  • Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

    — Northwestern 67, Michigan 65— Wildcats win on length-of-court OB pass for a layup with 0:01.3 left. Is that the win that gets Northwestern in the NCAA’s for the first time?

    — SE Missouri 78, Tennessee St 75 OT— Overtime drama in the OVC tourney.

    — Murray State 85, Tennessee Tech 84, 2OT— Racers’ PG took 40 shots (15-40), scored 41 points, but hit a 28-footer to win the game in double overtime. Fun game to watch.

    — Florida 78, Arkansas 65— Underrated Gators are 24-6.

    — Kansas State 75, TCU 74— Battle for 6th place and a bye in Big X tournament.

    — Looks like Kevin Durant will miss the rest of the regular season; playoffs are roughly seven weeks away.

    **********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

    13) Why would anyone buy tickets to watch the Philadelphia 76ers play? They stink every year (103-284 the last five years) and then they draft young players who rarely play.

    — Ben Simmons, zero NBA games (of a possible 59)
    — Joel Embiid (31 games, of a possible 223)
    — Jahlil Okafor (94 games, of a possible 141)

Karl-Anthony Towns has played in all 142 of Minnesota’s games since he’s been there. Is it that difficult to identify healthy players?

Sacramento’s TV guys actually referred to Towns playing in every game the other night, as if it were an unusual gift.

    12) White Sox 1B Jose Abreu had to leave Sox camp this week to go to Miami and testify in a smuggling/conspiracy trial against his old agent. Abreu testified that he disposed of a phony passport by eating it on an airplane while en route to America. Oy.

Abreu is also the first baseman on my fantasy team, so hopefully this distraction is behind him.

    11) Speaking of my fantasy baseball team, I added Phillies catching prospect Jorge Alfaro last week, so now I’ll have to watch Colombia’s games in the World Baseball Classic, since he is on their squad. Alfaro will start this year in AAA, is supposed to be a quality hitter.

    10) As for the 4:30am game Monday between Israel and Korea, um…..no thanks. Even I have to sleep sometime.

    9) Love having spring training games on in the house during the day; Padres were on Tuesday with Don Orsillo/Mark Grant on the call. Always good to hear laughter on your TV.

    8) Redskins’ QB Kirk Cousins will be paid $1,408,447 PER GAME next season.

    7) This is my annual reminder that it must suck to have a birthday on February 29; you get a birthday once every four years. When do people celebrate their birthday the other three years?

The most famous people I can find with this birthday are motivational speaker Tony Robbins, hockey player Cam Ward and rapper Ja Rule. Deceased stars Dennis Farina and Dinah Shore were also born on February 29.

    6) Best of luck today to Angels’ SS Yunel Escobar, who is taking his US Citizenship Test today in Miami. It is GOOD that people from other countries WANT TO LIVE HERE.

    5) Speaking of the Angels, their radio guys (simulcast on TV) were killing the Padres’ roster the other day; San Diego was 68-94 LY. Angels’ guys came out and said it is doubtful the Padres would win that many this year. Unusual to hear teams get ripped on TV.

    4) Saturday, Colorado State visits Nevada in what is a showdown for the regular season title in the Mountain West. Teams haven’t met yet this season.

There isn’t any tangible advantage to winning the regular season title; conference tourney is at UNLV no matter what, but neither CSU or Nevada has won that many hoop titles so it is a big deal to them, which makes the game Saturday a good one to watch.

    3) What are the three best free-throw shooting leagues in America?

    1- Summit League, 74.2%
    2— Southern Conference, 73.4%
    3— Ohio Valley Conference, 73.3%

Worst free-throw shooting league? Sun Belt, at 68.1%

    2) What are the three best 3-point shooting leagues in America?

    1— Summit League, 39.6%
    2— ACC, 37.2%
    3— Pac-12, 37.0%

Worst 3-point shooting league? WAC, at 32.3%

Pretty clear that the Summit League is the league with the best shooters.

