    • Preview: Sparks (12-3) at Lynx (12-1)
      Date: July 06, 2017 8:30 PM EDT

They claimed three of the past four WNBA titles. They were the two best teams last season, which ended with their epic battle in Game 5 of the Finals, considered one of the greatest in league history.

      Not much has changed.

The Minnesota Lynx (12-1) and Los Angeles Sparks (12-3) are once again the top two teams in the WNBA. They meet for the first time this season Thursday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn.

In October, Nneka Ogwumike's put-back with 3.1 seconds remaining gave the Sparks a 77-76 win and their first championship in 14 years.

"That's a heart-breaking way to lose," said the Lynx's Maya Moore, who had put her team up by one with 15 seconds to go. "The team that won this game deserved to win the game. It's just hard to have it come that close."

Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve says she has moved on.

"Other than when people bring it up," she told the (St. Paul) Pioneer Press after Wednesday's practice, "it's not at the top of my mind anymore.

"(Thursday's game is) not the WNBA Finals. It's a regular-season game and both teams are jockeying for position, and I'm sure both teams are going to want to win the game."

Lynx center Sylvia Fowles, who this week was named Eastern Conference player of the month for the second straight time, said last year's loss will fuel her.

"It definitely sparks something in us because we did lose to them last year," Fowles told the newspaper. "That's always on our mind when we have to go back and face them."

Fowles is second in the league this season in both points (20.7 per game) and rebounds (10.1).

For the Sparks, who have won eight straight games, Ogwumike and Candace Parker are second and third behind Fowles in the WNBA's list of most likely MVPs.

Parker had 17 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday when Los Angeles came back from a 17-point halftime deficit to beat the Washington Mystics 76-69.

"I joke with our team saying that I'd rather us be down 17 points than up 17 points -- just the way in which we attack possessions," Parker told the website Swish Appeal.

"We knew that we didn't play very well in the first half but we kept it within distance. We had to get the game within single digits by the fourth quarter and that's what we did."

Parker said she believes Thursday's contest will gauge where her team stands in 2017.

"It will be a good opportunity to see where we are against the top team in the league," she said.

"We're excited to play them, excited to hold up our end of the rivalry," Parker said. "But it's only a rivalry when you beat a team multiple times in the playoffs. We have to get a couple more (playoff series) wins for it truly to be a rivalry. But it is becoming that."

The Lynx have remained on top thanks to their current three-game win streak that followed their first loss of the season, against Connecticut on Jun 17.

But this will be their biggest challenge yet this year.

"It's pretty much us in a different uniform," Fowles said, according to the Pioneer Press. "That's what's exciting about it."

      • Preview: Liberty (7-7) at Storm (7-8)
        Date: July 06, 2017 10:00 PM EDT

Seattle forward Breanna Stewart is hitting her stride just in time as the Storm return home to face the swooning New York Liberty on Thursday at KeyArena in Seattle.

Stewart scored a season-high 30 points on Saturday to help the Storm beat Dallas 89-69 in Arlington, Texas, and end a three-game losing streak. Stewart also grabbed 10 rebounds.

Crystal Langhorne added 19 points, Sue Bird totaled 12 points and eight assists, and Alysha Clark scored 10 points for Seattle (7-8).

Stewart is one of two players in the league (along with Minnesota's Sylvia Fowles) currently in the top seven in points, rebounds and blocks per game. Langhorne set a season high for points as well against the Wings on 9-of-12 shooting from the field. Her 64.6 field-goal percentage is second in the WNBA.

Bird notched her 2,500th assist in the game after entering two shy of the milestone. The 15-year veteran trails only Ticha Penicheiro (2,599) on the WNBA's career assists list.

The Storm had 29 assists as a team, tying the franchise record. Tuesday's game against New York begins a five-game homestand for Seattle.

New York heads to the Pacific Northwest on the heels of an 81-72 loss at Atlanta on Sunday.

Tina Charles finished with 21 points and Sugar Rodgers scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter for the Liberty (7-7), who have lost three in a row and four of five and are in the middle of one of their most difficult stretches of the schedule.

Sunday's loss was the second of a four-game road trip that will see New York travel to Phoenix on July 9 before heading home to play Chicago on June 14.

"We need a win on the road," Liberty coach Bill Laimbeer said. "We've lost three in a row. We have been playing better defense, but we have to play better on offense. We have to make shots and not turn over the ball in key times. That has been our bugaboo -- we haven't had enough positive possessions."

The Liberty had a season-best four-game win streak in early June after they started the year 2-3. They haven't won a game in the last two weeks and counting and enter Thursday night's game with the fourth-most turnovers in the WNBA (14.2 per game).

New York has struggled offensively as well, ranking second-to-last in assists per game (15.4) and ninth in points per game (79.4).

"We need to start the game with the effort we had in the second half," Charles said of the loss to Atlanta. "We have to continue to hold ourselves accountable -- we know each other's strengths and weaknesses and we have to maximize those and get those out of one another and we will be fine."

