Durant, Warriors pull away from Rockets

HOUSTON (AP) Kevin Durant scored 37 points and Klay Thompson added 28 to lead Golden State to a 119-106 win in the long-awaited showdown with the Houston Rockets in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals on Monday night.

Starting a playoff series on the road for the first time since 2014, the Warriors trailed by as many as 9 early, but had evened it up by halftime and used a big run at the beginning of the fourth quarter to pull away.

''We're in the Western Conference Finals they are going to come out with a lot of energy,'' Durant said. ''We're going to take that first punch and keep punching.''

Game 2 is Wednesday night in Houston.

Eric Gordon opened the final period with a 3-pointer to get the top-seeded Rockets within 4, but Thompson scored the first eight points of a 13-4 run to make it 100-87 with about eight minutes left.

Houston used a 9-3 spurt, where James Harden scored five, to cut the lead to 103-96 with less than five minutes to go. But Thompson struck again, hitting a wide open 3 to leave the Warriors ahead by 10 with four minutes left.

Harden scored 41 to lead the Rockets, who lost at home for the second time this postseason.

''You're not going to come in and just knock them out,'' Houston coach Mike D'Antoni said. ''There were too many times where we had mental lapses. We didn't switch properly, turned the ball over and missed too many layups. We need to do a better job of staying up mentally.''

Steph Curry added 18 for the Warriors, who are in the conference finals for a franchise-record fourth straight time. It's Houston's first trip since 2015 when Golden State won the series in five games.

The Warriors, who are the second seed in the West, opened a playoff series away from Oracle Arena for the first time since 2014 when they lost to the Los Angeles Clippers 4-3 in the opening round.

Houston struggled to slow down Durant all night, and things got even worse when Trevor Ariza picked up his fifth foul with about 10 minutes left in the third with Golden State up by 3. Durant made two baskets for the Warriors around one by Chris Paul that left the Warriors up 73-68 a couple of minutes later.

''He's one of the best scorers ever,'' D'Antoni said of Durant. ''I thought he was extremely good. But we can withstand that. We can't withstand turning the ball over and giving up so many wide open 3s.''

Gordon added a layup for Houston after that, but Golden State scored the next six points, with a 3-pointer from Thompson, to make it 79-70 with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the third.

Houston ended a scoring drought of more than two minutes with a dunk by Harden seconds later and the Warriors followed with another run, scoring six straight points to extend it to 85-72 with just more than two minutes left in the third.

The Rockets rediscovered their offense after that, scoring the next eight points, powered by 3s from Gordon and Gerald Green, to get within 85-80 with about a minute left in the quarter.

Durant added two free throws to close out the quarter and leave the Warriors up 87-80 entering the fourth.

''Houston, they never stop,'' Durant said. ''They are always in the game with 3-point shots. We try to get good shots every time down and defend on the other end.''

Warriors: Curry extended his NBA playoff record by making at least one 3-pointer in his 80th straight playoff game. ... Draymond Green received a technical early in the first quarter when he pushed Harden after a shot. ... Curry missed his first free throw of the playoffs in the third quarter after making all 19 attempts in the first two rounds.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Boston Celtics – Game 2

After obliterating the top seeded Toronto Raptors in the second round, the Cleveland Cavaliers appeared to leave their A-game back in that round as they were the ones who got blown out in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

Nothing could really go right for the Cavs from start to finish against a Boston team that's been disrespected and counted out in every series so far, but when is the time the majority of NBA fans/bettors begin to take this injury-riddled Celtics team for real?

Is it now after their big Game 1 win? Or do the Celtics still have to hold down the fort at home and then steal one on the road against Cleveland? Either way, Game 2 should present a few answers in that regard as the Cavs look to head home with the split, while Boston would love to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

Boston -1; Total set at 203

After LeBron and the Cavs (more-so LeBron), could do no wrong against the Raptors, Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals was a bit of a wake-up call for this team that had thought they shed their early 2017-18 reputation. It was then that the Cavs were known as by far the worst defensive team in the league, continually letting opponents gut them in the paint, let those opponents get (and hit) whatever shots they desired, and those teams did so knowing that if they could contain LeBron's supporting cast well enough, a W would be on the other side of things for them.

