      • Inside the Paint - Tuesday
        November 29, 2016

In mid-October, the Houston Rockets (11-6 straight up, 12-5 against the spread) were listed as a 100/1 betting choice to win the 2016-17 NBA Finals and a 60/1 to capture the Western Conference at Sportsbook.ag. As we approach the quarter pole of the regular season, the Rockets have seen their odds shrink to 50/1 and 35/1 respectively.

When you’re playing in the same conference as Golden State and San Antonio, investing a future ticket on Houston doesn’t appear to be a sound bet. However, it’s hard to ignore the early production from the club under new head coach Mike D’Antoni.

The Rockets look just like the Phoenix teams that he coached from 2004 through 2008 and you can argue that this Houston team is more talented. The Rockets' defense has always been questionable but new assistant coach Jeff Bzdelik has slightly improved the numbers even with the loss of big man Dwight Howard.

For our purposes, Houston has been the best bet (12-5 ATS) in the league this year and it’s been better on the road versus the number (7-4 SU, 9-2 ATS). Realizing that Houston has only played six home games makes those numbers even more impressive.

On Tuesday, the Rockets will be playing the middle game of a five-game road trip against Utah (10-8 SU, 9-9 ATS). Houston opened up as a two-point road favorite and the number has been pushed to 2 ½ as of Tuesday morning.

This is your classic offense vs. defense matchup and the Jazz have the best overall defensive unit (93.4 PPG) in the league. Utah also has the slowest pace in the league, attempting 78.7 shots per game and that’s the main reason why tonight’s total (203) doesn’t seem high compared to other Houston games but it is the highest total that Utah has seen this season.

The Jazz enter this game with three straight wins and covers after they defeated Minnesota 112-103 last night as a three-point road favorite. Playing on no rest hasn’t been issue for Utah this season with the club posting a 3-1 record both SU and ATS in back-to-back situations.

These teams met recently in Houston on Nov. 19 and the Rockets ran past the Jazz 111-102 as 6 ½-point home favorites. Houston is 1-1 in its last two trips to Salt Lake City and the two games were decided by a total of five points (117-114, 93-91).

Along with this matchup, we have five other games on tap for Tuesday.

Keep in mind that favorites went 7-0 SU on Monday and Golden State (-13 ½) was the lone ‘chalk’ to win but not cover the number in its 105-100 home win over Atlanta. The ‘under’ went 4-3 last night.

Detroit at Charlotte: The Hornets opened as three-point home favorites over the Pistons and I thought this line would be a little higher. Charlotte is coming off a 104-85 road win over Memphis last night and it hasn’t been a great bet this season (1-2 SU, 0-3 ATS) when playing on no rest. Detroit got diced up at Oklahoma City 106-88 on Saturday, which dropped its road record to 1-8 both SU and ATS. If you’re leaning to the Pistons in this matchup, you better hope they score. In seven of its eight wins this season, Detroit has scored 100 or more points. Make a note that Charlotte has been worse defensively (103.3 PPG) at home than on the road (101. PPG).

L.A. Clippers at Brooklyn: After showing fight the first few weeks of the season (4-5 SU, 7-2 ATS), the Nets are starting to live up to their meek expectations. Brooklyn has dropped seven straight (0-6-1 ATS) and the smallest margin during this skid was seven points. Los Angeles (-12 ½) has had a bit of a holiday hangover, dropping two straight and Sunday’s 91-70 loss at Indiana was the worst performance of the season. The Clippers blasted the Nets 127-95 on Nov. 14 as 14 ½-point home favorites and if Los Angeles come to play Tuesday, a similar effort would be expected. Possible look-ahead spot for the Clippers on tap with a road matchup at Cleveland on Thursday. High total (217) posted for this matchup and both the Nets (11-5) and Clippers (11-7) have been solid ‘over’ leans this season, especially L.A. on the road (7-2).