            — Pittsburgh Steelers Yes -$340, No +$280

            — San Francisco 49ers Yes +$1,400 No -$4,000

            **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here…….

            13) Braves 5, Nationals 2— Start of game was delayed over three hours, but it never rained. Seriously. Game started after 10pm, local time. It was supposed to rain, but it never did. Whoops.

Fans who had tickets last night get two freebies to another game; fans who stayed for the game got all kinds of food free during the game.

            12) NBA happenings:
            — Rudy Gay got $17M for two years from the Spurs.
            — Kelly Olynyk got $50M, four years from Miami.
            — Miami retained James Johnson: four years, $60M.
            — Sacramento gave 40-year old Vince Carter $8M for one season.
            — Clippers gave EuroLeague star Milos Teodosic $12.3M for two years.

            11) Milwaukee Brewers are 48-40, only NL Central team over .500; they lead the division by 4.5 games. Very surprising.

            10) Raiders’ QB David Carr’s new contract with the club is worth a lot more because the Silver and Black are moving to Las Vegas. Had the Raiders stayed in Oakland, because of California tax laws, Carr would’ve gotten paid $8.7M less, after taxes.

            9) Apparently the going rate for an NBA general manager is $4M a year; Cavaliers offered Chauncey Billups $1.5M a year, then upped the offer to $2M, which is why Billups declined.

            8) Dodgers’ Alex Wood is 10-0, with a 1.67 ERA. Who saw that coming?

            7) Marlins’ President of Baseball Operation Michael Hill has been given a 5-year, $10M contract extension; this confuses me, because the Marlins aren’t good, and their payroll is a mess that will have to be dealt with before the team is sold.

And what if the new owners want a new guy in charge? They have to pay Hill $10M to go away?

            6) Iona-Manhattan are playing a basketball game at Nassau Coliseum this coming season; I’m curious which school gave up a home game, unless it is a 2-year deal, and they both will. One of the better rivalries in the mid-major MAAC.

            5) In 1969, Baltimore’s Dave McNally was 13-0 at the All-Star break, the most wins by a pitcher without a loss before the All-Star break.

            4) 34-year old DeAngelo Williams is an NFL free agent; he tried his hand at pro wrestling last weekend, taking part in Impact Wrestling’s pay-per-view Sunday, after practicing for only three days. Wrestling fans said Williams did really well in the ring, but he still wants to play football.

            3) I was at a funeral home last night that had valet parking; never saw that before. Parking lot wasn’t very big, not sure why they needed it.

            2) Cubs are defending world champs, but they’ve only got one guy in the All-Star Game, and that guy wasn’t on their team last year- could be first time that has ever happened.

            1) Dodgers 5, Arizona 4— LA tore the hearts out of the Diamondbacks’ chests by scoring four runs in the ninth inning- they swept this series, now lead the NL West by 5.5 games.

              • Preview: Fever (7-8) at Dream (6-8)
                Date: July 07, 2017 7:30 PM EDT

The Indiana Fever are struggling with transition defense this season. The Atlanta Dream are at their best when they're getting up and down the floor, moving the ball and getting scoring from multiple players.

The two Eastern Conference rivals collide Friday at McCamish Pavilion in Midtown Atlanta.

The Fever (7-8) are trying to find consistency, especially on the defensive end. They surrendered 91 points in a home loss to Connecticut on Saturday.

"I think we have too many letups, especially in transition defense, and it's killing us throughout the course of games," Indiana guard Candice Dupree told the team's website this week. "So as long as we can clean that up, we should be OK.

"It's just the defensive aspect of the game. We know we can score whenever we want, but we got to be able to get stops."

The Dream nearly overcame an 16-point halftime deficit but came up short in a 94-84 loss at Dallas on Wednesday. Tiffany Hayes led five Atlanta players in double figures with 16 points in the loss.

"We're always successful when we do that (have multiple players in double figures)," Atlanta coach Michael Cooper said last week. "Earlier in the season, we were having five and six people in double figures, and that helps you a lot because you're moving the basketball, everyone's involved on offense and it's fun to play that way."

The Fever beat Atlanta 85-74 in the teams' first meeting this season on June 15. Indiana guard Erica Wheeler scored 20 points, including a late 3-pointer that helped squash a late run by the Dream.

Rookie guard Brittney Sykes has since been inserted into the Atlanta starting lineup and has provided a spark.

"It's just a credit to my teammates," Sykes said after scoring a career-high 19 points in a win over the New York Liberty last week. "They've stayed in my ear these past couple practices and during this losing streak to just stay positive and stay patient and just do what I do best. That's staying in transitions and giving my team energy on defense."

Indiana has won four of the last five meetings with the Dream.

Atlanta announced Thursday that it had waived guard Meighan Simmons.

