  • Mystics, Fever look to end three-game skids

The Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever each will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they meet Friday night at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

Washington (10-8) maintains a strong shot at the postseason despite three straight losses this month to the Los Angeles Sparks, Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Sun. Each one of those defeats came by single digits.

Indiana (7-10) also is winless in July and is coming off its most embarrassing loss of the season. On Wednesday afternoon, the Fever could not manage to win on their home court against the San Antonio Stars, who had lost 15 of their first 16 games.

This marks the second meeting of the season between the teams. On June 11, the Mystics marched to an emphatic 88-70 win over the Fever thanks to a team-leading 25 points by forward Elena Delle Donne. Center Krystal Thomas contributed a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Mystics' impressive size will not be any easier for the Fever to deal with this time around. Delle Donne is averaging 19.8 points and 6.6 rebounds per game and recently was named to her first All-Star game since joining Washington.

The backcourt tandem of Tayler Hill (13.8 points) and Kristi Toliver (10.3 points) also is averaging double digits for Washington. Both are shooting above 90 percent from the free-throw line.

For Indiana, veteran forward Candice Dupree has provided steady contributions during the team's up-and-down season. Dupree's 14.4 points per game lead the team, and she also is averaging 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest.

Guard Erica Wheeler is next in scoring average with 11.4 points per game. Meanwhile, guard Tiffany Mitchell is averaging 10.6 points for the Fever.

The offensive statistics are nice, but Indiana head coach Pokey Chatman wants better defense from her players.

"Until we battle on the defensive end for every possession and every second, we're going to come up short," Chatman told the team's official website. "I've been saying it for a while now, but we have to continue making improvements on defense."

The Mystics also are determined to show a better effort after their most recent loss against the Sun. Washington squandered a 22-point lead with a dismal second half.

"We have to learn from it," Delle Donne told reporters after the game.

Indiana learned this week that guard Shenise Johnson will miss the remainder of the season because of a torn ACL in her left knee. Johnson, who sustained the injury during practice Tuesday, is expected to make a full recovery and play next season.

    • Liberty return home to face Chicago

The New York Liberty and head coach Bill Laimbeer are probably looking forward to returning home.

Coming off a 1-3 road trip, the Liberty (8-8) open a crucial homestand against the Chicago Fire on Friday night at Madison Square Garden.

While closing out the road trip, the Liberty struggled against the Phoenix Mercury on Sunday, shooting only 35.4 percent in a game dominated by Mercury center Brittney Griner (31 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots).

Despite trailing by 17 and eventually losing by 12, the Liberty saw a silver lining in the loss.

"You want to feel good, especially with the All-Star break approaching," Liberty All-Star Tina Charles said. "There was a certain way that we played -- with energy and great effort. Everybody that stepped on the court contributed and showed what their strength is. We want to keep that rolling."

The Liberty will have that opportunity on Friday at home, where New York is a different team. The Liberty average 82.4 points per game at the Garden where they are 5-3. On the road, New York scores at a 75.3 clip and is 3-5.

The one constant for the Liberty has been Charles. She is second in the league in scoring at 20.8 points per game and contributes 9.1 rebounds per game as well as 2.4 assists.

For her efforts, Charles on Tuesday was selected as a 2017 WNBA All-Star starter for the third time. She will be making her fifth appearance in the All-Star game, scheduled for July 22 in Seattle.

"No player in the WNBA works harder or means more to their team than Tina Charles," said Laimbeer, who will coach the Eastern Conference squad.

Chicago (5-12) has a two-game winning streak after handing Dallas a 90-84 loss on Wednesday.

A pair of ex-DePaul players led the way for the Sky. Allie Quigley scored a game-high 22 points while Keisha Hampton came off the bench to toss in a season-high 12 points.

"Keisha has a great work ethic and a great basketball mind," Quigley told the Daily Herald of Hampton. "She's always ready to come in and shoot. Hard work has paid off for her."

Hard work also has paid off for Quigley, a two-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Award winner. Chicago is her fifth team and she leads the Sky in scoring at 16.4 points per game.

The Sky and Liberty have yet to play this season but have two more games against each other after Friday.