1— This is from former Alabama defensive lineman Jonathan Allen, talking about when Nick Saban came to his house to recruit him:

“Coach Saban isn’t going to sit there, and put on a big smile, and promise you this and that. He isn’t going to tell you that you’re a surefire starter, or an All-SEC shoo-in, or a first-round NFL pick. He isn’t going tell your mom, “Wow … this has to be the best pot roast I’ve ever had.”

Actually — you know how I know that? Because Nick Saban turned down my mom’s food. Straight up: Coach came over to our house for a recruiting visit. And my mom, knowing we were having company over, had done some home cooking. So, of course, when Coach walked in the door, my mom offered him some dinner. And wanna know what coach said to Mom?

    “I already ate.”

He said thank you, but no thank you, he already ate. He hit her with the already ate. And all joking aside — Coach was incredibly polite, and I share that story purely out of love — it was a pretty telling moment for me. In this weird way, it told me everything that I needed to know about about Coach Saban’s intentions.

And what I mean by that is: Coach Saban hadn’t come over to put on a show, or to flatter us, or to tell us what he thought we wanted to hear. He didn’t make some big sales pitch, or promise the moon. He didn’t promise a starting spot, or SEC dominance, or national titles, or NFL riches — none of that. Truthfully, Coach didn’t promise me a thing. But what he did do was sit across from me … and answer every single one of my questions … and treat me like an adult.”

        • Inside the Paint - Thursday
          March 2, 2017

Russell Westbrook and the Thunder have started the second-half of the season very strong with three straight wins both straight up and against the spread. Including those victories, Oklahoma City (35-25 SU, 34-25-1 ATS) has gone 7-3 SU and 8-2 ATS in its last 10 games.

During this span, the All-Star point guard has notched six triple-doubles and he earned his 30th of the season (43 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists) this past Tuesday as OKC nipped Utah 109-106 as a two-point home underdog.

As of Wednesday evening, Sportsbook.ag had adjusted their betting odds to win the NBA Regular Season MVP and made Westbrook the 10/11 favorite over James Harden (1/1). The Rockets All-Star has been just as impressive as his counterpart and was favored for the past couple months but most would agree that the OKC standout is doing much more with less.

An 8-2 run versus the number is nothing to toss aside but four of the wins came against teams with losing records and it also helps that the Thunder played nine of 11 games in February at Chesapeake Energy Arena.

As they say, the “going gets tough” in March as OKC will play eight of 14 games on the road and four of those games come against the top three teams in the Western Conference – Golden State, San Antonio and Houston.

Portland (24-35 SU, 23-36 ATS) will be the first test on Thursday and as bad as the Trail Blazers have looked at times this season, they’ve opened as 1 ½-point home favorites for this matchup which could have you pumping the breaks on OKC.

The Trail Blazers have dropped five of their last six games and remain the worst team in the NBA for bettors this season. Their recent three game road-trip vs. Eastern Conference foes pretty much sums up their season as they rallied for a win at Orlando before faltering late in games to Toronto and Detroit, the latter ending in overtime.

The Moda Center is always known as a tough venue for visitors but a 14-13 SU and 12-15 ATS mark should make anybody hesitant to back the Blazers these days. They’ve gone 1-4 in their last five at home despite averaging 109 points per game, which tells you that the defense continues to be a major issue (110.2 PPG).

Fortunately for Portland, the Thunder are ranked 19th in defensive scoring (105.9 PPG) and that number jumps up on the road (108 PPG).

The total is hovering between 220 and 221 for this matchup and while the pace should be fast, make a note that Oklahoma City is ranked 29th in 3-point shooting (32.7%) and it just hit 15-of-22 in Tuesday’s win over Utah. Will that continue or was it a fluke? Most would lean to the latter, plus OKC is the best ‘under’ bet (18-8) on the road this season.

These teams met on Super Bowl Sunday in Oklahoma City and the Thunder held on for a 105-99 win over Portland and covered as a five-point home favorite. Including that result, the home team has won eight straight meetings in this series.