Cleveland at Milwaukee: Tough game to handicap here because it’s tough to figure out which Cavaliers (-6 ½) team is going to show up on a night-to-night basis. Cleveland only has two losses this season, one was by four points and the LeBron James sat out the other. The Bucks (+6 ½) have gone 5-4 at home but that includes a 1-3 (2-2 ATS) record as underdogs and two losses came in tight fashion to top contenders in the Warriors (124-121) and Raptors (105-99). The ‘over’ (212 ½) might be worth a look on Monday knowing Milwaukee has lit it up in Wisconsin (108 PPG) compared to dismal road numbers (92 PPG). The Cavs went 3-1 SU and 2-2 ATS in the four regular season meetings between the pair last season and the ‘over’ cashed in three of the four.

L.A. Lakers at New Orleans: The Pelicans (-5) will be looking to avoid a three-game losing skid on Tuesday and they’ll also be looking for revenge against the Lakers. Los Angeles ripped New Orleans 126-99 on Nov. 12 as a one-point road favorite behind some ridiculous shooting from 3-point land (16-of-30). Including that win, the Lakers have won three of the last four from the Pelicans. Los Angeles has gone 3-5 on the road but helped bettors with a 5-3 ATS mark. New Orleans has hit its mark offensively (110.7 PPG) at home this season, which has led to a 7-2 ‘over’ record. The Lakers have been a strong ‘over’ team (11-6-1) this season and the aforementioned meeting this season saw the high side cash.

Orlando at San Antonio: I’m not a big fan of laying points with a home favorite playing in their first game back from a long road trip but sometimes you have to ignore that angle based on the matchup. Case in point with Toronto running out Philadelphia last night at home. San Antonio (-14) just completed a perfect three-game road trip (2-1 ATS) and has now won nine games overall coming into Tuesday. The Spurs haven’t played since Saturday and it’s hard to ignore the fact that they’ve beaten Orlando in 11 straight games. However, the Magic have covered four of the last five encounters versus the Spurs. Orlando enters this game with a four-game losing skid and the offense (92.1 PPG) continues to be a major issue for Frank Vogel’s team this season. The total (197) is low due to the Magic’s inept attack but make a note that the Spurs are on a 6-0 ‘over’ run.

        • Three-pointer: On the road again
          November 29, 2016

It’s difficult to win in opposing NBA arenas. Players typically get to their spots on the floor more confidently. Sight lines are more familiar. The crowd being in your corner helps.

Maybe it was solely a scheduling fluke or the added pressure being home for Thanksgiving week carries with it in terms of distractions, but visiting teams won more games than their hosts on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. Home teams went 3-2 on Saturday as Golden State broke the tie in an entertaining game against the Timberwolves.

Will things get back to normal now that the holiday week has passed and routines are restored? Monday’s card featured three road teams in a favorite’s role and visitors pulled out another winning day (4-3), but the rest of the week will see some teams that have struggled away from home attempt to reverse that trend.

San Antonio, 10-0 on the road, isn’t on the list. Fortunately for the rest of the league, the Spurs are home all week.

          Pistons

No team is sporting a greater discrepancy between success at home and struggles on the road than the Detroit Pistons, who enter the week 7-2 at the Palace of Auburn Hills and 1-8 elsewhere. They’ll be moving back downtown to share the new Little Caesar’s Arena with the NHL’s Red Wings next year, but have really made this most of this final season north of Detroit, even beating the Clippers and Thunder there. The Pistons won’t play on their home floor again until Sunday and got their current four-game road trip off on the wrong foot when Oklahoma City got revenge with a 106-88 rout over the weekend.

