have you seen David Letterman lately? He has this big, bushy white beard that makes him look like Rutherford B Hayes. First time I saw him with the beard, I didn’t recognize him.

          4) Philadelphia Eagles went for it on 4th down 29 times last year, most in the NFL.

          3) Tampa Bay’s Nate Snell tied an American League record Sunday when he struck out the first seven Mariners he faced in Seattle.

          2) ESPN wants to televise New York-Toronto game on Sunday Night Baseball July 8, but New York has a doubleheader in Baltimore the next day- they want Sunday’s game to be a day game.

The two sides, MLB and the union are negotiating to reach a compromise, but if one isn’t found, New York might boycott dealing with ESPN personnel.

Dodgers-Angels, Braves-Brewers or Cardinals-Giants would be alternative games to show.

          1) Baseball draft is weird, since it falls during the college baseball national tournament. How does it affect guys who are still playing? Lot of money on the line for these high draft picks, and the rookie leagues start on June 15th.

              WNBA Betting Recap - 5/28-6/3
              June 5, 2018

League Betting Notes (Monday, May 28 through Sunday, June 3)

-- Favorites went 9-5 straight up (SU)
-- Favorites went 7-6-1 against the spread (ATS)
-- Home teams posted a 8-6 SU record
-- Road teams posted a 7-6-1 ATS record
              -- The 'over' went 8-6

              Team Betting Notes

-- It was a memorable week for Las Vegas (1-5), as they were able to pick up the first regular season victory in franchise history. The Aces scored an 85-73 victory over Washington (5-3) on June 1 in Nevada. The loss snapped a 4-0 ATS run for the Mystics, so it was rather surprising. The 'under' has cashed in three of the past four for Washington, too.

-- Connecticut (5-0) continues its early-season assault on the rest of the WNBA, covering four of their five outings so far. That includes a perfect 2-0 ATS through two road contests. The four-game road odyssey continues with stops in Atlanta (2-3) and New York (2-2) this week.

-- The Dream has alternated losses and wins through their five outings, doing the same against the spread, too. If the trend continues, a win and cover against the visiting Sun on Tuesday will be coming. One thing that isn't erratic about Atlanta is their work against the total, as the 'under' has hit in four in a row.

-- After two setbacks to open the new season the Liberty has won each of their past two. They have also covered three in a row, while the 'over' is 3-1 on the young campaign.

-- Chicago (3-3) slapped the brakes on a three-game losing streak, edging the Aces 95-90 on Sunday. The Sky has posted 80 or more points in four of six outings, while allowing at least 76 points in the past five. The 'over' has hit in three in a row for Chicago.

-- Indiana (0-6) is still searching for its first victory of the season. Defense has been the issue for the Fever, as they have allowed 82 or more points in all six contests. The 'over' has connected in four of their past five outings.

-- Like Atlanta above, Dallas (3-3) has alternated losses and wins through their six battles to date. Defense has been an issue for the Wings, as they have yielded at least 76 points in all but one of their four outings, including 92.0 PPG allowed over the past two games. The 'over' has hit in four of their contests. Dallas is on an impressive 4-1 ATS run over the past five heading into the new week.

-- Minnesota (2-5) is experiencing some uncharacteristic struggles, as they're in the midst of a four-game losing streak. They had been favorites in their first six outings, but they were an underdog for their most recent setback. Fade Minnesota if you want to cash big, as the Lynx are 0-7 ATS so far this season. The 'under' is also an impressive 5-2.

-- Los Angeles (4-1) is off to a solid start, with only a setback to the Sun back on May 24. They're also 4-1 ATS so far.

-- Seattle (5-2) had its five-game winning streak snapped in Big D, losing 94-90 against the Wings. The Storm have alternated non-covers and covers in each of their seven games. The 'over' has hit in six of their seven games so far this season.

Jordin Canada and Sue Bird's bond began before Seattle
                June 5, 2018

Right before her senior season at UCLA, Jordin Canada was seeking advice on how to be a better point guard. Who better to turn to than Sue Bird?

The two got in touch and had a long phone conversation where Bird imparted some of her wisdom to Canada. Fast-forward eight months, and Bird is still offering advice to Canada, now as a teammate with the Storm after Seattle drafted her with the fifth pick in April.

''It's an honor being able to learn from the best,'' Canada said. ''It's great for me. I see her in practice and games and what she does, her confidence, the way she leads. It's unbelievable to experience that first-hand.''

Bird remembers the conversation last year with Canada and was flattered that the young guard reached out.

''It's a huge compliment when that happens,'' Bird said. ''They are doing it for a reason. I didn't know Jordin personally, but had seen her play a few times.''

