  • Stars going for back-to-back wins at Sun

The San Antonio Stars take their second shot at their first two-game winning streak of the season Sunday.

But the task won't be an easy one as the Stars open a two-game trip against the sizzling Connecticut Sun in Uncasville, Conn.

"Getting our first road win of the season was amazing," Stars coach Vickie Johnson said after her team improved to 2-16 with a 79-72 victory at Indiana on Tuesday night. "We worked so hard in practice, so I'm glad it carried over to the game. These past few days were very important for us with the work we put in and it showed today."

The Stars scored their first win of the season on June 30, but the first attempt at a two-game winning streak was snuffed out in an 89-56 blowout loss at home -- to the Sun, who have turned around a slow start and now lead the Eastern Conference.

The Sun (11-8) are coming off a two-game western swing that started with a win in Seattle but ended, along with Connecticut's five-game winning streak, in an 87-77 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Courtney Williams scored 17 points, Alyssa Thomas had 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists, Jasmine Thomas collected 10 points and eight assists, and Jonquel Jones had eight points and eight rebounds in the second meeting with San Antonio.

That game was in San Antonio. The first time the teams met, in Connecticut on June 3, it was a much-closer 85-77 win for the Sun.

The Sun, who were supposed to be in a rebuilding year after losing Chiney Ogwumike for the year before the season started, lost their first four and five of their first six, but are 10-3 since thanks to a pair of five-game winning streaks.

"I think the big thing for us is the ball isn't sticking," Sun coach Curt Miller recently told WNBA.com. "We're moving the ball, sharing the ball from side to side. Getting into second and third options."

The Sun have two All-Star starters in Jones and Jasmine Thomas, both making their first All-Star appearances, and have had a WNBA-record and still-active four straight Eastern Conference players of the week -- Jones, Alyssa Thomas, Jasmine Thomas and Alyssa Thomas again.

Jasmine Thomas took to Twitter to thank the fans for voting for her All-Star spot.

"Excited to be an All-Star starter!! Grateful to be on a team that allows me to be ME & to be surrounded by the greatest teammates ever," she tweeted.

Shekinna Stricklen, who had a season-high seven 3-pointers for all 21 of her points in the win at Seattle, scored only four points in the 10-point loss at Los Angeles. Morgan Tuck, playing her first serious minutes since missing 11 games with a knee contusion, had seven points, two rebounds and two assists in the loss.

Kayla McBride led the Stars in the win at Indiana with 18 points, going 12 of 13 from the foul line. Erika de Souza went 7-for-7 from the floor in a season-high 14 points, while Dearica Hamby had 13, and rookie Kelsey Plum added 12 points and six rebounds.

    • Liberty search for offense against Mystics

New York Liberty head coach Bill Laimbeer has been left to scratching his head as he wonders what has happened to his team's offense.

Just a little over two weeks ago, Washington defeated the Liberty in a game that saw New York score 54 points -- the lowest output of any team this season. Since that loss on June 29, New York has lost three of four and averaged only 72 points in those four games.

Laimbeer might be making some lineup changes come Sunday when the Liberty play host to the Mystics at Madison Square Garden.

"Overall, our defense is keeping ourselves in games," Laimbeer told nysportsday.com. "It's the offensive part is what's struggling now. We are not getting consistent bench scoring. I might have to move a starter there to get us a boost when everyone is tired."

The Liberty's struggles are especially surprising considering New York is led by five-time All-Star Tina Charles. Her 20.9 points per game are second-best behind Phoenix's Brittney Griner (22.3). Charles also is averaging 9.6 rebounds per game.

Shavonte Zellous and Kia Vaughn have been steady as of late, with Vaughn earning kudos from her coach.

"Vaughn is playing well right now," Laimbeer said. "She's a physical presence out there and she demands the basketball on the inside. She sets the best screens on the team, so she's going to play her fair share of minutes."

The Liberty's task might be made a lot easier depending on the status of Washington's All-Star forward Elena Delle Donne, who sprained an ankle on Friday and left the game after only four minutes with no points and one turnover.

Delle Donne was to be evaluated on Saturday, leaving her status for Sunday's game in doubt. And as of late Saturday afternoon, there was no word on her availability.

Without Delle Donne in the lineup, Emma Meesseman scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds to lead the Mystics to their first win since beating the Liberty in June.

