SAN ANTONIO (AP) Kawhi Leonard had 24 points and 12 rebounds, LaMarcus Aldridge added 18 points and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Miami Heat 94-90 on Monday night.

San Antonio's projected starting five of Leonard, Aldridge, Pau Gasol, Tony Parker and Danny Green made its home debut after injuries to the starting backcourt led to five different starting lineups in the team's first nine games.

Gasol had 12 points, Parker added 11 points and six assists and Green was limited to three points in 15 minutes.

The Heat lost their fifth straight game. Dion Waiters, who hurt San Antonio in the playoffs last season while with Oklahoma City, had 27 points for Miami. Hassan Whiteside added had 23 points and 17 rebounds.

    PELICANS 106, CELTICS 105

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Anthony Davis had 25 points, 16 rebounds, four steals and two blocks, and the Pelicans won for only the second time in their first 11 games.

Langston Galloway scored a season-high 21 points, while Terrence Jones added 15 points and a season-high 10 rebounds for New Orleans, which began the season with eight straight losses.

Isaiah Thomas scored 37 for Boston, including a driving scoop that tied the game with 7 seconds left. But Boston's Kelly Olynyk fouled New Orleans guard Tim Frazier with 2.5 seconds left, and Frazier sank one free throw for the margin of victory.

Avery Bradley had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Boston, and Marcus Smart scored 15 points.

    PACERS 88, MAGIC 69

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - C.J. Miles made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, and the Pacers spoiled Frank Vogel's return to Indiana.

Vogel coached the Pacers for more than five seasons before he was let go in May. He was quickly scooped up by Orlando.

The crowd cheered when Vogel was introduced before the game.

Paul George had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Pacers, who pulled away in the second half. Monta Ellis also scored 13 points, and Jeff Teague finished with 11.

Orlando shot 32 percent from the field. Evan Fournier led the Magic with 14 points on 4-of-15 shooting, and Aaron Gordon had 11.

    ROCKETS 115, 76ERS 88

HOUSTON (AP) - James Harden scored 23 of his 33 points in the first quarter, helping Houston to the easy win.

Harden, who posted a triple-double in his previous two games, added nine assists and seven rebounds.

The Rockets had a three-point lead with five minutes left in the first quarter when Harden took over, scoring all of Houston's points in a 17-9 run to make it 35-24.

The Sixers were led by Joel Embiid and Ersan Ilyasova, who had 13 points apiece.

    KNICKS 93, MAVERICKS 77

NEW YORK (AP) - Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis each scored 24 points, and the Knicks rolled after a halftime lineup change.

The Knicks benched Joakim Noah, their $72 million free-agent signing, starting guard Justin Holiday and moving Porzingis to center in a small lineup. They responded by scoring 31 points in the third quarter after managing just 36 in an ugly first half.

Anthony scored 17 in the third quarter and 20 in the second half after shooting 1 for 6 in the first half. Porzingis finished with 11 rebounds.

Harrison Barnes scored 20 points and J.J. Barea had 17 for the Mavericks, who are still without Dirk Nowitzki and Deron Williams.

    PISTONS 104, THUNDER 88

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - Tobias Harris scored 22 points, Aron Baynes added 20 points and eight rebounds and the short-handed Pistons beat the Thunder.

The Pistons (6-5) improved to 5-0 at home despite being without their two best players. Reggie Jackson hasn't played this season due to knee tendinitis, and Andre Drummond was sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Russell Westbrook had 33 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for Oklahoma City (6-5), which has dropped four in a row. Victor Oladipo finished with nine points, but he was the only other starter to score more than four.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope added 17 points for Detroit.

    GRIZZLIES 102, JAZZ 96

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Marc Gasol scored a season-high 22 points, powering Memphis to the road win.

The Grizzlies used a 9-2 run sparked by Mike Conley's 3-pointer and a 3-point play by Gasol to take a 94-88 lead with 1:25 remaining. Memphis led by as many as 13, but the Jazz kept answering with big plays from Joe Ingles and Trey Lyles.

Conley had 18 points and seven assists for Memphis, and Zach Randolph added 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Ingles scored a career-high 20 points and Lyles finished with 18.

    • Tuesday’s six-pack

      — Rob Gronkowski may have punctured a lung during Sunday night’s game with Seattle.

      — Former UNC/Miami coach Butch Davis will be the next football coach at FIU.

      — Bears WR Alshon Jeffrey gets a 4-game suspension for PED’s.

      — Michigan QB Wilton Speight may be out for the year with a broken collarbone.