Cleveland had no choice but to go through a massive overhaul in mid-February to improve things, and while there were some signs of trouble against Indiana, all of those issues were completely forgotten about and glossed over with Cleveland's performance against Toronto.

But those old wounds were re-opened in Game 1 against Boston, as the Celtics scored 60 points in the paint (+22 for game), knocked down 51.2% of their shots overall, and had a +21-point advantage in three pointers made. It was all out disastrous on both ends for the Cavs in Game 1, and while LeBron did state that “he's not concerned” being down 0-1 in his post game presser, a repeat performance like that will have the entire organization wishing it was mid-February so they could overhaul the entire program again.

As bad as Game 1 was for Cleveland, the thing here as a bettor is that we shouldn't expect more of the same, at least to that degree. Yes, Boston's Brad Stevens is arguably the best coach in the league, but even all of his scheming isn't likely to hold the Cavs to just 36% shooting from the floor like they had in Game 1, and the 4-for-26 Cleveland shot from beyond the arc has nowhere to go but up.

Boston's defense has been pretty good at home throughout these playoffs, but Philly still managed to score an average of 105.33 points per game in Boston during last round, and without question Cleveland should be able to at least match that type of production.

Yet, it's Cleveland's defense (skill, scheme, and intensity) that have to have you concerned about backing the Cavaliers ATS or ML in Game 2, because really, the Cavs defense has been in the toilet for the better part of two years now. Cleveland's always had a tremendous amount of offensive talent during that time to negate most of their defensive flaws, but that's not the particular case this year in the sense that they simply can't run over everyone with their scoring.

All of that leads me to the total for Game 2, where a number of 203 is way too low for this game. LeBron's aggressiveness to force the action will increase ten-fold after he was quite passive in Game 1, and when some shots are hit from outside by his supporting cast, things will just naturally open up all over the floor for Cleveland. The Cavs scored at least 100 points after each playoff loss to Indiana in Round 1, and while there were no defeats suffered in Round 2, Cleveland still averaged 118.5 points per game against Toronto. Split the difference and we've got Cleveland landing somewhere close to 110 points in Game 2.

Meanwhile, Boston's defense at home may generate the headlines at times in the mainstream media, but in the playoffs, Celtics home games have been an 'over' machine. Prior to Game 1 of this series cashing the 'under,' Boston was 6-1 O/U at home in these playoffs and have eclipsed those totals in the six 'over's by an average of nearly 16 points (15.91) points per game.

Cleveland's by far the best offensive team of the bunch when they are connecting, yet, this number of 203 is the lowest total for any Celtics game in these playoffs since Game 7 against Milwaukee when the Game 7 stigma of 'unders' – because refs blow the whistle less not wanting to decide things so less free throws etc – played a part in making that number as low as it was. That won't be the case here in Game 2, a contest that should easily surpass this number.

Best Bet: Over 203

Lineup change possible as LeBron, Cavs look to bounce back

BOSTON (AP) Put Kevin Love's name atop the list of the Cavaliers that walked out of Cleveland's 25-point Eastern Conference finals Game 1 loss to Boston a little staggered, but with an unbowed head.

The reason: He's got a teammate by the name of LeBron James that's had a way of responding after lopsided playoff defeats.

Just ask the Indiana Pacers.

The Pacers stunned the Cavs at home in their first-round opener, rolling to an 18-point victory. In Game 2, James was all but unstoppable as he replied with a 46-point, 12-rebound performance.

''I expect him to have a big response,'' Love said of James on Monday. ''He's always done it. Even before he came back to Cleveland and since I've been here he's always responded big. .... He's going to approach this game as one that he's going to have to lead and bounce back.''

Even if James does have a big Game 2 Tuesday night in Boston, he'll need some help - and the Cavaliers know it.

Love said he thought the Cavs were a ''little soft'' in the first half in Game 1. Getting tougher could mean a lineup change for the Cavaliers.