The Trail Blazers diced up the Thunder 114-95 on Dec. 13 as two-point home favorites and that was the fifth straight win over OKC from the Moda Center. Westbrook was held to 20 points in that loss and he’s failed to register a triple-double in two games versus the Blazers this season.

The teams will meet for the fourth and final time of the season next Tuesday from Oklahoma City.

OKC shooting guard Victor Oladipo (back) is listed as ‘questionable’ for this game.

TNT will provide national coverage of this game at 10:35 p.m. ET.

Two other games are scheduled for Thursday and below is my quick handicap.

Golden State (50-10 SU, 28-30-2 ATS) at Chicago (30-30 SU, 30-30 ATS)

Tough game to handicap after finding out that Warriors All-Star forward Kevin Durant is expected to miss at least four weeks with a bone bruise. He suffered the injury on Tuesday as Golden State dropped a 112-108 decision to the Wizards as a 6 ½-point road favorite.

How will Golden State respond without him? It’s very fair to say that the supporting cast for the Warriors is lacking both depth and talent (Barnes, Bogut, Barbosa, Speights) this season but they did rally from a 19-point deficit to Washington on Tuesday without him and almost won in a very tough environment. Durant has only missed one game this season, which happened last week, and the Warriors still ripped the Nets 112-95.

The Bulls aren’t in the same class as the Nets but they certainly aren’t considered an elite team either and that’s why they’re listed as home underdogs tonight. When catching points at home, Chicago has stepped up in class and managed to produce an impressive 6-2 record both SU and ATS this season.

Golden State opened as a six-point favorite on Wednesday and the number was pushed up to 7 and 7 ½ at a few betting shops. The Warriors have gone 19-3 in non-conference games this season, all three losses coming on the road including the aforementioned setback to Washington on Tuesday.

Chicago had its four-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday in a 125-107 loss to Denver as a 2 ½-point home favorite. Despite this loss, the Bulls have been solid at the United Center this season (18-12 SU, 15-15 ATS).

The Warriors have won and covered three straight and four of the last five against the Bulls, which includes a 123-92 victory this season on Feb. 8 as 18-point home favorites. In that game, Chicago didn’t have Dwyane Wade or Jimmy Butler in the lineup.

The total opened at 219 ½ and even though the Bulls have played to three straight ‘over’ tickets, they still remain one of the strongest ‘under’ leans (36-24) this season. Golden State has also shown a lean to the low side (34-26) this season, and that includes a 21-10 ‘under’ mark away from the Bay Area.

This game tips at 8:05 p.m. ET and will be televised nationally on TNT.

Charlotte (26-34 SU, at Phoenix (18-42 SU, 29-29-2 ATS)

The All-Star break appears to have helped the Hornets, who closed the first-half with a 1-11 mark and were 5-17 overall in 2017. Even though Charlotte is just 2-2 since then, the club has been very competitive and the two losses came in overtime to the Pistons and Clippers.

Thursday’s matchup is a winnable game and the Hornets have been installed as short road favorites (-3 ½) over the Suns. Charlotte hasn’t been great when laying points on the road (9-8 SU, 8-9 ATS) but it has won its last two in this role, both wins coming on the current road trip over the Kings and Lakers.

It’s fair to say that Phoenix is in the same class with those clubs and it has gone 6-11 SU and 10-7 ATS as a home underdog this season. The Suns have started the second-half with three straight losses (1-2 ATS) but they all came on the road. Defense continues to be a major issue for the Suns, who are ranked 29th in scoring (112.8 PPG) and 28th in field goal percentage (47.3%).

Despite the rough form for the Suns, the club has found a way to produce a winning record (11-9) versus the Eastern Conference this season. At home, they’ve gone 7-4 SU and 8-3 ATS versus the East. Charlotte has gone 10-14 versus the West but make a note that it’s gone 5-1 on the road versus the West when laying points.

This will be the first meeting between the teams this season. Last year, the pair split their two encounters with the home team winning each game and the ‘over’ cashed in both contests.

These teams will meet again in Charlotte in late March.