      — Fresno State hired former Cal/CFL coach Jeff Tedford as its new coach; he was Aaron Rodgers’ college coach.

      — Rams’ DE Robert Quinn checked himself into a hospital with a non-football illness; apparently the situation looks promising. Obviously, we pray that this situation is resolved quickly so Robert can have a long and healthy life.

Tuesday’s List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

      13) OK, so I go get Chinese take-out for lunch the other day; get the same exact thing every time (chicken fried rice, Dr Pepper) and the same woman takes my order every time. While I wait for the food, she goes outside to her car and gets something out of it.

The woman owns a brand-new, fully loaded white Mercedes SUV, a beautiful car; she works the counter at a take-out place in a strip ****, and she drives a bleepin’ Mercedes. What a country.

      12) There have been three NFL QB’s this year who threw 4+ INTs in the 4th quarter of a game:

      — Carson Palmer against Buffalo
      — Ryan Fitzpatrick against the Chiefs
      — Philip Rivers vs Miami two days ago

From 2012-2015, this didn’t happen. Not once.

      11) Credit to Pete Carroll for going for two points after Seahawks went up 24-17 with about 4:00 left in Sunday night’s game; if they make it (they didn’t), Seattle is up nine points and game is almost in the bag. If they don’t make it, he still has a 7-point lead to protect.

Only other coach I’ve seen do this is the guy who coaches the Minnesota Gophers in college; he didn’t make it either, but his team also protected the lead and won the game.

      10) I looked at my TV around 2:00 Sunday and the screen says: Tennessee 35, Green Bay 10 in the second quarter and I’m like, that makes no sense. Packers’ pass defense was terrible. Not like Marcus Mariota is Dan Fouts or anything.

      9) I quoted this stat at the beginning of the NFL season and I’m doing it again:

The Jets’ last five coaches, in the first year with the Jets: 48-32, all either 9-7 or 10-6.

The Jets’ last five coaches, after the first year: 82-104.

I have no explanation for this.

      8) Yale (+13) 98, Washington 90— Yale’s best player is out for the year, but they won this game anyway. On the road- they took 34 foul shots in a road game.

College basketball in November is wild, crazy- last year Western Illinois won at Wisconsin- the Leathernecks wound up 10-17, Badgers won two games in the NCAAs.

      7) A’s traded 3B Danny Valencia to Seattle over the weekend for a minor leaguer; Valencia hit 17 HRs with a .346 OB% LY but he is 32, arbitration-eligible. so the A’s told him to take a hike, which is bad news for A’s fans (like me) but good news for Ryan Healy’s fantasy owners (like me). Young Healy stood up well in his first major league action last summer.

      6) Teams ranked #2, #3 and #4 in college football all lost Saturday, first time that happened on the same day since 1985.

      5) There no ugly wins. Ever. None. Bupkus.

      4) In their last three games, Carolina Panthers have been outscored 40-12 in the second half.

      3) President of the United States makes $400,000 a year; the minimum salary in the major leagues is $507,500.

      2) I’ve said this before in this space, going back a couple years, so this is in no way a reaction to last week’s elections, but I’m adamant about this: “The person who gets the most votes should win the election.” The Electoral College should be done away with.

All men were created equal, remember that? One person, one vote and all that…….

      1) Speaking of which, Oceanside, CA voters re-elected City Treasurer Gary Ernst to his post last week, but there is one small problem.

Mr Ernst passed away in September; he won the election by 6% anyway.

                      November 16, 2016

CLEVELAND (AP) LeBron James had 28 points and 14 assists, Kyrie Irving scored 24 points and the Cleveland Cavaliers beat the Toronto Raptors 121-117 on Tuesday night to match the best start in franchise history after 10 games.

It was another tense matchup between the teams who met in last season's Eastern Conference finals and could get there again.

Channing Frye's 3-pointer from the top of the key with 59 seconds left put the Cavs up by one. Cleveland then buckled down on defense, holding the Raptors scoreless until letting Kyle Lowry make a layup with 2.8 seconds left.

Kevin Love added 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Cavs, who are 9-1 for the first time since 1976-77.

Lowry scored 28 and DeMar DeRozan added 26 for the Raptors.

                      HAWKS 93, HEAT 90

MIAMI (AP) - Dennis Schroder scored 18 points, Paul Millsap and Tim Hardaway Jr. each scored 15 and Atlanta pushed its winning streak to five games by beating reeling Miami.

Mike Muscala scored 14 and Kent Bazemore added 12 for the Hawks. Dwight Howard had 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, before leaving with 3:06 left in the third quarter with a bruised left thigh.

