Preview: Fever (7-11) at Sparks (13-5)

Los Angeles Sparks coach Brian Agler is beginning to see something familiar in Nneka Ogwumike.

"I think the last couple of games, you're starting to see the games she had a year ago when she was MVP," Agler told the website Swish Appeal ahead of the Sparks' game against the Indiana Fever on Monday at Staples Center in Los Angeles. "Where she was just so persistent around the basket, she was so tough to defend, she was on the boards, and she can hit threes now. She can step out, stretch the defense and hit 3-point shots."

Ogwumike had 29 points for the Sparks in an 87-77 home win over the Connecticut Sun on Friday. Connecticut had won five in a row before Los Angeles (13-5) overcame a 14-point, first-half deficit.

"They were hitting shots early and they put us on our heels a little bit," Agler said. "We dug down a little bit better defensively, got some stops, started playing in transition and were able to take a one-point lead. I was really proud of how we showed a lot of persistence and resiliency."

Candace Parker, who the previous night won an ESPY award for Best WNBA Player, had a bounce-back performance with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Parker had been held to two and 10 points in her previous two games.

"When (Parker is) really engaged, she's a facilitator as much as she is a scorer and a rebounder," Agler told the website. "The way I look at things is that the real elite players play elite, but they also make their teammates better. That's what Candace does. She can get shots for other people -- just like that big three that Riquna (Williams) hit. So, she sees the floor so well and of course the combination of her and Nneka. They bring the best out of each other."

The Fever (7-11) will arrive at Staples Center on a four-game losing streak. Indiana, which lost to the Sparks 84-73 at home on June 24, are 10th overall in the league standings.

In its most recent loss, 72-58 to the Washington Mystics on Friday, Indiana shot just 27.3 percent from the field.

"It's easy to look at the stat sheet and talk about the shots you didn't make, but the next layer is to think about the shots you did not take because you turned it over 18 times and they scored 24 points off of them," Fever coach Pokey Chatman told the Indianapolis Star. "This is not coach-speak, this is just peeling back the layers, and facts only. You can be a fan and look at percentages, or you can be an elite-level player and look at areas of the game that you can affect and take away."

The Fever's western swing will take the team to Phoenix on Wednesday, San Antonio on Thursday and Dallas on July 25.

Los Angeles, in the middle of a four-game homestand, hosts Chicago on Thursday afternoon.

Sparks hand Fever 5th straight loss, 80-62

LOS ANGELES (AP) Chelsea Gray scored 16 points while Nneka Ogwumike added 14 points and 12 rebounds to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the Indiana Fever 80-62 on Monday night.

Odyssey Sims' three-point play capped Los Angeles' 16-2 second-quarter run to build a 42-29 lead and Indiana only scored 12 points in the third. The Fever went on a 7-0 run in the fourth to pull to 68-59 but Gray answered with a jumper, and Riquna Williams' steal and fast-break layup extended Los Angeles' lead to 13 points.

Candace Parker had 14 points and nine rebounds for Los Angeles (14-5). Alana Beard scored five points to reach 4,500 career points.

Briann January scored 12 points for Indiana (7-12), which has lost five straight. The Fever made six of their seven 3s in the first half.

It was the first regular season game on a Monday since these two teams played each other on July 28, 2014.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Carolina Panthers fired their GM Monday, 8 days before training camp opens. Panthers had a 40-23-1 record while Dave Gettleman was the GM, playing in the Super Bowl two years ago.

Former Panthers Steve Smith/DeAngelo Williams openly gloated about the firing on Twitter. Gettleman was (obviously) not well-liked by the players on the Panthers.

Must be an interesting story behind all this, then again, Carolina owner Jerry Richardson also fired his two sons when they worked for the Panthers.

12) Kansas City Chiefs fired their GM last month; also odd timing. You would think this is a down time for NFL teams, just before camp starts, yet two teams canned their GMs. Go figure.