Now Bird has gotten the chance to see Canada up close for the last month.

''Speed is what sticks out right away,'' Bird said of her young protege. ''It's one thing to see it on TV, but when you're experiencing it in person, it's incredible. It's not just the speed though, it's her ability to break defenses down. It's very important to have someone who can do that.''

Canada was one of the top point guards in college last year, and learning from a future Hall of Famer and the league's all-time assist leader has been great.

''I feel like I'm learning a lot from her in practices and shootarounds,'' Canada said. ''She is always talking to me in games making sure I understand different terminology.''

She got her first start for the Storm against Dallas on Saturday as Bird rested. The rookie had nine points, nine assists and five steals in a loss. Bird was constantly in her ear that game.

''Once this franchise started to rebuild a couple years ago, I always felt like this is my opportunity to help them and pass down as much knowledge as I can,'' Bird said. ''Prep them to take over and take this franchise and keep it going. That vibe has trickled on to Jordin.''

One thing that has stuck with Bird was that after they chatted, Canada wrote her a thank you note for talking to her. A rare sweet gesture in this day of texts and tweets.

''It was very touching she took the time to recognize that to thank me,'' Bird said. ''She didn't have to do that.''

Angel McCoughtry made a long jumper with 37.7 seconds remaining to extend Atlanta's lead to 76-69. After Shekinna Stricklen sank a 3-pointer at the other end, the Dream hit four straight free throws to seal it.

McCoughtry finished with 11 points for Atlanta (3-3), which is 16-4 all-time against Connecticut at home. Renee Montgomery chipped in with 12 points.

Alyssa Thomas had 19 points, 17 rebounds and six assists for Connecticut (5-1), which was off to its best start in franchise history. Chiney Ogwumike added 12 points and nine boards, Alex Bentley also scored 12 and Courtney Williams had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Connecticut, which entered scoring 100-plus points in three of its first five games, was held to 36.6 percent shooting from the floor.

                    MERCURY 80, LIBERTY 74

NEW YORK (AP) - Brittney Griner scored 26 points and Diana Taurasi had 21 to help the Mercury beat the Liberty in a school-day game at Madison Square Garden.

This was one of only two games at MSG this season, with the Liberty playing the rest of their home schedule in suburban Westchester County.

Phoenix (5-3) led by five at halftime and the second half was a back-and-forth affair, with neither team able to take a bigger lead until the closing minutes.

Marissa Coleman hit a 3-pointer with 3:23 left to give New York a 74-73 advantage. Those were the Liberty's last points.

DeWanna Bonner hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:15 left to give Phoenix a two-point advantage. The teams traded misses before Griner connected on a turnaround jumper with 39.8 seconds left that made it 78-74 Phoenix. Taurasi added two free throws for the final margin.

Tina Charles scored 25 points and Bria Hartley had 18 to lead the Liberty (2-3).

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                        13) Movie recommendation: I told you about the book last summer, but Molly’s Game the movie was even better. Very good.

Story deals with a young woman runs celebrity poker game in Los Angeles and New York City; she eventually gets in trouble with the law when she begins raking the pot, which is what makes it illegal. Having members of the Russian mob playing in her games complicates things.

Anyway, very good movie. Worth your time to watch it.

                        12) Jake Arrieta’s complaints with the Phillies’ defensive shifts over the weekend confirmed what I had suspected; when the shifting doesn’t work, it drives some pitchers nuts.

                        11) Sporting News ranked all 32 NFL starting QB’s; 19th for Cam Newton seems very low- 30th for Eli Manning seems ridiculously low.

                        10) Max Scherzer got three strikeouts on nine pitches in the 6th inning vs Tampa Bay Tuesday, just the 92nd time this has happened in major league history.

                        9) Good trivia, part 1; we talked yesterday about the A’s drafting Kyler Murray, the Oklahoma QB/CF. His dad and uncle were also outstanding athletes.

Turns out his uncle Calvin was the batter when Randy Johnson hit that bird with a pitched ball in a spring training game and the poor bird exploded in mid-air.

                        8) Good trivia, part 2: When Jesse Owens won the gold medal in the 200-meter sprint in the 1936 Olympics, Mack Robinson won the silver medal- they both broke the previous Olympic record.

Mack Robinson was Jackie Robinson’s older brother.

                        7) Vince McMahon’s XFL hired Oliver Luck (Andrew Luck’s dad) as Commissioner/CEO. The elder Luck was also once President of NFL Europe and AD at West Virginia- he was a backup QB for the Houston Oilers back in the day.

XFL starts in 2020; the AAF will also be a spring football league— it starts next year.

                        6) Nebraska Cornhuskers signed dual-threat QB Luke McCaffery, the youngest son of former NFL WR Ed McCaffery, and brother of Panthers’ RB Christian McCaffery.