Meesseman averaged 15.2 points last season for the Mystics and has played in only eight games this season after playing for Belgium at the 2017 FIBA EuroBasket Championships.

"The best part of this is we can get a lot better," Mystics coach Mike Thibault told the Washington Post before Meeseeman's return. "We've got a lot of upside, and that feels good."

After holding Indiana to 58 points on Friday, even without Delle Donne, Washington has reasons to feel good. The Mystics won for the first time in four games in July and improved and got solid efforts from Krystal Thomas (14 points) and Tianna Hawkins (11 points).

Some of the enthusiasm is tempered because of Delle Donne's situation and because of an injury to guard Tayler Hill, whose status is also in limbo.

Hill (13.3 points per game) landed awkwardly on her right knee after attempting a layup and had to be carried off the court on Friday. She left the arena in a wheelchair.

      • Sky go for 4th in row vs. Wings

Allie Quigley and the Chicago Sky look to keep the WNBA's longest winning streak going when they visit Skylar Diggins-Smith and the Dallas Wings on Sunday afternoon at College Park Center in Arlington, Texas.

Although Chicago (6-12) owns the worst record in the Eastern Conference and the second-worst mark in the league, the Sky have won three in a row -- including a home win over Dallas (9-11).

Quigley, the league's 12th-leading scorer averaging 16 points per game, had 22 points to lead Chicago past Dallas 90-84 on Wednesday. Jessica Breland added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Diggins-Smith, whose 17.9 points per game ranks eighth in the league, paced the Wings with a team-high 20 points and Allisha Gray added 18 in defeat.

Dallas was held to 39.2 percent shooting and allowed Chicago to make 12 of 25 3-pointers. The Wings were done in by a poor third quarter in which they were outscored 32-13.

Quigley was limited to 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting in Friday's game in New York, but that didn't keep the Sky from topping the Liberty 78-68.

Stefanie Dolson led the way with 23 points and Courtney Vandersloot, back from overseas playing commitments, added 13 points and nine assists to keep Chicago's win streak rolling.

"It's big going into this four-game road trip we have," Vandersloot told reporters. "We were running out of time. We were saying we'd put it together and now it seems like we are."

Vandersloot is averaging 16.7 points and 11.3 assists during the team's winning streak.

Chicago's winning streak began with a surprising 100-76 win over the Western Conference powerhouse Minnesota Lynx on July 8, marking the Sky's first home victory of the season.

Dallas has dropped two straight and three of four entering its matchup with Chicago, but is still averaging the fourth-most points in the league at 84.3.

Chicago is fourth-to-last in the league in scoring, averaging 78.7 points.

The three-game season series between the Sky and Wings concludes Aug. 30 at Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill.

        • Griner injury takes luster off Mercury-Lynx rematch

There will be no battle of elite centers sequel on Sunday in St. Paul, Minn.

Brittney Griner, Phoenix's star center, will miss three to four weeks after being injured Friday in the fourth quarter of the Mercury's 88-71 home loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

The two teams meet again on Sunday at Xcel Energy Center.

Griner, the WNBA's leading scorer (22.3 points per game), sustained "a left knee bone bruise and a right ankle sprain," according to the team's website.

Griner left the game with 8:49 left. She had 15 points and four rebounds for the Mercury.

Angel Robinson is expected to replace Griner in the starting lineup. The 6-foot-6 Robinson had eight rebounds in her debut, a June 30 loss to Minnesota.

"I love rebounding and defense," Robinson told the paper. "We have a great offensive team with BG (Griner) and Diana Taurasi. It's just do your part and don't overdo it."

"All the post players have to step up," Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello told the Arizona Republic. "No one person is going to replace Brittney. We need all three of them to bring different looks and rebounding every single game. It's a great opportunity for Angel. She's still trying to find her feet and get more integrated into our system. That will happen the more court time she gets.

"I believe in this team. We have enough depth, but we're replacing a pretty special player. The next few games will tell. These girls will compete hard. Hopefully we can hang in there until BG gets back. That's all we can do."

Friday's loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Mercury (11-7), who had not lost since the previous matchup with the Lynx.