11) Houston Rockets’ owner Leslie Alexander put the team up for sale Monday; he’s owned the Rockets for 24 years. No one saw this coming, not even people who work for the team.

Rockets just traded for Chris Paul, gave James Harden a huge contract extension- they’re the most popular NBA team in Asia (because of Yao Ming) so that inflates the value of the franchise a decent amount. Last thing I saw had them ranked the 7th-most valuable NBA franchise.

10) Red Sox have been shut out eight times this year; five of the eight games were Rick Porcello starts. Boston-Royals-Angels-Giants have all been shut out eight times, most in MLB this year.

9) As of late Sunday night, Westgate SuperBook in Las Vegas had taken 56 bets on whether or not the Lakers will make the playoffs this coming season. All 56 bets were “yes”.

8) Nationals 6, Reds 1— Washington sweeps 4-game series; they had a 5-0 lead in all four games. Daniel Murphy scored from 2nd on a sac fly in this game- the RF made a lunging catch in right-center, fell down, and Murphy kept going. Rough weekend for Cincinnati.

7) Milwaukee Bucks’ prospect Thon Maker fouled out of a 40:00 summer league game, when the foul limit was 10 per player. Thats not easy to do.

6) Mets’ TV analyst Keith Hernandez made a cryptic comment during Sunday’s game. His partner Gary Cohen was talking about manager Terry Collins, and Hernandez chimed in, “Terry has a lot more to deal with than the fans know about.” Wonder what he meant?

5) Golden State Warriors’ over/under win total for next season: 66.5.

4) Redskins’ QB Kirk Cousins will play under the franchise tag again this year, will try to get by on his $23.94M salary and likely will be playing elsewhere (SF?) in 2018.

3) Indiana’s new basketball coach Archie Miller signed three top 100 recruits over the weekend, and kept the three recruits Tom Crean had coming in to Bloomington this fall. Miller is a very good coach.

2) Texas Rangers were 36-11 in one-run games last year, finished 95-67, won the AL West by nine games……..this year, the Rangers are 7-15 in one-run games, are 45-46, 16.5 games behind the first-place Astros. Little things make a big difference.

1) Roger Federer banked $2,880,240 for winning Wimbledon; his on-court winnings in his great career have now grown to $107,325,425. That is before endorsements.

By way of comparison, Dwight Howard has earned just around $190,000,000 in salary in his career.

Hayes leads Dream against Stars

All-Star Tiffany Hayes and the Atlanta Dream are looking to bounce back from a disappointing two-game road trip when they return home to host the struggling San Antonio Stars for a Tuesday matinee at Atlanta's McCamish Pavilion.

The Dream dropped back-to-back close games at Phoenix and at Seattle last week. Atlanta had leads in the fourth quarters of both games, but couldn't hold on and fell to 3-7 on the road this season.

Hayes scored 19 points and five players finished in double figures, but Atlanta got beat on backboards and allowed the Storm to shoot 51.5 percent from the floor in a 90-84 loss Saturday night.

"Our goal is to get back to .500 after this week," Dream coach Michael Cooper said after the loss to Seattle. "It will be tough, but we can do it."

The Stars enter Tuesday's game at 2-17, by far the worst mark in the league, but did pick up their first road win of the season at Indiana on Wednesday. They couldn't back it up at Connecticut on Sunday, though, faltering in the second half of an 89-75 loss to the Sun. San Antonio was outscored 33-10 in the third quarter against Connecticut.

"Getting our first road win of the season was amazing," Stars coach Vickie Johnson told the Hartford Courant after Sunday's loss. "We worked so hard in practice, so I'm glad it carried over. These past few days were very important for us with the work we put in and it showed."

Hayes, in her sixth year, is headed to the All-Star game for the first time. She was voted a starter for the Eastern Conference. The WNBA All-Star game tips off Saturday at KeyArena in Seattle. She leads the Dream in scoring at 16.5 points per game, good for 10th in the league, and is averaging 1.6 steals.

