  • NBA Betting Roadmap: Hayward who?
    Al McMordie

Through the NBA season's first three weeks, there are several surprises. Out East, Stan Van Gundy's Detroit Pistons and Frank Vogel's Orlando Magic are in second and third place, respectively, while Cleveland is 4-6 and tied for 11th place with the Nets and Heat. While in the West, the big surprise is the Memphis Grizzlies sitting in a tie for 4th place, with a 6-4 record. Let's look at the week ahead in the NBA.

    Spread Watch

Who needs Gordon Hayward? That might be the thought of Boston fans, as the Celtics have won nine straight games after starting the season 0-2. They had also covered eight straight, before losing against the spread on Monday night in Atlanta.

For the season, the Celtics are second (behind the Warriors) in point differential (+9.1) and second (behind the 76ers) in ATS win percentage (.818).

This week, Boston will host the Lakers, Hornets and Raptors, so it will have an excellent opportunity to stretch its win streak to 12. But the fact the Celtics lost ATS to Atlanta in their last game is, for me, a huge "sell" signal.

Indeed, NBA teams that finally lose ATS, after covering their previous seven (or more) games in a row, typically follow up that initial ATS defeat with a second straight ATS defeat and especially if they're playing at home (41-76-3 ATS since 1990). Grab the points with the Lakers on Tuesday.

    Total Watch

After Week 2 in the NBA saw a preponderance of Unders it was a different story last week, as games went Over the total to a tune of 31-22-1. No team contributed more to this trend than Mike D'Antoni's Houston Rockets, who sailed Over the total in all four of their games.

Their last game, on Sunday, was also their most impressive (and highest scoring) win of the season, as they blew out Utah, 137-110, as a 6.5-point favorite. Will the Rockets' high-octane offense continue to light up the scoreboard this week?

Houston will be well-rested when it plays its next game, on Thursday, vs. LeBron James' Cavaliers (before finishing the week with back-to-back games vs. Memphis and Indiana). That Saturday game versus Memphis has all the earmarks of a low-scoring game.

Indeed, the Grizzlies and Rockets have played twice already this season. And not only did Memphis win both games, but it also held the Rockets to their two lowest regular-season point totals (89 and 90) in D'Antoni's 93 games as head coach. Not surprisingly, both of those games went Under the total (by 11 and 25.5 points). Look for Saturday's game to be relatively low-scoring, as well.

    Injury Watch

The Los Angeles Clippers got their season off to a promising 4-0 SU/ATS start and were the league's final, remaining undefeated team. But the injury bug bit the Clippers, as point guard Milos Teodosic injured his ankle and is out indefinitely, while forward Danilo Gallinari bruised his hip and exited Los Angeles' last game, a loss to the Miami Heat.

The Clippers are now just 5-4 SU/ATS and both players will miss Tuesday's game at San Antonio (another injury-riddled club). After playing the Spurs, the Clippers will continue their road trip with games at Oklahoma City and New Orleans.

Saturday's game at the Pelicans could be particularly troublesome for the Clippers if they remain short-handed, since they'll be playing without rest. New Orleans is also 25-12 ATS its last 37 games versus Los Angeles, including 14-4 ATS at home. Take the Pelicans.

    Schedule Watch

Last season, the NBA made a concerted effort to reduce the number of times a team had to play back-to-back games, or several games within a relatively short time-frame. But there are still occasions when a team must play three games in four nights, or five games in seven nights.

Dating back to last season, NBA teams that were saddled with playing five games in seven nights have lost that 5th game (straight-up) 10 times in a row (4-6 ATS).

This Saturday, the Phoenix Suns will be in that unenviable scheduling situation when they host the Timberwolves. To make matters worse, Phoenix will be coming off a Friday night game versus Orlando, while Minnesota will have had the previous two days off.

Since 1990, NBA teams are a wallet-busting 74-107 ATS at home when playing their fifth game in seven days against an opponent which didn't play the previous two days. Take the Timberwolves.