Coach Tyronn Lue acknowledged that he was at the least considering inserting Tristan Thompson into the lineup after Boston's Al Horford had his way in Game 1, scoring 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting.

''It's definitely something we have to weigh,'' Lue said. ''We weighed it before the series started, but we'd won seven out of eight and we weren't going to adjust until someone beat us and we didn't play well with that lineup and that got us to this point.''

Lue said numbers showed that in the last three years, out of all the players that have guarded Horford over at least 30 possessions, Thompson is No. 1 in the league defending him.

''So that's a good thing to know,'' Lue said.

Boston also outscored Cleveland 60-38 in the paint. That, JR Smith said, is a sign James' supporting cast needs to do more.

''We've got to help `Bron,'' he said. ''We can't just expect him to do everything. As role players, we've got to play our role.''

Thompson came off the bench Sunday but has fared well opposite Horford in the past. Change would mean going away from the three-guard lineup of Smith, George Hill and Kyle Korver, along with James and Love. That lineup tormented the Raptors last series.

Thompson said the Cavs weren't able to ''clean up the boo-boo on our lips'' after the Celtics' initial run in Game 1.

''I think as a team, 1 through 5, we gotta all play tougher,'' Thompson said. ''Obviously, when I check in the game I try to bring that toughness and that energy. But our starters gotta be ready to throw the first punch. We need them to do that, we need them to be physical and set a tone early.''

He said his past playoff success against Horford has come by him being himself, which means being active early.

''Horford is playing very well right now and he's shooting the crap out of the ball,'' Thompson said. ''When I go check into the game, whether it's him or (Aron) Baynes I just try to run the floor, set pick-and-rolls and just try to work him on both ends so that hopefully by the second half his legs might be a little tired where he might not make that three that he makes in the first half.''

Boston doesn't seem concerned about who the Cavs put on the floor.

The Celtics feel they are a much different team than the one that trudged into last year's conference finals matchup with Cleveland still toting the emotional baggage of helping teammate Isaiah Thomas cope with the death of his sister.

Boston also started that series on just a days' rest following a draining seven-game series with Washington.

None of that is a factor this time around for a rebuilt roster that despite being down two All-Stars in Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward, has found a synergy with its remaining group.

This incarnation of the Celtics is not only young and athletic but playing with a physicality that was missing at times last season.

The Celtics' starters scored 88 points in Game 1, while shooting 58 percent from the field and going 10 of 21 from the 3-point line. Cleveland's starters scored 46 points, shooting 33 percent from the field and going just 3 of 19 from beyond the arc.

''We got a lot of guys where we just don't care,'' Marcus Smart said. ''(Cleveland is) here for a reason, because of the talent that they have. But we have talent as well.

''We have guys that are fearless. So we just go out there and do what we do.''

Allen says LeBron doing what he does

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) Ray Allen has enjoyed watching former teammate LeBron James lead Cleveland through the NBA playoffs. And it's not much different than what Allen saw almost daily when the two were part of the Miami Heat's run to a NBA title in 2013.

''He's the main cog of what the Cavaliers are doing,'' Allen said Monday. ''I don't see him doing anything outside of his spectrum. He's doing what he's been doing most of his career. When we start talking playoff basketball and about the players who are good, we expect them to do their jobs when it's time to do their jobs.''

For the two-time NBA champion in Allen, there's no higher compliment.

Allen spent his stellar, 19-year career well prepared for whatever moment there was. He was a 10-time NBA all-star who helped a trophy-starved Boston to a championship in 2008, then joined James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh with the Heat to capture the 2013 crown.

Allen, the son of an Air Force veteran, starred for Hillcrest High School in Dalzell, South Carolina, about an hour east of Columbia. He returned to the Palmetto State this week to be part of the newest group of inductees into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame.

''This is my first induction into any hall of fame,'' Allen said, smiling.

Allen, 42, left the game after the 2014 season as the NBA leader in career 3-pointers made - more than 400 more than Reggie Miller in second place. Allen's also known for several big moments on the court, including his seven 3-pointers in the sixth and final game of the 2008 title series to defeat the Los Angeles Lakers to help the Celtics win their first championship since 1986.