            • Preview: Lynx (13-2) at Mercury (11-6)
              Date: July 14, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

The WNBA-leading Minnesota Lynx will start a home-and-home weekend series when they visit the hot Phoenix Mercury on Friday night.

Minnesota (13-2) won in Phoenix 91-83 on June 30, but the Mercury (11-6) have ripped off a season-high four consecutive victories since.

"They've changed a little bit," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve told WNBA.com.

"That's what happens during the course of the season; two weeks is a long time. Somebody gets hot and starts playing well, so then the emphasis of what they are running could be tweaked a little bit or they add a wrinkle. ... You have to be nimble."

The hottest player in the league is probably Phoenix center Brittney Griner, averaging a league-best 22.8 points. As it was in the first meeting, the marquee matchup will be Griner against center Sylvia Fowles, averaging 20.1 points and 10.0 rebounds.

That post battle never developed June 30 as a foul-plagued Griner played only 20 minutes, scoring a season-low six points and grabbing only three rebounds. In the four games since, the 6-foot-8 Griner is averaging 26.0 points and 10.8 rebounds.

"We had a tough game last time we played them," Phoenix coach Sandy Brondello said of the Lynx. "BG only had 20 minutes in that game. Hopefully they just let us play, and may the best team win."

Fowles had 17 points and eight rebounds in the first game against Phoenix, when Lynx forward Maya Moore scored a team-high 21 points. Moore (15.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.9 assists) and Fowles were selected this week as All-Star Game starters for the West in voting from fans, media and players.

Phoenix guard Diana Taurasi will also be an All-Star starter, although Griner will not. The reserves will be announced next week.

Taurasi is the WNBA's career leading scorer, while Minnesota guard Seimone Augustus is 13th and guard Lindsay Whalen is 14th.

Minnesota is coming off a surprising 100-76 loss on Saturday at the Chicago Sky, which is in 11th in the 12-team league. Fowles and Moore combined for only 21 points as the Lynx committed 20 turnovers.

While Minnesota, which won the league in 2015 and lost in the 2016 championship series to Los Angeles, was expected to be at the top of the standings this season, Phoenix was not. The Mercury replaced everybody except Griner and Taurasi after last season.

"I think we're learning a lot about ourselves right now," Taurasi said. "When Minnesota comes to town, that is always a tough challenge, so we'll see if we're up for it. ... I think we're ahead of schedule, which is nice."

The Lynx have won eight consecutive games against Phoenix, dating to the end of the 2015 season. Minnesota went 6-0 versus the Mercury last season, including a three-game playoff sweep.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Emma Meesseman scored 15 points and the Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 72-58 on Friday night, a victory tempered by the loss of star forward Elena Delle Donne to a sprained right ankle early in the game.

The Mystics (11-8) snapped a three-game losing streak, their longest skid of the season.

Krystal Thomas added 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt had 11 rebounds to pass the 550 mark for her career.

Washington started fast in the first half to put the Fever away early. Krystal Thomas made a layup for the first points of the game, then hit a 3-pointer to cap a 13-4 opening run. Washington led 26-11 after one and 50-28 at the half.

Briann January scored 15 points to lead the Fever (7-11). They have lost four straight overall and four in a row at home.

Courtney Vandersloot and Kahleah Copper each added 13 points for the Sky (6-12). They had dropped five of six before the current streak.

Lynx win; Mercury's Griner injures leg
                  July 14, 2017

PHOENIX (AP) Maya Moore and Seimone Augustus each scored 19 points and the Minnesota Lynx built a big-first half lead and coasted to an 88-71 victory over the Phoenix Mercury on Friday night.

Phoenix star Brittney Griner sustained a leg injury early in the fourth quarter and had to be helped off the court.

Minnesota (14-2) has won nine straight against Phoenix dating to 2015, including a three-game sweep in last season's playoffs.

Sylvia Fowles added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Lynx. They shot 52 percent and held Phoenix (11-7) to 36 percent.

Griner led the Mercury with 15 points, and Diana Taurasi had 14.

Renee Montgomery hit a jumper with 5:50 left in the first to give Minnesota a 9-8 lead and the Lynx led the rest of the way. Augustus' jumper at the buzzer made it 23-13 after one, a lead that Minnesota pushed to 17 at the half.