Detroit now opens the week with a back-to-back at Charlotte and Boston before visiting Atlanta on Friday. Those teams are each over .500 and have combined to win 60 percent of their home games, so Stan Van Gundy will have quite the challenge on his hands. The Pistons will be an underdog each time out, but may get a much-needed boost with point guard Reggie Jackson’s return imminent. Jackson led Detroit in scoring (18.8) and averaged 6.2 assists last season, but hasn’t played this season due to knee and thumb injuries. He’ll likely be able to take the floor for the Hawks game, which will at least give the Pistons a bright spot to take forward with him regardless of how this trip goes.

Thus far, Detroit is sporting the fourth-lowest scoring output in the NBA (97.5), so Jackson’s return would provide a welcome upgrade from Ish Smith, who is shooting 38 percent in losses and is often exposed in mismatches due to his lack of size.

After snapping a four-game losing streak with wins over the Heat and Clippers, the Thunder squashed whatever optimism Detroit had coming into this trip. Look for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope’s response to going 0-for-6 from 3-point range in Oklahoma City to play a large role in the Pistons’ fortunes since he’d averaged 21.3 points and shot 9-for-18 from 3-point range in the previous three games. Each team the shooting guard will run into this week deploys elite perimeter defenders, bolstered by Nicolas Batum being cleared to return from an eye injury.

          Wizards

Washington has finally started getting its act together after stumbling to a 2-8 start. They won three of four for the first time all season before the Spurs ran through town and and posted an OT home win over Sacramento before hitting the road to face Oklahoma City, San Antonio and Brooklyn.

The Wizards will want to enter next Monday’s game against the Nets with a chance at a winning road trip, but will be sizeable underdogs on the first two legs. They’ve got Markieff Morris back from an ankle injury and Ian Mahinmi finally debuted after offseason knee surgery, so it will be interesting to see whether Washington can start meeting expectations. Since missing three games with an ankle injury, Bradley Beal has averaged 29.2 points, including explosions of 34, 42 and 31 points after hitting a career-best seven 3-pointers against the Kings.

If Beal stays healthy, the Wizards won’t have a massive hole in the lineup at shooting guard and can better balance out their bench. It will be interesting to see if they flirt with an upset after opening the season will road losses in their first five outings after finally breaking through in Orlando over the weekend. When it takes the court in OKC, Washington will be looking for consecutive road wins for the first time since last March and only the third time since last All-Star break.

          Lakers

Out west, the Lakers embarked on their second four-game road trip of the season after treating Dwight Howard rudely in his one game against his former team, with fans booing him mercilessly while a short-handed team dispatched of his Hawks 109-94 despite the absence of D’Angelo Russell and Julius Randle. While Russell is dealing with a knee injury expected to keep him out multiple weeks, Randle, who has been the team’s best player thus far, will probably overcome a hip pointer to play at some point this week. The Lakers will play at New Orleans on Tuesday, Chicago on Wednesday and at Toronto and Memphis in a weekend back-to-back, so they’ll be racking up the mileage at a point where multiple players are banged up.

Nick Young overcame a toe injury to lead the way against Atlanta, so success on this trip will likely hinge on him shooting accurately and the likes of Lou Williams, Jordan Clarkson and rookie Brandon Ingram playing well at both ends. Even at full strength, the young Lakers enter the week 3-5 on the road under new head coach Luke Walton as opposed to 6-4 at Staples, so they may be a team to fade.

The Pelicans won’t have Tyreke Evans back but are expected to make a decision on his return Wednesday, so L.A. should dodge a few bullets since the team they’ll see first won’t be at full strength and the one they’ll see last is the NBA’s most injury-plagued. Memphis’ Mike Conley and Vince Carter each left Monday night’s home loss to Charlotte with back injuries, while Chandler Parsons, Zach Randolph and James Ennis are out indefinitely.

The Lakers went 14-68 on the road over the past two seasons, 29th-worst ahead of only the 76ers (10-72).

          • Towns puts more pressure on himself
            November 29, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) After the latest loss in a season that has been full of them for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Karl-Anthony Towns sat at his locker with his face buried in his hands.