                        5) A horse named Gronkowski is 12-1 to win the Belmont Stakes Saturday on Long Island.

                        4) When a team is rebuilding like the Kansas City Royals are, they tend to draft more college players, since they’re obviously older than high school kids and generally take less time to get to the major leagues. The Royals need help.

First 11 players the Royals drafted this week are college players.

                        3) A government contractor was taken into custody at a Secret Service checkpoint at the White House when he showed up for work. He was wanted for attempted murder. Yikes.

                        2) Get well soon to New Jersey Giants’ GM Dave Gettleman, who diagnosed with lymphoma this week. Hope he is feeling better soon.

                        1) RIP CM Newton, 88, former basketball coach at both Vanderbilt/Alabama, who was later the AD at Kentucky. He was the President of USA Basketball from 1992-96. RIP, sir.

                          Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

These were some prop bets on Wednesday’s NBA game:

                          — Largest lead for either team: 17 points— under

                          — 3-pointers made by both teams: 23.5— under

                          — Points scored by Kevin Durant: 29.5— over

                          — Points scored by Klay Thompson: 19— under

                          — Points scored by Golden State: 110.5— under

                          — Points scored by Cleveland: 106— under

                          **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

                          13) Can’t be lot of fun for these major league managers of losing teams when they face the media day after day when they’re losing most of their games. Watching Mickey Callaway of the Mets, who is a rookie manager— you try to stay as positive as possible in your press conferences, but losing sucks- Mets have scored two runs in their last 42 innings.

                          12) NBA teams that fall behind 2-0 in playoff series have won only 20 of those 301 series.

Lebron James’ teams have fallen behind 2-0 in seven series, but won three of them.

                          11) List of pitchers who struck out the side on nine pitches more than once in their career: Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, Max Scherzer.

Scherzer is obviously still active; the other four are all in the Hall of Fame.

                          10) During OTA’s this week, new Chicago Bears’ coach Matt Nagy showed his team the JR Smith brain cramp from Game 1 of the NBA Finals as a teaching moment for the importance of proper clock management.

                          9) Sounds like Michigan basketball coach John Beilein netted himself roughly a $500K annual raise from the Wolverines after his flirtation with the NBA’s Detroit Pistons.

                          8) On the first day of legal sports betting in Delaware, $322,135 was wagered. The governor of Delaware made the first bet, putting $10 on the Phillies (+$190) to win, and they did win.

                          7) US Open golf tournament is next week on Long Island; Eldrick Woods will be staying on his 155-foot, $20 million yacht that is docked at the Montauk Yacht Club. Shinnecock CC where the Open will be held is in the town of Southampton, about an hour from the yacht club.

                          6) With the US Open next week, there are only nine players out of the world’s top 50 in the Memphis Open this week,

                          5) In 46 career games vs Texas, A’s OF Khris Davis has 47 RBI.

                          4) JD Martinez hit his 20th home run Tuesday; last year, the first Boston player to reach 20 home runs did so on August 29.

                          3) Cardinals pitching prospect Alex Reyes will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery to re-attach a tendon in his lat.

Angels’ SS Andrelton Simmons goes on the DL with an ankle injury.

Diamondbacks acquired OF Jon Jay from the Royals in exchange for pitchers Gabe Speier, Elvis Luciano.

                          2) John Calipari’s in-laws have been married for 65 years. Wow, good for them.

                          1) Reds lost 9-6 Tuesday, despite getting 17 hits; it was the first time they got 17 hits in a 9-inning game and lost since September, 1984 against San Diego.

                                June 7, 2018

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) Shekinna Stricklen had a four-point play at the buzzer to give the Connecticut Sun an 88-86 victory over the New York Liberty on Thursday night.

Stricklen caught the ball on the wing off a pass from Jasmine Thomas, hit the shot and was fouled as time expired. After a brief review by the officials, the basket was ruled good. Stricklen shot the free throw with no time on the clock.

The Sun (6-1) trailed by 13 at the half and took their first lead since early in the game on Thomas' layup midway through the fourth quarter. Thomas had left the game a few minutes earlier when she went down hard after committing a foul and grabbed her knee. She was on the sideline for a few minutes being looked at by the Sun's training staff before returning.

The teams traded the lead over the final few minutes before Marissa Coleman's driving layup with 29.7 seconds left gave New York the lead an 85-84 advantage. After a few misses by Connecticut, Bria Hartley was fouled and she made one of two free throws with 5.8 seconds left setting up the exciting finish.

Thomas led the Sun with 19 points.

Tina Charles had 24 points and nine rebounds for the Liberty (2-4).