It was Allen's 3-pointer from the right corner for the Heat in game six of the 2013 series with San Antonio that tied things at 95-all, a game Miami would go on to win in overtime before closing out the title run a game later.

Allen, who also played for Milwaukee and Seattle , prefers remembering the smaller moments, ones fans don't see where teammates practice together and commit to let their talent and effort loose in games.

''The moments when the guys counted on me to come through for them,'' he said. ''Just being accountable.''

That's what Allen sees from James as much in a first-quarter blocked shot or box out as in a last-second banker to defeat Toronto in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

''It's being a good teammate,'' he said. ''The people see the big shots, but what we see is, `Man, he was a great teammate. He was always there.'''

As far as the all-time debate, Allen gives the edge to Michael Jordan over James. Playing against both of them, Allen said Jordan ''didn't have any weaknesses. There was just no way that you could stop him.''

Allen is certain James, especially with more playoff showings like this season, will make a stronger case for the top spot.

Allen missed Boston's opening game conference finals win over Cleveland and James on Sunday as he had just returned from China where he was promoting the NBA. It's a country hungry for more of the game, Allen said. He said he met one fan there who had his signature sneakers from his early days in Milwaukee.

He's not pulling for the Celtics or Cavaliers, just more compelling playoff basketball.

And there should be plenty of that Tuesday night when Golden State plays at Houston, and when there should be plenty of 3-pointers being tossed up.

Allen, though one of the all-time great long-range shooters in the NBA, doesn't enjoy talking about the role he played in the evolution of game, where 3-pointers are being shot in record numbers. Allen attempted 500 or more 3s just three times in 19 seasons. Steph Curry and Klay Thompson have each done that for the Warriors the past six seasons.

''I just believe I did what I was supposed to do when I had my time,'' Allen said. ''I try never to play those woulda, coulda, shouldas.''

Allen credited his time in South Carolina for learning to overcome adversity on being a military child mixing with civilian students who knew little about life on an air base.

''This is a place that grew me up as a young person,'' Allen said. ''It's where I got my start.''

Marcus Morris and his Boston teammates got the best of LeBron James in the opener of the Eastern Conference finals. The second-seeded Celtics look to stymie the Cleveland star for the second consecutive contest when they host the fourth-seeded Cavaliers on Tuesday in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series.

Morris helped hold James to 15 points on 5-of-16 shooting as Boston roared to a 26-point halftime advantage en route to a 108-83 torching of Cleveland in Sunday's series opener. Morris moved into the starting lineup and had 21 points and 10 rebounds after boasting prior to the opener that he is one of the best in the NBA at defending James. "It's a team effort, man, it's not just me," Morris told reporters after the easy victory. "Everybody played their part in guarding him. He's obviously the best player in the game, and you need multiple guys and a team to guard him an entire game. I just think we did a great job of that." Cavaliers veteran swingman Kyle Korver summed up the performance this way: "Bad game, bad first game. There's lot of things we can do better in the next one."

But the decision to elevate Morris into the starting power forward spot was the big difference-maker as a player who was just 18-of-59 shooting in the five-game series against Philadelphia made 7-of-12 shots and effectively hounded James. "He was able to really force the issue in the offensive end and make LeBron exert so much energy because then he has to come down and really guard him," backup point guard Marcus Smart told reporters. "Can't take plays off against really good players."

BOSTON (AP) Jaylen Brown scored 23 points and the Boston Celtics withstood a 42-point night by LeBron James to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 107-94 on Tuesday and take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference finals.

Terry Rozier added 18 points, while Al Horford finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Boston improved to 8-0 this postseason at TD Garden. The Celtics have never blown a 2-0 series lead in the playoffs.

James added 12 assists and 10 rebounds. He scored 21 of Cleveland's 27 points in the first quarter , tying his playoff career high for points in a period. His 42 points marked his fifth 40-point game of this postseason. James had just 15 points and missed all five of his 3-point attempts in the Cavs' Game 1 loss.