For at least the third time this season, the 21-year-old NBA sophomore put the entire blame on himself and his perceived inability to lead a young and promising roster out of the abyss.

''The more losses we keep accumulating, the more it feels like it's my fault,'' Towns said after the massively disappointing Wolves fell to 5-12 with a 112-103 home loss to the Utah Jazz on Monday night. ''I've got to look myself in the mirror and I've got to play better. I've got to play a level where we can't lose and help my teammates out the best I can. I didn't do that tonight. I haven't done it recently.''

That kind of accountability can be admirable on its face. It shows that Towns is invested in turning one of the league's perennial losers into a playoff team for the first time in 13 years. But that pressure can also be crushing, and the team that many observers pegged for a breakout season after adding coach Tom Thibodeau last summer appears to be playing with a weight on its shoulders that has been too heavy to carry as the season nears the quarter pole.

With Towns, Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Ricky Rubio and Kris Dunn, the Timberwolves have one of the most athletic and exciting young rosters in the league. But the enthusiasm and ebullience that so often comes with youth is nowhere to be found on the faces of these Wolves during games. They play with a joylessness that belies their billing as the league's Next Big Thing, as if 12 years of failure that this core has had little to do with is serving as cement around their shoes.

They went into the locker room at halftime on Monday night down just five points. By the looks on their faces and the slumps in their shoulders, one would have thought the deficit was 20.

Towns - the reigning rookie of the year - is right in one respect. He has struggled mightily on the defensive end after showing so much potential there as a rookie. He must play better and give more consistent effort in that area if the Wolves are going to pull themselves out of the doldrums they reside in at the moment.

''All these losses fall on my shoulders,'' Towns said. ''None of the coaching staff. None of my teammates. This is my fault. I don't think it's anyone's fault but myself. It's something I've got to fix. I've got to change for the better for us. I guess it's back to the drawing board tomorrow.''

Clearly, the responsibility lies more than just with Towns. Their point guard play has been subpar, their bench almost nonexistent and Thibodeau has not yet parlayed his mastery of strategy and Xs and Os into a workable formula for this particular group.

He seethed in his postgame remarks after the Jazz loss, calling the second and fourth quarters a ''disaster'' and vowing to get to the bottom of the issues that plague them.

''It's very concerning from the standpoint of you want to be making progress,'' Thibodeau said. ''That's the important thing. Every day make progress, make progress. We didn't make progress today. That's something that has to be corrected.''

Players collectively appear to be at a loss.

''The messages are getting through, but there's a difference between saying something and actually doing it,'' Wiggins said.

Three starters are 21 and the only true veteran playing significant minutes is Rubio, who missed time earlier in the season with a sprained elbow and has not played in three straight fourth quarters. Brandon Rush and Cole Aldrich, the two veterans the Wolves signed in the summer to buttress the young core, are playing scant minutes. That has forced the youngsters to have to grow up even faster from a leadership perspective, which may be an even bigger challenge than rising up against Rudy Gobert at the rim.

''It's something I know I can carry,'' Towns said. ''I never said it was going to be easy. But it's something I know I can deal with.''

It all adds up to a player, and a team, that is too tight. The competitive fire that drives so many of them right now threatens to burn down their own house and has led, Towns said, to many a sleepless night as they search for answers.

''It's been long, long nights,'' Towns said. ''Again, it's going to be one of those nights, I guess. You're just trying to find ways to win.''

MILWAUKEE (AP) Giannis Antetokounmpo tied a career high with 34 points and the Milwaukee Bucks stunned the Cleveland Cavaliers 118-101 on Tuesday night.

Antetokounmpo added 12 rebounds and five assists while Milwaukee ended Cleveland's four-game winning streak. Jabari Parker had 18 points and Michael Beasley had 17 off the bench for the Bucks.

LeBron James had 22 points for the Cavaliers, who fell to 13-3. Kyrie Irving added 20 points.