                • Preview: Mercury (8-6) at Stars (1-15)
                  Date: July 07, 2017 8:00 PM EDT

The Phoenix Mercury will look to continue their recent domination of the San Antonio Stars when the teams meet for the second time this season on Friday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The Mercury (8-6) beat San Antonio 78-72 in the Alamo City on May 19. Phoenix also swept the season series in 2016, winning all three games by an average win margin of 16.7 points per game.

The Friday game also will be the first matchup between San Antonio and Phoenix since a June 28 trade between the two squads. The Mercury acquired Monique Currie in the trade while sending Shay Murphy, Sophie Brunner and a 2018 draft pick to the Stars.

The Mercury head to San Antonio with some momentum built by an 88-80 victory over Washington on Wednesday in Phoenix. Brittney Griner posted her fourth double-double of the season with 30 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

Griner, the league's leading scorer at 22.4 points per game, came back strong after scoring a season-low six points in a loss to Minnesota on June 30. She made 11 of 17 shots from the field against Washington and also had three blocked shots and three assists. Her 30 points marked her second-highest total of the season.

Paramount to her success on Wednesday was Griner's ability to stay out of foul trouble, which kept her on the bench for much of the loss to the Lynx.

"I can be very successful when a game is called great like tonight," Griner said after the Wednesday win. "These refs did a great job. Last game it was really the fouls. I can't attack from the bench."

Camille Little chipped in 14 points, and WNBA career scoring leader Diana Taurasi hit for 12 points, all in the final quarter and a half.

"Every game is tough in this league -- you can't just go in and expect to win because you'll lose," Mercury coach Sandy Brondello said. "That's what I enjoy about it; we have the next challenge. We have to get ready for San Antonio."

San Antonio (1-15) was nearly run out of its own gym on Wednesday in an 89-56 trouncing by Connecticut, who scored eight of the game's first 10 points and never looked back. The Stars took their worst loss of the season after earning their first win of the year just five days earlier.

"Connecticut played harder than we did -- they played better than we did," San Antonio coach Vickie Johnson said. "They just dominated us. That's just the worst we've ever played. Our effort on both sides of the ball was horrible."

The Stars scored just 24 points in the first half (their lowest half of scoring this season) when they trailed 40-24 and never made a run at the Sun, thanks mostly to 33.9 percent shooting and significant rebounding and assist deficits. San Antonio's starters were outscored by its reserves 29-27 in the loss.

Kayla McBride led the Stars with 12 points against Connecticut. Kelsey Plum, the top draft pick in the 2017 WNBA draft, added a career-high 11 points, and Sydney Colson also hit for 11 points for San Antonio.

"No disrespect to Connecticut, but we really put it on ourselves the way we turned the ball over, just didn't execute (and) played real sloppy," Plum said. "Obviously, they had something to do with it, but I think a lot of it was unforced.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Sylvia Fowles had 20 points and 13 rebounds, Renee Montgomery scored a season-high 20 points, and the Minnesota Lynx beat the Los Angeles Sparks 88-77 on Thursday night in a rematch of the WNBA Finals.

Los Angeles won the title last year, taking the deciding fifth game 77-76 in Minnesota on Nneka Ogwumike's short jumper with 3.1 seconds left.

On Thursday, Minnesota (13-1) was ahead by 19 points in the first half, but Los Angeles (12-4) cut it to 53-49 midway through the third quarter. The Sparks had won eight straight.

Plenette Pierson's open 3-pointer from the wing with 7:31 left gave Minnesota the first double-digit lead of the fourth quarter. Fowles made a layup for an 84-77 lead with 1:23 to go and after a Los Angeles turnover, Rebekkah Brunson followed her own miss for a nine-point lead.

Seimone Augustus added 16 points for Minnesota (13-1), and Maya Moore had 10 to move past Asjha Jones for 30th in WNBA history with 4,007.

Ogwumike had 27 points and 14 rebounds for Los Angeles. Candace Parker was scoreless in the first half and her only points came on a fast-break layup with 6:26 left in the third quarter. It was only her second game this season scoring under 10 points.

                      LIBERTY 79, STORM 70

SEATTLE (AP) - Tina Charles had 12 rebounds to become the franchise leader and scored 29 points in New York's victory over Seattle.

Charles has 1,062 rebounds with New York. She broke the franchise mark of 1,053 set by Vicki Johnson.

Charles blocked Breanna Stewart's layup and hit a bank shot at the other end to extend New York's lead to 58-52. The Liberty added two free throws at the end of the third quarter for an eight-point lead.

Stewart and Sami Whitcomb each made a 3-pointer on consecutive Seattle possessions to pull to 70-64 with 5:46 left. But after a timeout, Charles answered with a three-point play.

Kia Vaughn had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Epiphanny Prince added 16 points for New York (8-7).

Stewart had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Seattle (7-9). Sue Bird made her first basket of the game with 8:14 left in the fourth to snap a six-plus minute field-goal drought for the Storm.