But he didn't seem to play with the same force after straining his neck in a first-half collision and the Cavaliers wilted in the second half, with the Celtics outscoring them 59-39.

Kevin Love finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds for Cleveland.

As expected, Tristan Thompson started in place of Kyle Korver in the hopes his presence could energize what was a sluggish Cavs offense in Game 1. Thompson got Cleveland's first basket of the night and helped to limit Horford's effectiveness on the inside early on.

Korver added 11 points off the bench for Cleveland. But starters Thompson, JR Smith and George Hill combined for just 11 points on 5-of-17 shooting.

Tempers flared with 3:49 to play with Boston leading 97-89. Marcus Morris got in Smith's face after Smith pushed Horford in the back to prevent a layup. Smith shoved Morris and the pair had to be separated.

Smith was assessed a flagrant foul and both received technical fouls.

Boston's balanced attack was effective again, with six players reaching double figures. Cleveland had 15 turnovers leading to 13 Boston points. The Celtics turned it over just six times.

Boston led 84-77 after three quarters and took command late in the fourth with the Cavs getting little offense other than from James. Cleveland's starters were pulled with 1:48 left and the Cavs down 14. They sat more than seven minutes to conclude Game 1.

James was on the attack from the opening tip. He turned the ball over the Cavs' first possession. But it was one of his only miscues in the first quarter.

James was also astoundingly efficient, using his dribble to create space, while he knocked down an assortment of jump shots.

He finished the opening quarter 8 of 13 from the field and 4 of 7 from the 3-point line.

His momentum was stunted briefly at the 3:50 mark of the second quarter, when Tatum was whistled for a foul after catching James jaw with his shoulder as he attempted a steal. James stayed in the game and connected on one of his ensuing free throws, but then exited to the locker room with Cleveland leading 47-36.

The Cavaliers said James had a neck sprain. He returned after missing less than two minutes of game time.

Boston flurried just before the half, getting six points from Morris in the final minute to trim Cleveland's lead to 55-48 at the break.

TIP-INS

Cavaliers: Were outscored 50-42 in the paint after being outscored 60-38 in Game 1.

Celtics: Went 10 of 31 from the 3-point line.

BIG RUN

Trailing 61-52 after a basket by Love, the Celtics scored seven straight points to make it 61-59, then used a 15-7 spurt to take 74-71 lead, their first of the second half. The two runs included 11 points by Rozier and six by Morris.

13) I usually have a great time sitting in the sportsbook here at the Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas; usually find lot of interesting people to talk to. Comfortable chairs, big screens to watch the games on. Had great fun watching games Monday, but last night……..

I’m sitting there last night, and this guy sits in the chair next to me, on my right; within 90 seconds, he starts in by criticizing every team he has bet on. For the next two hours, I heard in loud and obscene terms:

— Washington Caps pass too much in the offensive zone.
— Mike Matheny doesn’t know how to make a lineup.
— Matt Carpenter shouldn’t bat 2nd.
— The Flaherty kid pitching for St Louis should be in AAA.
— Matt Chapman sucks as a third baseman.
— Matt Carpenter shouldn’t be playing.
— Daniel Mengden can’t field his position. And on and on………..

12) Now two of those guys play for the Oakland A’s, and if you know me, you know I’ve been an A’s fan since 1965, when Phil Roof was the A’s catcher and Jose Tartabull played the outfield. I love the freakin’ A’s. I’m biting my tongue so hard with this guy it hurts.

He bet the Cardinals and A’s in the first five innings; both bets win, but he doesn’t say one positive word about either team. He loses his NHL wager. I am considering whether he has Tourette’s syndrome or is just a degenerative gambler without any filter at all.

11) He blurts out “Winner, winner, chicken dinner” as the 5th inning ends in the A’s game, and goes to cash his ticket. I say to him “Mengden won the game for you” and he protests with a profanity (“He can’t field his (bleep)ing position”) as he storms off, never to be seen again.

Should’ve said something about an hour earlier…….