Milwaukee led by 22 points in the fourth quarter and cruised past the defending champions, who benched their starters midway through the final period.

The Bucks outscored Cleveland by 14 points in the third quarter.

Cleveland rode hot early shooting to a 14-point first quarter lead, but Milwaukee closed on a 10-0 run and trailed by only two at the end of the period.

The hot hands of Antetokounmpo and Beasley sparked Milwaukee in the second quarter as the Bucks built an advantage of eight points before leading 58-54 at the half.

                  NETS 127, CLIPPERS 122, 2OT

NEW YORK (AP) - Sean Kilpatrick scored 31 of his career-high 38 points after the third quarter and Brooklyn stopped a seven-game losing streak with a double-overtime victory over Los Angeles.

The Clippers started the game without Blake Griffin, ended it without the ejected coach Doc Rivers and dropped their third straight game by blowing an 18-point lead.

Chris Paul had 26 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds for the Clippers, but the best guard on the floor in crunch time was Kilpatrick, who also had a career-best 14 rebounds.

Brook Lopez added 27 points for the Nets.

DeAndre Jordan had 21 points and 23 rebounds for the Clippers, who rested Griffin, their leading scorer.

                  MAGIC 95, SPURS 83

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Serge Ibaka had 18 points and Orlando took advantage of a sloppy night by San Antonio to snap the Spurs' nine-game winning streak.

San Antonio committed a season-high 19 turnovers in its worst scoring performance of the season. The Spurs have four home losses in the first two months of this season after falling just once at AT&T Center in 2015-16.

Evan Fournier scored 13 points and Nikola Vucevic had 12 to help the Magic snap a four-game skid.

Orlando entered having lost eight of 11, but they were looser and more fluid than San Antonio from the start.

The Spurs' turnovers resulted in 19 points for the Magic.

Kawhi Leonard had 21 points for San Antonio and LaMarcus Aldridge added 16.

                  PELICANS 105, LAKERS 88

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 41 points and 16 rebounds, helping New Orleans dominate short-handed Los Angeles.

Jrue Holiday scored 22 points in his first start this season and Omer Asik had 10 points and 11 assists while New Orleans snapped a two-game skid.

The Lakers expected to be healthier with forward Julius Randle returning to the lineup following a three-game absence because of a hip injury, but about two minutes into the game, starting shooting guard Nick Young was carried off with a strained right Achilles tendon.

Lou Williams scored 16 points for the Lakers and Randle finished with 12, but Los Angeles was in a 20-point hole by the second quarter.

                  JAZZ 120, ROCKETS 101

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gordon Hayward scored a season-high 31 points, helping Utah beat Houston for its season-best fourth straight win.

Utah started strong en route to a season high for scoring. Rodney Hood had 10 points during a 20-5 first-quarter run after trailing 16-9, and Houston never led again. Hood finished with 19 points.

Rudy Gobert recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 16 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Hayward had seven assists and five rebounds.

James Harden scored 26 points but was an inefficient 8 for 23 from the field. He also had seven assists and five rebounds, while Eric Gordon scored 24 points off the bench.

                  PISTONS 112, HORNETS 89

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 24 points, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Marcus Morris each had 18 points and Detroit beat Charlotte for its third straight win.

Ish Smith added 13 points whhile Detroit shot 49 percent from the field.

Kemba Walker had 23 points for the Hornets, who were playing their fourth game in five nights.

The Pistons hadn't played since Saturday and looked much fresher throughout the game in snapping Charlotte's two-game winning streak.

Detroit took a 10-point lead into the fourth quarter after Caldwell-Pope knocked down a pair of 3-pointers late in the third. Things got sloppy from there with the Hornets turning the ball over frequently on bad passes, and the game quickly turning into a blowout.

                  • Wednesday’s six-pack

                    — Duke 78, Michigan State 69– At some point in league play, we’ll probably hitch ourselves to the Spartans’ wagon. Not yet though.