          • Warriors sign veteran Barnes to replace injured Durant
            March 2, 2017

CHICAGO (AP) The Golden State Warriors have signed forward Matt Barnes, adding the edgy veteran after losing Kevin Durant to a knee injury.

The Warriors announced the signing on Thursday. Barnes spent two years with the Warriors earlier in his career, helping them to a stunning upset over top-seeded Dallas in the 2007 playoffs. He played in 54 games with the Sacramento Kings this season before being waived.

The 36-year-old Barnes will add some toughness and defense to the Warriors, who are priming for a run to their third straight NBA Finals. He was expected to be in uniform for Golden State's game in Chicago on Thursday night.

Durant is out indefinitely with a sprained MCL in his left knee. The Warriors have not ruled out a return before the playoffs begin.

            • Near miss: LeBron avoids Belichick in courtside collision
              March 2, 2017

BOSTON (AP) LeBron James stopped short of plowing into Patriots coach Bill Belichick during the Cavaliers' 103-99 loss in Boston.

James went for a rebound in the fourth quarter Wednesday night when his momentum carried him off to the court and into seats on the baseline near Belichick. James knocked over a camera man but avoided running into Belichick and his girlfriend. The famously stoic coach didn't show much emotion during the near miss.

James told reporters after the game that he ''definitely slowed up'' because he knew who it was, adding, ''I'm not taking no legend out.''

James later tweeted that he and Belichick ''had a great conversation'' after the game. He says, ''things like that I'll remember forever.''

                • Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

                  — Atlanta Hawks are retiring Pete Maravich’s #44 tonight. He was great fun to watch.

                  — Red Sox P David Price has elbow issues, will go see Dr Andrews in Alabama.

                  — If the San Francisco 49ers had a game next week, they wouldn’t have a QB to play in it; they have zero QB’s under contract right now.

                  — Detroit Pistons were 3-17 on the foul line Wednesday. These are professionals. Oy.

                  — A St Louis Cardinal minor leaguer was actually walking to camp every day; pitcher Adam Wainwright noticed, and rented the young man a car for the entire spring. Good for him.

                  — Cal Bears under Cuonzo Martin have had good records, but faded late all three seasons:
2015: Lost seven of last nine games.
2016: Lost three of last five games.
2017: Have now lost four of last five games.

                  **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a solid night of basketball……..

                  13) Weird afternoon in the Big South Conference:
Campbell 81, NC-Asheville 79— 7th-seeded Camels pull a big upset in Big South. Chris Clemons scored 51 of Campbell’s 81 points in this game. Campbell lost both regular-season games with Asheville, scoring 56, 53 points as a team.

Radford 56, Liberty 52— #6-seed beats the #3-seed in an awful game where neither team could throw the ball in the ocean.

This means either the #6 or #7 seed will be playing in the championship game on Saturday.

                  12) MAAC tournament: Monmouth is the best team in this league, but if they win Saturday and host Siena beats Fairfield, then the Hawks get a true road game in the semifinals in beautiful downtown Albany. Doesn’t seem fair.

                  11) Missouri Valley tournament: Anything other than an Illinois State-Wichita State final would be a huge surprise. I’m not even sure who the third-best team is, but they aren’t very good.

                  10) Ohio Valley tournament: Murray State 75, Morehead State 69— Racers won in double OT the night before, but they were the strong team down the stretch here. Down 61-51, Murray hit three straight 3’s to get back in the game, and Morehead did nothing in last 5:00.

Surprising result; I thought Morehead would win this game.

                  9) Patriot League tournament: Top four seeds advanced to Sunday’s semifinals, so we’ll have Navy-Bucknell and Lehigh-Boston U. Survivor will be a 16-seed or a play-in team.

                  8) Cal-Davis 68, Hawai’i 59— Our friends the Aggies finish unbeaten at home; they go to Irvine on Saturday and play the Anteaters for the Big West regular season title.

                  7) Bulls 94, Warriors 87— How long does it take Golden State to adjust to not having Durant in their lineup? His injury makes the NBA a whole lot more interesting.