Minnesota's elite center, Sylvia Fowles, had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

"The physicality that she receives every night, the attention that she's going to draw because of how well she's playing, it's much harder than it even appears for you to keep your head in those situations," teammate Maya Moore said of Fowles, according to the Star Tribune. "We always try to be there for her and remind her, 'It's going to come, it's going to come.' That's just a testament of who she is."

The Lynx (14-2) bounced back from their second loss of the season -- a 100-76 thrashing at Chicago that came on the heels of their showdown win over the Los Angeles Sparks, who beat Minnesota in last season's WNBA Finals.

"After our disappointing effort last weekend, we just got back to the basics," Moore told the Star Tribune, "and really just ... reminded ourselves of who we are in some of the staples on defense."

Minnesota now has nine straight wins against Phoenix. The Lynx hold a two-game advantage in the Western Conference over second-place Los Angeles, with the Mercury another two games back in third.

Both teams play Wednesday -- Phoenix at home against Indiana, Minnesota hosting Dallas -- prior to next weekend's All-Star break.

              • Preview: Stars (2-16) at Sun (11-8)
                Date: July 16, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

                • Preview: Mystics (11-8) at Liberty (8-9)
                  Date: July 16, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

                  • Preview: Sky (6-12) at Wings (9-11)
                    Date: July 16, 2017 4:30 PM EDT

                    • Preview: Mercury (11-7) at Lynx (14-2)
                      Date: July 16, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Sylvia Fowles scored 18 points and the Minnesota Lynx used an 18-0 run in the third quarter to beat the Phoenix Mercury 81-66 on Sunday night.

Minnesota (15-2), off to the best start in franchise history, beat the Mercury 88-71 in Phoenix on Friday night.

Jia Perkins scored a season-high 13 points, Rebekkah Brunson added 11 and Plenette Pierson and Renee Montgomery had 10 points apiece for the Lynx.

Fowles converted a 3-point play and then made a layup to give Minnesota the lead for good and spark the decisive run that made it 67-51 when Renee Montgomery hit two free throws with 50 seconds left in the third quarter. The Lynx led by double figures the rest of the way.

Phoenix (11-8) shot 58.3 percent from the field and hit 10 of 12 free-throw attempts in the first half but made just 10 of 36 (27.8 percent) shots from the field after the break.

Rookie Yvonne Turner scored a career high 18 points for the Mercury. Brittney Griner and Diana Taurasi, who combine to average more than 40 points per game, did not play for Phoenix. Griner was injured in the fourth quarter of Friday's loss and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks. Taurasi didn't travel with the team in order to rest.

                          WINGS 112, SKY 106, 2OT

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Skylar Diggins-Smith had 26 points, Kaela Davis added a career-high 23 and Dallas overcame an 11-point deficit to beat Chicago in double overtime.

Karima Christmas-Kelly scored 17 points, Glory Johnson had 12 points and nine rebounds, and Kayla Thornton added 11 points - all in the fourth quarter and overtime - for Dallas (10-11).

Chicago's Stephanie Dolson made a layup to tie it with 2:34 to play, but Davis and Theresa Plaisance made layups and Diggins-Smith hit two free throws as the Sky went scoreless down the stretch.

Dolson had a career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds, Jessica Breland scored a season-high 23 points and Allie Quigley added 22 for Chicago (6-13). Courtney Vandersloot had 10 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and a career-best tying five steals.

Dallas took its first lead when Glory Johnson's putback made it 81-80 with 2:34 left in regulation and Thornton's offensive rebound and layup with three seconds to go forced overtime. Diggins-Smith hit a contested 3 to tie it with 2.3 seconds left in overtime.

Chicago had its three-game win streak snapped.

                          SUN 89, STARS 75

UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - Courtney Williams scored 15 points to lead a balanced Connecticut offense and the Sun beat San Antonio.

Jasmine Thomas, Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas added 13 points apiece, Alyssa Thomas had nine rebounds for the Sun (12-8). They have won 11 of their last 14 after losing five of six to open the season.

Kayla McBride's layup gave San Antonio (2-17) a seven-point lead 30 seconds into the second half, but Connecticut used a 26-4 run - during which the Stars went scoreless for nearly 3 1/2 minutes - to take a 61-46 lead seven minutes later. Williams scored 10 points during that stretch and the Sun led by double figures the rest of the way.

Isabelle Harrison led San Antonio with 17 points, McBride had 14, and Kelsey Plum added 11. Plum, the first pick in the draft and the NCAA career scoring leader, has scored in double figures in three of the last four games after failing to do so in the first 12 games of her career.