    • Wednesday's Tip Sheet
      November 8, 2017

Game of the Night: Wolves at Warriors – 10:35 PM EST

Minnesota (7-3 SU, 5-4-1 ATS) is finally coming around to become a legitimate playoff team in the Western Conference following a 13-year postseason drought. The Wolves own a solid 7-1 record when guard Jimmy Butler is in the lineup, while coming off five consecutive victories. Minnesota cruised past Dallas and Charlotte at home by double-digits, while limiting three straight opponents to below 100 points. Tom Thibodeau’s squad heads out west for a three-game road swing that extends to Phoenix on Saturday and Utah on Monday.

Golden State (8-3, 5-6 ATS) is fresh off four blowouts following a home loss to Detroit on October 29. The Warriors rolled past the Heat on Monday, 97-80 to cash as 14 ½-point favorites in spite of shooting 37% from the floor. Steve Kerr’s club began the season with a dreadful 1-6 ATS record, but has covered in each of their last four victories, although only one of those ATS covers came as a double-digit favorite.

Last season, the Warriors captured three of four meetings from the Wolves, but Minnesota managed a 3-0-1 ATS record in the series. Minnesota has compiled an incredible 8-1-1 ATS mark in the past 10 matchups with Golden State since 2014, including a 4-0-1 ATS ledger in its past five visits to Oracle Arena. Minnesota forward Andrew Wiggins was limited to 16 points in the first meeting last season, but scored 25, 24, and 24 points in the final three matchups with Golden State.

      New Bird vs. Magic?

The Lakers/Celtics rivalry from the 1980’s is long gone although these teams met in the NBA Finals are recently as 2010. Young stars for each of these legendary franchises have taken over with Boston’s Kyrie Irving squaring off Los Angeles rookie Lonzo Ball at TD Garden for the first time. Boston (9-2 SU, 9-2 ATS) lost its first two games of the season before ripping off nine consecutive victories. The Celtics failed to cover in their last contest on Monday in a three-point win at Atlanta, snapping an eight-game ATS hot streak.

Los Angeles (5-5 SU, 6-4 ATS) leaves the west coast for the first time this season, trying to build off back-to-back home wins over Brooklyn and Memphis. The Lakers are currently on a 4-0 ATS hot streak, which includes a cover in their last road game, a 113-110 setback at Portland as 6 ½-point underdogs. Ball has struggled to score in his rookie campaign as he reached double-figures only twice, while scoring a combined 15 points in his past three games.

The Lakers have seen success in their last few visits to Beantown from an ATS perspective by covering in the past two trips to Boston as double-digit underdogs, including a 112-104 victory in 2015.

      Addition by Subtraction

Suddenly the Knicks (6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS) look like a new team since dealing Carmelo Anthony to the Thunder prior to the season. New York has overcome an 0-3 start by winning six of its last seven games, including pulling off another epic second half comeback in Tuesday’s 118-113 home triumph over Charlotte as short underdogs. Kristaps Porzingis led the rally for New York by scoring 28 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while former OKC sharpshooter Doug McDermott put up 20 points off the bench on 7-of-8 shooting.

The Knicks head to Orlando with no rest to take on the surprising Magic (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS). Orlando looks to finish off its homestand with a victory after losing to Chicago and Boston by double-digits. The Magic thrived offensively through their first eight games by topping the 113-point mark seven times, but Orlando has taken a step back of late by putting up 83 and 88 in the last two contests. Last season, the Knicks claimed three of four meetings from the Magic, including a pair of victories in central Florida.

      All Systems Go

Was this finally the season that Stan Van Gundy’s Pistons would break out and return to the playoffs in the East? Detroit (7-3 SU, 7-2-1 ATS) is one of the top teams from an ATS perspective, while owning a 3-1-1 ATS mark at brand new Little Caesars Arena. The Pistons continue a five-game homestand with the Pacers after beating the Bucks and Kings on a back-to-back set last weekend. Detroit has plenty to play for against an Indiana squad that swept the Pistons last season, while limiting the Pistons to 98 points or less three times.