                  6) Sacramento State 57, North Dakota 53— Hornets win as 10.5-point underdogs; they’re 12-3 vs spread in last 15 games. Tough loss for North Dakota, which falls out of a tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference.

                  5) Colorado 91, Stanford 72- Buffaloes won seven of last ten games after starting 0-7 in Pac-12 games. Bill Walton was fired up on his last regular season ESPN broadcast of the year; at one point, he was talking about Copernicus and buffaloes stampeding. He is unique.

                  4) Minnesota 88, Nebraska 73— Golden Gophers won their last eight games; would be funny if the NCAA committee put Minnesota/Louisville in the same bracket. Well, funny for me, maybe not for the Pitino family.

                  3) Old Dominion 62, Texas-El Paso 61— Kid on UTEP tipped ball in right at the buzzer for the Miner win, but refs said it came too late. Replay I saw showed it should’ve been good.

Why are these teams in the same league? ODU is in Virginia, El Paso is in west Texas, by the Mexican border. Monarchs have won five games in a row. Miners lost but covered, their 12th straight game beating the point spread.

                  2) Iowa 59, Wisconsin 57— Hawkeyes scored last seven points of game as Wisconsin lost for 5th time in last six games- they look like a prime candidate for a quick exit in the NCAA’s.

1— SMU 93, Tulsa 70— Mustangs are really good. At 26-4, not many people talk about them.

                          • Friday's Tip Sheet
                            March 2, 2017

Game of the Night – Cavaliers at Hawks – 7:05 PM EST – ESPN

Cleveland has eliminated Atlanta in each of the past two postseasons, pulling off a pair of sweeps. The Hawks picked up a modicum of revenge in the first meeting this season at Quicken Loans Arena with a 110-106 victory as 7 ½-point road underdogs on November 8. The backcourt of Dennis Schroder and Kent Bazemore lit up Cleveland for 53 points, including seven three-pointers to snap an 11-game losing streak to the Cavaliers dating back to the start of the 2015 playoffs.

The Cavaliers (41-18 SU, 27-30-2 ATS) finished the month of February with a 9-2 SU and 8-3 ATS mark, but stumbled to start March by dropping a 103-99 decision at Boston on Wednesday. LeBron James and Kyrie Irving each scored 28 points for Cleveland, but the Cavaliers were limited to 40% shooting from the floor to suffer their second loss to the Celtics in the last 10 tries. In the process, Cleveland dropped to 0-3 ATS the last three games and 1-6 ATS this season in the road underdog role.

Atlanta (34-26 SU, 29-31 ATS) started the second half of the season with ugly losses at Miami and Orlando, while averaging 88 points per game. The Hawks rebounded by routing the Celtics as road underdogs on Monday, 114-98, while holding off the Mavericks on Wednesday, 100-95. Mike Budenholzer’s team hasn’t won three straight games since pulling off a seven-game hot streak in January, as the Hawks are 0-3 in the last three tries off consecutive victories.

The Hawks have been listed as a home underdog only twice this season, knocking off the Spurs in overtime and suffering a 25-point setback to the Jazz. Atlanta is riding a 5-0-1 mark to the UNDER the last six games, including three straight UNDERS at Philips Arena. Cleveland has won and covered five of the previous seven opportunities as a road favorite, while capturing five consecutive victories at Philips Arena since 2015.

                            We Meet Again

The Wizards used a 26-1 run in the second quarter on Wednesday to pull away from the Raptors, 105-96 to snap a five-game skid to Toronto dating back to the start of the 2015-16 season. Toronto travels to Washington on Friday seeking revenge for that defeat as the Raptors have won in three straight visits to the Verizon Center, including a 113-103 triumph back in November.

Washington held off Golden State on Monday as seven-point underdogs to improve to 20-2 in its last 22 games on its home court. The Raptors have struggled on the road to say the least since late December by compiling a 3-12 record, including an 0-5 mark as an underdog. The three victories in this stretch haven’t exactly come against the elite of the league, beating the Nets twice and the Lakers.