                          LIBERTY 88, MYSTICS 55

NEW YORK (AP) - Bria Hartley scored 15 points to help New York beat short-handed Washington.

Sugar Rodgers added 14 points coming off the bench for the Liberty (9-9), who jumped out to a 16-point lead at the end of the first quarter.

Emma Meesseman scored 19 points for the Mystics (11-9). They were missing star Elena Delle Donne because of right ankle injury.

                            — RIP Martin Landau 89, who passed away Sunday. A great actor; he played the law professor in Rounders. His scenes with Matt Damon were tremendous.

                            *******************

                            Monday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend……

                            13) Being an A’s fan isn’t as fun as it used to be; Oakland had a great walk-off win Saturday night- they’re 6-2 in their last eight games, but then Sunday they traded Doolittle/Madson to Washington, for two Class A prospects and Blake Treinen, who if he was any good, this trade wouldn’t have happened.

I mentioned the other day how the A’s had roughly $24.5M on the books for 2018-20, total; well, dealing Doolittle/Madsen eliminates about half of that amount.

It is now an annual event, like the swallows returning to Capistrano; the A’s don’t contend, then they sell some of their decent players for minor leaguers in July, then are lousy the rest of the year, they make excuses about being a small market team. Oy.

On July 31, 2014, the then-contending A’s traded Yoenis Cespedes for free agent-to-be Jon Lester and Jonny Gomes- since that genius move, Oakland is 200-270, but no one in the front office gets fired. Coaches on field get fired; they don’t create the roster. Go figure.

                            12) A’s social media was working overtime after the trade was announced, liking every positive tweet that ran after the walk-off win Saturday night, trying to create positive vibes.

Positive vibes come from having a contending team, or at least trying to have one.

                            11) NL Wild Card race is going to get crazy; Rockies are 6-15 in their last 21 games; Arizona is 3-11 in its last 14 games, as the Dodgers pull away in the NL West. The Wild Card pack is going to catch up quickly unless the Rockies/D’Backs wake up.

                            10) Christopher Kamka on Twitter pointed out that Jose Quintana is 9th guy to pitch for both Cubs/White Sox in same season; last one was Matt Karchner, in 1998.

                            9) I’m adamant that when a player assists on a 3-point basket, he should get 1.5 assists; just like if a pass leads to free throws, he should get half an assist for each foul shot made.

                            8) Phillies-Brewers wore late 70’s/early 80’s throwbacks this weekend; Phillies wore light blue road unis, which lot of teams wore back then.

They closed the roof at Miller Park in the 2nd inning, which according to Brewers’ TV guys, changes how fly balls carry in the park. Ryan Braun struggled on a fly ball right after the roof closed. Once the roof is closed during a game, it cannot be re-opened during the game.

                            7) 7-foot and 8-foot high outfield fences are awesome in baseball, because guys can rob home runs. Marcell Ozuna made a great catch Sunday, robbing Kike Hernandez of a homer in the sixth inning. Check out MLB Network for highlights; you worry when a fielder climbs a chain-link fence- you don’t want his cleats to stick in there, but this was a tremendous play.

                            6) Chris Paul’s AAU team won the Peach Jam tournament in Augusta this weekend, which is a very good tournament. Decent amount of NBA players sponsor AAU teams.

                            5) Jordan Spieth’s brother Steven is on the Dallas Mavericks’ squad in the Las Vegas summer league. Steven went to college at Brown; he had 5 points against the Celtics Saturday night.

                            4) Odd Stats of the Day: The Cubs have won their last 13 games played on July 15.

Mets won their last 18 games when one of their pitchers homers in that game.

                            3) Seattle Mariners’ catcher Mike Zunino grew up in Florida; was he destined to play for Seattle? He played for Mariner High School is Cape Coral, FL.

                            2) Jed Lowrie makes $6.5M; he is now the Oakland A’s highest-paid player, which means he will be gone too, soon. Sonny Gray makes $3,575,000 a year; he better not get traded unless they get back really, really strong prospects in return. Good starting pitchers are invaluable.

                            1) Another Bastille Day passes with no mention of Sebastian Cabot, who played Mr French on the 60’s sitcom Family Affair. Who was more French than Mr French?