Indiana (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) continues to ride a roller-coaster this season, winning three straight with victories over Cleveland and San Antonio in a four-day span, but now riding a three-game skid. The most recent loss came at home to New Orleans on Tuesday, 117-112, as all three teams the Pacers have lost to in this stretch have been on fire of late (Pelicans, Knicks, 76ers).

      Fire Starters

The Heat and Suns will look to keep the building hot in Phoenix when they meet up. Miami (4-6 SU, 2-6-2 ATS) continues a six-game road trip as the Heat have posted a 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS record so far. The Heat dropped a one-point decision at Denver last Friday, but bounced back by holding off the Clippers on Sunday, 104-101. Miami’s defense performed well on Monday, but its offense was non-existent in a 97-80 loss at Golden State as the Heat are riding a four-game UNDER streak.

The Suns (4-7 SU, 5-6 ATS) finally moved on from Eric Bledsoe as the disgruntled guard was dealt to Milwaukee on Tuesday. Phoenix heated up following the firing of head coach Earl Watson by going 4-1 SU and 5-0 ATS from October 23 through November 1, but have gone backwards of late by posting an 0-3 SU/ATS the last three games. The Suns lost eight straight meetings with the Heat from 2012 through 2016, but split a pair of matchups last season, including a 99-90 home victory as five-point favorites.

        • NBA roundup: Celtics extend win streak to 10
          November 8, 2017

BOSTON -- Aron Baynes matched his career high with 21 points and the Boston Celtics won their 10th straight game, holding off the Los Angeles Lakers 107-96 on Wednesday night.

The Celtics played the entire game without Al Horford (concussion) and the second half without rookie Jayson Tatum (ankle) and built a 21-point lead before the Lakers battled back. Los Angeles got as close as two with 5:43 left in the third quarter, but Boston grew the lead back to double digits.

Kyrie Irving overcame a poor shooting night with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Celtics. Brandon Ingram and Jordan Clarkson had 18 points apiece and Julius Randle added 16 points and 12 rebounds for Boston.

          Warriors 125, Timberwolves 101

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Relying on its depth with All-Star forward Kevin Durant unavailable, Golden State put away Minnesota.

Minnesota entered with five consecutive wins, but the streak ended with Warriors guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson orchestrating a 44-26 third-quarter blitz.

Golden State won its fifth consecutive game. Thompson finished with 28 points, and Curry contributed 22 points and eight assists. Anthony Wiggins scored 17 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves.

          Magic 112, Knicks 99

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Nikola Vucevic scored 24 points and Evan Fournier had 23 to help Orlando halt a two-game losing streak with a win over New York.

The Knicks were without star forward Kristaps Porzingis, who is averaging 30 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks while shooting 51 percent from the field. Porzingis has a slight left ankle sprain and a bruised right elbow.

Tim Hardaway Jr. led NewYork with a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds.

          Pistons 114, Pacers 97

DETROIT -- Tobias Harris had 23 points and eight rebounds, and Detroit won for the sixth time in seven games, downing Indiana.

Reggie Jackson supplied 18 points, Avery Bradley had 14, and Andre Drummond contributed 14 points and 21 rebounds for the Pistons.

Victor Oladipo pumped in 21 points and Al Jefferson scored a season-high 19 points for the Pacers, who have lost four straight.

          Heat 126, Suns 115

PHOENIX -- Goran Dragic had 29 points and nine rebounds, and Dion Waiters scored five of his 16 points in the final 2:02 to give Miami a win over Phoenix.

Hassan Whitehead added 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Heat, who have won 17 of the last 19 meetings with the Suns, including nine of the last 10 at Talking Stick Resort Arena.

Phoenix's Devin Booker had nine of his game-high 30 points in the fourth quarter and cut a 16-point deficit to 112-106 on a 17-foot jumper with 2:53 left. However, Waiters followed a jumper with a 3-pointer with 1:33 left to make it 117-106, and the Heat locked down the game.

              **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

              d……

              13) Funny/not funny story of the day:

A Qatar Airways pilot was forced to make an emergency landing after a passenger found out her husband was cheating on her, leading to a violent reaction in midair; the woman reportedly used her sleeping husband’s finger to unlock his phone and discovered his cheating ways.