Hassan Whiteside scored 19 points and grabbed an NBA season-high 25 rebounds for Miami, which has now dropped six straight. The eight Heat losses so far this season have come by an average of 6.9 points - with three of the last four coming by four points or less.

Josh Richardson also scored 19 for Miami, which got 14 points from Tyler Johnson, 13 from James Johnson and 11 from Dion Waiters.

                      HORNETS 115, TIMBERWOLVES 108

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Kemba Walker scored 30 points and Charlotte blitzed Minnesota in the third quarter.

Frank Kaminsky scored 12 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for the Hornets (7-3), who snapped a two-game skid. Nicolas Batum had 16 points and seven assists, and Charlotte outscored Minnesota 36-17 in the third quarter to wipe out a 12-point halftime deficit.

Andrew Wiggins scored 29 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Timberwolves, who fell to 1-2 on their four-game homestand. Minnesota turned the ball over 18 times, which led to 20 points for Charlotte.

                      BULLS 113, TRAIL BLAZERS 88

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Jimmy Butler had 27 points and 12 rebounds, and Chicago opened a six-game road trip with a victory over Portland.

Dwyane Wade had 19 points for Chicago, which extended its modest winning streak to three games. Former Blazers center Robin Lopez added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Blazers, who had won five of six, were cold from the start, falling behind by as many as 26 points. Damian Lillard, who made just two shots from the field in the first half, finished with 19 points.

Chicago, coming off a 106-95 victory over Washington on Saturday, was without Rajon Rondo because of a left ankle sprain. Jerian Grant made his first start of the season and had 18 points.

                      LAKERS 125, NETS 118

LOS ANGELES (AP) - D'Angelo Russell scored 32 points and Julius Randle added 17 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists for his second career triple-double in surprising Los Angeles' victory over Brooklyn.

Timofey Mozgov had 20 points and six rebounds for the Lakers, who maintained a steady lead down the stretch of their fourth win in five games at Staples Center this season.

Russell hit seven 3-pointers and had eight rebounds during the highest-scoring performance by any Lakers player in their impressive start to the season. Los Angeles' balanced play under new coach Luke Walton has put the Lakers (7-5) two games above .500 for just the second time since April 2013.

Brook Lopez had 30 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets.

                      • Wednesday’s six-pack

                        — Kentucky 69, Michigan State 48— Spartans start out 0-2.

                        — Baylor 66, Oregon 49— Ducks’ best player didn’t play.

                        — Indiana State 80, Ball State 74 OT— Good win for Larry Bird’s alma mater

                        — Dayton 77, Alabama 72— Crimson Tide is lot better than they were last year.

                        — South Carolina 70, Monmouth 69 OT— Will games like this serve the Hawks well at MAAC tourney in March?

                        — George Washington 77, Siena 75— Rough day/night for the MAAC, going 1-6, with only win against Dartmouth.

                        Wednesday’s List of 13: Mid-week musings…….

                        13) Jared Goff gets his long-awaited first start for the Rams this week against the Dolphins. LA scored one TD on its last 32 drives, so the bar has been set low for improvement over his predecessor.

                        12) 30 years ago today was November 16, 1986, Jim Everett’s debut with the Rams. He didn’t start, but rallied the Rams back from down 13-0 to lead New England 28-16, but the day didn’t have a happy ending. Patriots scored on a Hail Mary on the last play of the game to win 30-28.

I hope this Sunday has a happier ending.

                        11) Trivia: Steve Dils started that ’86 game at QB for the Rams, one of only nine games he started for LA.

                        10) ESPN’s college basketball marathon was last couple nights; very difficult to keep a normal sleep schedule this week. The best games were oddly enough, the 4:15am/6:30am games, from Hawai’i and Hartford.

Long time ago, maybe 25 years ago, friend of mine and I used to joke that “….if ESPN wanted teams to play at 3am, they would”, then it turned out to be true, for at least one night a year.

                        9) Northeastern 64, UConn 61— Huskies are 0-2 for first time since 1968.

                        8) New Hampshire 57, Temple 52— Owls lost two players to injuries during the summer, are down this year, but losing to New Hampshire is especially ominous.

                        7) Gonzaga 69, San Diego State 48— Been long time since the Aztecs got spanked like this; they’ve got lot of injuries right now, and maybe Gonzaga is really good, but this was a bad game.

                        6) Underdogs were 9-3 vs spread in NFL Sunday, making it a very good day for Las Vegas sportsbooks. Public bets favorites and with eight underdogs winning SU, they had a rough day Sunday.