San Antonio won two of three meetings with the Dream last season, but dropped the first meeting with Atlanta this year.

Hayes scored 16 points to lead the Dream past the Stars on May 31. San Antonio committed 23 turnovers in the loss.

Tuesday's game at McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech University tips off at 11:30 a.m. ET.

Sky descend on Seattle for matchup with Storm

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Storm moved into the WNBA's eighth and final playoff position with a win Saturday over Atlanta.

But closing quickly in the rear-view mirror are the Chicago Sky, the team the Storm will host on Tuesday night at KeyArena.

The Sky (6-13), which got off to a slow start after trading All-Star Elena Delle Donne to Washington in the offseason, had a three-game winning streak snapped Sunday with a 112-106 double-overtime loss at Dallas.

Center Stefanie Dolson had a career-high 26 points and 10 rebounds in the loss and was named Monday as the Eastern Conference's player of the week.

Jessica Breland scored a season-high 23 points and Allie Quigley added 22 for Chicago. Courtney Vandersloot had 10 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and a career-best tying five steals.

"(Vandersloot's) a point guard for a reason," Dolson told The Summitt. "She sees things other people don't. She'll pass me the ball sometimes when I don't even know I'm open. It's fun to play with a player like that."

Seattle forward Breanna Stewart had 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists as the Storm defeated the Dream 90-84 on Saturday at home. Stewart received the league's Western Conference player of the week award.

Teammate Crystal Langhorne added a season-high 20 points against Atlanta, going 9 of 9 from the field.

Langhorne has made 18 straight field-goal attempts in the past three games, five makes shy of the WNBA record set by Los Angeles' Nneka Ogwumike last year.

"It's who she is," Storm coach Jenny Boucek told The Seattle Times. "Consistency is her middle name.

"We don't call many plays for Lang. (It's) so different from what she's grown up with, and for her to have the character to accept that, it just warms my heart that she's getting some reward now from humbling herself and playing whatever role we need her to play."

The Storm (9-10) will be looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since late May and reach .500 at the All-Star break.

"Things haven't gone the best for us," Langhorne told The Times. "But hopefully we can end our halfway point with a win."

This will be the first of three meetings between the Storm and Sky this season.

SEATTLE (AP) Allie Quigley scored 25 points and Keisha Hampton had a season-high 14 to help the Chicago Sky beat the Seattle Storm 94-83 on Tuesday night.

Chicago trailed 31-11 early in the second quarter but got within 42-41 after Tamera Young's back-to-back jumpers to close the half.

The Sky took their first lead, 43-42, on Young's basket early in the third and Quigley scored 11 points in the quarter. She matched her career-high with six 3-pointers. Kahleah Copper's three-point play gave Chicago an 81-72 lead and after a Seattle offensive foul, Copper made a hook shot in the lane.

Young finished with 11 points for Chicago (7-13), which outscored Seattle's reserves 42-8.

Breanna Stewart had 25 points and 11 rebounds for Seattle (9-11), which turned it over 18 times. Crystal Langhorne entered needing five straight field goals to tie Nneka Ogwumike's WNBA record of 23. She made her first three shots before missing an open jumper near the free-throw line.

DREAM 88, STARS 75

ATLANTA (AP) - Tiffany Hayes scored 25 points and Brittney Sykes added a career-best 20 to lead the Dream over the Stars.

Atlanta trailed by 10 after one quarter before rallying behind Hayes. She had 12 of her points in the second quarter as the Dream (9-10) cut its deficit to 39-37 at the half.

Sykes, who has scored in double figures in nine straight games, took over in the second half as the Dream pulled away from the Stars (2-18).

Isabelle Harrison scored 22 points to lead San Antonio despite rolling her ankle in the first half. San Antonio was missing Kayla McBride, who injured her ankle in the team's last game.

The Dream head to Washington to play the Mystics in their final game before the All-Star break.

Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

13) TheMMQB.com ran a very interesting feature this week— an all-time draft of NFL players, with some veteran NFL minds drafting the players. Bill Polian, Ernie Accorsi, Dan Fouts, Gil Brandt were four of the 12 people picking teams.

None of this solves anything, but it is great fodder for debate. Here are the 12 QB’s who were taken, in the order they were selected.

1) Unitas 2) Brady 3) Otto Graham 4) Montana 5) Elway 6) Staubach 7) Manning 8) Bradshaw 9) Rodgers 10) Favre 11) Marino 12) Aikman

12) Other highlights of the draft:
— Lawrence Taylor was the first player taken. I have a friend Scott who knows more about football than anyone I know— when he reads that, he is not going to like it.
— Dan Fouts drafted Terry Bradshaw; he should’ve drafted Dan Fouts, who was better than Bradshaw and Aikman.
— Fouts drafted Ray Guy in the first round; I don’t have an explanation for that.
— Sammy Baugh got drafted, but as a punter, not a QB.
— Each team also drafted a coach; here are the 12 coaches picked, in order:

1) Lombardi 2) Walsh 3) Levy/Dungy (co-coach— Bill Polian did that) 4) Noll 5) Shula 6) Gibbs 7) Landry 8) Belichick 9) Coryell 10) Paul Brown 11) Curly Lambeau 12) Madden

No Parcells is weird; picking your buddies Levy/Dungy over Belichick is plain stupid. George Allen could be in this group of 12, but some of these guys just took their friends. Then again, if I was picking a team, my coach undoubtedly would’ve been Dick Vermeil. ��

11) Best coaches who were left out: Parcells, Vermeil, Hank Stram, Bud Grant, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Flores, Sid Gillman.

10) Best QB’s who were left out: Bart Starr, Drew Brees, Ken Stabler, Kurt Warner, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, Steve Young.

9) Dodgers have swept 11 series this year; Clayton Kershaw didn’t pitch in 3 of the 11 series.

8) Announced attendance in Oakland Monday night was 9,736, a very quiet 9,736. It was the A’s smallest home crowd in six years.

When you start selling off players, it may be good business over the long haul, but it sends the message that “we’ve quit for this year.” People don’t like to shell out money to watch teams who have quit for the season.

White Sox are 0-4 since dealing Jose Quintana; A’s are now 1-1 since trading the two relievers to the Nationals. I’m going to track this as teams sell off guys the rest of this month.

7) Former big league 1B James Loney is off to Korea to play for the LG Twins on a $350,000 deal. Eric Thames played over in Korea for three years and now he is back in the majors with Milwaukee.

6) Weird Story of the Day: Cowboys WR Lucky Whitehead is asking for help locating his pitbull Blitz, who was abducted; the thieves are demanding a $10,000 ransom. Seriously, they are.

5) I wish they’d legalize online poker in this country so ESPN would start showing the World Series of Poker again (no one will buy commercial time if online poker is illegal). First prize this year is $8.1M; the final table is set, but I’ve never heard of any of the nine guys.

If you’re the first guy eliminated at the final table, you still bank $1M, so thats not too bad.

4) NBA season is starting October 17 this year, earlier than usual, as the league tries to reduce the amount of back/backs each team plays.

3) Astros’ SS Carlos Correa is out 6-8 weeks (thumb), another victim of the headfirst slide. Guys need to wear that hand protector Mike Trout is wearing now if they want to slide headfirst.

2) White Sox traded Todd Frazier, David Robertson and Shaker High’s Tommy Kahnle to the Bronx for Tyler Clippard (???) and two prospects. According to someone on Twitter who says they know a lot about the minor leagues, White Sox have 10 of the top 68 prospects in the minors, but top prospect Yoan Moncada is now headed to the Windy City.

1) Arizona acquired free agent-to-be JD Martinez from Detroit for three prospects. Guy on MLB Network said the three prospects aren’t that great, and that Arizona got off cheap on the deal.