Officials say she started fighting with her husband, and also fought with crew members who tried to calm her down.

The flight was forced to land in India on the way to Bali; the woman and her family members were escorted off the plane there.

              Morals of this story:
              a) Don’t cheat on your spouse.
              b) Don’t leave your cellphone within reach of your spouse, especially if you’re cheating.

              12) Here is a breakdown of where major league ballplayers come from; players used here are from 2017 Opening Day rosters:
              4-year colleges: 43.8%
              International: 26.5%
              High school: 23.9%
              2-year colleges: 5.8%

              11) Coming into this year, in five NBA seasons, Detroit’s Andre Drummond was 683-1,793 (38.1%) on the foul line— really bad.

So far this year, Drummond is 30-47 (63.8%) on the charity stripe. I applaud his hard work in the offseason to strengthen his game, but after I added this, he went 0-7 on the line Wednesday against the Pacers, so it is an ongoing struggle.

              10) Sounds like Auburn basketball coach Bruce Pearl is on the way out; one of his assistants (Chuck Person) just got fired because of SneakerGate, and Pearl isn’t cooperating with the school’s internal investigation. That not good.

              9) I’m wondering how much Dak Prescott’s success in the NFL helps Mississippi State when they recruit young quarterbacks?

              8) DeShaun Watson’s injury figures to help the Cleveland Browns, since they have the Texans’ first-round draft pick in April. Now all Cleveland needs is someone in charge who has a clue on how to draft productive players.

              7) Vikings activated QB Teddy Bridgewater and put Sam Bradford on IR; both those guys’ contracts are up after the season, so Minnesota has some decisions to make, especially since they’re 6-2 and Case Keenum has been playing well for them.

              6) Our country does a census every ten years; so, you know, everyone knows how many people live here. Apparently the 2020 census will cost $15.6B, which seems a little excessive, but that is just me.

              5) Royals manager Ned Yost, 63, broke his pelvis recently when he fell while trying to fix a tree stand on his property in Georgia.

              4) Joe Buck has a good interview show called Undeniable, on the Audience Network (channel 500 on DirecTV); he has had an interesting cross-section of guests, but why in God’s name would he have Robert M Knight on as a guest? Knight is a bully, a creep; he was a really good coach at one time, but that time has passed. Now he adds nothing but negative energy.

              3) Minnesota’s Taj Gibson is the first NBA player EVER to wear number 67; turns out he went to PS 67 in Brooklyn. Used to be in high school, no digits above 5 could be on a uniform, to make it easier for refs to signal fouls to the scorer’s table.

              2) How many college basketball coaches spent time at Wednesday preaching to their teams about how they represent their families, their friends, their school whenever they go on a road trip?

Three UCLA kids are stuck in China now after they got caught shoplifting from a Louis Vuitton store. There is no “easy out” for athletes there— this is a foreign country that isn’t real fond of America- they have their own laws, and they’re tougher laws than we have here.

              1) Never thought I’d spend an hour in the middle of the night reading up on Chinese law, but that was me at 3am Tuesday night, trying to learn more about the situation the UCLA kids are in. I’m pretty sure Bill Walton is on the mike for UCLA-Georgia Tech game Friday night from China; he is pretty much unfiltered all the time, and he is obviously a UCLA alum, so this broadcast could be interesting, to say the least.

                • Inside the Paint - Thursday
                  November 9, 2017

The Oklahoma City franchise is playing in its 10th season this year since it relocated from Seattle. What’s amazing is that the team has made the playoffs in seven of nine seasons and that includes four trips to the Western Conference Finals and one ticket to the NBA Finals.

They made a name for themselves as contenders through the draft as the franchise hit the jackpot on three consecutive first-round draft picks from 2007 to 2009 in Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden.

As most of you know, Durant and Harden are no longer with the Thunder anymore but they still have the NBA's reigning Most Valuable Player in Westbrook.

Despite making the playoffs last summer, the club decided to take a shot this offseason with a “Big Three” approach by acquiring Paul George from the Pacers and Carmelo Anthony from the Knicks via trades.