                        5) Seattle-New England game on NBC Sunday night was highest-rated Week 10 game since 1998.

                        4) Giants’ six wins are by a total of 21 points; they’re 3-1 this year in games decided by 3 or less points, after being 2-10 in such games from 2012-15.

                        3) Minnesota Vikings cut kicker Blair Walsh, who missed eight kicks this year and also a big kick in their playoff loss to the Seahawks last year. He is expected to be replaced by former Redskins’ kicker Kai Forbath.

                        2) Maryland 76, Georgetown 75— Epic gag job by Hoyas, who led by 5 with 0:20 left. Big win for Mark Turgeon; I saw their first game against American and they didn’t look that good. This was an intense game.

                        1) Bengals/Falcons are only NFL teams who’ve started the same five offensive linemen in every game this season.

                              • LeBron slams Phil Jackson for using term
                                November 15, 2016

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) LeBron James respected Phil Jackson's unmatched coaching accomplishments. That affection has vanished.

''I've got nothing for him,'' James said Tuesday.

James fired back at the 11-time coaching champion and current New York Knicks president for using the word ''posse'' in a recent interview to describe the NBA megastar's business associates. James said he lost all respect for Jackson and his comments underline a larger societal issue for young African-Americans trying to succeed in business.

In the interview, Jackson said James has always demanded preferential treatment and called his departure from Miami as a free agent a ''slap in the face'' to the Heat organization. Jackson recalled a time when James asked for the team to stay over in Cleveland while on a road trip, a request that put coach Erik Spoelstra in a bind.

''You can't hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland,'' Jackson said in the ESPN interview .

The word ''posse'' struck a chord with James, who has surrounded himself with childhood friends during his career. Jackson's language also touched a flash point at a time of heightened racial tension in the country. The Knicks executive is 71 and white and long tied to the flower power counter-cultural trappings from more than a generation ago. For him to now brand James' partners with a term better suited for black gangsta culture crossed a racial divide James was unwilling to accept.

''We see the success that we have, but then there is always someone that lets you know how far we still have to go as African-Americans,'' James said Tuesday following the Cavaliers' morning shootaround. ''I don't believe that Phil Jackson would have used that term if he was doing business with someone else and working with another team or if he was working with anybody in sports that was owning a team that wasn't African-American and had a group of guys around them that didn't agree with what they did.

''I don't think he would have called them a posse. But it just shows how far we have to go. But it won't stop us from doing what we need to do as a group. I've put together a great team, I've empowered some guys since I was a kid and we've all grown together and become one of the people that try to model after, so we're not going to let Phil Jackson's comments stop us from doing what we need to do. It just gives us extra motivation. But it's still sad, though, to see that people at the top always want to try to put guys in power down.''

James was offended by Jackson's flippant use of a term many find degrading.

''If you go and read the definition of what the word `posse' is, it's not what I've built over my career,'' James said. ''It's not what I stand for. It's not what my family stands for.''

Along with close friends Maverick Carter, Rich Paul and Randy Mims, James has built a sports business empire. Among the group's most prominent successes are landing James a lifetime contract with Nike worth nearly $1 billion and launching a film and TV production company that has partnered with Warner Bros.

Carter handles James' business affairs while Paul serves as his agent - and for several other top players - and Mims works with the Cavs. They formed LRMR marketing shortly after James turned pro, and the 31-year-old three-time champion was criticized for surrounding himself with friends.

''I've tried to put my guys in position to where they can walk in a meeting and go places and they don't need me because they got to a point where they've done their homework,'' James said. ''They've studied on what they want to do and they can hold a meeting without me because of the respect that they have and the knowledge they have. That's just 12 years of hard work and dedication that we put to each other. I know Phil's in a position of power in our sport, but to criticize me and my guys over that is nonsense.''

The Cavs play the Knicks on Dec. 7 in Madison Square Garden, a game surely to be intensified by the Jackson-James drama. James seemed hurt someone of Jackson's stature would try to demean him.

''It seems like when my name is involved with other people that's helped build the game, it's like, `How can we criticize what he does on and off the floor?' instead of trying to help me,'' he said.

James has been outspoken on social issues and doesn't intend to stop.

''My whole goal is while I have this platform and this muscle that I have right now is how can I better the youth that looks at me every single day and sees what I do and sees what I say and sees the way I walk and talk and what I wear and use it as a positive way to get out of the situation they're in,'' he said. ''I'm not going to be that guy that ever downplays somebody or tries to knock someone off just to feel better about myself.''