                            Home Cooking

The Mavericks have been one of the best ATS teams since January by compiling a solid 16-6 ATS record, including an incredible 11-1 ATS mark at American Airlines Center. Dallas looks to cover another number when Memphis heads to the Lone Star State for a Southwest division battle.

The Grizzlies start a tough back-to-back set in Texas as Memphis travels to Houston on Saturday. Memphis looks to extend its winning streak to three following victories over Denver and Phoenix, as the Grizzlies limited the Mavericks to 64 points in their first meeting this season in mid-November. David Fizdale’s squad has performed well on the highway by capturing six of their last eight away contests, but have finished UNDER the total in the last two on the road since six straight highway OVERS.

                            Rivalry Renewed

The Celtics and Lakers meet for the second time this season as the two squads hook up at Staples Center. Boston begins a five-game swing against Western Conference foes, which includes games next week against the Clippers and Warriors. Brad Stevens’ club held off the Lakers last month at TD Garden, 113-107 as 11-point favorites, but the Celtics have lost in four of their last five trips to Los Angeles.

The Lakers are riding a five-game losing streak following Tuesday’s 109-104 home setback to the Hornets. Los Angeles has dropped six of its past nine in the role of a home underdog, as its last victory at Staples Center came on January 31 against Denver.

                            Never That Easy

San Antonio takes its five-game winning streak into New Orleans, looking to cover against the Pelicans at Smoothie King Center for only the second time in the last 11 visits. In the previous trip to New Orleans on January 27, the Spurs were blown out by the Pelicans as seven-point road favorites, 119-103. Gregg Popovich’s team is rolling on the highway by winning six of their last seven away from AT&T Center, including three straight covers as a favorite.

The Pelicans snapped their three-game skid in Wednesday’s blowout of the Pistons, but New Orleans has yet to win a game with DeMarcus Cousins in the lineup. Cousins returns following a one-game suspension as the Pelicans have been held to 99 points or fewer in two of three losses since the mid-February trade with Sacramento. Since beating Cleveland in January, the Pelicans own a 1-4 SU/ATS record in the past five as a home underdog with the only victory coming against the Spurs.

                            Gone Silent

The Jazz were squeezed out by the Thunder on Tuesday, but failed to show up the next night in a 27-point home defeat to the Wolves. Utah tries to get back in the win column against a team that hasn’t experienced many victories this season as Brooklyn invades Salt Lake City. The Nets were the last team to reach the 10-win plateau by knocking off Sacramento on Wednesday to end a 16-game skid.

Utah has struggled as a heavy favorite this season by putting together a dreadful 3-8 ATS record when laying at least eight points. The Jazz opened as 14-point favorites, as Utah was tripped up by Brooklyn last season at home as 11 ½-point chalk in a 98-96 setback in February 2016.

                            Head-to-Head Trends

-- The Knicks and 76ers have played a pair of games decided by one point apiece this season with the home squad winning each time. New York travels to Philadelphia seeking consecutive victories for the first time since late December, while the 76ers have covered 12 straight games at the Wells Fargo Center.

-- The road team has captured all three matchups between the Heat and Magic, as Orlando won the last two meetings in Miami. The final contest of the regular season between these division rivals takes place in central Florida as the Magic close out a five-game homestand (1-3 SU/ATS). The Heat have won 17 of their previous 20 games, including a 7-2 mark on the highway.

-- The Clippers hit the road for a back-to-back set in Midwest, traveling to Milwaukee on Friday, followed by a trip to Chicago on Saturday. Los Angeles has covered in six of its past seven road contests, while winning eight of the last nine matchups with Milwaukee. The Bucks have stumbled to a 2-8 ATS mark in their previous 10 games at BMO Harris Bradley Center.