A lot of pundits started labeling them as contenders again but that hasn’t been the case through the first 10 games of the season. Oklahoma City (4-6 straight up, 4-6 against the spread) hasn’t lived up to its expectations and the addition of George and Anthony have certainly tempered Westbrook’s game.

Last year he averaged a triple-double and while he’s not far from repeating that effort, his points per game has dipped from 31.6 to 20.1. It’s not surprising to see the drop but I assumed that George and Anthony would have to cater to the MVP, not the opposite.

All three can fill up the stat sheet on any given night, but none of them have shown consistent range from the outside and the Thunder’s 3-point shooting (34%) is ranked 21st in the league. The offense is ranked 23rd in scoring with 102.5 PPG and what’s really surprising is that they’re not getting to the free throw line (19.5) this season.

VegasInsider.com NBA expert Tony Mejia dropped Oklahoma City from 7th to 13th in his weekly Power Poll and he provided us with his thoughts on the club.

“Losing at the Kings was an eye-opener because it marked the first time where they fell against inferior competition. In the season-opening win over New York and a visit to overmatched Chicago, the Thunder won by a combined margin of 53 points. The rest of their games throughout this slow start have come against some quality opponents, mostly on the road. In that sense, there's still hope that this experiment will work out fine, but new roles aren't an excuse given an 0-3 record against Minnesota and Boston, teams that have also incorporated significant new pieces,” said Mejia.

Not only is Oklahoma City 1-4 versus teams that currently sit above .500 but they don’t own a win this season against the Western Conference (0-5).

Mejia added, “It's on Billy Donovan to work out an offensive system that will keep things simple enough for these guys to improvise, since it's no coincidence they've yet to break 100 points in November and seem to be laboring at a slower pace. There's no reason to believe a quick fix is coming given how challenging a back-to-back in Denver and then home for the Clippers will be. They'll get in the lab and work on some stuff with a pair of winnable home games against the woeful Mavs and Bulls coming up following the L.A. game, but I wouldn't give points again until they demonstrate consistency. The Sacramento loss was brutal. No one looks comfortable."

On Thursday, OKC will try to get right as it visits Denver (6-5 SU, 3-8 ATS). The Nuggets have been a mystery as well this season and if it wasn’t for facing seven teams (4-3) from the East early, who knows where this club would stand. Denver has only been underdogs twice this season and they certainly haven’t been a good investment when laying points.

The oddsmakers sent out OKC as a short road favorite (-1) and I would expect it to remain in that neighborhood. Denver is a respectable 4-2 at home and 0-1 when listed as a ‘dog.

Both clubs have a lot of new faces but it should be noted that Oklahoma City has won nine of the last 10 encounters in this series and that includes a run of five straight at the Pepsi Center. The two meetings at this venue last season were decided by a combined four points and many of you might recall Westbrook’s buzzer beater last April that finished off the Nuggets. The league MVP finished with 50 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists. The ‘over’ has gone 7-3 during this span.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.

Along with this late-night tip, we have four other quality matchups in the NBA on Thursday.

                  L.A. Lakers (5-6 SU, 6-5 ATS) at Washington (5-5 SU, 4-6 ATS)

This is a quick rematch as Washington (-10 ½) will look to avenge a 102-99 overtime loss to the Lakers on Oct. 25 as 5 ½-point road favorites. The Wizards will be catching Los Angeles on no rest after the Lakers dropped a 107-66 decision at Boston last night. L.A. has gone 2-1 both SU and ATS on zero days rest this season albeit the wins came versus the Phoenix and Brooklyn. The Lakers sit at 1-3 SU and 2-2 ATS on the road with the lone win coming versus the aforementioned Suns.

Washington has been a disappointment so far and while this certainly could be a ‘get-right’ game for them, I’d still be a little hesitant to lay the points. Make a note that the Hawks and Kings visit the Capital One Arena after this game, so head coach Scott Brooks and company have no excuses to get back on track.