                    — Tex-Arlington 72, Texas 61— Mavericks should be heard from in March.

                    — Oregon fired football coach Mark Helfrich; chances are they replace him with a big name.

                    — Grizzlies’ PG Mike Conley is out for six weeks with broken vertebrae in his back.

                    — Delaware State 79, St John’s 72— Very bad night for Chris Mullin.

                    — Mets are giving Yoenis Cespedes $110M for four years; I’m not going to mention that the A’s gave him away to Boston in 2014, for Jonny Gomes and two months of Jon Lester. Oy.

Wednesday’s Den: No list, I just research/rant about the Rams

While you were asleep late Sunday night, I was sitting here, doing some research. December 1 is this week (Thursday) and another football season is flying by. As a Rams fan (since 1966, the year of the first Super Bowl), this has been another dismal season.

I like Jeff Fisher well enough as a coach, but he is finishing his 5th season with the Rams and has yet to have a .500 season. Was trying to think of anyone else in the NFL who lasted this long with one team without a winning season. So I decided to research the topic. Here is some of what I learned:

                    — Here is Fisher’s resume with the Rams: 7-8-1/7-9/6-10/7-9/4-7.

Fisher inherited a dumpster fire from his predecessor, Steve Spagnuolo (10-38 in three years) and he has made the Rams competitive again. He gets credit for that.

When Spags was coaching the Rams, I knew when I got out of bed on Sunday morning that we were getting whupped that day. Now I am pretty sure the Rams will have a chance to win, but because the offense sucks, they probably won’t.

                    — I limited my search to the Super Bowl era, starting in 1966. During that time, only five NFL head coaches started their tenure in a city with four consecutive losing seasons. The rest either all got fired before that or had at least one .500 season or at least one winning season. Here are the five coaches:

                    — The thing is, Fisher may already have a contract extension with the Rams, no one knows. He would be the only NFL coach in the last 50 years to start off with five consecutive losing seasons with a team and be offered a sixth year with the same team.

Coach Fisher has been an NFL head coach for 22 years, has been in the playoffs exactly six times. The ultimate irony is that his best year with the Tennessee Titans ended with a Super Bowl loss……to the Rams.

                    — Then there is this: I go back a little further, to 1960 and do the search again. Look for a coach who started his tenure with five consecutive losing seasons, was retained and wound up doing really well. It actually has happened……once and yes, you’ve heard of the guy.

                    Ever hear of Tom Landry?

Here are the Cowboys’ records their first five years as an NFL team:
                    0-11-1/4-9-1/5-8-1/4-10/5-8-1.

Despite five straight losing years, Landry was not fired, he was retained; Dallas went 7-7 in 1965 and in the seven years after that, they went 83-27-2 and split two Super Bowl appearances.

I know what you’re thinking: Dallas was an expansion team, but in a lot of ways, it is easier to build from scratch than it is to clean up a mess and then build a winner.

                    — Am I comparing Landry and Jeff Fisher? Not really, but I am saying that the only time in modern NFL history this scenario has played out, it worked out very well for the team that didn’t fire the coach. Stability has its advantages.

Rams just moved to a new city; they have a young QB who they finally let on the field and the kid looks like he can play a little. They have a really good defense and decent special teams.

I’d check with Norv Turner to see if he was interested in being OC and helping Goff turn into a quality QB, the way he did with Troy Aikman.

                    — I think way too much about this and still I don’t have a concrete opinion on what owner Stan Kroenke should do, but I do firmly believe he should keep GM Les Snead, who drafted Goff, Aaron Donald and Todd Gurley the last three years. Do not fire Les Snead.

This is a billion dollar franchise with a beautiful new stadium being built for the 2019 season; lot of money hangs in the balance. I hope the hell they make the right decision, whatever it is.

No matter what, I’ll still sit there on Sundays and root like hell for the Rams; if that makes me a damn fool, then so be it.