-- Oklahoma City and Phoenix each play with no rest as the two squads meet in the Valley. The Suns lost the first two matchups with the Thunder in OKC earlier this season, while dropping six straight meetings with Oklahoma City. The Thunder has struggled with no rest this season by compiling a 3-8 record after losing at Portland on Thursday.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

                                13) Former players at Georgetown are grumbling about the program’s recent struggles, but they won’t go on record with complaints, because they’re afraid of former coach John Thompson, father of current coach John Thompson III. Grown men are actually afraid of him.

JTIII got the Hoyas to the Final Four ten years ago, but they’ve only made the NCAA’s one of last four years and since ’07, Georgetown is 3-7 in NCAA tournament games, losing to mid-majors like Davidson-Ohio U-VCU-Florida Gulf Coast.

Apparently lot of the program’s biggest donors are former Hoya players, so if you alienate the elder Thompson, you risk losing those donors, who are loyal to him, meaning JTII probably gets to keep his job as long as he wants it. Must be fun to be the athletic director.

                                12) Longtime LA Kings radio announcer Bob Miller is retiring after 44 years with the team; he is beloved by hockey fans in southern California.

                                11) Best wishes to Minnesota Vikings’ coach Mike Zimmer, who is having his 5th/6th procedures on his damaged eye that caused him to miss a game last season.

                                10) Jake Elmore is a baseball journeyman; he’s appeared in 197 games over the last five years, but here’s the thing— he’s been on a different team all five years.

2012— 73 plate appearances in 30 games for Arizona
2013— 136 PA in 52 games for Houston
2014— 12 PA in five games for Cincinnati
2015— 158 PA in 51 games for Tampa Bay
2016— 99 PA in 59 games for Milwaukee

He’s played all nine positions, even pitching an inning for the Astros. This spring, he is in camp with the Blue Jays.

                                9) I’ve never seen numbers on this, but I’m thinking the hardest free throw for any player is the first one they take in a game, especially for visiting players.

First time you shoot with a different background, it can be tough. Someone with a fancy computer should do a study on this, but if I was coaching and we needed to foul late in the game, I’d go after a guy who hadn’t been at the line yet in that game.

                                8) Valparaiso tied for first place in Horizon League, but Alec Peters, their best player, has a stress reaction in his leg and is done for the season, which is a huge blow to their chances to win the conference tournament.

UCLA’s TJ Leaf sprained his ankle Wednesday night; he didn’t return to the game- they haven’t said how bad it is, but Bruins have very little depth, so if he is out for a few weeks, it is bad news.

                                7) Boise State’s Nick Duncan is from Australia; apparently he had never seen snow before coming to Boise, so when it snowed his freshman year and it snows a lot in Idaho, he didn’t know what to do. Wish I had never seen snow.

                                6) This is probably a coincidence, but DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for two games this year because he has 18 technical fouls— his teams won both of those games easily.

                                5) Odd Stat of the Day: Chicago Bulls have won their last 18 home games that were telecast on TNT.

                                4) Canada’s team in the World Baseball Classic has Freddie Freeman, Joey Votto and Justin Morneau, so 1B/DH are spoken for, just not sure what Morneau is going to do.

                                3) Basketball teams are Cincinnati, Houston will be displaced next season while their arenas get facelifts. Think I heard one facelift costs $60M, the other $85M.

Cincinnati will play home games seven miles away next year, in Northern Kentucky’s arena just over the bridge from Cincy.

                                2) In a Nationals-Astros game Thursday, umps called a ball a home run that replay showed never left the park- it hit the top of the fence in two different places but stayed in the ballpark.

It amazes me that there are people who would prefer to have no replay and instead waste time having managers arguing with umpires, which accomplishes nothing. Replay corrects a lot of missed calls and while not a perfect system, is good for the game.

1— People bet on exhibition baseball and I’ve often wondered why, but thought of a solid angle today that could actually work. I’m probably late with this, but…….

Teams play their best lineups when they’re televising back to their home markets; for instance, as I type this, the Mets are on SNY and they’re playing their top guys against a rag-tag group of Astros. Syndergaard pitched a couple innings; they put their best foot forward today, as much as they would in a game on March 3rd. No guarantees, but it gives them an edge.