The Wizards were a great team at home last season but that hasn’t been the case this year. They’ve burned bettors with a 2-3 SU and 0-5 ATS mark which includes a current skid of three straight. Plus, two of those losses came at home as double-digit favorites to the Suns on Nov. 1 and this past Wednesday to the Mavericks, who was winless on the road prior to that victory.

Also, Washington has gone 2-4 (3-3 ATS) versus the Western Conference this season and that includes a 1-3 mark as a favorite. The Lakers are 3-2 against foes from the East this season.

New Orleans (6-5 SU, 7-4 ATS) at Toronto (6-4 SU, 6-4 ATS)

Even though it won’t receive as much attention, this is a great non-conference matchup and a solid test for both clubs. Toronto opened as a 4 ½-point home favorite and most shops were holding 5 as of this morning.

New Orleans has started 5-2 on the road and it will look to finish off its current road trip with a 4-0 record after defeating the Mavs, Bulls and Pacers in the first three games. Wins are wins and I don’t want to dismiss New Orleans and its pair of talented big men (Davis, Cousins) but they’ve been a bully this season. The Pels are 0-5 against teams with winning records and 6-0 versus sub .500 clubs.

If you stick with that angle, Toronto should be your lean. Plus, the Raptors are a solid home team (3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS) and their overall record is pretty solid considering they already had to embark on a six-game road trip to the West Coast.

The Raptors have won four straight against the Pelicans and eight of the last 10 meetings. The pair will finish off their season series next Wednesday (Nov. 15) when they meet in New Orleans.

Cleveland (5-6 SU, 2-8-1 ATS) at Houston (8-3 SU, 6-5 ATS)

The Rockets opened as five-point favorites for this matchup while the total is 228. Houston enters this game on a roll, winning and covering three straight games while averaging 125 PPG during the streak. Meanwhile, Cleveland’s defense (113.9 PPG) remains a mess and they haven’t faced a team with the firepower comparable to Houston.

What’s strange about the Cavs is that they’ve gone 4-0 versus some of the top teams in the East (Celtics, Wizards, Bucks) but gave up a ton of points in losses to weaker teams in the Nets, Pacers and Hawks. Will Cleveland step up tonight? Outside of a come-from-behind road victory over Golden State in the opener, the Rockets really don’t have a signature win on their resume.

Last season, the pair split their regular season meetings with the home team winning both games as James Harden (39.5 PPG, 13 APG, 8.5 RPG) and LeBron James (24.5 PPG, 6.5 APG, 10 RPG) both nearly averaged a triple-double in those games. The Cavaliers were also helped immensely in those games with 30 PPG coming from Kyrie Irving.

Both teams bring 4-0 ‘over’ streaks into this contest.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 8:05 p.m. ET.

Philadelphia (6-4 SU, 8-2 ATS) at Sacramento (2-8 SU, 3-6-1 ATS)

After a bit of a rough start that saw Philadelphia go 1-4 SU and 3-2 ATS, the club has circled the wagons and ripped off five consecutive wins and covers. The oddsmakers continue to grade the club strong and the 76ers are laying a healthy price on the road (-6 ½) to the Kings tonight. Including the five wins in a row, Philly has covered seven straight and its gone 3-1 ATS in the role as a favorite this season.

Sacramento earned a solid 94-86 home win on Tuesday over Oklahoma City but it hasn’t won back-to-back games all season. The point-spread has only mattered in one game for Sac-Town. So when the Kings lose, they haven’t been competitive and that’s clearly attributed to an offense that is ranked last in scoring (93.8 PPG). Even when Philadelphia was tanking, it’s played rather well against Sacramento. The 76ers have gone 3-3 in the last six meetings and they covered all of those games (6-0 ATS).

                    • PG Ball: Shooting 'just in my head'
                      November 9, 2017

BOSTON (AP) Lonzo Ball is in a shooting slump, and he thinks he knows where the problem is.

''It's just in my head to be honest,'' Ball said. ''I know I can shoot the ball.''

The Lakers rookie had nine points in a 107-96 loss to Boston on Wednesday night, shooting just 4 of 15 from the field and 1 of 5 from the 3-point line. He entered the night shooting 29.9 percent from the floor in his first 10 NBA games, including 23 percent over his previous three contests.