                  Phoenix had won four straight.

                  • Saturday’s six-pack

                    — Braves 4, Arizona 3— Ender Inciarte made a great catch to keep tying run off base leading off 9th inning- he also scored two runs.

                    — Warriors 109, Clippers 100— Oregon’s Dylan Ennis scored 35 points.

                    — Michael Pineda has a torn UCL, might need Tommy John surgery.

                    — Red Sox DFA’d Pablo Sandoval; they still owe him around $50M thru 2020.

                    — By way of comparison, the A’s have only $25.5M of salary on the books for 2018-20, and thats for the whole team.

                    — Rumors are that Ezekiel Elliott might get a domestic violence suspension; Cowboys went from -4.5 to -4 at some sportsbooks Friday for their Week 1 game against the Giants.

                    ******************************

In a perfect world, where I made all the decisions………

                    13) If you’re making a certain amount of money ($20M a year??) in the NBA, then you’re not allowed to take “recovery” or “maintenance” days off. Steph Curry makes $40M a year; James Harden makes almost as much as that. You’re tired? Too bad. Show up and play— people pay a boatload of money to watch you play.

If you’re hurt, thats another thing, but some guys are just taking off one night of back-to-backs when it isn’t that hard to play on consecutive nights- they did it when they were kids.

                    12) No radios in NFL players’ helmets; you have six days to prepare for these games. Give the QB a wristband with plays on it and let the players play. Coaches have all week to coach.

                    11) Get rid of the Electoral College; the Presidential candidate who gets the most votes wins. I’ve heard arguments by both sides. This one is simple: candidate with the most votes wins. For me, this goes back 15-20 years, it isn’t about last year.

                    10) National League and American League would have the same rules where the DH is concerned; I don’t even care if there is/isn’t a DH anymore, just have the same rules in both leagues.

I’d be willing to eliminate the DH, in exchange for 26 or 27-man rosters for each team, with expansion to only 30 players after September 1st.

                    9) Every relief pitcher would have to face 2+ batters in a game, not one, unless the one batter is the last out of an inning. This would quicken the game, eliminating the L-R-L pitching changes that slow the game down to a halt.

                    8) I’d lower the drinking age to 18; if you’re old enough to go to war, then you’re old enough to have a beer.

                    7) No more visits to the pitchers’ mound by coaches/managers. None. Ever. Again, let the players figure it out on their own.

                    6) Could we put an NHL team in Quebec City, and one is Saskatoon? I hear they like hockey there. Having teams in Raleigh, Brooklyn and Arizona just doesn’t seem smart.

                    5) The NFL would eliminate Thursday Night Football, except for the Week 1 game and the Thanksgiving games.

                    4) Would shorten NFL preseason to two games; would also allow teams to do more in the offseason, as far as actually practicing football. An 18-game regular season with the Super Bowl on Presidents’ Day weekend would be good.

                    3) In ’n Out Burger would have one, preferably two places in the Albany, NY area. Please????

                    2) NCAA basketball tournament would go back to 64 teams.

                    1) People would be more respectful of each other’s opinions, and of each other. Everyone hates everybody these days— take a deep breath and tolerate other people. it isn’t that hard to do.

                              July 15, 2017

SEATTLE (AP) Breanna Stewart scored 24 points and Crystal Langhorne added 20, making all nine of her shots, to help the Seattle Storm beat the Atlanta Dream 90-84 on Saturday night.

Seattle (9-10) trailed 74-69 midway through the fourth quarter before Stewart and Langhorne scored the next five points to tie it. The Storm took the lead for good at 78-76 on Stewart's reverse layup with 3:09 left. The Dream (8-10) couldn't get a stop down the stretch as the Storm scored on six straight possessions to secure the victory.

Langhorne has made her last 18 shots over the past three games. She's five short of the WNBA record set by Los Angeles' Nneka Ogwumike last season.

Tiffany Hayes scored 19 points, and Brittney Sykes added 16 for the Dream.

Sue Bird had 10 of her 12 points in the first half and Seattle led 45-43 at the break. Her 3-point shot made it 38-25 with 6:36 left in the second quarter before the Dream rallied behind Damiris Dantas to get within two at the half.