10) Robinson Cano gets an 80-game suspension for failing a drug test; weird timing, since he broke his hand Sunday, and the suspension/injury will be served at same time. Cano will be eligible again in late August, but if Seattle makes the playoffs, he is ineligible to play in them.

Cano loses roughly $11.85M with the suspension; Mariners can use that money to try and replace him, or fortify their team somewhere else. Seattle is 24-17 with roughly 25% off the season gone; they’re half-game out of the 2nd Wild Card spot.

9) David Tepper, a billionaire hedge-fund manager who owned a small part of the Steelers, will buy the Carolina Panthers for $2.2B or so and keep the team in Charlotte. Mr Tepper is said to be paying cash to buy the team. 2.2 billion dollars. In cash.

I can barely afford a team in my fantasy league. Good for him.

8) Supreme Court has opened the door for states other than Nevada to start taking bets on sports; New Jersey is already rumored to be starting on Memorial Day.

7) New York-Washington baseball game was suspended in the middle of the 6th inning last night, with game 3-3; it’ll be resumed at 5:05 ET today, and then the regularly-scheduled game will be played.

Orioles-Phillies got rained out last night; that game will be made up July 12.

6) Guy named Tom Haberstroh is a better man than I am; he counted how many times each team dribbled in the Rockets-Warriors game Monday. Houston 1,105, Warriors 812.

Point being that part of Golden State’s greatness is that they get great spacing and they find open men quickly with passes, the way basketball should be played. Plus the open men they find can all shoot, otherwise it would be pointless to get them the ball.

5) Phoenix Suns won the NBA Lottery, so they get the first pick in the draft; seeing as they already hired a foreign-born coach who was once coached international prospect Luka Doncic on a national team, you’d think he’ll be the choice, yes?

But Deandre Ayton played one season for the Arizona Wildcats; most people seem to think he is the best player in the draft. We’ll see what the Suns do.

Sacramento/Atlanta pulled upsets and moved up to the 2nd and 3rd spots in the draft.

4) Arizona Diamondbacks lost star CF AJ Pollock (broken wrist) for 4-6 weeks.

3) You can wager on what color hat the Queen of England will be wearing at the royal wedding this weekend. Green is the current favorite, bet down to even money.

2) So you bet the Astros-Angels game last night; maybe you bet the game because Fielden Culbreth was the home plate ump, but Culbreth got drilled in the mask by a foul ball in the 3rd inning and was replaced by CB Bucknor, who is more of a pitcher’s umpire.

Sometimes stuff happens during a game and it either helps you or hurts you from a gambling perspective; when you’re hot, things fall your way. When you’re cold, you lose replay challenges and guys drop fly balls on you. Part of what makes gambling so challenging.

1) I made a wager on the Dodgers-Marlins game last night, forgetting that they can’t show Dodger games here in Las Vegas unless they’re on national TV. Las Vegas for some stupid reason, is considered part of the LA market, so their games get blacked out.

Think I realized all this about 30 seconds before the talkative gambler sat next to me and brightened up my world. Today will be a better day!!!!

NBA Western Conference Final Game 2 betting preview and odds: Warriors at Rockets

The Golden State Warriors flashed supreme form in the opener of the Western Conference finals and look to take a 2-0 lead when they visit the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. The Warriors outscored the Rockets by 13 points in the second half while recording a 119-106 win in Game 1.

Forward Kevin Durant scored 37 points and shooting guard Klay Thompson added 28 as second-seeded Golden State was in top form while outclassing James Harden and the top-seeded Rockets. "I don't know if we're at our peak," Durant told reporters. "I think we could be better. I mean, the stakes are high. We're playing the Western Conference finals against the best team in the league, the No. 1 seed, an MVP on their team. So I think everybody just wants to enjoy this time." Harden recorded 41 points and seven assists in the opener but didn't receive enough help from the supporting cast. "We're all in this together," Harden told reporters. "It doesn't matter who has a bad game or who is missing shots. ... Keep shooting your shot and being aggressive. We got this far doing that and having that mindset, so we're just going to continue it."