This after he hit 55 percent from the field and 41 percent from 3-point range in his lone season at UCLA. Ball said he hasn't changed much from his approach in college.

''It's a long season. Just have to stay positive and keep putting in work,'' Ball said. ''It's going to show for itself. Obviously, right now I'm not making no shots. But I'm going to keep shooting.''

Ball said the Lakers haven't suggested tweaking his funky shooting mechanics, which include pushing the ball with his right hand from next to his left ear.

''I'm just trying to work on balance. That's what (coach) Luke (Walton) and Magic (Johnson) have been telling me,'' Ball said. ''That's the problem right now. Just balance.''

His ability to distribute the ball hasn't tailed off, at least. He had six assists Wednesday and has 22 over the last three games.

Los Angeles continues its four-game trip Thursday night at Washington.

                        • NBA roundup: Harden leads Rockets past Cavs
                          November 9, 2017

HOUSTON -- James Harden produced a triple-double as the Houston Rockets held on for a 117-113 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.

Harden tallied a game-high 35 points with 11 rebounds and 13 assists, feeding Clint Capela for an alley-oop dunk after forward P.J. Tucker dug out a loose ball on the floor late in the game. Harden snagged the pass from the seated Tucker, tossed the ball at the rim, and Capela finished through a foul for a four-point lead with 1:10 to play.

LeBron James led Cleveland with 33 points and seven assists, though he committed nine turnovers. Jeff Green scored 27 points on 11-of-15 shooting off the Cavaliers' bench.

Eric Gordon scored 20 points for Houston, and Capela added 19 points and 13 boards.

                          Nuggets 102, Thunder 94

DENVER -- Emmanuel Mudiay scored a season-high 21 points, Paul Millsap had 17 points, seven assists and tied a career high with six blocks, and Denver beat Oklahoma City.

Nikola Jokic contributed 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Will Barton and Mason Plumlee scored 13 each off the bench for the Nuggets, who earned their sixth win in eight games.

Carmelo Anthony led Oklahoma City with 28 points to tie a season high, and he moved into 24th place on the NBA all-time scoring list, passing Allen Iverson. Russell Westbrook had 13 points, seven rebounds and a season-low five assists for the Thunder, who have lost four straight.

                          Kings 109, 76ers 108

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Rookie De'Aaron Fox canned a top-of-the-key jumper with 14 seconds left to lift Sacramento over Philadelphia.

Fox, who finished with 11 points, made his shot on the Kings' final possession, after Willie-Cauley Stein blocked a put-back attempt by Philadelphia's Joel Embiid with 25.1 seconds left and the Kings down 108-107.

Zach Randolph scored a game-high 20 points for Sacramento, and rookie Justin Jackson added 19. Robert Covington scored 24 points and canned six 3-pointers, and Embiid added 22 points and 15 rebounds for the 76ers, whose five-game winning streak ended.

                          Wizards 111, Lakers 95

WASHINGTON -- John Wall scored 23 points and Bradley Beal had 22 as Washington gained some revenge and perhaps some needed positive momentum with a victory over Los Angeles.

Otto Porter contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Wizards, who had lost five of seven starting with a 102-99 road setback against the Lakers on Oct. 25. Washington also stopped a three-game home losing streak.

Brook Lopez and Jordan Crawford each had 15 points for the Lakers. Los Angeles' Lonzo Ball came close to his first career triple-double with 10 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, but he shot 3 of 12 from the field and 1 of 7 from 3-point range.

                          Raptors 122, Pelicans 118

TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan scored 33 points and added eight assists as Toronto defeated New Orleans.

Serge Ibaka added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Raptors, while Kyle Lowry had 18 points and seven assists. Toronto's Jonas Valanciunas contributed seven points and 13 rebounds.

Jrue Holiday had 34 points and 11 assists for the Pelicans, who had a three-game winning streak halted. DeMarcus Cousins added 20 points and 15 rebounds, and Anthony Davis had 18 points for New Orleans.
